THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- APRIL 25

Patriotism

On this date in 1976, Chicago Cubs outfielder Rick Monday became a national hero of sorts- and received a bicentennial commendation from President Gerald Ford- when Monday rescued an American flag that two protesters were attempting to burn in center field of Dodger Stadium.

The two protesters were a father and his 11-year-old son.

(Los Angeles, California).
