PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS, NFL NEWS, BRUNO

- Even though the Phillies lost in  Atlanta last night, and lost the series 2 games to 1, they ended up with a winning road trip, thanks to their sweep of the Rays in Tampa Bay. They are 10-7, tied with the braves for second place in National League East, 3 games behind the New York Mets. They come home tonight for 10 games, facing the surprising pirates, the always-tough Diamondbacks, and seek revenge against the Braves.

- Bad night in Atlanta. Rally-killer Santana grounded into a double play with first and third and no outs. Hoskins struck out with the bases loaded. Crawford whiffed three times. Franco had two hits but started pulling off the ball again, flailing at several pitches low and away. Williams and Altherr continue to hit near .150. Bad starts or is early platooning hurting players?

- Pitcher Vince Valasquez looks better the last few starts. Not nibbling as much, Valasquez is going after hitters and getting ahead in the counts. Valasquez gave up 3 runs in 6 innings Wednesday night but overall had a solid outing.

- I like the combo of Hernandez and Kingery at the top of the line-up. A nice combination of speed and power.

- The Flyers are cooked. Embarrassed again, they lost 5-0 at home to the defending champion Penguins. Simply put, until the Flyers get another coach and a true No. 1 goalie they aren't going anywhere. They aren't good enough. Outscored 10-1 in Philadelphia and looking flat in the process, that's a bad combination for Coach Hakstol.

The Flyers' stars didn't show up. Gerioux, Vorachek and Simmonds were absent.

I wonder what Ed Snider would think if he were around. The problem is fans aren't sure who is the face of this hockey franchise. Comcast? Holmgren? Hextall? Who would step up and fire Hextall, if need be?

Game 5 is in Pittsburgh Friday night. I would be surprised if the Pens allow the series to return to Philly.

- Game 3 in the NBA playoffs is tonight in Miami, with the Sixers and Heat tied at 1-1. Sounds like Joel Embiid will not play. If he is able and willing, he should go tonight. Without Jojo, I have a bad feeling about tonight. A loss  and Embiid returns for Game 4 to save the Sixers' season.

- The NFL schedule will be released tonight at 8 pm. Parts of the schedule leak during the day. Rumor is that the opening game on Thursday Night Football may not be against Minnesota after all, but Atlanta.  I hope the Cowboy game means something this year. We know the London game vs the Jaguars will be in October. Will the big rematch with the Rams in LA. be a prime-time affair? Will  the bye week arrive after the London game? Will the Birds get their share of 1pm. games?

- Legendary pro wrestler Bruno Sammartino died yesterday at age 81. Bruno was the long-time champion when I was growing up. He was old-school wrestling before all the hype, theatrics and drama. He was the hero before Hulk Hogan, a guy who never lost and would rarely wrestle on TV since he was champ.

Bruno was an icon like Sargent Slaughter, Professor Toro Tanaka, Andre the Giant and Gorilla Monsoon. Rest in Peace, Bruno.
