- Can we just say it now; trading Freddie Galvis to the padres looks like a mistake. OK, it's not good to judge just on the first 10 games of a season. But right now Galvis is hitting .360 with a home run and playing his usual Gold Glove-style shortstop. meanwhile J.P. Crawford is batting .45 and has sat out two out of the last three games.
The Phillies' front office under-valued Galvis' worth, just because he didn't get on-base as frequently as Crawford did in the minors ( analytics). But Galvis had power- he hit 20 homers two years ago- and was peerless on defense. Crawford is much younger but what has he done/ He hit poorly in the minors and went from a Top 5 prospects in baseball to suspect.
GM Klentak is not a good trader ( the Ken Giles deal to Houston looks like a loser). Galvis was a leader both on the field and in the clubhouse.
I suppose if Scott Kingery turns out to be the everyday shortstop ( he needs to play daily) then the trade won't be so bad. Why not make Crawford the utility guy? He can play SS, 3B, even 2B.
If Manny Machado is available in free agency after the season, would the Phillies try to sign him to play SS? Trade Hernandez, move Kingery back to second, and you're set.
- OF Nick Williams is making his case to play everyday. Williams was a key RBI guy last season. He hit a game-winning pinch-home run in the 8th inning Monday night. Kapler has his hands full trying to work out the crowded outfield situation. Hoskins needs to play daily. Herrera has hit well so far. Altherr is spotty but did slam a grand slam last Saturday night. It's a good problem to have, and competition is always good, as long as inexperienced Kapler can handle things without losing the clubhouse.
- Aaron Nola makes his third start of 2018 tonight vs Cincinnati. The Phils have a chance to climb back to .500 They are 4 games in back of the hot Mets in NL East.
- The Reds' Joey Votto may be a good player but he's a jerk otherwise. Once again last night, as he did last spring in Philadelphia, he refused to give a kid a ball. Smug millionaire who thinks it's funny to denied a frigigng baseball to a fan, no matter who they are rooting for.
- The Sixers go for a franchise-record 15 consecutive wins tonight in Atlanta. They finish the regular season on Wednesday at home against Milwaukee.
- I really hope I'm wrong but I'm picking the Penguins to beat the Flyers in their upcoming playoff series. Pittsburgh wins in six games. The Flyers are just too inconsistent. If they are done after only one round, is the coach's job safe?
