- The Phillies won six in a row with a sweep over Tampa Bay over the weekend. It's the first time the Phils swept an American League team since 2003 ( Orioles).
True, the Phillies are beating awful teams ( Marlins, Reds and Rays). but you beat who is on the schedule. What if they had lost most of these games? The team would be trashed.
Scott Kingery did it again. Aaron Altherr is struggling but did crush a three-run homer yesterday. The offense is clicking with big innings and consecutive games scoring at least 10 runs.
On to Atlanta for revenge. Nola goes tonight as the team tries for seven in a row for the first time in seven years. Three games back in NL East, 9-5 and in second place.
Every game we put between us and Washington, the better. The Mets are red-hot at 12-2, but the Nationals are the club to beat in the long run. Getting a cushion on the Nats now will be key for later in the summer.
- The Flyers blew it Sunday afternoon, losing 5-1 in Game Three of their playoff series with defending champion Pittsburgh. The Orange and Black had the momentum after showing heart in a bounce-back 5-1 win in Game Two. Instead, the squad came out strong, dominating the first period but failing to score.
Disappointing, for sure. Now Game Four is a must-win at home. Lose and your'e down 3-1 going back across the state to Pittsburgh. Win and there's hope in a best-of-3 short series, with the penguins having home ice advantage.
Bu the way, Claude Gerioux criticized the so-called "doubters" after the flyers' victory last Friday night. Hey, the team deserved to be criticized after they came out sleep-walking in Game One. They returned to Zombie-like form yesterday. They turtled-up after the Pens woke up and showed some muscle.
Bottom line is, the Pens are simply better. If the two-time champs are alert, not over-confident, and on their game, the flyers, without a true no. 1 goalie and a mediocre coach, can't stay with them..
- The Sixers play Game Two tonight at home, where they are 26-1 since Christmas. The Heat were blown away in Game One. I still think Philly takes the series in five games.
They are a fun team to watch. Will they be even better when Joel Embiid comes back? Even though the 76ers have won 10 straight with Embiid ( 17 in a row overall), it's silly to say they should hold Embiid out, even if he is ready to return .Embiid brings defense, scoring and enthusiasm to the line-up. Why not meld the two styles?
Meanwhile, Cleveland loses their playoff opener Sunday afternoon, getting crushed by Indiana at home. The path to the NBA Finals may be wide open for Philly. One series at a time.
- Eagles news: How stupid was corner back Darrly Worrily by getting arrested near the stadiums early Sunday morning? He was found sleeping in his car in the intersection of Broad and Pattison. He ruined his career by making bad decisions yesterday. He made it even worse by resisting arrest and getting tasered by Philadelphia police.
The Eagles obviously thought he wasn't worth the trouble, cutting him Sunday afternoon. They can add depth to their secondary in other ways.
Meanwhile, Nick Foles told Houston media he still wants to be a starter. He loves Philadelphia, loves the Eagles but... Let's face it- he won't start with the Eagles unless Carson Wentz is injured. With a little over a week until the draft, does GM Howie Rossman make a deal for much-needed draft picks and move Foles? Is Rossman convinced that Wentz will be back for the season opener? Do the Eagles have faith in back-up quarterback Nate Sudfeld in case they do trade Foles and Wentz isn't ready to return?
The next week or so should be very interesting. Meanwhile, the NFL schedule is set to be released sometime this week. Always a favorite time of the year.
- As we start another week of baseball..some observations:
The Mets are 12-2. More surprising is that the Nationals are already 6 games back of New York. How bad are both Florida teams- Marlins and Rays? The Angels look like they are going to give the Astros a run for their money in AL West. Wouldn't it be fun to see mike Trout in the playoffs again? The Dodgers are in last in the West. Never count as St. Louis as they hover just below surprising Pittsburgh in NL Central. The Red Sox are reminding the Yanks they still rule AL East. Will Texas deal Cole Hamels to Phillies if they still suck in July and the Phils are buyers?
