THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- APRIL 14/15

1968 Masters

"What a stupid I am!"

- Roberto DeVicenzo

On April 14, 1968, Masters officials declared Bob Goalby champion  after Roberto DeVicenzo signed his incorrect scorecard. Under the golf rules of the time, the higher score that DeVicenzo signed for stood, meaning that he was credited with a 66 rather than the 65 he actually shot in the final round. And meaning that he was one stroke off the lead rather than tied and heading into a playoff with Goalby.

When Devicenzo realized his mistake, he exclaimed 'What a stupid I am." ( Augusta, Georgia)
