Fun night on American Idol. I liked the new format, of voting and the results all in the same show. No boring, wasted shows, waiting for results. Came right down to the end and it was exciting as the rushed results were announced. Here are my thoughts..
- Not a coincidence that the last four contestants Sunday night were the same four the judges saved last week. Glad the drag queen Adam/Ada got the boot. Her gimmick wore thin. She had a great voice, but America obviously couldn't take her diva-like drama. Journee barely made it, which isn't good news for her next week, especially if the same people vote. I was surprised that Michelle left, not that she was outstanding, but I thought Latin voters would keep her in. Dennis got the shaft by going last. His fans didn't really have a lot of time to vote. In the end, he was good but not great, and his version of "Can you Feel The Love Tonight?" was not as good as the original Elton John version.
- It was Disney night. Katy Perry dressed like Snow White and was back to her cute, funny self. Lionel and Luke were again too nice, not wanting to sway America's vote one way or the other. Since Idol is now on ABC- owned by Disney- it made sense that Disney wanted to promote and applaud itself.
- I think America got it right last night, and I was glad the ending was rushed so we didn't have to hear the judges preach that the public got it all wrong. From now on it's a really strong competition. It's an interesting collection of personalities, singers and styles.
- Caleb and Gabby are the country singers. They can win but won't. Cade has his loyal fans and can win. But he won't either. Cade will have a successful career, a lot like Daughtry, who didn't win either.
Maddie definitely can win. She is a coffeehouse-type little singer. Will the hugeness of the finals ( if she makes it that far) swallow her up? Catie, the geeky, awkward one, has a nice voice and quirky musical choices. But will her nerdy personality wear thin as well?
I like Michael J. and predict now that he will win. But his voice can be all over and as long as he doesn't stray way off the charts, should be OK.
Unless he is really good next week Jurnee should be eliminated soon. Caleb will always be strong with his voice, but is he too much like Scottie McCready?
By the way, the internet was still bitching about the lack of diversity in the final choices. But 4 out of 7 are females. Two are of color. One is a lesbian. Plus what does it matter? Either you can sing or can't sing. That should be the bottom line. but I'm sure the ghost of Ada will linger for a while.
Next week is Prince week, which bodes well for Cade.
