Last night on Wheel of Fortune there was a female contestant in a wheelchair. This was news to me for several reasons: It was one of the first times I've seen someone with a disability on a game show ( there was a blind contestant on Jeopardy a few seasons ago). It also gives me encouragement that attitudes towards people with disabilities is changing, and it's do-able for others to try out in the future.
The woman had her husband with her as her "designated spinner". He spun the wheel but wasn't allowed to help solve puzzles or call out letters.
She was good and ended up winning the night, going to the Bonus Round.Host Pat Sajak seemed a little awkward with the situation and wondered aloud how they would do the Bonus Round. The contestant was able to spin the smaller wheel, and her husband picked up the envelope before he wheeled her to the spot to attempt to solve the final puzzle. She didn't, missing out on a car.
Otherwise, there were no special provisions or favors. She won fair and square.
It was refreshing to see someone with a disability ( she teaches second grade) on such a high-profile show. I may take the test and see if I qualify, as I worried "how would I spin the wheel?" It opens the door for me and others in my situation to have the same fun and enjoyment as able-bodied people.
Plus I may get to meet Vanna White!
