Sizing up the embarrassing weekend in Atlanta, topped off by a disastrous 15-2 Phillies loss to the Braves on Saturday night..
-How stupid is Phillies' GM matt Klentak for hiring someone as unqualified as Gabe Kapler ? Unless Klentak himself is unqualified too?
- Owner John Middletopn can't be happy after investing so much in this season. It won't happen but Kapler should be fired immediately, replaced by Dusty Warthen. It's not a knee-jerk reaction- the guy obviously has no clue and doesn't know what he is doing.
He has burned-out the bullpen already. In Game 3 of the season he is forced to use a position player to pitch. He brings in Hoby Milner- without asking Milner to warm up. Kudos to umpire Jerry Layne for allowing Milner a few warm-up tosses so he wouldn't get injured.
- Maybe Major League Baseball will force the issue, as Layne is reporting the incident to MLB. It's a totally embarrassing event by Kapler. The team looks listless, disorganized and confused- a reflection of their manager and leader.
- Young players can be damaged by long-term exposure to this ineptitude. That's why Klentek needs to bite the bullet, admit he made a major mistake, one may cost him his job as well, and try to save this season before it gets worse.
- Are the Phillies currently the laughing stock of baseball?
- Is it time to finally admit that Vince Valasquez needs to be in the back of the bullpen? I've seen enough of him as a starter, great arm or not. He just doesn't have it as a starter. He's too wild. throws too many hittable pitches and doesn't know how to pitch. Can a guy like Jake Arrieta help him?
- Cesar Hernandez strikes out two more times as lead-off hitter. Unacceptable. Scott Kingery gets two more hits. Shouldn't he be playing at a stable position and hitting at the top of the line-up? Hernandez needs to be the next regular to sit down.
- The team looked poor fundamentally coming out of Florida. What were Kapler and his coaches doing in Clearwater? The team appears undisciplined and clueless. Pete Mackanin, where are you? Better yet, Dusty Warthen is in the dugout already. Promote him to manger now!
- Sad because this summer had so much promise. I was excited for the first time in years, especially after Arrieta signed and Kingery made the club. Now I'm more scared than excited. Is it going to be this way all year/ The games are boring, long and unwatchable. Isn't this supposed to be entertaining and fun? Win or lose? Watching the young players should give hope. Watching this manager over manage and ruin the team- a la Chip Kelly- will give me heartburn.
- How is it for a Sunday, and Easter, that there is no Phillies game? maybe it's better this way- we can all enjoy a blessed and peaceful holiday instead of bitching about Kapler all afternoon.
- Go Villanova! Luckily for Kapler and the Phils, nova should win another national championship tomorrow night and will grab the headlines for a few days. Kapler claims he "needs to do better" in New York. He predicts the Phillies will "make the playoffs". They will- after he gets fired. Needing to do better is stating the obvious. If the disgraceful display of incompetence continues in New York, will the fans boo Kapler at the home opener? It's one thing to lose ( even though this team is expected to win). It's another thing to look respectable and not put this young team in harm- both mentally and physically. How much faith do these players now have in Kapler? Once they begin to tune him out change must occur- sooner than later.
