PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, EAGLES, FLYERS

- Sixers destroyed the heat last night to take a 1-0 lead in their opening round playoff series.  Their 17-game winning streak is the longest in Philadelphia sports history. No team- Eagles, Phillies, Flyers or even past Sixers- have won as many consecutive games..ever.

They are fun to watch. Scoring 130 points and blowing-out teams on a regular basis  is exciting basketball. but the 76ers really took control of the game when they stepped up their defense in the second half.

Ben Simmons is a superstar and should be Rookie of the Year in the NBA. All this without Embiid, who hopefully will join the fun soon. He rang the bell last night before the game, wearing a mask designed to look like the one the Phantom wore in The Phantom of the Opera.

So much for being nervous or having the playoff jitters. so much for the young Sixers not being able to handle the more intense, uptempo pace of postseason.

The Sixers try for a 2-0 lead against Miami on Monday night in South Philly.

- The Phillies won their fifth game in a row, dismantling the Tampa Bay Rays, 9-4. The Phils scored six runs in the 2nd inning. Scott Kingery had two doubles.  Kingery returns to his natural position- second base- this afternoon in the getaway game at Tampa.

The Rays, after letting key vets like Evan Longoria go, look to finish last in American League East. How sad is the state of baseball in Florida. Both Sunshine State squads may lose 100 games each this summer.

- Interesting decisions upcoming in the bullpen, as injured veterans like Neshek, Hunter and Leiter Jr. are coming back soon. I like the two lefties, Morgan and Milner, but I still don't trust Ramos and Neris.

- The hot- Phils are now 8-5 and in 2nd place in NL East. The Mets finally lost Saturday night, so the Phillies are 3 back. They move onto Atlanta tomorrow, with an early rematch with the Braves, a far different team then the one that opened the season in Atlanta.

It's been a nice and much-needed run for the Phils, beating up on awful teams like the Marlins, Reds and Now the Rays. The upcoming home stand features two first place teams- the Pirates and Diamondbacks.  Also circle the weekend of may 11th on the calendar as the Mets invade citizens Bank Park.

- Newly- acquired Eagle Darryl Worley  was arrested early this morning by Philadelphia police. He apparently resisted arrest at 6 am. and had to be tasered. Details forthcoming. As with the Michael Bennett case in Houston ( which has quieted down) , let's find out the facts first before rushing to judgement, one way or another.

- The Flyers are home this afternoon  in their playoff match-up with the champion Penguins. Winning Game 3 and taking a 2-1 lead would be big. Winning both home-ice games, taking a commanding 3-1 lead, would force Pittsburghs' back against the wall. Lose and suddenly the pens are back in control and on top.

- So, why not the Sixers? Why not the Flyers? Did anyone really give the Eagles a shot to win the Super Bowl?
