Dark Day
"I remember sitting there, toweling off, and then I leaned forward to take a sip of water, our time was almost up and my mouth was dry. The cup had barely touched my lips when I felt a horrible pain in my back, my head whipped around towards where it hurt and I saw a man wearing a baseball cap, a sneer across his face. His arms were raised above his head and his hands were clutching a long knife. He started to lunge at me again. I didn't understand what was happening.'
- Monica Seles
On April 30, 1993, then world #1 Monica Seles played Magdlena Maleeva in the Citizen Cup in Germany. Seles was up 4-3 in the second set after having won the first, and appeared to be within reach of taking the match and moving on to tournament.
It was during the changeover that 39-year-old Gunter Parche leaned over and stabbed at Seles with a nine-inch blade. Oarche later admitted an obsession with Steffi Graf, Seles' rival, and sought to end the rivalry herself.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES
Disappointing end to Phillies' 10-game home stand. After sweeping the Pirates four games, the Phils faced two solid cubs- Arizona and Atlanta, and lost 2 of 3 to both. They are now 16-11, tied for second place with thee Braves, 1 1/2 games behind first place New York.
- I'm sick of pitcher Vince Valasquez. He is frustrating as hell. He has a big arm but still doesn't know how to pitch. The trade that brought him to Philadelphia, for reliever Ken Giles, looks like a bust for the Phils. Valasquez needs to go to the bullpen or Lehigh Valley.
- Zach Eflin pitches Tuesday in Miami. Hopefully Eflin sticks this time. Because of injuries, Valasquez will stay in the rotation. He needs to step up along with other young arms.
- Atlanta will be a force to be reckoned with this season and down the road. I like their offense. Their line-up has been put together nicely, with table-setters at the top ( Inciarte, Albie) and power in the middle ( Freeman). Plus why is it that the Braves can bring up their young kids at an early age ( Budding star Ronald Acuna Jr is only 20-years-old) yet the Phillies don't bring their young prospects up much later? Anyway, Atlanta has one of the best farm systems in the majors. If they get any sort of pitching they will be in contention this summer and beyond.
- There is always one team every year that is a thorn in the side. For years the Phillies couldn't beat the Mets. Now they are only 3-6 against the Braves, already playing half of their games vs Atlanta.
- With J.P. Crawford out several weeks with an arm strain, Scott Kingery will play most of the time at shortstop. Let's see if his bat comes alive since he now has a steady, daily position. Crawford's injury may be a blessing in disguise. If Kingery does well at short, maybe Crawford could become the utility guy.
- Carlos Santana needs to get-going. He is bringing down the offense. he walks but that's about it. A major disappointment so far. Why continue to hit him 2nd in the batting order? Hit him 6th or lower until he gets hot. The Braves have both speed and power at the top of their line-up. A good 1-2 punch for the Phillies to lead-off would be Hernandez and Kingery, a nice combo of speed and power
.Regardless, Santana needs to hit lower and spend some time on the bench, allowing Hoskins to play first base. I agree that Santana will eventually hit, and he can't get out of his slump by sitting in the dugout. The organization is going to want him playing to prove the free-agent signing wasn't a major mistake.
- Odubel Herrera has gotten off to a hot start this year, reaching base in 29 straight games and making outstanding catches in center field. He is on pace to make the All-Star game for the second time. Even so, he doesn't always hustle on the bases, as he jogged to first base yesterday on a ground ball. Let's see if Kapler shows some guts and benches Herrera for a game to send a message. Herrera will never change. You either have to accept his faults of bring lazy or trade him.He is both fun and irritating to watch everyday.
- The Phillies have the second most errors in baseball. They miss the steady, sure-handed glove and leadership of Freddie Galvis. Crawford alone has five so early in the season. The club has always prided itself on fielding and fundamentals, but both were lacking, even in spring training.
- The Sixers are in Boston tonight for Game 1 of their playoff series. I love all the memories and film clips of the past Philly-Boston hated rivalry, especially the titanic battles between Dr. J. and Larry Bird in the 80s.I like the Sixers in six. They need to split in Beantown before returning home on Saturday night for a wild Game 3 against the dreaded Celtics.
- Looking back over the weekend, how great was the draft? Dallas flopped hosting the event, the birds jumped ahead of the Cowboys to snatch a tight end, and David Akers became an instant Eagle icon by trashing Cowboy fans in their own town.

IDOL CHATTER- SUNDAY NIGHT
Fun night on American Idol. I liked the new format, of voting and the results all in the same show. No boring, wasted shows, waiting for results. Came right down to the end and it was exciting as the rushed results were announced. Here are my thoughts..
- Not a coincidence that the last four contestants Sunday night were the same four the judges saved last week. Glad the drag queen Adam/Ada got the boot. Her gimmick wore thin. She had a great voice, but America obviously couldn't take her diva-like drama. Journee barely made it, which isn't good news for her next week, especially if the same people vote. I was surprised that Michelle left, not that she was outstanding, but I thought Latin voters would keep her in. Dennis got the shaft by going last. His fans didn't really have a lot of time to vote. In the end, he was good but not great, and his version of "Can you Feel The Love Tonight?" was not as good as the original Elton John version.
- It was Disney night. Katy Perry dressed like Snow White and was back to her cute, funny self. Lionel and Luke were again too nice, not wanting to sway America's vote one way or the other. Since Idol is now on ABC- owned by Disney- it made sense that Disney wanted to promote and applaud itself.
- I think America got it right last night, and I was glad the ending was rushed so we didn't have to hear the judges preach that the public got it all wrong. From now on it's a really strong competition. It's an interesting collection of personalities, singers and styles.
- Caleb and Gabby are the country singers. They can win but won't. Cade has his loyal fans and can win. But he won't either. Cade will have a successful career, a lot like Daughtry, who didn't win either.
Maddie definitely can win. She is a coffeehouse-type little singer. Will the hugeness of the finals ( if she makes it that far) swallow her up? Catie, the geeky, awkward one, has a nice voice and quirky musical choices. But will her nerdy personality wear thin as well?
I like Michael J. and predict now that he will win. But his voice can be all over and as long as he doesn't stray way off the charts, should be OK.
Unless he is really good next week Jurnee should be eliminated soon. Caleb will always be strong with his voice, but is he too much like Scottie McCready?
By the way, the internet was still bitching about the lack of diversity in the final choices. But 4 out of 7 are females. Two are of color. One is a lesbian. Plus what does it matter? Either you can sing or can't sing. That should be the bottom line. but I'm sure the ghost of Ada will linger for a while.
Next week is Prince week, which bodes well for Cade.

IN THE NEWS- SENATORS CALL FOR END TO SUBMINIMUM WAGE AMID ACCUSATIONS OF EXPLOITATION
From Disability Scoop..
Sub minimum wages for workers with disabilities came under fire this week as a group of U.S. senators called for an end to the "discriminatory" practice and an Illinois manufacturing company was accused of exploiting nearly 260 employees.
Lawmakers sent a five-page letter to the U.S. Department of Labor on April 23, the same day that the department announced that Rock River Valley Self Help Enterprises had violated federal employ, emy law and owed two years' worth of back pay to workers who earned less than minimum wage.
Seven Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, wrote that the lower pay "permits employers to discriminate against workers on the basis of disability status and unjustifiably sets low expectations for workers with disabilities."
The lawmakers called for a phasing out of so-called "Section 14(c)" jobs where employers, under the Fair Labor Standards Act. apply for certificates that allow them yo pay people with disabilities less than minimum wage. Sub minimum wages are based on the productivity of a person with a disability composed to someone without a disability. For instance, the letter noted that Goodwill Enterprises had paid some workers as little as 22 cents an hour.
The senators requested information on how many workers with disabilities across the country are employed under 14 (c) certificates and how much they earn. As of last week, the Department of Labor had not responded to the letter, Duckworth's office said.
In the Self Help investigation, federal officials revoked the nonprofit's certificate and said the group had failed to conduct proper time studies of jobs in order to calculate wages and had sometimes unlawfully paid workers with gift cards.
"The Department of Labor is committed to protecting Americans with disabilities from exploitation in the workplace," Ruben Rosalez, acting regional administrator for the agency, said. 'When employers violate federal law and obstruct investigators, we take decisive action to protect vulnerable workers. their families and other employers who play by the rules."
The department said Self Help must pay all current workers at least the full federal minimum wage of $ 7.25 per hour going forward and pay back wages.
Self Help Executive Director Carla Haugrich issued a statement saying the organization had served the "developmentally disabled workforce" for 54 years.
'We are obviously disappointed in the decision made by the United States Department of Labor, disagreeing with this outcome, but will take all necessary steps to comply with the decision as we pursue our available options to have the matter duly reviewed," the statement said.
According to the National Council; on Disability, an independent federal agency, sub minimum wage programs are primarily operated by nonprofit or state-run social service providers rather than private businesses. The programs are also ineffective at transitioning employees into the general workforce, the agency said.
But other advocates and families say that jobs that pay less than minimum wage play an important role, especially for those with the most severe disabilities, by fostering self-esteem and productivity.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, SIXERS
- The Phillies looked flat as they lost to the Braves Saturday night. They remain only 1/2 game behind the Mets for first place in NL East, since New York lost big in San Diego. Atlanta, which has beaten the Phils 5 of 8 times this early season, creeps to only a game in back of Philadelphia.
- Odubel Herrera made an incredible catch to rob Freddie Freeman of a center field home run. leaping up and snatching the ball from over the fence. Give Herrera credit- other then his usual mental lapses on the bases, he has played well so far, All-Star caliber play.
- Looks like J.P. Crawford will be heading to the disabled list soon with a strained right elbow. Does that mean Scott Kingery will finally play everyday at SS? The team is second in the majors in errors. They clearly miss steady Freddie Galvis.
- The Eagles completed their 2018 draft by selecting a corner back, a defensive end, an offensive tackle and n Australian rugby player who has never played American football in his life. All iu all, a goodd raft, with tight end Dallas Goedert the second round show-piece. The re-signing of RB Darren Sproles solves the need for another running back, plus Sproles will also solve the punt returner problem. Sproles gives the Eagles a home run-hitter in special teams.
- Undrafted free agents will fill out the roster as rookie work-out camps begin this week.
- The fans got who they wanted. The Sixers will travel to Boston Monday night to face the hated Celtics in the playoffs.Game 3 will be in Philly next Saturday night . I like the Sixers in 6, despite Boston having home court advantage. The Celts have too many injuries and the 76ers are playing too well.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES
- I like the Eagles draft so far. Burning Dallas by moving ahead of them in Round 2 and taking tight end Dallas Goedert was another brilliant move by Howie Rossman. Goedert fills another need since Trey Burton left. Another Dakota football stud.
- The Cleveland Browns are absolutely the most pathetic, clueless organization in all of sports. They whiffed on both of their high first round picks. Meanwhile, the rest of the NFC East got no significantly better to dethrone the Birds. The Giants will be improved by taking running back Barkley, but who will block for him> Plus, unless they get a QB today, they have Eli Manning for a few more years. The Cowboys are lacking weapons, especially with TE Jason Whitten suddenly announcing his retirement to join the Monday Night Football broadcasting booth. The Redskins still aren't good enough with Alex Smith at QB.
- Delusional Dallas still thinks it's America's Team. Poor job hosting the draft. How can the Cowboys be America's Team when they haven't been in a Super Bowl since the 90s? Talk about living in the past..
- David Akers is now an Eagle legend. To rub it into the Cowboy fans - in Dallas- after winning a Super Bowl, was the best.
- Hopefully the Birds pick up a running back and a wide receiver/punt returner today in the draft. Depth at linebacker, offensive line and the secondary would be cool.
- The Phillies beat Atlanta last night, with Herrera blasting a pair of home runs and Alfaro hitting a solo shot. After a shaky 1st inning, Nola settled down and got the win after seven innings. The Mets won in San Diego last night, so the Phils remain 1/2 game behind New York for first place in NL East. Nick Pivetta pitches tonight.
- The Braves and Phillies should battle for supremacy in the division for years. Both have good young players at the major league level, and both have productive farm systems. In Albies and Axuna Atlanta has a solid base to build on.

Thanks, Jimmy V.
"To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is to laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy.
But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, your'e going to have something special."

REVIEW- ALBUM-GRAFFITI U BY KEITH URBAN
** stars out of four
New music by country superstar Keith Urban is out today, his 9th album called "Graffiti U".I really like Urban, his songwriting, his energy in concert, his under-rated guitar work, his voice, which can carry a sentimental ballad or an upbeat rock song. But on Graffiti U he expands way far from just country- and not always in a good way.
I give him credit for not resting on his laurels and exploring musically. Ripcord was a well-balanced album, country, rock and starting to ease into techno and rap. A little of the new stuff was cool, as long as Urban gives us the music which made him a star. Unfortunately on the new record there hardly is any country to speak of.
The best song, in my opinion, is the relentless ballad "Parallel Line". The new single, "Coming home" leads off the album. From there it's a collection of mostly upbeat tunes that too often crosses-over into 80's-like dance music.
"Female" is his sometimes controversial take on current conditions in society. "Texas Time' is a good, old-fashioned rock n' roll song, and I wished more of the album sounded as simple, which all the glitz.I'm sure there will be a bunch of singles off the record, including the summertime anthem "Drop Top."
Kudos to Keith Urban for putting out new music in the middle of his rise to fame. Fresh off Ripcord, he is touring the world this summer with Graffiti U ( I'm seeing him in August in Camden). Hopefully on his next effort he scales it back a notch and returns to his roots For now, Graffiti U is a good album with plenty of reasons to move. But Urban's wheelhouse is country/pop songs, and as uncomfortable at times he sounds doing the new stuff on the record, that's how uneasy I felt. But when he goes back to what got him to where he is, his music feels familiar and welcome.

IN THE NEWS- DELTA PPASSENGER WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS WAS TIED TO A WHEELCHAIR WITH A BLANKET FOR TRANSPORT, FAMILY CLAIMS
This disturbing article is from Business Insider..
Delta Air Lines passenger Maria Saliagas was reportedly tied to a wheelchair with a blanket after the airline failed to provide the correct wheelchair.
Saliagas was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis five years ago, but didn't want to end her tradition of traveling to Europe with her husband. She told the media that Delta usually accommodates her by providing a wheelchair with extra straps to keep her upright, but her son, Nathan, said Delta did not fulfill his request for the special wheelchair during her April 1 flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam.
Instead, Nathan said airline employees tied Maria to a wheelchair with a blanket that caused her discomfort upon her arrival the airport in Amsterdam.
Delta reportedly offered the Saliagas family 20,000 SkyMiles after the incident, but the family said it wants Delta to reconsider how it treats passengers with disabilities.
A Delta representative told Business Insider that the airline's perspective on the incident was different than the one shared by the Saliagas family.
"We are disappointed that our customers didn't have a satisfying travel experience and will ensure that their return flight exceeds expectations," representative said. Delta always looks for ways to improve the overall flight experience, but in this case the events "do not align with details shared by the customer's family."

Rocky
On this date in 1956, Rocky Marciano retired as the only undefeated heavyweight champion of the world at 49-0. Marciano was the Heavyweight Champion from September 23, 1952, to April 27, 1956. Marciano is the only person to hold the heavyweight title and go untied and undefeated throughout his career.
He would defend his title six times, against Jersey Joe Walcott, Roland La Starza, Ezzard Charles (twice), Don Cockrell, and Archie Moore.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLTERS, SIXERS
- The Phillies lost the series to Arizona yesterday afternoon, losing 8-2. They remain only 1/2 game behind the Mets for first place in NL East. By losing 2 of 3 to the league-leading Diamondbacks, the Phils aren't quite ready for prime-time yet.
- Pitcher Ben Lively needs to do better as the No. 5 starter. Jared Eichoff will be off the disabled list soon. So will Mark Leiter Jr., another potential starter. Zach Eflin is only a phone call away from Lehigh Valley.
The Phils start a weekend series with the Braves tonight. Atlanta is lurking only a game behind the Phillies. Meanwhile the Mets travel to San Diego this weekend before flying cross-country again and returning home.
- The Flyers are so out of touch, from Claude Giroux blaming the fans for booing the team to GM Ron Hexstall arrogantly stating that he is pleased with his coaches and only a "handful of fans" feel there should be a coaching change, only a :handful" who were displeased with the effort against Pittsburgh in the playoffs.
- The Sixers continue to rest until Monday night, when they start their second round playoff series. Boston and Milwaukee face-off in Game 7 of their series on Saturday night. If Milwaukee wins on Saturday they travel to Philly on Monday night. If the Celtics win the 76ers go to Boston Garden. The Bucks may be the more manageable team of the two for the Sixers, while the Celts are tradition. and despite injuries, are the more dangerous team .
- Another stupid move by Major League Baseball, putting yet another Phillies game on Facebook. Why not have Thursday afternoons' Diamondback game on TV as well? Clearly, this Facebook crap is a gimmick intended for millinials who don't care about baseball anyway and think it's boring and slow.
Way to piss of your most loyal fans, baseball. Philadelphia's Thursday afternoon game on Mat 10 vs San Francisco will also be exclusively on Facebook.

CHIRPING BIRDS-EAGLES & NFL DRAFT
- I liked what the Eagles did last night, trading away the No. 32 pick ( as expected), dropping down to No. 52, including a second round selection in 2019. Once running back Sony Michel was grabbed by the Patriots at 31 ( rumors were that Philly was interested in Michel), the die was cast.
- The Eagles traded No. 32 to Baltimore, and the Ravens took quarterback Lamar Jackson. Looks like he will be the heir apparent to QB Joe Flacco. Obviously, the Birds have a bond with the Ravens, as Joe Douglas used t work for Baltimore and GM Howie Rossman has good connections with the Ravens' GM, Ozzie Newsome.
Thinking out of the box, what if the Eagles had kept 32 and drafted Jackson? Trade Foles for a bunch of picks, groom Jackson as the back-up, trade him when the time is right for even more picks. That scenario wouldn't work unless you were sure that Carson Wentz would be back for the season opener.
- At 52, will the Eagles target the Penn State tight end? What about the running backs from Georgia and LSU? Is there a linebacker at that spot who would spark interest? What about depth on the lines?
- Waiting five hours, and not getting a pick was a bummer, but in the long run, the fans should be happy. Looking around the NFC East, the Giants improved by taking RB Sequin Barkley. They still need someone to block for Barkley. Looks like they will go with Eli Manning at QB for a few more years. The running back tandems of Barkley and Zeke Elliot in the East, especially in December, shouldn't make the birds happy.
Dallas took a nameless linebacker with health issues. The Redskins got a good player at defensive tackle.Nothing that will change the balance of power in the division.
- Cleveland screws up again. Taking QB Baker Mayfield was a shaky move. He is under-sized and has immaturity issues. They took a defensive back at No. 4 who is an OK player but leave defensive tackle Chubb on the board for Denver to steal. The Browns are an 0-16 team by merit. When they trade out of the top spot they mess it up. When they stay they mess up. They are easily the worst sports franchise in all of sports.
- Four quarterbacks were taken in the top ten for the first time ever. Yet most experts feel there is no one special at QB this year.
- Look for a run on wide receivers in the second round. A ton left, although Ridley and Moore went to Atlanta and Carolina late in the first round.
- Would love for the Eagles to get a return guy somewhere in this draft as well. A punt returner, in case Darren Sproles doesn't return, and possible a guy who returns kick-offs as well.
- Having the draft in Dallas was a bust. No comparison to Philadelphia last year. The gigantic, ugly stadium looked half-empty, the fans were not as into it as Philly fans were, and Dallas didn't have the scenery, landmarks or their own Cowboy fans on board. As Philadelphia used the Parkway as a beautiful backdrop to the draft, all Dallas had was a parking lot for it's draft activities.
After this, hopefully the draft returns to Philly sometime soon.

IN MY LIFE- COSBY
Bill Cosby is guilty. Was there any doubt? I'm sure there will be appeals. Cosby showed his true colors by swearing in court after the verdict.
He still is getting special treatment. Cosby was allowed to go home until the July sentencing. 80-years-old or not, he needs to go to prison. Cosby is a sick, disgusting animal.
Nice to see the smirk wiped off his ugly mug. He deserves whatever punishment he gets. Maybe I feel so bitter about this because of the crimes, of course, but also because he let down so many people who believed in him and looked up to him.
It's a reality check for his wife, who was badly betrayed. She stood by him, which a devoted wife does, whether she knows the truth or not. So I can't blame her for looking foolish. Unless she covered up for Cosby, his wife will be looked upon with sympathy.
Cosby was an actor as well as a comedian. When the guilty verdict was read the actor lost his cool and revealed who he really is.
Cosby will have it easy in jail. He will go to a country club type setting, not a Gratersford prison. Money and power talks. But like a caged animal he will lose his freedom for a good chunk of his remaining life. Most of all, his name will forever be associated with disgrace, not humor or laughter. His legacy will now be one of shame.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, EAGLES
- Phillies bounced back Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park by beating Arizona 5-3. Despite a sloppy game where thee Phils committed three errors, a late three-run homer to dead center field by Aaron Altherr saved the day.
Jake Arrieta pitched another solid outing, allowing only one earned run in seven innings. Arrieta went to 3-0 so far in the early season.
Scott Kingery didn't start, but he did pinch-hit and struck-out for the fifth time in a row. He is clearly struggling, swinging and flailing at balls in the dirt, ala Maikel Franco. Hopefully he figures it out and adjusts. Is the fact he is constantly changing positions hurting him offensively?
Cesar Hernandez continues to be solid at the plate, but I worry about his defense, as I do with shortstop J.P. Crawford. Catching is also a big concern, as both Alfaro and Knapp strike-out too much and are lacking defensively. Getting a catcher at the trade deadline would be a challenge, as a good catcher is rare and valued. Not sure what catchers would be available in the off-season thru free agency. Draft a young, promising catcher in June is an option but he would still be years away form Philly.
For now, the team has hitched its wagon to Alfaro and Knapp. Hopefully at least one emerges as a solid backstop. Both have shown flashes of potential. The Phillies aren't giving up- not that they have much choice.
The ridiculous Facebook-only game occurs this afternoon, the rubber game of the Phillies- Diamondbacks series. It's big, as beating the D-backs- who happen to have the best record in the National League- would show these 2018 Phillies aren't just beating bad teams. Having the game only broadcast on Facebook is baseball suicide. It's geared for the millennials, who can watch the game on their phones or other devices. But millennials really don't care about baseball. it's too slow takes too much time to think.
Closer Hector Neris nearly blew the save last night. He rarely has a 1-2-3 ninth, always drama with him. There has got to be a cleaner option for closer down the road. I keep thinking of that horror show in Los Angeles almost a year to the day when Neris surrendered three consecutive home runs in a shocking Dodger comeback win.
Give Arrieta credit. He was booed when he gave up a walk with the bases loaded. When asked his reaction later, Arrieta said he didn't blame the fans, unlike Claude Giroux.
- Speaking of Giroux, in an interview yesterday, he downed the Flyer fans for their boos thru-out their disastrous playoff loss to the Penguins. He is a disgrace. He should be traded or have the C ripped off his uniform. What are the fans supposed to do when the inconsistent, unemotional Flyers give up a total of 18 goals in just 3 home playoff games to Pittsburgh? Cheer them? He is clearly out of touch and too soft. The Orange and Black lack heart, and while the rest of our sports teams have taken up the banner after the Eagles' Super Bowl victory, the pathetic Flyers didn't show up against their cross-state rivals.
The Pens won all five games this year in Philadelphia. Sidney Crosby, the most hated player in the NHL, went wild and unchecked in the series. At times the Flyers looked lackadaisical and didn't seem to care. Yet diva Giroux has got his feelings hurt because the Philly fans demanded effort, after paying so much frigign' money to attend the games.
More and more I think the Flyers need to clean house and go strictly with their young and up-coming guys. Would they be a better team without Giroux, who had a banner season? No, but think of what they could get in return a player who will soon be in decline anyway.Get a true No. 1 goalie or let the promising Carter Hart come up and play. Change coaches to a more passionate leader. Just don't be stupid and criticize your loyal fans just because you suck.
- Will be fun to see Dallas host- and botch- draft this weekend. Will Foles be traded tonight? Will Mychal Kendricks be dealt? Who will Birds select? Will they trade down and get extra picks? Who will announce the Birds' first pick?
I think they do trade down- may more than once- and grab as many picks as possible. With No. 32, why not trade with a team that needs a quarterback? (the Giants?). Get a high second rounder, a third, and maybe more. After all, it is a first round pick you are trading away.
When the Eagles do pick, will they take a difference-making running back? What about a linebacker or secondary help? Always a need for line help. If there is a surprise, as GM Howie Rossman loves to do on Draft Day, what will it be?

IN THE NEWS- FOR ASPIRING DOCTORS WITH DISABILITIES, MANY MED SCHOOLS COME UP SHORT
From WHYY..
Being a medical student or resident is hard enough, but what if you have a disability that adds to the challenge?
One medical resident with a physical disability was about a year and a half into training when the health care institution finally installed an automatic door he needed. Another student faced frustrations when barraging accommodations for taking tests, with it seeming like the medical school was "making up rules along the way." When another resident first sought support, the disability representative for the school was allegedly unfamiliar with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
These firsthand experiences are documented in a report issued recently by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the University of California-San Francisco about the accessibility and inclusion of students and doctors with disabilities in the medical field. The culture and the environment surrounding disabilities varies widely, it found, with some places doing far better than others.
About 1,500 medical students in the U.S. have disclosed a disability and receive formal accommodations. That's about 3,7 percent of students, according to the report, and represents a lower percentage than undergraduate programs, in which about 11 percent of students, on average, disclose a disability. The report found that in medicine especially, my students hide their disability out of a "fear of judgement , bias and skewed perception of ability."
Medicine is an incredibly tough and competitive field where, historically, doctors have been viewed as superhumans, operating at the highest physical and mental capacity at all hours of the day and night, performing miracles and saving lives. There's an expectation of perfection.
But doctors are human, too.
A lack of understanding about disabilities can create big challenges for otherwise qualified and talented future doctors, said Lisa Meeks, co-author of the report and a disabilities expert at the University of Michigan Medical School. Yet some schools may not even be aware of what they could be doing to foster a more inclusive environment.
"I don't know of a school that doesn't want to do the best practice," said Meeks, who is also co-founder of the Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science and Medical Education, adding that schools might just not have the tools.
For Dr, Geoffrey Young, AAMC's senior director for student affairs and programs, the nearly 100-page report is a much-needed blueprint for medical institutions to better serve students with disabilities, whether those disabilities be the easily identifiable physical kind or invisible ones.
"I think we have to do a better job of educating those in the field about what the potential is for those with disabilities, versus what is consumed or assumed to be an automatic inability," Young said, adding that the culture is shifting in medicine. "We are having this conversation in a very open way."
The report identifies very clear barriers and considerations schools can take in response. That includes everything from the way disabilities are discussed in the admissions process to having a person within the institution who is well-versed in both disability access issues and medical school requirements, to help future doctors better navigate their training.
For Dr. Lina Mahta, associate dean for admissions at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, improvements start with changing attitudes and approaches at the onset. Case was cited in the report as a positive example for the disabilities language it has adopted in its materials.
:In admissions, we sort of dictate the face and function of what medicine is going to look like by virtue of who we bring in," Mehta said. Having a more diverse future physician population, on that includes people with disabilities, improves the field's ability to understand and care for patients, she said. "It's critical we bring in a group of learners and future practitioners who will mirror patient populations that they're taking care of."

Patriotism
On this date in 1976, Chicago Cubs outfielder Rick Monday became a national hero of sorts- and received a bicentennial commendation from President Gerald Ford- when Monday rescued an American flag that two protesters were attempting to burn in center field of Dodger Stadium.
The two protesters were a father and his 11-year-old son.
(Los Angeles, California).

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS
- The Phillies played a sloppy game in the rain last night, losing to Arizona 8-4 and snapping their modest 4-game winning streak. Errors, passed balls, wild pitches and general lackluster play even before the steady showers moved in.
The club struck-out 16 times, far too much. For the first time I see Scott Kingery as being over-matched. He had the Golden Sombrero Tuesday night, fanning 4 times. Hopefully he can adjust without being sent down to Lehigh valley. Not playing a position every single day may be hurting him.
I worry about the catching as well, specifically Jorge Alfaro, who is also striking-out at an alarming rate. His defense is suspect. Andrew Knapp at least puts the ball in play. Catching may be a position to upgrade either in the upcoming draft and/or free agency.
Vince Valasquez continues to frustrate. He has been pitching better as of late, throwing more strikes. Despite a shaky outing against the Diamondbacks, Valasquez left the game only down a run before the bullpen surrender three more.
This is a key series against the D-backs, who have the best record in the National League at 16-6. Have the Phillies merely beaten up inferior talent vs teams like the Marlins, Rays and Reds? Will a really good team, like Arizona, be a different story, even at Citizens Bank Park> The Diamondbacks have now won nine straight games in Philadelphia ( and they only visit once a year).Arizona has been a pesky team for the Phils to handle for years, even when they weren't so good.
Kudos to the two fans who were in the stands last night late in the ballgame. Between the steady rain and the Sixers playing across the street, it was eerie seeing all the empty blue seats at Citizens Bank Park.
Big match-up tonight, weather permitting, as Jake Arrieta goes against Arizona's ace Zach Greinke. The Phillies are now 14-8, still in second place in the East, now 1 1/2 games behind the Mets.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, EAGLES, BASEBALL
- Tonight the Sixers should finish-off the Miami Heat and move on to round two of the NBA playoffs. Think of that: Only two years ago the team won 10 games all season. Now Joel Embiid plays his very first- and not to be his last- home playoff game. I look for him to come up big, as well as the entire team, not wanting to return to Miami for a Game 6.
- The Phillies hope to continue their winning ways against the NL West leading Arizona Diamondbacks. Taking a series from the tough D-backs would show me something. The sexy game of the three-game series is Wednesday night when Jake Arrieta faces Zach Greinke. Nice to have a true No. 1 starter to match vs other aces in the league.
Each day with Gabe Kapler's line-up is like going to a Bruce Springsteen concert- you never know the line-up. The Boss changes his set-list nightly. Kapler changes his line-up daily as well. Will Franco sit and Kingery play third again/ What about shortstop for Crawford? Odubel is hitting well but when will he get a break?
- The Eagles continue to prepare for the upcoming draft. I still think they trade down to collect a few more picks. Is getting a No. 2 and No. 3 for the 32nd overall selection good enough? No. 32 is a prime spot as teams may want to jump up and take a first round type quality guy with low first round money.
Speaking of the Birds, controversy is brewing about whether the team should go to the White House for the traditional Super Bowl-winning ceremony with the president. In this case a few of the players have already spoken out that they won't go to meet with President Trump. That's fine. As with the standing for the National Anthem, everyone has a right. So does the team and organization want to show solidarity and not go if a few players back out of the invitation? What about the people who want to experience the White House and who are Trump supporters?
- Baseball: some random thoughts as we ease into another April week of baseball. The weather is slowly warming and so are the races...
AL East- The Red Sox are 17-4 and reminding the Yankees who still rules in the division. The Bosox did lose two straight in Oakland over the weekend, including getting no-hit. Their hot start has overshadowed the Blue Jays' good start at 13-8. The Yankees are 12-9 and may be coming out of their early-season funk. Tampa Bay and Baltimore are as expected- bad teams.
AL Central- Cleveland is the only club in this division that is playing over .500 ball. The twins remain a long-term threat but I see the Indians as having few problems this summer. Detroit, the White Sox and Kansas City all seem to be in rebuilding mode.
AL West- Houston and Anaheim should have a good battle all year. Mike Trout already leads the majors with nine home runs. Seattle will be on the bubble for a wild card spot, nut no one else will threaten in this division.
NL East- The Phillies are the big story here. Vegas has recalculated their odds and now the Phils have the best odds of actually winning the East at 36%. The Nationals are second with 30%. The current front-runner, the Mets, are only a 24% favorite to win the division. Washington is 5 1/2 games back. You know they will surge sooner or later, so every Nationals loss is good long-term. Atlanta will trend water all year, unless rookie Ronald Ocuna shines as expected. The Marlins are a hopeless cause.
NL Central- The Pirates were on top of this division until they were swept four games in Philly. St. Louis is always in the mix, as they are now. Ditto Milwaukee. The Cubs are lurking, only a pair of games back of first. The Reds are already looking forward to next season.
NL West- Big-time series for first place Arizona this week in Philadelphia. Don't look now but suddenly the Dodgers are over .500 and in second place in the division, only four behind the Diamondbacks. The Giants and Rockies are around .500 and the Padres are seven out, waiting for their prospects in the best farm system in baseball to emerge.

IDOL CHATTER- MONDAY NIGHT
It was the best night of American Idol so far, with do-or-die performances and drama. Here are my thoughts..
- Idol ratings jumped from an all-time low last week when it was pitted against a country music awards show. Plus the duets part of the series is pretty boring. The live shows bring out the real interest and competition.
- The four who left, Mara, Jonny, Garrette and Marcio deserved to get the ax. I liked the format, which built drama for the entire two hours.
The two guy heart-throbs, Jonny and Garrette, in the end just couldn't sing well enough. Plus they got a case of the nerves. I guess not enough teen-aged girls voted to keep them both in, or they split the teenybopper vote.
Mara proved to be too young, too immature and too blubbery for America. Marcio was just plain blubbery, crying too much. A sad story ( he adopted his sister's baby boy) only gets you so far. it is a singing competition. I think America just got tired of seeing his pouty face. Plus his song choices ( butchering "It's A Miracle" on Sunday night) were awful.
- The internet is bitching this morning about not enough females, people of color and lesbians not getting in. Maybe the people who voted Trump into office are the same people voting for Idol, but I think America has good taste. It was a real turn-off to hear these soft judges repeatedly admonish America for their vote. I couldn't stand their holier-than-thou attitude, like we are the stars and we know better. Give me a break!
If the judges weren't so boring and did evaluate talent better they would've gotten better singers into the final competition.
Anyway, as it turned out, six of the ten finalists are female. Three are of color. One is Latino. Two are self-proclaimed gay. So, what's the problem?
- Ada, the drag queen, was saved by the judges. I just think America knows a gimmick,a con-job when they see it. The judges won't be able to save Ada every week. She can sing, but well enough? And the whole diva, look at me, I'm bigger than the show concept is a drag ( pardon the pun). anymore. Sooner or later Ada will get the boot. There will be more bitching, but life will go on.
We are too sensitive anymore, even with a mindless entertainment vehicle like Idol. Everything must be politically correct. You gotta have so many people of color, or minorities, or people of different religions or sexual orientations. Forget if they can actually sing or not. It's stupid.
- Catie, the awkward, annoying, geeky girl lives on, and she's actually singing better. I can't see her winning, but I can see her sticking til the end.Rocker Cade is still my favorite. Even if he doesn't win I can easily see him with a career similar to Daughtry.
Michelle, the Latino Selena-wannabe may be saved by the young, Latino vote ( the judges advised her to use her ace-card of singing bilingual) but won't win. Maddie Poppie, the sweet, coffee-shop-type crooner, who makes awesome song choices, will stick too. As will blonde gabby, who is striking on-stage and sings well too.
Dennis and Michael J. sort of fall into the same category, although America voted for quirky Michael J. and he seems the more interesting of the two. But can he win? The country guy, Caleb bring a Scottie McCreary quality every time.
Next week the top 10 sings Disney songs. I can't imagine Cade doing "When You Wish Upon A Star." The night does suit someone like Ada, who can dress like a Disney princess and belt out a showtune.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS
- The fun, fantastic Phillies sweep the Pirates in their 4-game series. First time the Phils have swept a 4-game series from Pittsburgh since 1983. They are now 14-7 on the season, only 1/2 game behind the Mets for first place in NL East. They are 9-1 at Citizens Bank Park, with six games left in this current home stand.
- Aaron Altherr didn't start again yesterday but ended up going 3-3 and getting the game-winning hit in the 11th inning ( his first walk-off hit in his career). After looking listless most of the game the team came alive late, rallied once again and beat Pittsburgh.
The Bucs came into Philadelphia with a 12-6 record and first place in NL Central. They limp out of town 12-10 and behind both St. Louis and Milwaukee.
- Big games coming up this week at home as the streaking Phillies face a team with an even better record (15-6), the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona made the playoffs last year, getting swept by the Dodgers. They are leading the West. They always play well in Philly, led by All-Star Paul Goldschmidt. The Phils have been beating up lesser teams, like the Reds, Rays and Marlins. Now let's see how they match-up with a really good club like the D-backs.
Atlanta comes to CBP this weekend, after beating the Phillies 4 out of 6 games in Atlanta early in the season. The Braves should be close in the division, so revenge will be on the Phillies' minds.
- Manager Gabe Kapler is smiling more and seems much more relaxed. OK< it was probably premature to call for his firing after the first few games of the season when Kapler was relying heavily on analytics and making odd baseball decisions. I think the reception he got from the media and fans during the teams' initial home stand was a wake-up call for Kapler. He is managing to blend analytics ( now called "information") with common sense and old-school managing. He is still platooning players at an alarming rate, but has stabilized the bullpen. As long as he keeps winning his quiry style and personality will fly in Philadelphia.
- The Flyers surrendered an embarrassing 18 goals in three playoff home losses to the penguins. They simply didn't deserve to win. How can a team play so well in 2 of 3 games in Pittsburgh yet look so damn bad at home? The Pens intimidated the young Flyers. After going up 4-2 yesterday afternoon, when it looked like the series would shift back to Pittsburgh for a deciding Game 7, the Flyers choked.
- As stated previously, the Flyers aren't going anywhere without a true No.1 goalie and a new coach. They were too inconsistent all season, often without emotion.
- Both the Sixers and Flyers are young, upcoming teams. Between our two winter teams, why do the 76ers look so confident and the Flyers looked so passive? Talent has a lot to do with it. But in Nolan Patrick, the Orange and Black have a high draft selection. Both squads are sprinkled with veterans. So why have the Sixers' vets ( like Reddick and Bellinelli) stepped up while the Flyers' vets ( Simmonds, Giroux) were invisible in the playoffs? Why is one team practically unbeatable at home yet another looked jittery in front of their home crowd?
-Speaking of the red-hot Sixers, they can finish the heat Tuesday night in South Philly. I think they will. Who is gonna stop them? If Embiid isn't playing well, Simmons steps up. And so on and so on.
- The Eagles reworked guard Brandon Brooks' contract to free more cap space. Howie Rossman is gearing up for the draft later this week. Look for more wheelin' and dealin'.

IDOL CHATTER- SUNDAY NIGHT
The live shows finally began Sunday night. 14 performances as America votes ( along with the judges) to set the top 10. Here are my thoughts..
- I can see why Idol may be experiencing low ratings. The judges are too nice and boring; many of the contestants really can't sing; a fake, plastic atmosphere, with all the flashing lights and video boards. Idol may not return next season because of low ratings and high production costs. Maybe no one really cares anymore?
- So, the judges. Lionel didn't say a bad word about anyone all night. He is getting tiresome with his sage-like, grandfather advice , his name-dropping and stories of his Commodores' days. Katy is way overpaid at $25 million this season. She was cute and funny earlier during auditions. now she is annoying with all of the phony fawning over male singers. Luke adds absolutely nothing.
I said it when ABC announced that American Idol was coming back: give Simon whatever he wants to return. Double Katy's salary and pay Simon. He is worth it. He is brutally honest. He had chemistry with Randy and Paula. You never knew what Simon would say. Getting his approval was a big deal to winning Idol back then. Even if you didn't win, a record contract may still be coming your way. People detested Simon but watched him.
- America picks their favorite six. The remaining eight must sing again tonight, as the judges pick four to stay and four to go home.
- Here is a brief synopsis of each singer last night:
Jurnee- Will make it tonight but ultimately she won't win.
Dennis- Same story. Good but lacking something.
Cade- Simply the best. Even if he doesn't win he will have a rock career, ala Daughtry.
Catie- Still annoying as hell. But she will make the top 10. Her song was OK last night. America needs to boot her down the road.
Ada- I'm so confused with the drag queen. It's all a gimmick and the judges are buying it. Maybe they were told by network executives to worship Ada for the curiosity and ratings? She/he makes it but can't imagine she/he ever winning. Outfit last night was bizarre. So was screaming song choice of Queen's "The Show must Go On."
Maddie- Silky-smooth voice and original song choices, from "Brand New Key" to "Homeward Bound". Easily makes it thru.
Caleb- Country guy, didn't have the best night but sticks. Lost 80 pounds from auditions, so someone has already gotten to him regarding imagine.
Michelle- Selena-like, jumping around. Thinks she is the next great Latin pop star. I think she gets cut.
Gabby- Sweet and powerful voice. She makes it but is she flashy enough to get noticed?
Marcio- I'm a Barry Manilow fan, and this guy totally butchered "It's A Miracle." He was off-key and pitchy and I don't think America will connect with the song choice. He didn't cry until the end. He's a goner.
Jonny- He can't sing, plain and simple. Heart-throb No. 1 goes home.
Garrette- He can't sing either. Heart-throb No. 2 goes home.
Mara- Cries and blubbers. Too young and immature. She goes too.
Michael J.- Didn't like the song but passes the test to the next round.
OK, that's 5 going home, so let's say one of the heart-throbs somehow weasels-in. Tonight should be interesting. Will there be a surprise? Even if America hates someone like the drag queen, look for the judges to save, in the name of ratings.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES
- The Sixers had a gut-check win yesterday in Miami, taking a 3-1 lead in the playoff series. Despite too many turnovers, the 76ers, especially Ben Simmons, stepped up in the 4th quarter and put the heat in a major hole. I love the way Simmons glides and slashes down the lane, love the way he ferociously attacks the basket with hammer dunks, love the way he can see the total court and makes magical passes. He makes everyone else better. Hard to believe that Simmons is only a rookie.
The 76ers are a young, exciting, fun squad, a team that will only get better with time. Even though key vets such as Reddick and Bellinelli have solidified the team, its young core of Embiid, Simmons Saric and Fultz are the hope of the future.
Embiid stated he had a "shitty" game, but he and the Sixers stepped-up in the 4th quarter and stole the game. Give Miami credit too. It was a do-or-die game for the Heat, who realistically can't come back from a 3-1 deficit, especially with two of the games in Philly. Embiid brings defense, energy and heart to the floor when he plays.
The Sixers look to finish off the heat Tuesday night in Philadelphia.
- The Phillies beat Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon, 6-2, winning their third game in a row, moving to 13-7 on the young season, second place in national League East, only a single game behind the first place New York Mets. They also move to an impressive 8-1 at Citizens Bank Park, their best opening mark since 1981.
- Rhys Hoskins knocked in 4 runs, including his fourth home run of the season to put the Phils ahead for good. Aaron Nola had another impressive start. Carlos Santana had a solid game and seems to be coming out of his early slump. Odubel Herrera, when his head isn't in the clouds, continues to play well, extending his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games. Scott Kingery started at shortstop and chipped-in with a hit.
- The surprising and surging Phillies go for the sweep of the Buccos this afternoon. They still have 6 games remaining on the home stand, against NL West leader Arizona and Atlanta. After next Sunday, the Phillies will have played the Braves nine times already. They have yet to play Washington.
- Going for the Pittsburgh sweep today, as the Phillies play the Pirates, while across the street the Flyers try to tie series against Penguins. Vets need to step-up again, as they did in Game 5.
- Putting the cherry on top of an exciting sports week, the Eagles and the draft will steal the headlines for a few days. Will the Birds pick at No. 32 or trade down for extra draft selections? What positions will the organization focus on? Will any veterans ( Kendricks, Foles) be traded in the three days in Dallas?

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, PHILLIES
- I was wrong. The Flyers, to their credit, showed heart and won in Pittsburgh Friday night to extend their playoff series to Game 6 Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.Hard to believe the Flyers would lose all three home games in the series, so I look for them to win tomorrow and force a decisive Game 7 back in Pittsburgh.
The Penguins are still the better team. The Orange and Black is lack a true No. 1 goalie. They remain inconsistent and sometimes unemotional. But anything can happen in a Game 7. Win on Sunday and the Flyers play with house money. Lose, especially getting blown out once again at home, and changes should be made after the season is over.
- The Phillies took their second game from another Pittsburgh team, the Pirates. The Phils did just enough to win on Friday night, 2-1. With the win the team goes to 12-7 overall and 7-1 at Citizens Bank Park. It's their best record at home to start a season since 1981. They are in second place in national League East, only two games behind the first place New York Mets.
- Herrera, Santana and Franco each had two hits. Hernandez continues to shine, both at bat and in the field. Kingery had the night off.
- Aaron Nola goes tonight against the Buccos, with Nick Pivetta wrapping up the four-game series on Sunday.

It was on April 22, 2004, that ex-NFL player-turned-soldier Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire in the mountains of Afghanistan.
Tillman joined the United States Army Rangers in May of 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. After completing his fourth season in the NFL, Tillman turned down a contract offer of $3.6 million over three years from the cardinals to enlist in the U.S. Army.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS
- Jake Arrieta, the $75 million man, showed up big last night, striking out 10 in 7 innings and only giving up one hit to Pittsburgh, as the Phillies won 7-0.Nice to know Arriata and Nola are at the top of the rotation. Not likely to have many long losing streaks this summer.
- The team moved to 11-7 on the early season, tied with Atlanta for second in NL East, 2 games behind the Mets. New York continues their series in Atlanta while the Phils face the pirates all weekend. The Phils are now 6-1 at home. If they win tonight they tie their best start at home since 1993. They are 30-18 at Citizens Bank Park since July 9 last summer.
-Reliever Victor Arano has now retired all 25 batters he has faced this year, 32 total since last season. The major league record is 44 straight.
- The Phillies' catchers so far have been a disappointment. They aren't hitting enough to make up for their defensive lapses. Too early to give up on Alfaro and Knapp, but is a young, stud catcher may be a priority in the upcoming draft?
- I love the way Scott Kingery plays, and he truly is the second baseman of the future, but Cesar Hernandez really is a good player. He is always on base. He can bunt for a hit. He doesn't use his speed enough when stealing bases. He's solid defensively. He hits an occasional home run. GM Klentek may end up trading him in July for pitching help, but I wouldn't do it unless there is a nice package coming back.
- Hoskins has three homers and is hitting over .325 but he is striking out more than last year.
- The fans who thought the Sixers should keep Joel Embiid out must feel pretty foolish today. Jojo lit up Miami last night. He brings energy to the team and a defensive presence. So what if the team doesn't shoot as many 3-pointers? The Sixers can't go far, in the long run, without Embiid.
- Embiid looked terrifying in his welder-like black mask to protect his face. He is the self-proclaimed Phantom of the Process. You gotta love his personality. Say what you want about the other young stars in the city, like Hoskins, Wentz and Simmons- Embiid is the most fun and entertaining.
- Hope I'm wrong but tonight should be the end of the road for the Flyers. No way the Penguins want to go back to Philadelphia. It may be the last rodeo for coach Hakstol and maybe GM Hexstall too. Whatever happens with the front office, the veterans came up small in the playoffs. The need for a true No. 1 goalie became even clearer. There is hope with the young kids, but right now the Flyers simply aren't good enough to compete for a Cup.

Week 6 Thurs. Oct. 11 @ Giants 8:20
Week 7 Sun. Oct. 21 Panthers 1:00
Week 8 Sun. Oct. 28 @ Jaguars (London) 9:30 am.
Week 9 Bye
Week 10 Sun. Nov. 11 Cowboys 8:20
Week 11 Sun. Nov. 18 @ Saints 1:00
Week 12 Sun. Nov. 25 Giants 1:00
Week 13 Mon. Dec. 3 Redskins 8:15
Week 14 Sun. Dec. 9 @ Cowboys 4:25
Week 15 Sun. Dec. 16 @ Rams 8:20
Week 16 Sun. Dec. 23 Texans 1:00
Week 17 Sun. Dec. 30 @ Redskins 1:00
- Perfect balance! Home and away alternate until Week 12
- Two Thursday nights a first for Birds.
- Great road trips for fans, going to Nashville, Los Angeles, New Orleans as well as London, England.
- Speaking of London, that's an away game for Philly- another break. Even though Jacksonville doesn't sell-out, they would for the defending Super Bowl champs. In London, it's a neutral game. Actually, the way Eagles' fans travel, it may be considered a home crowd. I'm sure a lot of Londoners will also jump on the bandwagon after watching the Eagles win last February.
- Good amount of 1:00 games. Only games which may be flexed late in year are Weeks 11, 12, 16 and 17.
- The two Cowboy games should be meaningful this season. 5 of 6 NFC East division games are after Week 9 bye ( which comes at perfect time, after the London trip).
- Toughest stretch looks like two road games on Dec. 9 and 16 vs. Dallas and Rams. Don't overlook the Giants game in New York on Thursday night, Oct. 11. The Eagles will only have 4 days to prepare, coming off a late Sunday key game vs. Minnesota the Sunday before. It's a division game, plus the giants' first crack at the defending Super Bowl champs.
- The schedule could've been tougher, being a first place team, but in Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Tennessee, the Birds have a chance to get off to a good start, especially if Wentz is still out. Key games against Vikings, Rams, Cowboys, Saints, Panthers and Jags come later when Wentz should be back.
- Last year the team went 13-3, won the NFC East and earned home field advantage. Is till see them winning the division. Even 11 or 12 wins should get it done. 13 will be tough again, as teams will be gunning for the Eagles. If Philly wins the East, it will be the first time since 2004 that same team has won the division two years in a row.
- I went a perfect 19-0 picking Eagle games last season, playoffs included. Can I do it again?
- Even though the Falcons have revenge on their minds, and we remember what Kansas City did in New England opening night last season, the Eagles should ride the emotional wave of raising their championship banner and beat Atlanta. Nick Foles shines again.Win
- Still hot in Tampa, but Bucs aren't ready to handle Birds. I do look for a tough game in Florida, however.Win
- Colts shouldn't be a problem for Philly at the Linc in Week 3. The return of Frank Reich. He does know the Eagles' personnel.Win
- Eagles could have trouble in Tennessee as they square off with Marcus Marcus Mariotta. Loss.
- Vikings will be thirsty for revenge as well. Got a feeling this one won't be a blow-out. Eagles win, knowing this could be a key tie-breaker down the road. Win
- Trap game. Division contest, short week, coming off big one vs. Minnesota. Somehow New York upsets Birds. Loss
- Eagles pissed after Giants loss. Makes Cam Newton and Carolina pay. Win
- Eagles travel well to London. Beware of jet-lack and inexperience playing in Europe. Jags are vets at playing in London. Still, i like Eagles to impress Brits. Win
- Birds will be 6-2 going into bye .Good shape for tougher second part of schedule.
- I like Eagles to beat Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, needing to even division record at 1-1. Should be well rested after coming home from England.Win
- Tough one in Superdome vs Saints. Sneaky feeling that Drew Brees will shine. Loss
- Consecutive home wins vs Giants and Redskins, as Birds gain revenge against Giants after Thanksgiving. Win
- Extra time to rest and prepare for first match-up with Kirk Cousins-less Redskins. Monday Night affair. Win
- Consecutive road losses coming up. Don't panic. Dallas finally beats Eagles at home. Loss
- Rematch with Rams in LA. Rams win. Hope this doesn't cost Birds home field advantage. Loss
- Eagles right ship by beating Texans at home. Rare appearance by Houston in Philly. Birds go 8-0 a home. Win
- Need this game in Washington for playoff seeding purposes. Win.
Final record 11-5. Win NFC East. 2nd in NFC to Rams.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- APRIL 20
"He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today. I think it's just God disguised as Michael Jordan."
- Larry Bird
On this date in 1986, the Chicago Bulls' Michael Jordan scored 63 points in game two of a first-round NBA playoff series against the Boston Celtics, setting a post-season scoring record.
Despite Jordan's achievement, the bulls would lose to the Celtics in double overtime, 135-131. Boston would sweep the three-game series and go on to win the NBA championship.

IN MY LIFE- DISABILITY NEWS- WHEEL OF FORTUNE
Last night on Wheel of Fortune there was a female contestant in a wheelchair. This was news to me for several reasons: It was one of the first times I've seen someone with a disability on a game show ( there was a blind contestant on Jeopardy a few seasons ago). It also gives me encouragement that attitudes towards people with disabilities is changing, and it's do-able for others to try out in the future.
The woman had her husband with her as her "designated spinner". He spun the wheel but wasn't allowed to help solve puzzles or call out letters.
She was good and ended up winning the night, going to the Bonus Round.Host Pat Sajak seemed a little awkward with the situation and wondered aloud how they would do the Bonus Round. The contestant was able to spin the smaller wheel, and her husband picked up the envelope before he wheeled her to the spot to attempt to solve the final puzzle. She didn't, missing out on a car.
Otherwise, there were no special provisions or favors. She won fair and square.
It was refreshing to see someone with a disability ( she teaches second grade) on such a high-profile show. I may take the test and see if I qualify, as I worried "how would I spin the wheel?" It opens the door for me and others in my situation to have the same fun and enjoyment as able-bodied people.
Plus I may get to meet Vanna White!

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS, NFL NEWS, BRUNO
- Even though the Phillies lost in Atlanta last night, and lost the series 2 games to 1, they ended up with a winning road trip, thanks to their sweep of the Rays in Tampa Bay. They are 10-7, tied with the braves for second place in National League East, 3 games behind the New York Mets. They come home tonight for 10 games, facing the surprising pirates, the always-tough Diamondbacks, and seek revenge against the Braves.
- Bad night in Atlanta. Rally-killer Santana grounded into a double play with first and third and no outs. Hoskins struck out with the bases loaded. Crawford whiffed three times. Franco had two hits but started pulling off the ball again, flailing at several pitches low and away. Williams and Altherr continue to hit near .150. Bad starts or is early platooning hurting players?
- Pitcher Vince Valasquez looks better the last few starts. Not nibbling as much, Valasquez is going after hitters and getting ahead in the counts. Valasquez gave up 3 runs in 6 innings Wednesday night but overall had a solid outing.
- I like the combo of Hernandez and Kingery at the top of the line-up. A nice combination of speed and power.
- The Flyers are cooked. Embarrassed again, they lost 5-0 at home to the defending champion Penguins. Simply put, until the Flyers get another coach and a true No. 1 goalie they aren't going anywhere. They aren't good enough. Outscored 10-1 in Philadelphia and looking flat in the process, that's a bad combination for Coach Hakstol.
The Flyers' stars didn't show up. Gerioux, Vorachek and Simmonds were absent.
I wonder what Ed Snider would think if he were around. The problem is fans aren't sure who is the face of this hockey franchise. Comcast? Holmgren? Hextall? Who would step up and fire Hextall, if need be?
Game 5 is in Pittsburgh Friday night. I would be surprised if the Pens allow the series to return to Philly.
- Game 3 in the NBA playoffs is tonight in Miami, with the Sixers and Heat tied at 1-1. Sounds like Joel Embiid will not play. If he is able and willing, he should go tonight. Without Jojo, I have a bad feeling about tonight. A loss and Embiid returns for Game 4 to save the Sixers' season.
- The NFL schedule will be released tonight at 8 pm. Parts of the schedule leak during the day. Rumor is that the opening game on Thursday Night Football may not be against Minnesota after all, but Atlanta. I hope the Cowboy game means something this year. We know the London game vs the Jaguars will be in October. Will the big rematch with the Rams in LA. be a prime-time affair? Will the bye week arrive after the London game? Will the Birds get their share of 1pm. games?
- Legendary pro wrestler Bruno Sammartino died yesterday at age 81. Bruno was the long-time champion when I was growing up. He was old-school wrestling before all the hype, theatrics and drama. He was the hero before Hulk Hogan, a guy who never lost and would rarely wrestle on TV since he was champ.
Bruno was an icon like Sargent Slaughter, Professor Toro Tanaka, Andre the Giant and Gorilla Monsoon. Rest in Peace, Bruno.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS, NFL NEWS
- The Phillies evened their series in Atlanta, winning 5-1 in 10 innings. Scott Kingery was in the middle of the game-winning rally. The rubber game is tonight with the braves before the Phils finally come home to host the Pirates on Thursday night.
- Why is Carlos Santana not getting a night off/ He is still struggling, hitting around .150 and hitting second in the line-up. Why not play Rhys Hoskins at first, or drop Santana lower? So far he has been a rally-killer and a free agent bust. Long way to go in the season, but for now, sit Santana or bat him 5th or lower.
- Kapler was fortunate the Phils scored 4 runs in the 10th inning. He ran out of available position players, after pinch-hitting Jorge Alfaro in the 9th inning. Sooner or later, not having an extra guy on the bench is going to hurt.
- Give Kapler credit for going against the book and pitching closer Hector Neris in the 9th inning of a tie-game on the road. Usually a road team will hold back it's closer until they have a lead. Instead, Neris held down the fort and Drew Hutchinson closed the game in the 110th.
- The Flyers play Game 4 of their playoff series vs the Penguins tonight in South Philly. It's a must-win. going down 3-1 to the defending world champs, and heading back to Pittsburgh, would not be good. If the pattern holds, the Orange and Black will come out with a strong effort tonight.
- Still unsure if Joel Embiid will play tomorrow night in Miami as the Sixers continue their playoff series with the Heat. If he is OK to play he should. I get it that the Sixers' medical staff want to protect Jojo form long-term injury but it is the playoffs. It doesn't matter that the 76ers won 10 in a row without Embiid. The playoffs are a different animal. The games are more intense and teams play harder.
- The NFL schedule is released Thursday night at 8 p.m. Parts of the schedule usually leak during the day. I'll be looking for the dates of the NFC East games, the big rematch with the rams in LA., and the date of the London game vs Jacksonville. Will the team be on prime-time the maximum six times this season?

IN THE NEWS- TRUMP SIGNS BILL ADDING PROTECTIONS FOR SOCIAL SECURITY, SSI RECIPIENTS
By Disability Scoop..
Individuals tasked with handling Social Security payments for people with disabilities will be subject to greater scrutiny under a new law signed by President Donald Trump.
The president signed the measure known as the Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018, or H.R. 4547, late last week after it was unanimously approved by Congress.
The legislation will impose greater oversight on representative payees who manage Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits for those who need assistance.
Specifically, the law bars people with certain types of criminal convictions from acting as representative payees and prevents individuals who have representative payees themselves from serving in that capacity for others. And, it will give beneficiaries more say in who handles money on their behalf by allowing Social Security recipients to make a list of their preferred payees in order of preference.
Meanwhile, the legislation will require that protection and advocacy groups in each state- federally-mandated organizations that provide legal assistance and advocate for people with disabilities- conduct more reviews of representative payee performance on behalf of the Social Security Administration.
In addition to enhancing oversight, the measure will also eliminate a requirement that parents or spouses living with a person with a disability complete an annual accounting form for representative payees.
"This new law is great news for the millions of Social Security beneficiaries who rely on a representative payee to help them manage their benefits," said U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson, R-Texas, who sponsored the legislation. "Not only will it provide much-needed accountability for the representative payee program, but it also puts measures into place that ensure newly selected representative payees are qualified and trustworthy.'
According to the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General, some 6.2 million individuals or organizations act as representative payees on behalf of about 8 million beneficiaries. Such representatives are assigned if the agency determines that a person's mental or physical condition prevents them from being able to manage their benefits.
Proponents of the legislation cited concerns from the Government Accountability Office, the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General, the National Academy of Sciences and the Social Security Advisory Board about how Social Security officials have administered the representative payee program.
"For too long dishonest representative payees have exploited and abused people with disabilities without fear of being discovered,' said Curt Decker, executive director of the National Disability Rights Network, an umbrella group for the nation's protection and advocacy organizations . 'That stops today. We are thrilled to see that Congress has acted to protect the more than 8 million Americans who currently have representative payees."

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, NFL NEWS
- The Phillies snapped their six-game winning streak, losing in Atlanta 2-1. They had chances, but once again, hit poorly with runners in scoring position.
Odubel Herrera hit a firs tinning homer last night, but made two stupid plays to negate his efforts. First he didn't slide on a double attempt. The next inning he shied away from a fly ball. Right fielder Aaron Altherr needed to bail him out with a tremendous catch.
Herrera is a good talent, but he is a stupid, lazy player. He will never change, no matter how much manager Kapler talks to him. GM Klentek should've traded him in the off-season for pitching help and to open an outfield spot.
Another wasted effort by Aaron Nola. The team continues to strike out too much, most notably Franco.
The Phillies are now 9-6 and play the braves again tonight with Nick Pavetta on the mound.
- The Sixers likewise snapped their 17-game winning streak, losing to Miami. It was only their second home loss since Christmas.
They lived by the 3-point shot and last night they died by the 3-point shot, making only 6 of 32 3-pointers at one point. Still, they climbed back from a 16-point deficit in the 4th quarter to within two, before fading.
The 76ers should still beat the Heat in this series, but now they have made it harder on themselves. The team never does play well in Miami, where the next two games will be held.
Joel Embiid is frustrated that he didn't play. He feels the Sixers medical staff is babying him. I see him playing this Thursday. So much for the idiots who felt Embiid shouldn't play while the winning streak was going on.
Game Three is Thursday night in Miami.
- We should know today for sure if the NFL schedule will be released Thursday night, as rumored. Other than the NFC East games, I'll be interested to see when the big match-up with the Rams will occur. I also look for who will play on thanksgiving, a favorite day to watch football. Will the giants play at Dallas the opening weekend, as in the last two seasons? Will the Eagles play the cowboys in the final game of the season again? In Philly or in Dallas/
- Speaking of Dallas, they host the draft next week. It will be interesting to see how they fare against the overwhelming success in Philadelphia last night. Will the birds trade down and not have a Thursday night pick? If Nick Foles isn't traded, I do expect a trade down, as the Eagles need more selections in the second and third rounds.

IDOL CHATTER- MONDAY NIGHT
Monday night was entertaining with the final duets and last cuts to 14. Here are my thoughts..
- A weird group makes it to the final 14. As expected, the drag queen, Ada, made it thru. I still think he/she is a gimmick, but now it's up to America to vote it out. Ada won't win in the end, but will go far and become a celebrity.
Jurnie is the proclaimed lesbian. Marcio is the cryer. Two teen heart-throbs made it. Neither will win because they just aren't good singers.
Maddie Poppie is a coffeehouse-type singer. She won me over with her unique song-choice of "Brand New Key." Cade, the rocker, will go far, as long as he doesn't pigeon-hole himself into rocker only. Catie Turner is the annoying, geeky contestant who took a spot from a far-more deserving singer.
Caleb made it, as the competition needed the lone country singer in the group. The hair-flipping girl is too young, can't really sing, but she made it.
I was OK with the people voted out, except for lil' Layla Spring last week, who, in my opinion, was a much better singer then some who made it this week.
So next week the group is cut form 14 to the top 10. Solo performances, the cut, then live shows begin.
- By the way, Idol had it's lowest ratings ever on Sunday night, lower than even it's FOX days. Is it the poor talent? The judges too-nice act wearing thin? Or people just don't care?
Idol is way too expensive to produce now, even before the bad ratings. Part of the problem is the judges' salaries. Katy is making $25 million. Seacrest and Luke are earning $12 million. Lionel is making $10 million. In total, that;s 60% more than the old days when Simon, Randy and Paula ruled.
Speaking of which, not having Simon on is killing ABC. Ever since Simon left the show has been declining. He was entertaining and honest. ABC should've paid him whatever he wanted to bring him back. That's the secret- no Simon.

The Mick
"Here's the pitch. Mantle swings. There's a tremendous drive going into deep left field! It's going, going! It's over the bleachers... over the sign atop the bleachers...into the yards of houses across the street! It's got to be one of the longest home runs I've ever seen!"
- Mel Allen's broadcast of mickey Mantle's 565-foot, "tape measure" home run on April 17, 1953 at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C.

IDOL CHATTER- SUNDAY NIGHT
My opinion on Sunday night's version of American Idol..
- Clearly the most unique performance was by Maddie Poppie with Melaine's "Brand New Key". I must be old, because even Luke never heard of the song. I remember it form the 70s. Kudos to Maddie for singing it well and having the guts and inventiveness to do it.
- The judges were a bit more critical last night, but still too nice. Simon would law down the law. Lionel gives wise advice but name-drops too much and talks about the past like an old geezer. Katy isn't as charming anymore. She seems to be forcing things. I guess she needs to say something to earn her $25 million Idol fee.Luke is just there. Better team would've been Lionel- Katy- Simon. Imagine the fireworks between outspoken Katy and Simon?
- The heart-throb will get cut. The last guy who doesn't smile with braces..hard to figure out. The flipping- her--hair 15-year-old is annoying but I'm thinking she makes it. Many are just too slick or can't sing. No one wowed me again. That's why it was stupid to cut five last week before the judges heard to final 12. What if everyone this week sucked and one who got cut last week is better?
- The drag queen may have passion and a good voice but...How can anyone take him/her seriously/ It's a joke, especially when the he/she said this was his/her 12th try=out for Idol. Obsessed or what? The drag queen thing is a gimmick, an attention-grabber ( it's worked), because the voice wasn't good enough before. Why didn't he/she make it sooner? Too confusing- a female to perform..a male for final Judgement..a female again last night. The judges love him/her and will send it thru/ Up to American to kick it out.
- Only one true country singer left, Caleb, the Scotty McCreery sound-alike. I'm now thinking he won't win, but I think he goes thru to the Final 14, as the competition need a country singer.
- Got a feeling this mentor Bobby Bones will be around for more than tonight. ABC apparently likes him.The next Ryan Seacrest?
- I've never heard most of these so-called duets stars tonight. The show is playing to millennials. Then we finally get the Final 14. next week starts the real competition. Live shows Theme shows. America votes.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS, EAGLES
- The Phillies won six in a row with a sweep over Tampa Bay over the weekend. It's the first time the Phils swept an American League team since 2003 ( Orioles).
True, the Phillies are beating awful teams ( Marlins, Reds and Rays). but you beat who is on the schedule. What if they had lost most of these games? The team would be trashed.
Scott Kingery did it again. Aaron Altherr is struggling but did crush a three-run homer yesterday. The offense is clicking with big innings and consecutive games scoring at least 10 runs.
On to Atlanta for revenge. Nola goes tonight as the team tries for seven in a row for the first time in seven years. Three games back in NL East, 9-5 and in second place.
Every game we put between us and Washington, the better. The Mets are red-hot at 12-2, but the Nationals are the club to beat in the long run. Getting a cushion on the Nats now will be key for later in the summer.
- The Flyers blew it Sunday afternoon, losing 5-1 in Game Three of their playoff series with defending champion Pittsburgh. The Orange and Black had the momentum after showing heart in a bounce-back 5-1 win in Game Two. Instead, the squad came out strong, dominating the first period but failing to score.
Disappointing, for sure. Now Game Four is a must-win at home. Lose and your'e down 3-1 going back across the state to Pittsburgh. Win and there's hope in a best-of-3 short series, with the penguins having home ice advantage.
Bu the way, Claude Gerioux criticized the so-called "doubters" after the flyers' victory last Friday night. Hey, the team deserved to be criticized after they came out sleep-walking in Game One. They returned to Zombie-like form yesterday. They turtled-up after the Pens woke up and showed some muscle.
Bottom line is, the Pens are simply better. If the two-time champs are alert, not over-confident, and on their game, the flyers, without a true no. 1 goalie and a mediocre coach, can't stay with them..
- The Sixers play Game Two tonight at home, where they are 26-1 since Christmas. The Heat were blown away in Game One. I still think Philly takes the series in five games.
They are a fun team to watch. Will they be even better when Joel Embiid comes back? Even though the 76ers have won 10 straight with Embiid ( 17 in a row overall), it's silly to say they should hold Embiid out, even if he is ready to return .Embiid brings defense, scoring and enthusiasm to the line-up. Why not meld the two styles?
Meanwhile, Cleveland loses their playoff opener Sunday afternoon, getting crushed by Indiana at home. The path to the NBA Finals may be wide open for Philly. One series at a time.
- Eagles news: How stupid was corner back Darrly Worrily by getting arrested near the stadiums early Sunday morning? He was found sleeping in his car in the intersection of Broad and Pattison. He ruined his career by making bad decisions yesterday. He made it even worse by resisting arrest and getting tasered by Philadelphia police.
The Eagles obviously thought he wasn't worth the trouble, cutting him Sunday afternoon. They can add depth to their secondary in other ways.
Meanwhile, Nick Foles told Houston media he still wants to be a starter. He loves Philadelphia, loves the Eagles but... Let's face it- he won't start with the Eagles unless Carson Wentz is injured. With a little over a week until the draft, does GM Howie Rossman make a deal for much-needed draft picks and move Foles? Is Rossman convinced that Wentz will be back for the season opener? Do the Eagles have faith in back-up quarterback Nate Sudfeld in case they do trade Foles and Wentz isn't ready to return?
The next week or so should be very interesting. Meanwhile, the NFL schedule is set to be released sometime this week. Always a favorite time of the year.
- As we start another week of baseball..some observations:
The Mets are 12-2. More surprising is that the Nationals are already 6 games back of New York. How bad are both Florida teams- Marlins and Rays? The Angels look like they are going to give the Astros a run for their money in AL West. Wouldn't it be fun to see mike Trout in the playoffs again? The Dodgers are in last in the West. Never count as St. Louis as they hover just below surprising Pittsburgh in NL Central. The Red Sox are reminding the Yanks they still rule AL East. Will Texas deal Cole Hamels to Phillies if they still suck in July and the Phils are buyers?

Patriot's Day Tradition
Professional runners from all over the world compete in today's Boston Marathon. Every year on the day of the marathon the Boston Red Sox play a home game at Fenway Park starting at 11:05 a.m. When the game ends, the crowd empties the bleachers and stream onto Kenmore Square to cheer home runners that are nearing the 25-mile mark.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, EAGLES, FLYERS
- Sixers destroyed the heat last night to take a 1-0 lead in their opening round playoff series. Their 17-game winning streak is the longest in Philadelphia sports history. No team- Eagles, Phillies, Flyers or even past Sixers- have won as many consecutive games..ever.
They are fun to watch. Scoring 130 points and blowing-out teams on a regular basis is exciting basketball. but the 76ers really took control of the game when they stepped up their defense in the second half.
Ben Simmons is a superstar and should be Rookie of the Year in the NBA. All this without Embiid, who hopefully will join the fun soon. He rang the bell last night before the game, wearing a mask designed to look like the one the Phantom wore in The Phantom of the Opera.
So much for being nervous or having the playoff jitters. so much for the young Sixers not being able to handle the more intense, uptempo pace of postseason.
The Sixers try for a 2-0 lead against Miami on Monday night in South Philly.
- The Phillies won their fifth game in a row, dismantling the Tampa Bay Rays, 9-4. The Phils scored six runs in the 2nd inning. Scott Kingery had two doubles. Kingery returns to his natural position- second base- this afternoon in the getaway game at Tampa.
The Rays, after letting key vets like Evan Longoria go, look to finish last in American League East. How sad is the state of baseball in Florida. Both Sunshine State squads may lose 100 games each this summer.
- Interesting decisions upcoming in the bullpen, as injured veterans like Neshek, Hunter and Leiter Jr. are coming back soon. I like the two lefties, Morgan and Milner, but I still don't trust Ramos and Neris.
- The hot- Phils are now 8-5 and in 2nd place in NL East. The Mets finally lost Saturday night, so the Phillies are 3 back. They move onto Atlanta tomorrow, with an early rematch with the Braves, a far different team then the one that opened the season in Atlanta.
It's been a nice and much-needed run for the Phils, beating up on awful teams like the Marlins, Reds and Now the Rays. The upcoming home stand features two first place teams- the Pirates and Diamondbacks. Also circle the weekend of may 11th on the calendar as the Mets invade citizens Bank Park.
- Newly- acquired Eagle Darryl Worley was arrested early this morning by Philadelphia police. He apparently resisted arrest at 6 am. and had to be tasered. Details forthcoming. As with the Michael Bennett case in Houston ( which has quieted down) , let's find out the facts first before rushing to judgement, one way or another.
- The Flyers are home this afternoon in their playoff match-up with the champion Penguins. Winning Game 3 and taking a 2-1 lead would be big. Winning both home-ice games, taking a commanding 3-1 lead, would force Pittsburghs' back against the wall. Lose and suddenly the pens are back in control and on top.
- So, why not the Sixers? Why not the Flyers? Did anyone really give the Eagles a shot to win the Super Bowl?

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- APRIL 14/15
1968 Masters
"What a stupid I am!"
- Roberto DeVicenzo
On April 14, 1968, Masters officials declared Bob Goalby champion after Roberto DeVicenzo signed his incorrect scorecard. Under the golf rules of the time, the higher score that DeVicenzo signed for stood, meaning that he was credited with a 66 rather than the 65 he actually shot in the final round. And meaning that he was one stroke off the lead rather than tied and heading into a playoff with Goalby.
When Devicenzo realized his mistake, he exclaimed 'What a stupid I am." ( Augusta, Georgia)

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, PHILLIES, SIXERS, NFL NEWS
- The Flyers showed a lot of heart by beating the Penguins last night to even their playoff series 1-1. They couldn't play worse than getting shut-out in Game One, 7-0. Pittsburgh seemed over-confident and sleepwalked thru the first period. Now the series comes to Philadelphia Sunday afternoon for Game 3. What now?
- The Phillies won in Tampa, 2-1, going to 7-5 on the season. They remain in third place in National league East, 4 games behind the red-hot Mets ( who are 11-1). Scott Kingery did it again, cracking a double late in the game and scoring the winning run.
Out of the 21 years of interleague play, the Phils have only had 8 winning seasons against American League teams. Their record against the Rays is now 10-15, second worse in the AL ( they are an incredible 1-12 vs the Angels. Tonight the match-up is Jake Arrieta vs Chris Archer.
- The Sixers are 25-1 at home since Christmas. They play Game One of their playoff series vs the Heat tonight in South Philly.
- Dez Bryant was cut by the Dallas Cowboys yesterday. He made too much money and isn't as good. Bryant led the NFL last season in dropped passes. Hopefully the Eagles don't consider bringing him on. He's a "me" guy, even though it would be sweet to stick the knife into the cowboys with Bryant as an Eagle receiver.

IN MY LIFE- MEMORIES OF HARRY KALAS
Today is 9 years since the great Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas died. Here are some of my fondest memories of Harry the K...
- I only met Harry once. It was at the vet in the 80s. I was underneath the stands with family, having just emerged from watching an inning of the game behind home plate where the grounds crew hang out. It had to be in the middle innings and Harry must've been on a break because he unexpectedly came strolling by and said hello. He was smiling and friendly. I had the honor to shake his hand.
- Of course, my favorite Harry catchphrase was his signature home run call- " That ball is....outta here!" But he had so many, like "Mickey Morandini!", the emphasis on each syllable. It wasn't forced or phony, but natural.
- I was always glad that Harry got to call a World Series game. Back in 1980, when the team won it's first world championship, the local announcers weren't allowed to broadcast the World Series. Harry and Richie Ashburn did do the now-iconic National League Championship Series, especially the thrilling, come-from-behind, Game Five clincher against Nolan Ryan and Houston. Hearing Harry do the final out of the 2008 Series against Tampa Bay was special. He was genuinely excited, which made the listener excited.
- I loved his interaction with Whitey Ashburn. They had a unique chemistry together, similar to the one Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen now have on radio. I loved to listen, not only for their expertise regarding the Phillies' games, but to hear what they would say next. Harry had a homey, comfortable quality about him . His voice was smooth as silk and he made you want to listen. No matter how bad the team played, Harry would make it seem OK.He would never be able to joke around or have the friendly rapport with anyone else ( especially Chris Wheeler) then what he enjoyed with Whitey.
- When Whitey died, I remember how broken-hearted Harry was. It took a lot out of him. I don't think it was the same.Life and baseball goes on, as it did for Harry, but it sure wasn't as much fun.
-I recall the day he died. I was at work, as the Phillies were in Washington to play the Nationals in a mid-week afternoon game. One of the nurses, also a Phillies fan, shockingly asked if I had heard that Harry Kalas had died. I was stunned. he wasn't sick to my knowledge. I couldn't wait to get back to my office and home to find out the details, if true.
Selfishly, I didn't immediately think of his family or friends, or those who would miss him the most. I thought of the fans and how Phillies' games wouldn't be as much fun. Suddenly, things had changed.Baseball was an outlet, an enjoyment to get away from real life problems and worries. Yet, even in sport or hobby, cruel reality crept in. Most of all, I was sad that we would never again hear that golden voice.
- Harry's memory lives on. He has a son, Todd, who works as a broadcaster in baseball. Another son, Cain, has a tremendous, operetta-like tenor and occasionally sings the national Anthem before Phillies' games. Harry the K's restaurant sits at Citizens Bank Park, underneath the gigantic left field scoreboard. There is a bronze, life-size statue of harry outside the concourse in left field. Many fans stop and take pictures of themselves with Harry, a landmark like the famed Rocky statue in Philly.
These physical memories of HK live on. But his voice will always remain. I put on old tapes and DVDs of past ballgames and hear harry and think, "wow, those really were the good ol' days." I miss him but also feel lucky that Philadelphia had harry Kalas for as long as we did.
