THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- FEBRUARY 28

The First Miracle on Ice

On the final day of the 1960 Squaw Valley, California, Winter Olympics, the United States defeated Czechoslovakia, 9-4, in the championship hockey game.

Six goals in the third period earned the U.S. its first hockey gold medal against great odds. The U.S. squad had already gotten by the Soviet Union's defending gold-medal team and six-time Olympic-champion Canada to reach the final. (February 28, 1960).
