THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- FEBRUARY 23

NASCAR Legends

DeWayne "Tiny" Lund

Tiny Lund made his legend at Daytona in 1963 when he rescued fellow driver Marvin Panch from his burning car after a wreck in a practice session that left Panch trapped.

The owners of Panch's car, the Wood brothers, rewarded Lund by asking him to run their car in the event.

Lund went on to win the Daytona 500, the first victory of his career after starting in 131 races,

Tragically, Lund would die in a crash at Talladega in 1975, after winning five races in his 21-year career.
