More thoughts on the Eagles' historic win and aftermath..
* My 3 key plays of the game:
1. The trick play at the goal-line-
So unexpected and bold. Gutsy call by Doug Pederson. Think about who participated in that fourth-and- goal play from the one-yard line: an undrafted rookie running back pitched the ball to a back-up tight end and tossed a pass to the back-up quarterback..in the Super Bowl! It was the first time a quarterback in the Super Bowl caught a touchdown pass. It totally left the Patriots flat-footed, gave the Birds more confidence, and continued the improbably destiny theme.
2. The fumble in the fourth quarter-
Brandon Graham stripped Tom Brady, which set up a field goal which the Eagles tacked on to make a New England comeback even more difficult. It was the only sack of the day by Philadelphia, the only Patriot turnover, which was recovered by rookie Derrick Barnett. It was the big play the Birds needed at the perfect time. It didn't quite seal the championship but it gave Eagle fans a good feeling that victory was within their grasp.
3. Ertz catching fourth down pass in fourth quarter-
This was my key play of the game. Pederson went for it, fourth -and-1 at their own 40-yard-line. The call made sense but it was still aggressive. other coaches may have punted and hoped the defense would stop Brady and get the ball back with two minutes to go. Instead, Foles threw a short pass to the reliable Zach Ertz ( who didn't drop a pass all year). Ertz got the first down, which continued the game-winning drive and ate up more clock to limit an New England rally. Failing on that fourth down play would've been disastrous. Brady would've gotten the ball in Eagles' territory. A field goal would've put the Pats up by four points. The Birds would've needed a TD with time expiring to win the game.
* The Philly fans get the headlines when rioting occurs in the city after a victory celebration. A few knuckleheads destroyed property in the area after the game on Sunday night. But only a handful were arrested. Meanwhile in Boston, Patriot fans set fires and rioted. Someone broke into TE Rob Gronkowski's home and reportedly stole guns. Yet Philadelphia has the bad reputation for having rowdy fans?
* Two evil guys: Donovan McNabb, who is laying low after sexual abuse charges cost him his job at ESPN, tweeted his congratulation to Brian Dawkins for making the Pro Football Hall of Fame- yet no mention of fellow former teammate, Terrill Owens. he and T.O. didn't have a good relationship, but that was 14 years ago. McNabb is a bitter guy.
Tom Brady blew off fellow QB Nick Foles after the game, heading straight to the locker room after defeat. Normally, the opposing quarterbacks find each other on the field after a game, briefly chat or at least shake hands. Instead, spoiled brat Brady, arrogant and pouting, couldn't stand losing and didn't have the class to find Foles.
* Wouldn't it be great if, at April's NFL drat in Dallas, with the 32nd pick in the first round, new Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins, announced the pick, walking to the podium in Dallas, and proudly stating, "The world champion Philadelphia Eagles select..." The Cowboys' Drew Pearson made a fool of himself last spring in Philly, announcing the Dallas selection and embarrassingly slobbered about how great the Cowboys are. Please!
* MVP Nick Foles went to Disney World yesterday, riding on a float in their traditional after Super bowl parade, standing up there with Mickey Mouse. What a story Foles is: after having a great, Pro Bowl season under Chip Kelly in 2013, with 27 touchdown passes and only 2 interceptions, going to St. Louis and Kansas City, also retiring, signing with the Eagles in the off-season, having a sore arm in training camp ( not even playing a down in the pre-season), then stepping in when Carson Wentz got hurt and leading the underdog Birds to their first Super bowl title.
Foles has said that when he finally does retire, he wants to be a pastor. He won't talk about the future, saying he "wants to enjoy the moment." Foles loves Philly and I think he would be satisfied in his back-up role. He knows that Wentz is the present and future quarterback, There shouldn't be an "open competition" in training camp. Foles is great insurance in case Wentz isn't ready in September. But what if the Eagles get a trade offer for Foles, like a first or second-round pick? The Birds need to listen, if they can upgrade another position of need, and if they can find another competent back-up QB.
Either way, it will make for an interesting off-season story.
* So, let's savor the championship for a long time. I'm getting my Eagles championship gear today. In only two short months, the schedule is released for the fall. The draft takes place in Dallas. And free agency will begin. Interesting to note how many guys will want to come to Philadelphia now, knowing the birds are in great shape for years to come.
The Sixers and Flyers will be on the bubble for playoff berths this spring. The Phillies will begin an interesting season, featuring their young, promising prospects. Yet it will still be all-Eagles all the time util we do it all again this fall.
