Counting down to Super Bowl LII between the Eagles and New England...
* Great skit on Saturday Night Live last night. Set in 1775 after the Battle of Bunker Hill, Patriots ..from New England...brag about their victory to a group of colonial leaders. They mention their captain..Thomas Brady..and boost about winning "five battles."
Interrupting the obnoxious group of Patriots, bursting thru the door are another group of colonalists- from Philadelphia. Dressed in colonial brown- and green-and led by real Philadelphian Tina Fey, they defend their city, after "crossing the Schuylkill River.'
Fey used her Philly accent to great effect, offering hoagies from Wawa. There were some good-natured shots at Eagle fans, punching horses and such. But the skit was mostly about how arrogant New England Patriots are. Funny stuff! Google it!
* Coach of the Year went to Rams' coach Sean McVeigh last night. Predictable. Los Angeles had a nice season, winning the NFC West. But they choked at home in the playoffs against Atlanta. Granted, the voting was tabulated before the playoffs. Mike Zimmer, head coach of Minnesota took second place. He had a nice year too, but the Vikings also blew it in the NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia.
The real disgrace is that Eagles' head coach Doug Pederson only got one vote. One. Tied with New England coach Bill Belichek. Pederson won 13 games during the regular season, led his squad to the No. 1 seed in the NFC, all without his MVP-caliber quarterback, Carson Wentz, out for the season after the Rams game.
Pederson and the Birds have been disrespected all year. Another chip on Doug's shoulder. Another snub for this bunch of underdogs.
The NFC looks foolish when the voting doesn't take in the playoffs too.
* As stated, Al Michaels is doing the Super Bowl. How appropriate. The same play-by-play guy who called the hockey Miracle on Ice" game in the 1980 Winter Olympics- USA vs. Russia. "Do you believe in miracles?..Yes!" Will he say something similar tonight when the Eagles finally capture their first-ever Super Bowl title?
Tomorrow I will have a wrap-up of the big game, including the commercials, the pre-game, half-time entertainment and all the festivities. Also during the week, win or lose, we will assess the entire Eagles's season.
Let's hope for a championship tonight. Hard to believe, either way, the season is over after tonight. No more football until training camp in the heat of summer. Seems so far away. But lots will occur til then, and until opening day in September.
After the celebrations are over ( well, they never really will be over..maybe settle down)comes the draft in April, the release of next year's schedule, OTAs, free agent signings and trades, and more Eagles talk on the radio. Will Wentz be ready in September/ Will Howie Rossman trade Foles, his value never higher?
A storybook, magical season, one so surprising, unexpected and fun, with so many life-long memories, ends tonight. What begins tonight is a whole new chapter in Eagles' history and Philly sports.
