PHILLIES FACTS AND TRIVIA

Football season is over. Spring training is just around the corner. Starting today, going hand-in-hand with Eagles Facts and Trivia comes...Phillies  Facts and Trivia. Every day we will post a Phillies trivia question- some harder than others- and a fact. Hope all the baseball fans out there enjoy!

Who is the Phillies' all-time leader in saves?

Answer: Jonathan Papelbon saved 123 games for the Phillies, passing Jose Mesa for the most in club history.

Papelbon also has the most saves in Red Sox history ( 219), making him one of two pitchers in baseball history to lead two franchises in saves ( Robb Nen is the other). His 368 career saves rank him ninth on the all-time MLB saves list.

Papelbon facts:

After seven years in Boston, Papelbon  became a free agent in 2012 and he cashed in with a four-year, $50 million deal with the Phillies. It was the richest contract ever for a reliever.

Papelbon had a 2.31 ERA to go along with his 123 saves. The Phils failed to finish above .500 in any of his four seasons in Philadelphia, which didn't make the temperamental Pap a happy camper.

After repeated verbal battles with the fans and media, Papelbon was eventually traded during the 2015 season to the Washington Nationals, who also quickly discovered just how disruptive a force Papelbon could be, including a dugout brawl with star outfield Bryce Harper.

The Phillies had the last laugh in the Papelbon saga. In nine games against the Phils after the trade, he blew saves in two of four opportunities and allowed 10 runs ( seven earned) in 8 2/3 innings for a 7.27 ERA against his former mates.

Papelbon was released during the 2016 season and never pitched in the majors gain.
