PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES,FLYERS

* The Phillies got off to a good start, beating the University of Tampa yesterday, 6-0 They open Grapefruit League play today, facing the blue Jays.

The forgotten Tommy Joseph had a first inning ringing double. He is a player without a position, a guy who has hit 20-plus home runs the last two seasons, but remains on the inside-out after the team signed free agent first baseman Carlos Santana.

The best hope for Joseph is to have a great spring so a team in need of a slugging  first sacker  will trade for him. Otherwise Joseph  will be riding the bench a lot this summer, pinch-hitting from time-to-time. No way he's gonna play much with Santana around. Santana gets on base along with his power. Plus the Phils need to justify his signing. Sadly, Joseph only plays first, so his options are limited.

* See where the NY Yankees are calling themselves "underdogs" ( even though they are favorites to win AL East).Worse, their ad campaign has Yankee players wearing dog masks!  Pathetic rip-off of our Birds.

Both the Sixers and Flyers won again last night. The 76ers won their sixth game in a row, beating the Bulls in Chicago while the Flyers defeated the Blue Jackets at home, 2-1.  Since the Super Bowl, both Philly winter teams are a combined 14-0-1.

Is the "Eagle Effect" real? Or is it just coincidence? Confidence and energy are keys. The other teams see the positive energy from the Eagles and the fans and they want it too.

Ok, I get it that just because the Birds won the world championship that has no bearing on the flyers trading for  a new goalie or the Sixers' schedule getting softer. But everyone feels good. Everyone is on a high. The teams feel nothing is impossible now. They see the fame and glory in winning a championship. Why not us?
