Garry Maddox and Tim McCarver both had fine careers, but there was one play that might have suggested otherwise. The game was in Pittsburgh and the date was July 4, 1976- America's 200th birthday.
With the bases loaded. McCarver hit a ball that traveled over the fence. Balls that land over fences are considered home runs and they are labeled grand slams when three men are on base. Not this time. In his jubilation, McCarver passed Maddox between first and second base. That is illegal, McCarver was ruled out, and it negated the home run. He was still credited with three RBIs... and a major-league blunder.
