This is from Disability Scoop..
In 2012, George Hodgins- a California adult with autism- was the victim of a murder-suicide carried out by his mother.
"People didn't really talk in the aftermath of the murder about who George was as a person," said Zoe Gross, the director of operations at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. :A lot of the news coverage just focused on people saying he was difficult to have around or he was described as high-maintenance, in just a really insulting and dismissive way to talk about a murder victim.'
Gross decided to organize a candlelight vigil, in memory of Hodgins and all people with disabilities who had been murdered by their relatives, and started the annual National Disability Day of Mourning to commemorate victims on March 1.
Fifty communities from San Francisco to Washington, DC, and as far as Canada and Australia will convene on March 1 to hold vigils of their own and memorialize people with disabilities who've been murdered by their caregivers.
The Autistic Self Advocacy Network has worked to compile a list of names of victims, which are read aloud at the vigils. While Gross acknowledges the list is incomplete, it includes more than a thousand names, about 150 of whom were killed within the last year.
"I think it's very important that the list of people be memorialized because there may not have been a time when a community got together to mourn people and to say it was wrong that they were killed and that their lives mattered,' said Gross, who received a White House Champions of Change award for her work in 2013.
When the murders of people with disabilities are covered in the media, they are often covered irresponsibly, Gross said, showing empathy for the murderer instead of the victim.
"As disabled people, that's really difficult to see," Gross said. "It's just thrown in your face what society thinks of you and what your life is worth."
Blair Chisholm, a senior at the University of Maryland, is organizing Maryland 's first vigil to observe the National Disability Day of Mourning this year.
The College Park vigil will feature several speakers and Chisholm will host a discussion after the list of names is read.
"It's really to raise awareness and also to have a space for the community to process their grief and anger about the issue,' Chisholm said.
The general public often isn't aware that people with disabilities can be targeted with violence, which is why Chisholm believes the event is important to observe.
"A lot of the victims were either institutionalized or they didn't leave their home often a tall, so it's cases that are not well known," she said.
Gross said the issue is more prevalent than people think- the Autistic Self Advocacy Network is adding hundreds of names to its list of victims each year, she said.
'At the end of the day, I'm still doing it for the victims whose names are on the list because they had everything taken away from them and in death they continued to be treated unfairly and discriminated against,' she said.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES, EAGLES, SIXERS
* The Phillies lost yesterday afternoon, 11-6, to the Tigers. Philly spotted Detroit an 8-0 lead before rallying behind Rhys Hoskins' first homer run of the spring, and a blast from Roman Quinn. Once again the pitching let the team down, and pitching remains the weak link on the club.
Tommy Joseph continues his hot spring training, going 2-2 with a double. If he doesn't stay on the team at least he is increasing his trade value. Joseph has been playing the outfield as well. It's possible he could stick with the Phils, as an extra first baseman/outfield and power off the bench.
It looks like Manager Kapler will use the flexibility in his team and mix and match all season. Kingery has played shortstop; Hernandez can play short; Franco has played first; Santana can play third and catcher; Quinn can be an extra outfield with his speed; even Knapp can play first, along with Alfaro.
A bench that features Joseph, Quinn and either Alterr or Williams, is a strong bench, loaded with speed and power.
* As spring training moves into it's second full week, teams continue to wait our free agents such as Jake Arrieta. Pretty soon Arrieta and his agent, Scoot Boras, have to cave in if Arrieta wants to pitch this season. He will have to take a 3 or 4-year deal somewhere, for more money, which is what the Phillies want. They have the cash to outbid anyone else, but they don't want to give too many years.
* The late Roy Halliday and executive Pat Gillick will be inducted onto the Phillies Wall of Fame in August. Both are well deserving. Doc wasn't with the organization for long, but in the short time with the Phils, he pitched two no-hitters, including a perfect game. Shame the team didn't make the World Series in 2011 when Doc was at the top of his game.
After this year, expect the stars of the 2008 world championship team to start to enter the wall. Rollins, Howard, Ruiz, Utley, Hamels and Lidge are all candidates to receive the honor in years to come.

* Punter Donnie Jones announced his retirement. Jones, after five years with the Eagles and 14 seasons in the NFL, is going out on top. Jones will be missed, especially his kicks inside the 20-yard-line. Cameron Johnston, an Australian kicker, who challenged Jones last summer in training camp, looks to be the favorite to win the punting job.
* Chris Long posted a picture yesterday on social media after successfully climbing Africa's highest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro, with a group of NFL players and friends. Long is a great role model, both on and off the field. The Birds should seek to resign him on the defensive line.
* If the Eagles stay at No. 32 in the upcoming draft, middle linebacker, depth on offensive and defensive line, safety and wide receiver should be considered. Wide out is the sexy position of choice, and two speedy receivers, who can also double as kick returners, Christian Kirk from Texas A&M, and James Washington from Oklahoma State, could be available when the Birds pick Both would also be targets for Dallas, which can also use fast receivers ( especially since Dez Bryant seems to be waning).

The Sixers blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter last night and lost to Miami. That makes two losses in a row. more troubling, players claimed they weren't "into" the game last night. How can you not be motivated, especially with playoff seeding on the line? If that's true, it's not a good reflection on Coach Brett Brown.

The First Miracle on Ice
On the final day of the 1960 Squaw Valley, California, Winter Olympics, the United States defeated Czechoslovakia, 9-4, in the championship hockey game.
Six goals in the third period earned the U.S. its first hockey gold medal against great odds. The U.S. squad had already gotten by the Soviet Union's defending gold-medal team and six-time Olympic-champion Canada to reach the final. (February 28, 1960).

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, FOOTBALL
* The Phillies lost again to the Yankess last night, 4-3. The bright spot was Scott Kingery, who went 3-3 with a game-tying homer in the ninth inning.
Kingery will probably start the season at Lehigh Valley until the club figures out what to do with second baseman Cesar Hernandez, or decide to make Kingery a Ben Zobrist-like super utility man. Plus Kingery needs to go down because of service time. After May 1 the Pihls will have control for an extra year and can then bring Kingery to Philadelphia.
Kingery has power, speed, plays excellent defense and can hit. He is a potential All-Star for years to come, whereas you pretty much know what you have in Hernandez. A good, solid player but nothing special. Who would he want for the long-term?
"Jet-pac" is the high-energy guy that new manager Kapler loves. Kingery can play leadoff, but I can easily see him hit second or even third in the lineup. He reminds me of a young Ryne Sandberg, only faster.
* The Phils play in Clearwater this afternoon, facing the Tigers.
* Did 6abc sports guy Jeff Skversky really ask Aaron Nola "Are you a superstar?" Is there any answer for such a stupid question? Skversky is among the worst, right up there with Mike Sielski and Marc Farzetta in the city. Totally clueless.
**********************************************************************
The Flyers are smoking-hot, now in first place of the Metropolitian division after beating Montreal last night, 1-0, in a shoot-out. They also picked up veteran defense man Johnny Oduya from the Senators. The new goalie is playing great, as is the defense, especially Ghost. They have confidence, and, even without Wayne Simmonds, they continue to roll.
*********************************************************************
* Dallas owner Jerry Jones is getting exactly what he deserves. The league fined him $ 2 million to pay court costs from all his stupid legal issues last season. Life must suck in cowboy country now. First the Cowboys failed to make the playoffs. Second, the Eagles win the Super Bowl. Now ego-maniac Jones gets his.
Later in the spring Dallas hosts the NFL draft. That can't go well, especially in comparison to the success in Philly last year when the city hosted the draft. Won't it be nice when someone form the Birds' family, maybe Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins, strolls to the podium in April and announces: "With the 32nd pick in the first round of the NFL draft, the world champion Philadelphia Eagles select...."
Will it even matter?
* For the last time, if the Eagles don't trade QB Nick Foles before or at the draft ( I doubt they will-they aren't sure of Carson Wentz' health to take that risk)they won't trade him. No trade before the season starts, like Sam Bradford. No mid-season deal. They will simply let Foles play out his contract, then seek to sign him after the 2018 or let him walk.
Why should Foles sign an extension during the season when he is so close to hitting the free agent market? Why should the Birds sign a back-up to starter money when they are already cap-strapped? They like third-stringer Nate Sudfeld, so if Foles does bolt after the 2018 season, the Eagles seem OK with that, knowing Wentz is healthy.
Foles' value will never, ever be higher then it is now. The Eagles would want draft picks for this spring, not for 2019, especially since they lack picks in the second and third rounds. Buffalo has multiple early picks. Arizona has the No. 15 overall selection. They picks are out there from teams that need a quarterback. but would they surrender those picks? Would the Birds forego the insurance of Foles without knowing the status of Wentz before the season starts?
Unless it's a financial issue, or unless the team is overwhelmed by a trade offer there's no way Foles is leaving.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS
* Phillies lost to those underdog New York Yankees yesterday in Clearwater 8-3. Too many strikeouts ( 12), poor baaserunning ( pick-off and Dylan Cozens sliding off an attempted stolen base), and bad fielding ( Franco lost fly ball in sun). Otherwise they looked great.
Kapler needs to stress fundamentals. It's early in camp and I'm sure they will iron out the kinks. The fielding and base-running goofs can be erased. The strikeouts worry me most. It's been an on-going problem for years and has cost numerous batting coaches their job. For guys like Franco and Rupp, it may be their last chance with the club. Putting the ball in play more would help.
* Aaron Nola had a bit of a rough outing yesterday, but that didn't stop Kapler from naming him as the Opening Day starter in Atlanta. For now. If the Phils do end up signing free agent Jake Arrieta Kapler may take back that honor.
Nola deserves it. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year He needs to have a break-out season. Who else can be the Opening Day start if not Nola?
Speaking of Nola, TV caught him signing autographs after his stint yesterday afternoon. Yet he refused to sign at Photo Night last summer? Go figure.
* Lehigh Valley should have another good team this season. Cozens and Scott Kingery seem destined to start the year with the Iron Pigs. Hopefully Kingery will be in Philly after may 1. The Phils have him playing at shortstop and taking fly balls in the outfield and grounders a tthird. If they keep Cesar Hernandez, Kingery may be their Ben Zobrist-like utility guy who plays everyday but at different positions.
Cozens can run like a deer, has a cannon for an arm, and mashes titanic home runs. He strikeout way too much. But he has another monster season in the minors how can the organization not consider him for the future as a Aaron Judge-like hitter? His personality and demeanor also need maturing, according to reports. He's too good to give up on, but I'm afraid that GM Klentak just include him in a package trade somewhere down the road, especially since the Phils are overflowing with young outfielders right now.
***************************************************************************
* The Sixers snapped their seven-game winning streak big-time on Sunday, getting trounced in Washington. Joel Embiid continues to play well, and play period, another back-to-back games success.Hopefully those days of not playing consecutive days is over.
* Rumors are swirling that LeBron James is considering coming to the 76ers as a free agent this summer. Reports are that he has been checking out schools in the suburbs for his kids. Would you want LeBron on the Sixers?
Sure, if it helps bring us a championship Isn't that the goal?
I know that James is a front-runner and a diva. But it would be the perfect situation for him and for younger stars like Embiid and Ben Simmons to learn how to win from a champion like James.
Those Sam Hinkie devotees who still chant "Trust The Process" aren't thrilled with the idea because he's not part of the Hinkie legacy. The Hinkie dopes would still rather kick the can down the road nd stock-up on draft picks, then actually win.
The Sixers should make the playoffs this season and may even win a round or two. Excitement is back at the Wells Fargo Center. With Embiid's winning and fun personality, imagine the excitement if the team actually got to the NBA Finals, let's say, facing Golden State. If it takes LeBron to help the cause sooner than later, why not go for it?

PHILLIES FACTS AND TRIVIA
Today's quiz- What was the Phillies postseason record in 2008?
Answer: The Phillies were 11-3 in the 2008 postseason.
* 2008 postseason Phillies facts:
- The Phillies won the first game of every playoff series and never trailed in a series once.. In fact, when the Phillies lost to the Yankees in the 2009 World Series, it was the first time they had trailed in a playoff series in two seasons- they were 18-5 in five series at that point.
- In 2008 the Phils' 92 wins were second best to the Cubs in the national League and a total of four teams had a better record.
- The Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2008 NLDS, defeating the brew Crew 3 games to 1. It was their first playoff series victory since 1993. Shane Victorino's grand slam in Game Two off C. C. Sabathia was the highlight of the series.
- They played the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, and crushed them, 4 games to 1, to advance to the World Series. Matt Stair's eighth-inning home run in Game four in LA will always be remembered as the magical moment in that series.
- The Phillies went on to win their second world championship by beating the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays, 4 games to 1. A rain-delayed clinching Game Five- including Pat Burrell's game-winning seventh-inning double, highlighted a game that took several days to finish.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS
* The Phillies won their Clearwater home opener yesterday after noon in warm, sunny Florida, beating Baltimore 9-6.
* Starting pitcher Zak Eflin looked sharp, going two inning. Eflin's key this season is to stay health and use his sinkerball to induce ground balls. His fastball isn't good enough to blow hitters away, but he's got good action on his sinker, which plays huge in cozy Citizens Bank Park. His past outstanding outings at Dodger Stadium, in Pittsburgh and up at Citi Field against the Mets shows he's got what it takes to grab one of the open spots in the rotation this spring.
On the other hand, Jake Thompson struck out three in his inning of work but still labored. control is his big issue. Thompson is lumped into the group of average-looking prospects like Pivetta, Eikhoff, Eflin, Lively, Eflin, Leiter Jr. and Velasquez to name a few. Some one needs to step up and take the bull by the horns. With jobs open, this is a great time to separate who wants it bad enough and who doesn't.
* Questions abound:
- Will Santana hit lead off? Hoskins second? Judge hit second last summer for the Yankees.
- When will Kingery play in Philly?
- Who wins back-up catcher- Rupp or Knapp?
- Will Altherr and Williams platoon in OF?
- Will Phillies sign free agent pitcher?
* The Phils host the underdog Yankees today in Clearwater. Will Stanton and/or Judge play for New York?

Amazing! Since the Super Bowl, our two winter teams have gone an incredible 16-0-1. Ok, maybe the Flyers have been the best team in hockey since December 1. And maybe the red-hot Sixers are playing easier opponents. Still, I disagree with guys like Mike Sieski and Kevin Cooney, know-nothing writers who have been wrong before, who say this winning momentum has absolutely nothing to do with the eagles winning a world championship.
The players, coaches, owners and fans have taken a "why not us" mentality to sports in Philadelphia, now that the birds proved that the impossible can happen.
Both the Flyers and 76ers are young teams finally coming into their own. They will each make the playoffs and may even win a round or two. I don't believe this is merely a coincidence of luck and winning. It's a matter of confidence and enthusiasm. The city professional sports teams have both now. It's a new era in Philly sports. A new day has dawned since February 4. No looking back now. Savor and enjoy it- it's gonna be a long , fun ride!
* Questions abound:
****************************************************************************

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES
* The Phillies lost their Grapefruit opener Friday afternoon, losing 2-1 to Toronto.Nick Williams went 2-for-2 Nick Pivetta gave up both runs in the firs tinning, including a led-off home run to Curtis Granderson.
The real stories were in camp before the game. New manager Gabe Kapler continues to be different. He has music blaring during batting practice and work-outs, feeling that music is big for the positive attitude and motivation. Whatever is upbeat ids played, and the players can make suggestions to the playlist. Listen for it this year during batting practice at Citizens Bank Park.
Owner John Middleton spoke recently, the last interview with reporter Jim Salsbury. I hope Middleton puts his vast wealth where his mouth is, as he seems all excited since the Eagles and his friend, Jeffrey Lurie, won the Super Bowl.
Middleton is openly talked about the Phillies making the playoffs- this season- by winning a wild card spot. He said he will "push" GM Klentak to find a starting pitcher, either now (Jake Arrieta?) or before the trade deadline in July if the team is in contention.
His excitement makes me excited for the summer and beyond. Kapler's positive attitude and the Eagles' winning momentum and the "why not us" mentality seems to be getting to Middleton. He sounded giddy in his enthusiasm to win and keep the championship jibes going in the city.
That;s great news. After Ruban Amaro and his always-measured conservativeness, after Ryne Sandberg and his boring monotone, and Pete Mackanin and his "strive to be average" philosophy, this "can do", refreshing encouragement and resolve has to get fans pumped.
Let's see soon how serious Middleton and crew are, as the Phils need a veteran starter or two before spring training wraps.

Interesting...Sixers coach Brett Brown is thinking playoffs. It seems certain the 76ers will get into the postseason, currently riding a six-game winning streak and having the easiest remaining schedule in the NBA.
Brown recently talked about how different the playoffs are form the regular season. The game is faster and more intense. Winning 4 of 7 games against the same team. The difference in travel.
Since the Sixers will be new to all of this postseason stuff, Brown feels he will need to ease the club into the learning experience. Getting a top four seed will help,as that means getting home court advantage, where the Sixers have won 11 home games in a row.
With Embiid and Simmons playing well, the last 27 regular season games and the playoffs will be must-see.

On the Steve Trevelise show overnight,I had to give kudos to Eagles wide-out Alshon Jeffery. He just has surgery this week to repair a torn rotary-cuff injury. He hurt his shoulder way back in training camp last summer and played the entire season and playoffs- including making great catches in the Super Bowl - all with a painful ailing shoulder.
Guys are sometimes out with nagging, small injuries. To see a guy bite the bullet, not miss a single game, and play thru pain-all season- is a tribute to Jeffery and his guts. He is now a legend in Philadelphia, another piece to a magical year when the Birds overcame adversity and won their first-ever Super Bowl championship.

PHILLIES FACTS AND TRIVIA
Today's quiz- What Phillie pitcher lost the most games in a Phillies uniform?
Answer: Robin Roberts ( 199) losses.
* Interesting Phillies story-
Garry Maddox and Tim McCarver both had fine careers, but there was one play that might have suggested otherwise. The game was in Pittsburgh and the date was July 4, 1976- America's 200th birthday.
With the bases loaded. McCarver hit a ball that traveled over the fence. Balls that land over fences are considered home runs and they are labeled grand slams when three men are on base. Not this time. In his jubilation, McCarver passed Maddox between first and second base. That is illegal, McCarver was ruled out, and it negated the home run. He was still credited with three RBIs... and a major-league blunder.

#3 Car Wins Daytona!
20-year Anniversary
"The years of disappointment, the close calls- all the chapters have been written. now the 20th chapter is in. To win this race is something you can't, I mean, you really can't put into words. You can talk about it all day, but you can't put into words the feelings you have inside.
"It's everything you've ever worked hard to do, and you've finally accomplished it. It's just pretty damn impressive, especially with everything we've done here in the past and all the shortcomings we've had in this race."

IN MY LIFE- HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE HARRISON!
Thinking of George Harrison on this, his birthday weekend . Tomorrow he would've been 75-years-old.
The quiet Beatle, he was honest, had common sense, spiritual, an amazing musician and underrated songwriter. Imagine being near two of the greatest songwriters in history- Lennon and McCartney. But even Paul said in Beatles Anthology how George grew as a songwriter, penning classics like "Something", "While my Guitar Gently Weeps", and my favorite, 'Here Comes The Sun.'
George was the peacemaker in the Beatles. During the Let It Be sessions, when Paul and John was at odds, and Ringo was moody, George stayed the solid, calm, stable one, even when Paul tried to take control by telling George how to play certain guitar riffs .
In Beatles Anthology, interviewing the three remaining Beatles, where did they meet? At George's house. Jamming in his home studio, laying on the grass in his backyard ( while George strums a ukulele)and my favorite scenes- the three Beatles sitting around George's kitchen table, shooting the breeze and reminding. George's eyes light up when he remembers meeting Elvis again in Las Vegas, Elvis wearing all white and looking like a God. "When Elvis was good, " George said, "He was so good!"
George loved to explore music, and his love for Indian music led to the popularity in our culture for the sitar.
R.I.P. George.

IN THE NEWS- DISABILITY OR DISABLED- WHICH TERM IS RIGHT?
Interesting piece from Disability World, about differences and similarities and disabled terminology, including the right terms to use.
A disability is defined as a condition or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual or group. The term is used to refer to individual functioning, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment, mental illness, and various types of chronic illnesses.
Disability and Disabled are both words that generally describe functional limitations that affect one or more of the major life activities, including walking, lifting, learning, breathing, etc. Different laws define disability differently. "Disability" and 'Disabled" are terms that are undergoing change due to the disability rights movement both in the U.S. and U.K. To a lesser extent this is occurring worldwide.
To most people today the term "disabled" still means "unable to perform" this or that physical or mental function.
Beginning in the 1970s, people labeled as "disabled" ( Either because they fell under the Social Security definition or because they had some sort of injury or condition considered a "disability") began seeking changes in society that would allow them to have a better life. Since the 1980s, this effort has generally been termed "disability rights" advocacy or "disability rights activism."The correct term is Disability Rights."
Calling a person disabled- not THE disabled but a disabled person is almost always considered correct.
Another term that grew in popularity during the first part of the 20th Century was "handicapped." The term comes from sports; handicapping means assigned some extra burden or weight.
Back to the birth of today's disability rights movement: budding activists did not like having been "defined" by the social service system, basically rebelled against the term 'handicapped" simply because it had been assigned to them by others, and, in choosing a new term, chose "disabled."So, activists in the u.S. began using "disabled."
Then a movement came along to change the wording to "people first language"- so, it was argued, use the term "people with disabilities.' Britain's disability rights theorists and disability studies leaders reject that, and stick with 'disabled person." Currently in the U.S. activists seem divided.
Many people still use "handicapped" or "crippled" or "afflicted."
None of these terms is looked upon by anyone in the U.S. or U.K. disability rights movement. "Handicapped" is truly detested in U.K. circles. Handicapped is offensive- it's a limiting term."Challenged" is just sugar coating, as is "impaired' or any other word that attempts to dance around the subject.
A physically disabled person is physically disabled. In this context, it is appropriate to use mobility impaired to signify the person's limitations.
There are some words, three especially, that have been rejected nearly universally- 'retardation" and any derivative like retard or retarded; "cripple' and "spaz.'
In summary, the terms "Disabled" and "Disability" seem safe and appropriate- at least for now.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES,FLYERS
* The Phillies got off to a good start, beating the University of Tampa yesterday, 6-0 They open Grapefruit League play today, facing the blue Jays.
The forgotten Tommy Joseph had a first inning ringing double. He is a player without a position, a guy who has hit 20-plus home runs the last two seasons, but remains on the inside-out after the team signed free agent first baseman Carlos Santana.
The best hope for Joseph is to have a great spring so a team in need of a slugging first sacker will trade for him. Otherwise Joseph will be riding the bench a lot this summer, pinch-hitting from time-to-time. No way he's gonna play much with Santana around. Santana gets on base along with his power. Plus the Phils need to justify his signing. Sadly, Joseph only plays first, so his options are limited.
**********************************************************************
* See where the NY Yankees are calling themselves "underdogs" ( even though they are favorites to win AL East).Worse, their ad campaign has Yankee players wearing dog masks! Pathetic rip-off of our Birds.
**********************************************************************
Both the Sixers and Flyers won again last night. The 76ers won their sixth game in a row, beating the Bulls in Chicago while the Flyers defeated the Blue Jackets at home, 2-1. Since the Super Bowl, both Philly winter teams are a combined 14-0-1.
Is the "Eagle Effect" real? Or is it just coincidence? Confidence and energy are keys. The other teams see the positive energy from the Eagles and the fans and they want it too.
Ok, I get it that just because the Birds won the world championship that has no bearing on the flyers trading for a new goalie or the Sixers' schedule getting softer. But everyone feels good. Everyone is on a high. The teams feel nothing is impossible now. They see the fame and glory in winning a championship. Why not us?

DeWayne "Tiny" Lund
Tiny Lund made his legend at Daytona in 1963 when he rescued fellow driver Marvin Panch from his burning car after a wreck in a practice session that left Panch trapped.
The owners of Panch's car, the Wood brothers, rewarded Lund by asking him to run their car in the event.
Lund went on to win the Daytona 500, the first victory of his career after starting in 131 races,
Tragically, Lund would die in a crash at Talladega in 1975, after winning five races in his 21-year career.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES
* Eagles' wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder yesterday. It was reported that Jeffery hurt his should last summer in training camp. he played the entire year with the painful injury.
Jeffery caught nine touchdowns during the season and make crucial catches in the playoffs and the Super Bowl. No one should ever question his guts or desire to win again.
As it turns out, the contract extension the Birds gave him during the season was well worthwhile. Jeffery becomes yet another symbol of an incredible Eagles season. They overcame adversity and injuries, fighting hard, often underdogs, bringing the first-ever Super Bowl championship to Philly.
Hopefully Jeffery will be healed for the start of the season. Reports are that he may miss time in this summers' training camp and pre-season games.

* Phillies owner John Middleton was interviewed recently and again stated his intense desire to win. Even more so now since the Eagles won a world championship. Hopefully he is the deciding voice when it comes to signing free agent pitcher Jake Arrieta.
Look at the current Phillies brain trust. Different personalities. Check it out:
- Manager Gape Kapler- Never managed major league baseball before. New ideas. Into physical fitness, working-out and taking care of your body. Full of positive energy. Seems to be aggressive . Analytical thinking. Will be interesting to see how he manages a game, and the different personalities on the team, starting with malcontents like Odubel Herrera and Maikel Franco.
- President Andy MacPhail- Old-school guy. Boring. Seems to be a slow-thinking, deliberate. Talking more about improvements to ballpark rather then improving players on field. Disappointed in his lack of aggressiveness since joining the organization.
- General Manager Matt Klentak- Another boring guy, like MacPhial. Inexperienced, like Kapler. Talks a lot but says nothing. Rarely makes trades, and when he does, usually gets back prospects in return instead of major league-ready players. Not aggressive enough, like last summer when he waited to bring up Rhys Hoskins and Nick Williams until he had no other choice.Very analytical. Hopefully showing signs of loosening up a bit, with the signing of free agent Carlos Santana.
-Owner John Middleton- Excited, voice of the fan. Billionaire, now getting more involved with team. Face of the owners to the public. Not concerned about his desire to win. The heat is on Middleton in the city, now that the Eagles have won big-time. Has the money to spend, from his own personal wealth, to TV money the club has sat on for the last few years, to the cash they have saved by not dipping into the free agent market recently.
So, you've got two really enthusiastic guys in Kapler and Middleton, and two prudent, slow-moving, analytical guys in MacPhail and Klentak. Who wins out? If Kapler doesn't show he can manage a baseball game he will be history soon enough. With that, Klentak will go, as his job hinges on Kapler's success. MacPhail is safe as team president, and thankfully, Middleton has the final word on everything.
As long as Middleton continues to be an enthusiastic, voice of the fan owner, who goes with his gut as much as listens to those under him, the Phillies' future will be bright. Unless he decides to sell his share of the team Middleton ain't going anywhere. Hopefully he learns from Birds' owner Jeffrey Lurie, hangs in there and does whatever it takes to bring a winner to Philly soon.

"Do you believe in miracles?"
On George Washington's Birthday, the U.S. hockey team outplayed the heavily favored Soviet Union in Olympic Games medal-round play.
Mike Eruzione's goal, with 10 minutes remaining, created the 4-3 difference that advanced the Americans into the championship game.
TV commentator Al Michaels answered himself: "...Yes!"
Two days later, coach Herb Brooks' team USA defeated Finland 4-2 for the gold medal. (Lake Placid, New York, February 22, 1980)

IN THE NEWS- BLOOD, URINE TESTS COULD CHANGE HOW AUTISM IS DIAGNOSED
This recent article is from Disability Scoop..
New research suggests that blood and urine tests could one day be used to diagnose autism, potentially offering a biomarker to identify children at younger ages.
Ina study published this week in the journal Molecular Autism, researchers said they have developed a first-of-its-kind test to spot damage to proteins in the blood that can distinguish those on the spectrum.
"Our discovery could lead to earlier diagnosis and intervention," said Naila Eabbani of the University of Warwick in England who led the study.
Currently, autism is diagnosed through clinical screening and evaluation. Though the developmental disorder can be accurately flagged in children as young as age 2, many are not diagnosed until after age 4, according to the U.S. centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Treatment is considered most successful the earlier it begins.
Researchers in the current study analyzed blood and urine samples from 38 children with autism and 31 typically-developing kids ages 5 to 12. They found chemical differences between the samples from the two groups and then used artificial intelligence to develop an algorithm to separate children with and without autism.
Those behind the small study are now looking to replicate their findings in more children and determine if the test can pick up on kids at the very early stages of autism.
This is not the only potential autism biomarker in the works. In 2015, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine reported high accuracy rates from a blood test they were working on in children as young as 12 months. And, that same year, another study showed saliva may hold promise in identifying children on the spectrum.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, EAGLES
* We will see if Phillies' new manager Gabe Kapler knows how to manage a baseball game. But his fresh, positive attitude and different, unorthodox methods have drawn interest form fans and the media. The Phils need all the attention they can get.
It should be a fun summer. What will happen when the team goes on a long winning or losing streak? How will Kapler react? What about when he has a disagreement with an umpire? Will he go crazy and kick dirt and throw stuff like Billy Martin did, or will he try to reason and schmooze with the ump?
Most of all, what will Kapler do when outfield Odubel Herrera fails to hustle? ( You know it will happen).
Kapler has baseball fans talking. That's quite an accomplishment since the Eagles just won the Super bowl several weeks ago. It's been all-Eagles all the time. Even though both the Flyers and Sixers have lost only one game combined since the Eagles won the championship, the headlines continue to be about "The Philly Special" and Nick Foles' future.
So, it's great for the Phils that there is interest, even as spring training starts. Winning, getting off to a fast start will keep the positive momentum going. Kapler thinks the Phillies can contend right thru September. Who knows? Winning is contagious and the Phillies may just feed off the rest of the sports teams in Philadelphia and surprise everyone.
************************************************************************
* The Flyers won again last night, beating Montreal in overtime, 3-2. Alex Lyon played well in goal.
The Orange and Black are close to both Pittsburgh and Washington for the top spot in their division. Making the playoffs seems assured now, but let's see how new goalie Petr Mrazek plays. Plus, Wayne Simmonds will be out several weeks with a reported "upper body injury " ( sources say it's a broken finger).
The Flyers are starting to take on the characteristics of the Eagles. Next- man- up mentality, overcoming adversity, underdogs.
The Sixers continue play on Thursday against the Bulls in Chicago. They are riding a winning streak as well. Nice to see our winter teams playing so well and giving us hope of deep playoff runs by both in the spring.
Think about the spring: Flyers and Sixers in the playoffs, Phillies, under Kapler, sparking interest with young guys like Hoskins and Kingery. The Eagles in the NFL draft . The rumors about Foles and free agency. Add in the usual spring sports events, like the Masters, the Kentucky Derby, the Indy 500, the NBA draft, March Madness.
Great time to be a sports fan. My favorite time of the year.
**********************************************************************
* Yesterday the Birds named former wide receiver coach Mike Groh as their new offensive coordinator. Groh did wonders with the receivers, especially Agholor. Head coach Doug Pederson is still going to call the plays. Running backs coach Duce Staley will remain as RB coach but now has a new title of assistant head coach.
*Everyday there are new thoughts on the future of Nick Foles in Philly. I'm still thinking he will stay, at least until the Birds are sure that Carson Wentz is healed. GM Howie Rossman would have to be totally overwhelmed by any trade offer at draft time to let go of the insurance that Foles brings. True, the organization like QB Nate Sudfeld. And Pederson could do the same thing with Sudfeld as he did with Foles- game-plan to his strengths.
As I see it now, I don't think the Birds will extend the contract of Foles. That would mean investing too much money into a back-up quarterback. I don't think Foles would sign an extension, no matter how much he says he wants to stay in Philly. Why should he? He can test the market in a year and will be offered much more money on the free agency circuit. That is, unless he really doesn't care about money, but I'm sure his agent will have a say in that.
Foles can play out the remaining year on his Eagle contract ( unless he is traded), and the Birds can re-assess this time next year. If Foles is honest about his love for the city and the organization I'm sure he will give the Eagles a fair chance to re-sign him next spring.
*Combines start next week in Indianapolis. if the Birds stay at No. 32 in the first round, who will they pick/ Offensive line depth, middle linebacker and speedy receiver/running back/punt returner look to be positions of need.
So, my gut feeling is this: Foles will not be traded. The Eagles will keep him around, knowing that Wentz may not start the season. Foles is already under contract. The Eagles will not offer him an extension. If Wentz is shaky in his comeback the Birds can always extend Foles later. Otherwise, Foles will play out his final year and see what free agency holds in 2019, still a Super Bowl MVP QB. He will get his money and playing time either way, filling in for the injury-prone Wentz in Philly, or starting for another team for the next five years or so.
For Foles, it's a win-win situation. for Rossman, he holds all the cards and can't go wrong. Either he gets a good draft pick (s) back in a trade, or he gets another year of Foles, then turns to Sudfeld, whom he loves.

PHILLIES FACTS AND TRIVIA
Today's quiz- The record for RBIs in a game by a Phillies player is eight. Who was the last Phillies to knock in eight RBIs in a game?
Answer: Jayson Werth ( 2008)
Werth hit a solo home run, a three-run shot, and a grand slam, putting him one homer short of hitting for the home-run cycle on May 16, 2008 at Citizens Bank Park.
Werth had one more chance in the seventh inning, but with most of the 36.000 fans still standing and cheering during a blow-out game on a brisk night, he fouled out. "Hitting a home run was probably on my mind," Werth said.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES,FLYERS
* The Phillies' slogan this season is "Be Bold." New manager Gabe Kapler passed out t-shirts to the players on the first day of full-squad work-outs with the inscription of "Be Bold" emblazoned on the front.
I like Kapler's enthusiasm and positive energy. Far different from ex-manager Pete Mackanin's average declaration last spring training for the club to be .500. Maybe this young team needed a fresh, new outlook. Hopefully Kapler can actually manage a baseball game and run a team.
* Eagles center Jason Kelcie stopped by spring training and gave the Phillies a pep talk. Apparently there was more swearing in Florida by Kelcie than at the championship parade. Whatever works.
* Odubel Herrera entered camp with a new bushy beard, gold-tipped hair and to his credit, has started to speak English.
* It's reported that GM Klentak continues to talk to free agent pitcher Jake Arrieta's agent. Signing Arrieta would instantly make the Pihls wild card contenders this summer and prove the organization is serious about winning. It would also send a signal to other free agents down the road ( Manny Machado) to consider Philadelphia as a destination and as a team on the rise.
************************************************************************
The Flyers traded for Detroit Red Wings goalie Patr Mrazek last night. He is an average goalie at best, but the club had to do something with both Elliot and Nurwirth injured. Rookie Alex Lyon is their other active goalie on the roster.
Hopefully Mrazek can hold down the fort until Elliot returns. The Flyers are only four points off the top spot in their division.

Fergie's rendition of the National Anthem at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday was a disgrace. Even she apologized later.
When you try to make the Anthem all about you, the singer is in trouble. The general rule is, since the Anthem is a hard song to sing, is to keep it simple, sing it, and get out of there. No one is at the game to hear you sing a song. They are there for the event. So don't get in the way and make yourself the story, and ultimately embarrass yourself.

The Red Sox signed slugger J. D. Martinez yesterday to a five-year contract. Martinez had a torrid second half last summer with San Diego. He clubbed 45 homers last season/ Boston needs power, plus they needed to keep up with the Yankees, who traded for the powerful Giancarlo Stanton during the off-season.
Wouldn't surprise me if, between the two of them, the Sox and the Yanks combine to win close to 200 games this year. The Phillies play both this summer, and I've got tickets to see each when they invade Citizens Bank Park.

Today's quiz: Who was the last Phillie to turn an unassisted triple play?
Answer: Eric Bruntlett. The second baseman became the second Phillie to turn an unassisted triple play on August 23, 2009, against the Mets at Citi Field.
- Mickey Morandini turned the first unassisted triple play against the Pirates in 1992.
For the last "traditional;" triple play,it was done on August 8, 2016. Third baseman Maikel Franco fielded a sharp grounder, stepped on third base, and the Phils went around the horn for a 5-4-3 triple play.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS
* Full-squad workouts for the Phillies in spring training starting today. The only players not in camp so far are Cesar Hernandez and Odubel Herrera. The first Grapefruit League game is this Friday vs the Blue Jays.
With temperatures in the 70s this week it will feel like baseball weather .
I love WIP Sports Radio and the Eagles, but it's Eagles all the time on the station. I want to savor their world championship but not drown in it. WIP does have a Hot Stove show on Tuesday nights from 6-7 pm.
Seems like every show has an ex-Eagle on it- Hollis Thomas, Jon Ritchie, Tra Thomas, Ike Reese. Ben Davis used to be on with Angelo in the morning until he got a regular gig as a Phillies broadcaster. Why not hire Ricky Bottalico for a weekly show?
There's a weekly Sixers show on the radio. Why not a regular Phillies/Baseball program, especially during the season?
***************************************************************************
* Speaking of the Sixers, they resume play after the All-Star break on Thursday at Chicago. They are 30-25 so far, the No. 7 seed in the East. They will shatter Vegas' over/under win total of 42 wins . The schedule looks easier in the second half.
Joel Embiid made a good showing at the All-Star Game, scoring 19 points, 8 rebounds , and two blocks, one on Embiid-rival Russell Westbrook.
I wish they would go back to a East vs. West format. Too confusing knowing who plays for Team LeBron and Team Curry.
*************************************************************************
The Flyers scored seven goals yesterday afternoon, defeating the rangers in new York, 7-4. Rookie goalie Alex Lyon took over for an injured Michael Nurweirth late in the game and did well. Expect Lyon to get a lot of playing time now.
Claude Girioux scored his 200th career goal in the game.
The Flyers now have 70 points, only four points off the top spot in their conference. They are surging, and along with the 76ers, have only lost once- a shoot-out, since the Eagles won the Super bowl two weeks ago. Is winning contagious?

Today's quiz- Who registered the longest hitting streak in Phillies history?
Answer: Jimmy Rollins. 38 -games. He ended the 2005 season with a 36-game hitting streak and extended it to 38 games in 2006.
It was the eighth- longest hitting streak in major-league history and the longest since Paul Molitor hit safely in 39 consecutive games.
No player has reached Rollins' total since, although Chase Utley came close with a 35-game hitting streak later in that same season.

It was the eighth- longest hitting streak in major-league history and the longest since Paul Molitor hit safely in 39 consecutive games.
No player has reached Rollins' total since, although Chase Utley came close with a 35-game hitting streak later in that same season.

"Everybody tries to make a hero out of me over the Korean thing. I was no hero. There were maybe 75 pilots in our two squadrons and 99 percent of them did a better job than I did. But I liked flying. It was the second-best thing that ever happened to me. If I hadn't had baseball to come back to, I might have gone on as a Marine pilot."
- Ted Williams
On this date in 1953, 16 months after compiling the major's last .400 BA, Boston Red Sox and four-time American League batting champion Ted Williams escaped with his life after crash-landing his F-9 Marine Panther that was nearly shot down during a bombing run in Korea. Williams climbed from the cockpit shortly before the plane exploded.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS, SPORTS MUSEUM
* Hope DE Chris Long returns to the Eagles next season. He made key plays this year, and was a leader off the field. He and Lane Johnson brought the "underdog" theme to life. Long is a winner, having won a Super bowl the year before with new England. Hopefully he stays.
* Still on a high from the Birds' championship season.Baseball is just gearing up, and I've got my tickets for the summer. The Sixers and Flyers are strong candidates to make the playoffs. Still, can't get enough Eagles. Still see tons of Eagles' merchandise around,- Super Bowl caps, shirts, you name it.
I think the Philly fans will be basking in the bright sun of victory, at least until September when it happens over again.
* Free agency will be next on the agenda as the off-season is two weeks old. What will happen with the injured players, especially Darren Sproles and Jason Peters? And the big question about whether Nick Foles will be traded near the NFL draft.
* Even though two former Eagles will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this August, I'm glad the team won't be playing in the hall of Fame Game. The pre-season is long enough without playing an extra game.
Fans will be chomping at the bit as the regular season nears. Imagine the feeling as the opener - a Thursday night game at the Linc- finally arrives.
**************************************************************************
*The Phillies continue to work-out in Clearwater. The full camp reports tomorrow.
Interesting that new first baseman Carlos Santana is lockered next to Mychael Franco. Santana is a real pro, who knows how to work a pitcher and take a walk. In fact, he had more walks the last six year then any other batter in the American League. Hopefully Franco learns a little plate discipline from Santana. Franco may need a mentor at this point, He's still a young player and Santana seems to be a leader.
This probably is Franco's last chance with the Phils. Oriole Manny Machado will most likely be a free agent after the 2018 season. Whether Machado plays third or shortstop, if Franco doesn't produce this summer, he may get dealt.
* If one can take GM Matt Klentak at his word, looks like the game-plan for Phillies' pitching this year is to rely heavily on the bullpen. if they do sign a veteran pitcher or not, young hurlers abound, with Valasquez, Pivetta, Eflin, Thompson and Eichoff needing to step up.
So, the plan is to get five or six innings out of the starters, then let the bullpen finish the game. That's great, as long as the 'pun doesn't get burned out by summer. New manager Gabe Kapler will have his hands full there, and it will be interesting to see how the first-time skipper handles the staff.
* Vegas has made the Phillies' over/under win total at 76 1/2 games. I would take the over, especially if the team gets more pitching help. A .500 season shouldn't be out of reason. Vying for a wild card spot would make the summer very interesting. Getting off to a fats start would help and would create enthusiasm for Phillies' baseball.
************************************************************************
Between the Sixers and Flyers, they have only lost one game in the Eagles won the Super Bowl two weeks ago.The Flyers are playing the Rangers in New York as I blog. The 76ers are off for the All-Star break, having won five games in a row.
Both would make the playoffs if their respective seasons ended today.
*************************************************************************
* A big future attraction at the South Philly sports complex will be a new Sports Museum. It sounds like a cool idea, long overdue.
I can think of a few items that could go into the museum: the real Santa Claus suit from the Santa who was pelted with snowballs at a 60s Eagles' game; A pair of harry Kalas' white shoes, and Richie Ashburn's pipe.
Unique items would be cool. But I wouldn't mind see the basketball which scored Wilt Chamberlain's 100th point or the replca Liberty Bell from center field at the Vet.
I'm sure there will be old uniforms, actual seats from Connie Mack Stadium, The Spectrum and the Vet, as well as famous and historical baseballs, footballs and pucks.
If there is a virtual room, the suggestion was made to recreate the infamous Fog Bowl, so fans could relive what it was like for the Eagles and bears at Soldier Field during that playoff game.
They need sections to honor the great announcers and the old stadiums. Old-timers would love it and younger fans get a chance to experience things in the past which should never be forgotten.
It sounds like a wonderful experience for any sports fan, to relive special moments and share memories from generation- to- generation. Can't wait! The museum is scheduled to be completed sometime by next spring.
Any other suggestions for the new Philly Sports Museum?

PHILLIES FACTS AND TRIVIA
Today's quiz: Who holds the Phillies' single-season record for strikeouts by a pitcher?
Answer: Curt Schilling. He struck out 319 batters in 1997, topping Steve Carlton's previous record of 310.
Curt Schilling facts:
- Schilling pitched for nine seasons with the Phillies. He is tied for second in club history in opponents' batting average (.233); ranks fifth in strikeouts ( 1,554); seventh in wins ( 101), starts (226) and ninth in innings ( 1,659 1/3).
- Acquired on April 2, 1992 from the Houston Astros for pitcher Jason Grimsley.
- Named the 1993 NLCS MVP after pitching eight innings in both of his starts and posting a 1.69 ERA.
- Started the All-Star Game at Fenway Park in 1999.
- Traded to Arizona in 2000. Went 111-57 in the eight years after playing in Philadelphia, was a three-time All-Star, and won three championships.
- Final stats: Six-time All-Star, 216 career wins, 83 complete games, 20 shutouts, 3,261 innings, 3,116 strikeouts, and a 3.46 ERA.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
* Just finished listening to Phillies GM Matt Klentak on Howard Eskin's show. My God, what a long-winded, dry, boring guy! Pure torture.
He really said nothing, like usual.
Ever notice Klentak rarely makes trades? And when he does, he doesn't get major league-ready players in return. Instead he deals for prospects ( i.e. Freddie Galvis deal).
The talk was mostly about the weirdo manager and free agency. Of course, Klentak supported his analytic coach. He avoided the question of Jake Arietta. Instead scouts are checking out broken-down, cheap pitchers like Tim Linsecum.
Meanwhile, Tommy Joseph is still on the roster- a man without a position. There are logjams at catcher and the outfield. And who starts beyond Aaron Nola?
*****************************************************************************
* Angelo says the Eagles will trade Nick Foles. Eskin & Steve Trevelise disagree. Who will be right?
Either way, Foles will get his money. Either the Birds will extend his contract, if he really wants to stay in Philly, and if the Eagles really want him to stay, or Foles will walk after this season and get big-money on the free agent market. He would still be a hot commodity, a Super bowl MVP.
Arizona would be an interesting landing spot for Foles if he is dealt. They need a quarterback, Foles went to school in Arizona, and the Cardinals have the overall No. 15 pick in April's draft.
Would the agent advise Foles to not settle for holding a clipboard on the sidelines and play for free agent money ?
To me, Foles is a product of the system. Remember, Doug Pederson tailored the Eagle offense to Foles' strengths. Going to a team like the Browns, who don't have the weapons, would not be his advantage.
Foles has to remember that the grass wasn't greener in St. Louis or Kansas City. He is in a great situation in Philadelphia. Wentz is injury-prone, so you gotta figure that Foles will play at some point, probably even open the season if Wentz isn't ready to play.
Foles is making good money, and maybe the Birds would extend his deal, or at least kick in a bonus for what he has done. He is beloved by the fans, and the back-up QB is always the most popular guy on a football team.
For the Eagles, it makes sense to keep Foles, at least until they know Wentz' health status. But the draft is only in two months, when trading Foles at his maximum value would be the most advantageous. The Eagles have a first round pick, but zero picks in the second and third rounds.
This debate will go on for a long time, especially up to draft day.
* I saw a sign on the Pennsylvania Turnpike yesterday. A picture of a German Shepard dog head with the simple statement "Best in Show...the Philadelphia Eagles."
* Patriot QB Tom Brady still hasn't congratulated Foles for the Super Bowl victory. The sore loser avoided Foles at the end of Super Bowl LII by fleeing into the new England locker room while other players were milling around mid-field (Foles was asking "Where's Tom?").
No class. Even if Brady was stunned by the unexpected loss, he's had two weeks to call Foles and simply say "Well done." No call. Spoiled guy who can't take losing. Imagine how he will feel when he needs to retire. bitter guy, despite winning five world championships and numerous awards.
I wish the media would stop making excuses for Brady. Tell it like it is. He's a creep.

IN THE NEWS- HOUSE LAWMAKERS APPROVE CHANGES TO AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
This important piece is from disability Scoop..
Amid vocal protests from disability rights activists, the u.S. House of Representatives approved the ADA Education and Reform Act this week on a vote of 225 to 192.
Critics say the controversial legislation, also known as H.R. 620, would severely damage accessibility protections laid out in the 27-year-old landmark Americans with Disabilities Act. The vote was split mostly along party lines with a dozen Democrats joining nearly all House Republicans voting in favor of the bill.
the legislation would require people facing accessibility barriers at public businesses- whether that means a lack of wheelchair ramps, special parking or bathroom facilities- to provide written notice of their concerns. Businesses would have up to 60 days to respond and then an additional 60 days to begin improvements.
Proponents of the bill say frivolous lawsuits around ADA compliance have created significant problems for small businesses, but disability advocates say the language in the ADA Education and Reform Act would essentially allow businesses to take no action on accessibility until a complaint is filed.
On the House floor, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said the legislation amounts to a "virtual get out of free card" for any business that wants to avoid accessibility requirements. But Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., described situations in which small business owners were sued for posting the wrong shape of a sign, or for very minor infractions, creating a "a cottage industry" of costly lawsuits.
In the days leading up to the vote, disability advocates had been mobilizing to protest the legislation. At least 10 people with the disability rights group ADAPT were arrested this week by U.S. Capitol Police after demonstrating in the Capitol building.
This week, many protesters in wheelchairs chanted and shouted from the U.S. House gallery in the minutes leading up to the vote. Some were escorted out of the gallery, while lawmakers- including Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., who herself uses a wheelchair- looked on.
'This bill affects us tremendously," said Marilee Adamski-Smith, the national media chair for ADAPT. "We are worried it's going to push back disability rights 27 years, to before ADA protections were in place."
Currently, there is no companion bill in the U.S. Senate.

PHILLIES FACTS AND TRIVIA
Today's question: Name the last Phillie to hit for the cycle?
Answer: David Bell. June 28, 2004 against the Montreal Expos at Citizens Bank Park.
Bell was 3-for-3 with a single, a double, a home run and a walk entering the 7th inning. All he needed was a triple. Bell was not exactly a burner on the basepaths- he only tried to steal a base four times in his four years in Philadelphia- making a triple an especially tall task.
In the 7th inning, Bell slammed a ball to center field and legged out a three-bagger in his final at-bat to complete the cycle.
And how many triples did Bell have that season? Just that one.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES
* Angelo Cataldi made a compelling case this morning for why the Eagles will trade QB Nick Foles before the start of next season. He is positive that Foles has played his last game for the Birds. Why?
- The Eagles are about $10 million over the salary car. Trading Foles would free up $ 7 million.
- The Eagles love third-string quarterback Nate Sudfeld.
- The Birds don't have a second or third round draft pick this spring. Trading Foles should bring back at least a No. 1 pick.
- Foles may walk after next year when his contract is up. The Eagles wouldn't get anything, whereas now, Foles' value will never be higher now.
- After getting the rock star treatment on various talk shows since winning the Super bowl, Foles may be back-tracking on his stance of returning to back-up status and holding a clipboard for Carson Wentz on the sidelines.
I said before, it will be up to Foles if he stays or goes.Unless GM Howie Rossman is overwhelmed by a trade offer at the draft in April, I think Foles stays- at least until the Birds know for sure if Wentz is healthy to start the season. Foles would be a great insurance policy but I can see a QB controversy down the road, especially if Wentz doesn't play well.
Can the Eagles afford the luxury of keeping both Wentz and Foles, with both due for new contracts soon?Rossman loves draft picks, so the time is right to cash in for a back-up QB, especially when you've already got your franchise QB.
Would the fans go nuts if Foles is traded? Or would they accept the picks and return their love to Wentz?
You want to keep Foles through training camp but his worth will never be higher right now, and the draft is only in two months. What to do?
***************************************************************************
The Phillies are scouting former SF Giants ace Tim Linsecum. He won two Cy Young Awards in his day, but has had arm troubles the last few years and has drifted around baseball since.
Linsecum would be an OK # 5 starter but the Phils really need to sign Jake Arrieta to show me they are serious and not playing cheap with free agents again.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES,PHILLIES, SIXERS
* Now the national media is harping on the "Philly Special" play in the Super Bowl being illegal. But WR Alshon Jeffrey checked with a ref before the play to make sure the Eagles' formation was OK.
If the refs were wrong ( again) then too bad. Criticize the officials not the Birds. With all the cheating and illegal stuff New England has done in the past they got a taste of their own medicine.
The media are a bunch of sore losers because most so-called football experts got it wrong all year. The Eagles went 13-3 during the season yet were underdogs against the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs.
No respect. Vegas has made the Patriots the favorite to win the 2019 Super Bowl. Even the Vikings are more respected by the media and they were crushed by Philly in the NFC Championship Game.
It's OK. If the Eagles and the city of Philadelphia play the role of underdogs again next season- despite winning the Super Bowl- then whatever advantage we have trying to repeat as world champions, then so be it.
Now Jayson Kelce is being criticized for his famous speech at the parade rally. Most of it is coming form the elite loser New York media who think they are Philadelphia's big brother and now what's best for Philly fans.
Kelce was honest and blunt. Too bad if the rest of the country is pissed because they didn't win.
All of this criticism hopefully will motivate and inspire the Birds to win it all again and prove they were no fluke in 2017

Manager Gabe Kapler sure is different. He lifts weights with the players in spring training. He allows players to get up when they want and arrive at the ballpark when they feel like. Hopefully he is a disciplinarian when need be and not just one of the boys.
It will be an interesting summer at Citizens Bank Park. Kapler could either be a refreshing guy who does things in a new, modern, millennial way, or a nutcase who can't manage or handle a baseball team.GM Klentak is on the clock with this hire- firing an old-school guy like Pete Mackanin and hiring an inexperienced, analytical guru in Kapler.
I'm willing to give Kapler a chance. Aside form his goofy tactics and bodybuilder physique, I'll be watching to see how he does with baseball moves: double-switching, handling the pitching staff, platooning guys, things going on on the baseball diamond as well as the clubhouse.
The Phils needed something to gain some attention from Philly sports fans. Now, Klentak needs to add starting pitching to make the summer even more interesting.

The Sixers won their fifth game in a row and 11 consecutive games at home, coming back form a 24-point deficit to beat Miami last night. Joel Embiid sat out with a sore ankle. the team is off now for the all-star break, with Embiid's availability in the game in doubt.
I think he will play, as he did on Christmas Day against New York in Madison Square Garden. Embiid likes a show and to be on stage. That's part of his charm.

IN THE NEWS- DISABILITY NONPROFIT AMONG GROUPS TO RECEIVE BETSY DEVOS' SALARY
from Disability Scoop..
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will give away her entire salary from her first year on the job and some of the money is headed to a nonprofit serving those with disabilities.
DeVos will donate the entirety of her $199,700 in pay, according to Elizabeth Hill, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education.
The funds will be divided evenly among four groups: Special Olympics, which offers athletics for people with intellectual disabilities; Kids Hope USA, a faith-based monitoring program for at-risk kids; Vision to Learn, which provides free eye exams and glasses to students in low-income communities; and Dreams Soar, which works to help girls enter science, technology. engineering and math fields.
Hill did not elaborate on how or why the groups were selected, saying only that DeVos is making the donations "in her personal capacity."
"I don't have an update on when they will receive the money, but it should be soon," Hill said.
DeVos struggled to answer questions about special education during her confirmation hearing last year and has since had a strained relationship with disability advocates.
Tara Baker, Special Olympics' director of marketing and communications for North America, said the organization has a "verbal commitment" from DeVos for the donation.
"We do not have additional specifics at this time," Baker said. "Special Olympics appreciates the opportunity to continue (to) work with and educate Secretary DeVos and members of Congress to create more unified and inclusive schools in our country."

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
* ESPN.com put out 5 over/under win totals in baseball that they thought were "wrong."I wanted to touch on two-
- Washington Nationals 91 1/2 wins-
Interesting total by Vegas, especially since the Nats won 97 games in 2017, and practically return the entire team. Granted, the braves, Phillies and Mets should be better this summer. No run-away in the NL East for Washington. But the Nationals should still be the best team in the division, at least for one more season.
After 2018 Bryce Harper will probably bolt for the Cubs. So, it's the Nats' one last chance to make it to the National League Championship Series, let alone the World Series.
So, why only 91 1/2 wins? Is the rest of the division ( except for Miami) that much better?
I would say to take the over, but Vegas usually knows stuff, so be leery. Will 90 wins be enough to win the NL East?
- Miami Marlins 64 1/2 wins-
I would take the under here, as I envision the Fish to lose at least 100 games this year.
They gutted their offense after Derek Jeter and co. bought the team. Gone are Stanton, Ozuna, Gordon and Yelch. More to follow. The Marlins are tanking big-time. It seems like after Alex Fernandez was killed in a tragic boat accident several years ago this franchise started going downhill fast.
Miami could never quite get over the hump, even with their young stars, but I never expected them to clean house as they have. Maybe the prospects they got back in the deals will eventually pay off, but for this summer, I see Miami and Pittsburgh in a neck-and-neck battle to see who will be the worst team in baseball this season.
*************************************************************************
Will the Eagles win another championship before an other team in Philadelphia?
The Sixers still have a ways to go. They have their young core in place, with Embiid and Simmons. This summer will go a long way in telling how soon the Sixers will seriously contend for an NBA title. The team should have money to sign free agents, and with the Sixers surging in the standings, Philly may be vying with teams like the Lakers for the services of quality players.
We still don't know about No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz. A lot will also depend on Embiid's health. If all goes well I see the Sixers seriously contending for a championship in 3-5 years.
The Flyers also have a promising young nucleus of players. They are on the bubble to make the playoffs this year, and without goalie Brian Elliot for the next 5-6 weeks, the team needs to keep afloat.
Like the 76ers, I see the Flyers seriously contending in 3-5 years, especially when they finally have cap space to buy a few established veterans to put them over the hump.
As for the Phillies, they are in good shape-after this season. They have tons of money to spend, and players such as Manny Machado, Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw may be available. They also have a young group of players, such as Rhys Hoskins, Nick Williams and Aaron Nola, who should be the base for a bright future.
But I don't see the Phils seriously contending for a World Series until 2020 or so.
So, yes, I do think the Eagles will win another championship before any other team in the city. The Eagles are primed- with Carson Wentz- to make a deep playoff run this coming season and beyond. Injured players will join a championship group. Add in free agents and players through the draft and trades and the Birds should be ready for another Super Bowl run next fall.

PHILLIES FACTS AND TRIVIA
Today's quiz question- Which Phillies pitcher made the most All-Star starts?
Answer: Robin Roberts. He started five All-Star Games from 1950 to 1955 and is tied with Steve Carlton with seven selections to the midsummer classic. Roberts' teammate Curt Simmons started the 1952 game . making it six straight seasons that a Phillies pitcher started the All-Star game.
Roberts won 28 games in 1952 in the beginning of an awesome four-year run in which he led or tied for the league lead in wins, starts, complete games, and innings pitched.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES. PHILLIES. FLYERS
* Nick Foles was on Ellen yesterday. He tossed a football around, had the Lombardi trophy with him, and was honest and gracious as always He got the rock star treatment, and even had an extended standing ovation form the audience..He deserves his moment in the sun, as do all the Eagles who are hitting the talk show circuit since winning the Super Bowl.
You gotta wonder: after all the fame and adulteration, will Foles want more money and a chance to start, either in Philadlephia or elsewhere?
I don't think so. I think Foles will stay in Philly if he wants to, unless Howie Rossman gets a first round draft pick offer, or a similar trade he can't refuse. The Eagles don't have a second or third round pick this April, so supplementing their selections, especially while Foles' value is at its highest, would make sense.
But, if given the choice, I do believe that Foles would be happy going back to holding a clipboard for the next few years behind Carson Wentz.
Foles already is making good money. Family values seems more important to him. He loves Philadelphia and the Eagles organization, especially after spending time with St. Louis and Kansas City, where things didn't go as well.
He has already won a Super Bowl and was MVP of the game. You can't go much higher, unless you repeat as champs. Plus he has to know that he may have a decent shot to play again as the Eagles' quarterback sometime, with Wentz' history of getting hurt. And, if Foles never plays another down for Philly, he is the best insurance policy on the sidelines there is in the NFL.
He is 29-years-old and could certainly play for another ten years or so. But playing football doesn't seem like the end-all to Foles, who thought about retiring a few years ago.
He and Wentz seem to work well together and get along. They know a good thing when they see it, and with the core of the team being young, and key players hopefully returning form injury, the sky is the limit for next season and beyond.
So, I think, in the end, Foles will stay. At least through the summer to make sure Wentz is OK. Would a second round or third round pick be worth losing the best back-up QB in the league? I say no, but if offered a first rounder, the Birds need to listen and think hard. After all, Foles is what he is, I don't think at this late stage of the gate he is going to emerge as the next Joe Montana.
Be aware that the Eagles really like Nate Sudfeld too, the third -string QB. Trading Foles would also save money off the cap, which the Birds are about $10 million over right now. So anything is possible
This is all interesting stuff and food for thought. It will keep us talking Eagles right up to summer training camp and beyond.
* It's exciting to know that players like CB Sidney Jones should emerge next season. Jones was thought of as one of the best corners in the draft last spring. The Eagles took a chance and drafted him in the second round, even though he was still rehabbing from a devastating injury. He not only will add depth but should start, with the investment the Eagles have made in him.
Linebacker Jordan Hicks will return too. The Eagles still need to prioritize picking a middle linebacker somewhere in the draft. I also see the team giving Donnell Pumphrey another look, if he has recovered from his injury. Will Darrell Sproles return or retire? Will he have the same speed as before or will he lose a step? Pumphrey can be the fast, shifty speed back the birds missed when Sproles went down. Considering that the team moved up in the draft last year to select Pumphrey, it makes sense they wouldn't give up on him so soon.
Add in Jason Peters, Chris Maragos, along with Wentz, to a championship squad, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Eagles have another long run in the playoffs next season. I get it that it's tough to repeat as champs. You may not be as hungry after hitting the rubber chicken circuit. You may not train as hard. Other teams will be gunning for the Birds, who are no longer underdogs. The schedule should be much tougher. Everything went right for the Eagles this season ( aside form injuries), even in the Super bowl. The breaks may not go our way next time.
But I'm still surprised that an aging team like new England is favored to win the 2019 Super Bowl. It's all reputation, Tom Brady, etc Vegas was wrong this year, as were plenty of so-called football experts.
I'll take another season of Philly being disrespected, as long as we win. To me, the Eagles are not a one-year wonder. could they be the new New England of the NFL, always winning their division and always in championship contention?
***************************************************************************
The Phillies opened spring training in Clearwater, Fla. this morning as pitchers and catchers reported for duty. This new manager, Gabe Kapler, is a piece of work and will make an interesting story this summer. He is either going to be a refreshing breath of fresh air in the Phils' stale environment, or a total, Chip Kelly-like bust.
He does remind me a lot of Kelly, with his unusual methods of nutrition and training. He is also big-time into analytics, and he has zero experience at managing on the big league level. In that sense, he is the Donald Trump of baseball skippers.
The Phillies have to do something special to peak the interest of casual Philly fans. It's all Eagles all the time, and with the Sixers and Flyers making playoff pushes, and Villanova basketball striving for another national championship, the Phillies are near the bottom in fan interest about now.
You'll always have die-hard Phillies and baseball fans, who will go to the games and tune in on TV and radio no matter what. But catching the attention of that casual fan will be a challenge.
That's where Kapler comes in. With a young core of players, including Rhys Hoskins, Aaron Nola and soon-to-be Phil Scott Kingery, the team does have exciting players to build on , players fans can identify with, grow with and learn to love as time goes on. Sort of like the Utley- Rollins- Hamels years.
I still think GM Matt Klentak needs to do something soon to fuel the interest and make the team better. Who starts beyond Nola? Singing a free agent pitcher, like Jake Arrieta, or trading a package of Tommy Joseph, Cameron Rupp and Cesar Hernandez may bring you back pitching in return.
I know the Phillies time to really go for it will be after the 2018 season, when free agents like Manny Machado and Bryce Harper hit the market. But giving the fans hope now, giving them more to watch this summer, as well as improving the team - both now and for the future- is Klentak's job. It's not impossible to trade for pitching or sign an Arrieta or Alex Cobb ( owner John Middleton has already said he will do whatever it takes to make the Phillies a winner). So, no excuses form Klentak as the spring begins. Let's see some bold, yet sensible moves that will show fans the organization continues to be on the right path.
***************************************************************************
The Flyers could be in trouble, losing goalie Brian Elliot for the next 5-6 weeks with an abdominal injury. I don't trust goalie Michael Nurwirth, who has had chances before to assume the No. 1 netminder spot and has been mediocre at best. The Orange and Black snapped their four-game winning streak last night, losing to the New Jersey Devils in a shoot-out.
Can the Flyers come together, in the face of adversity, like the Eagles did? We will see if this hockey team has what it takes in the next few weeks.
You gotta wonder: after all the fame and adulteration, will Foles want more money and a chance to start, either in Philadlephia or elsewhere?

But giving the fans hope now, giving them more to watch this summer, as well as improving the team - both now and for the future- is Klentak's job. It's not impossible to trade for pitching or sign an Arrieta or Alex Cobb ( owner John Middleton has already said he will do whatever it takes to make the Phillies a winner). So, no excuses form Klentak as the spring begins. Let's see some bold, yet sensible moves that will show fans the organization continues to be on the right path.

IN THE NEWS- CHILDREN'S BOOKS HONORED FOR DISABILITY THEMES
This from Disability Scoop..
Three children's books are garnering major accolades for telling the stories of people with disabilities, receiving special honors alongside the famed Newbery and Caldecott Medals.
The American Library Association said recently it will give its Schneider Family Book Awards to new works focused on people with autism and hearing impairment.
Given annually, the awards recognize authors and illustrators for portraying the disability experience in three different categories- books for children up to age 8, those for ages 9 to 13 and titles aimed at teens.
Allen Say's picture book "Silent Days, Silent Dreams" about James Castle, an artist who has autism and is deaf, won in the youngest category.
Meanwhile, the Schneider winner for middle grades is Shari Green's "Macy McMillan and the Rainbow Goddess," which tells the story of an inter-generational friendship between a sixth grader and her neighbor as they learn to communicate through sign language and cookies.
In the teen category, the library association selected "You're Welcome, Universe" by Whitney Gardner about a graffiti artist who is deaf.
Each of the winners will receive $5,000 and a framed plaque at the library association's annual conference in New Orleans this June.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, SIXERS, PHILLIES
* The Lane Johnson feud with the Patriots' organization is stupid. Now former New England players are joining the fray. Who cares if Patriot players "don't have fun" while playing for New England. It's their loss. They have a different way of going about their business. I like Johnson, but sometimes he does and says dumb things.
Such as, he mentioned that he would "rather win only one Super bowl and have fun then win five Super Bowls and not have fun." Huh? Why can't you do both? Ask the Phillies about only winning one world championship during their run 10 or so years ago. That Phillies team won in 2008, lost to the Yankees in the World Series the following year, won a club record 102 games in 2011 but lost to St. Louis in the divisional round of the playoffs.
The Phillies should've won more than one world championship during their run. The Atlanta Braves won 14 consecutive National league East titles yet only one World series in the 90s. With three Hall of Fame starters on their staff- Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz- they should've won more world championships then they did.
Win, baby, win!
* Now Mike Pereria, former head of officials, is saying the 'Philly Special" play in the Super Bowl was illegal. But WR Alshon Jeffrey said he checked with an official before the key play and the ref was OK with the Eagles' formation. Ferrara has a podcast ( who doesn't?) and is looking for an audience.
Who cares? The play stands in history. Don't try to diminish what the Birds did. They earned the win over the Patriots. And, even if he was an illegal formation, so much the sweeter. After all the cheating new England has done over the years, they deserved to get a taste of their own medicine.
* Carson Wentz was on the WIP Morning Show today. What a mature, classy guy! The Eagles and their fans should feel blessed to have such a young leader. he is the future at quarterback for Philadelphia. Hopefully Foles stays with the team as a back-up ( I wouldn't trade him for anything less than a first rounder) but there should be no question that Wentz is the man at QB now and for the next 15 years or so for the Eagles.
* I thought the Birds were going to wear kelly green for one game this past season/ Wasn't Lurie on board with gradually mixing the kelly green with the midnight green and black uniforms?
Eagles' gear is still selling like hotcakes. It will be interesting in a few weeks if we see any Phillies' caps out there. Baseball season is upon us soon, yet it's still Eagles, Eagles, Eagles, and rightfully so. Our other sports teams are going to have to try like hell to grab our attention this year. The Flyers and Sixers still haven't lost a game since the Eagles won the Super Bowl. They may make the playoffs, and the Phils may have a surprising summer, but the character of this Eagles' team, and the way they won the championship, will not only live for the rest of this year, but forever.

* The Sixers won again last night, beating the awful Knicks and winning their 10th consecutive game at home. Guard T.J. McConnell scored the first triple-double of any 76er ever coming off the bench. They play tomorrow night at home again vs Miami. The momentum of winning is carrying over to our winter teams - the Flyers are on a streak as well-and hopefully the Phillies jump on the bandwagon this spring and get out to a strong start, making this summer interesting and fun.
* I doubt that No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz will play again this season. Shut him down and get him ready for the fall, as Embiid and Simmonds did. Hopefully Fultz doesn't turn out to be a bust. Boston's Jayson Tatum, the overall Mo. 3 pick in last June's NBA draft, looks like a stud. Did GM Danny Ainge and the Celtics outwit the Sixers' brain trust yet again?

Pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater tomorrow, but some guys are already at spring training, working out. Pitchers and catchers happen to be two of the more interesting topics as the Phillies head to Florida for six weeks. Who starts after Aaron Nola? Will GM Klentak add a veteran or two to the staff to bolster the rotation/ Does Jake Arrieta fit? What two out of three catchers- Rupp, Alfaro or Knapp- make the squad?
Alfaro needs to stick since he is out of options. If they can't trade Rupp, Knapp could go back down to Lehigh Valley. In Rupp you know what you have- a slow, average-hitting guy with some power and is below-average defensively. Plus he doesn't always call the greatest game.
In Knapp you have a switch-hitter with decent power who needs work defensively but whose ceiling we haven't seen yet.
I still expect Klentak to make a major deal soon. Package Rupp, Tommy Joseph for pitching. I expect them to keep Cesar Hernandez, at least until June or so, when Scott Kingery should be up form the Iron Pigs to take over second base. I see the organization giving Mychel Franco one last chance this summer . If he fails, I look for the Phils to pull out all stops to sign soon-to-be free agent Manny Machado from Baltimore to anchor third base ( or shortstop, while moving J.P. Crawford to third).
This makes for an interesting spring training. Competition is good and there should be lots of it in camp. Plus how will new manager Gabe Kapler play in his first-ever gig as a manager? Stay tuned.
