The Greatest Brawl
95 years ago today, more than 85,000 spectators witnessed heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey send challenger Luis Firpo to the canvas seven times in the first round before Firpo came back with a haymaker punch that sent Dempsey through the ropes.
57 seconds into the second round Dempsey ended the greatest fist-fight in history, knocking down Firpo for a ninth time. Nicknamed "El Toro de las Pampas" (the wild bull of the Pampas), Firpo was one of the top heavyweights of the world at the time, and he was the first Latin American to challenge for the title (Polo Grounds, New York).
