- So, the Phillies finally won their first series in over a month, again against Miami. Not good enough. As the Braves were losing 2 0f 3 to Washington over the weekend the Phils picked up a game, but with time running out, they need to sweep every game, Thus, they remain 6 1/2 behind Atlanta.
The Braves play 3 vs St. Louis before playing 4 with the Phillies starting on Thursday. Meanwhile the Phillies have 3 with the Mets. Advantage Phillies/ Not so. The Mets always have the Phils' number.Getting the lead down to, let's say 4 1/2 before they meet at least gives Philadelphia show. Take 3 of 4 from Atlanta and suddenly the lead is down to 2 1/2 games going into the final week.
From there it doesn't get easier. $ on the road to a pennant-hungry Rockies team before the last weekend and a trio of games with the Braves. You want to get to within 3 games to make that final weekend meaningful.
Is it time to move Nick Pivetta into the bullpen next season. He strikes-out a ton, and can let loose with his fastball late in games. Maybe this is the season to mature and learn how to pitch. I remember when Hall of Famers Smoltz and Glavine had rocky beginnings before righting the ship and moving on with stellar careers. Could Pivetta and Valasquez have the same path ahead?
Gabe Kapler never learns. Neither does Matt Klentak, who states things won't change next year regarding analytics. Kapler hits Santana clean-up again on Sunday and loses. he is not a clean-up hitter! Stop already! Hoskins should hit 4th and let him there.
I have tickets for Fan Appreciation Day on September 30, so of course I want the Phillies to offer one last challenge but realistically, I've turned the page on the 2018 edition of the Philadelphia Phillies. It should be a fascinating off-season, starting on Monday October 1.
