- What an embarrassment! The Phillies left the tarp off the infield all weekend and they were left with such a soggy, wet , unplayable field last night. They cancelled their game with Washington and now must play a doubleheader with the Nationals, not good for either squad. Hard hard is it to sweep a doubleheader?
Sure, the stupid weather people are to blame. Instead of light showers last weekend we got heavy rain. No groundskeeper on duty over the weekend, while the team was of town, was able to cover the field. meanwhile, the once "dirt" in the infield turned to chocolate pudding unsafe for the million dollar players to perform on.
So, once again, the Phillies organization is a laugihngstock. Bryce harper, free agent-to-be, was jokingly raking the infield as dozens of people, from umpires to GMs, to MLB officials discussed the situation and whether to play or not.
The Phillies should be fined by baseball. The fans, those brave enough to venture to the park, should get their money back, including parking.
But really, who cares anyway? With the braves win in San Francisco last night, the hils are now 5 games behind in NL East, their worst deficit all season, with time running out. The disgustingly optimistic manager, who is living on another planet, is still fine with the team "being in striking distance."
Those 7 remaining games against Atlanta won't matter soon. All the braves need to do is take 3 of 7 and they are safe. The Phillies would almost have to sweep all 7 games, plus don't forget they have a 4-game trip to Colorado in-between the Atlanta series.
As stated here yesterday, they weren't good enough and didn't want it bad enough. period.
Anyway, the legend of the blowtorch Infield ( they actually tried to dry-out the mud with real blowtorches) will live in Philly sports infamous lore, along with the Veterans Stadium concrete turf, the Sixers' leaky roof and the Spectrums' roof blowing off. Acts of God.
Damn Lions. Almost as embarrassing as the Phillies using blowtorches last night, I'm out of the Last Fan Standing football pool after only one week, as the Lions shockingly lost to the Jets big-time. New York only won one road game last season and were playing a rookie QB in his first pro game. Detroit has a new head coach and were at home on Monday Night Football. No problem, right?
Serves me right. The Lions were only 4-4 at home last year. They stinkand one should never take a bad team against another bad team.
Will the Giants regret not drafting Darnold over Barkley? Could be good for the Eagles in long run.
Hopefully some other team in AFC east gives New England a challenge for the division. Will it be the Dolphins or Jets? One will go 2-0 this weekend when Miami travels to the Meadowlands to play the Jets.
I'll be honest- I didn't stay up late to watch the Rams destroy the Raiders. The Rams seem loaded and should cruise thru NFC West., while the Jon Gruden-led raiders may take a step backward with the Chargers and Chiefs strong in AFC West. Gruden is already feeling the heat after trading linebacker mack to the Bears for a pair of 1st round draft picks.
Oakland goes to Denver and Miami the next two weeks. Winnable games but also very losable on the road.
- Couldn't get used to the female play-by-play announcer on the Lions-Jets ESPN game. With such a husky voice, I couldn't believe she wasn't a bad looking blond!
- So, Detroit fired Jim Caldwell, who had the Lions on the doorstep of the playoffs, for goofy Matt Patricia, formerly of the Patriots, and they get totally embarrassed on national TV in his first game as a head coach? What's it like to be a Lions fan this morning?
- Too soon to tell if WR and ex-Eagle DeSean Jackson will play against the Birds this Sunday. He suffered a concussion last week in the Saints' game. You know he will want to play and has always played well vs Philly. The Bucs have weapons but will QB Fitzpatrick get the time he needs on Sunday? The Birds' pass rush must come up big!
- Will Carson Wentz finally play against Indianapolis at home in Week 3? He needs to play by Week 5 when Minnesota invades the Linc for a rematch of the NFC Championship Game . I think the team can get by with Nick Foles the next 3 weeks vs Tampa Bay, Indy and Tennessee, but the Vikings, seeking revenge,, are a different animal.
