- I'm a huge Beatles and Paul McCartney fan, but I have to be honest when I say the oddly named new album called "Egypt Station" sucks.
I've listened to it several times and nothing stands out. Hard to believe the guy amazing songwriter who wrote classics like "Blackbird" and all the other great Beatles/Wings songs for over 50 years is now writing juvenile, pointless crap.
I get it. Paul is trying to reach a younger audience and since he teamed with the annoying Kanye West several years ago, his music has changed. I don't expect his voice to be the same- gravelly and straining now as it is. But I never thought his songwriting would go to pot.
Paul is better than this effort. Hopefully this isn't his last album. There is no John or George Martin around to be honest with Paul and say "Are you kidding?"
That's been the problem with Paul, and John too. they pushed each other,a friendly competition, to write the best songs they could write, and they were honest with each other to say what was great and what wasn't.
Die-hard fans may eat it up. But I'm a die-hard fan and I'm disappointed. I'm not expecting Beatles-like instant hits anymore, but listenable tunes with clever, thought-provoking lyrics isn't too much to ask.
Egypt Station has none of it. Stay away!
I'm much more looking forward to the re-issues of Lennon's Imagine album and The White Album.

On the other hand, the recluse, ex- Journey lead singer Steve Perry, has a new album coming out on October 5th called Traces. I've heard two songs already, "No Erasin'" and "No More Crying" and they are typical Perry-like rock and soul songs. Steve's voice is gravelly with age ( he's 69) but still powerful. He is also doing a cover version of the Beatles- George Harrison song from the "Help!" soundtrack called 'I Need You." Traces is a 10-song set. Looking forward to it!

Why is it that these wealthy, powerful, old, unattractive guys-like the head of CBS resigned today- think they can get away with abusing women for years and not get caught? Are they that desperate and stupid? I'm glad he quit but he also needs to go to jail. And the wives need to wake up too.

So, I'm in a current run of visiting doctors. Don't see a doctor for ages then boom- all at once! Started with a dermatology appointment, which didn't solve the problem at all, so I have to see another Dermatologist in November. Then my "family doctor" has they are known, for a "wellness visit.". Then the dentist for a simple cleaning and check-up, but still yet another waiting room. Soon my urologist and then- the ultimate experience in October- my 10-year colonscopony! Really looking forward to that, especially the prep work the day before when I will attempt to drink gallons of Gatorade mixed with Miralax with a few Duculex tablets for dessert. I know where I will be that day.... writing this blog from the can.

In between these the doctors, I do have a few sports events coming up, which lighten the spirit and give me something to look forward to other than..doctors.I had a rain-out during the Phillies season, so I got to exchange that ticket for any other game on the schedule. I picked Fan Appreciation Day, Sunday, September 30, the final game of the year . It's against Atlanta, the same team the Phils happen to be chasing in the National League East. I thought if it comes down to one last game to decide playoffs or not, I will be there.
Sadly, the Phillies are slowly slipping out of the pennant race, so the game may be meaningless, other than getting a free 2019 schedule magnet and whatever else they try to pan on the remaining fans that afternoon. There may not be many fans there, as the Eagles are playing in Tennessee that afternoon.
Speaking of the Birds, exactly a week later, on October 7 I'll be at the Linc to see the world champions play the Minnesota Vikings, a rematch of last season's NFC Championship Game. Should be a great game. I do back to the Linc on Sunday night, November 11th as the Birds face their dreaded rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. Should be cold but should be fun. Birthday week, so an early present to myself.
Finally, the day after my birthday, the Flyers play a Saturday afternoon contest with the tough Tampa Bay Lightning. Can't afford to go to many Flyers' games, plus hockey isn't really my sport, but it's different in person. Plus much better to be at the Wells Fargo Center than a doctor's office!

I loved Tastykakes as a kid, and still get the Butterscotch Krimpets or Chocolate Juniors when I'm off a diet. Tastykakes are a Philly institution. I used toe specially love their pies. Lemon, cherry and blueberry were always my favorites. The cherry pie had a warning on the box: Warning! Watch for pits! as real whole cherries were used, as were blueberries.
Suddenly, everything changed- instead of the real fruit pies everything was like puree mixture- nowhere near as good. The crust was even different. I stopped buying them.
Now comes word the pies are back like they were - real fruit, old-time crust. I'll check them out soon. Now pumpkin is back since we are approaching Autumn.

Why is Michael Strahan everywhere? granted, he was an excellent football player for the New York Giants. Since he retired he's become a TV celebrity. For a while he shared a morning show with co-diva, er host Kelly Ripa. He does the NFL pre and post-game shows on FOX during the football season. He is on Good Morning America, doing puff pieces. His interviewing skills stink. Now he has a brand new show called GMA Day ( a dumb title since GMA stands for Good Morning America and this new show is on in the afternoon).
Why???
I know he;'s a decent looking guy, but not especially attractive. He speaks with a slight lisp, no biggie. But most of all, he does nothing
It could be the ex-jock thing for women, the fact he is black and from media-friendly New York.
One show is fine, but Angelo was right his morning on his radio show- Strahan is everywhere but why???

I'll be giving a free presentation at the Phoenixville Public Library on Thursday night, January 3, 2019 at 7pm. The approx. one-hour event will be called "Terrific Visits With Your Older Loved one."
Over my 30 years as a social worker, mostly in nursing homes, it often broke my heart when residents didn't get visitors. Oh, maybe once a year around the holidays. Sad when they knew there is family out there but they don't visit.
So, I'll be showing the award-winning short film "Peege", doing a discussion, and revealing my 10 tips for more meaningful visits.
Doesn't have to be in a nursing home. Could be a friend or loved one in an assisted living facility or even at home Maybe you don't know what to do or say? or how to cope with dementia or seeing your loved one decline?
Hopefully this program will help ease fears and produce more comfortable visits for both the elderly loved one and the family member/friend.
Even if there is no one that you know now who needs a visit, there will be someday, as people are living longer. So please circle the date of Thursday, January 3, 2019 on your calender for a fun and important evening!
