PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- Heading to Citizens Bank Park soon to watch the Phillies' finale but keeping a close eye on the Eagles in Tennessee. Beautiful day! Could it be Gabe Kapler's last game as manager of the Phils/ Doubt it. Even though he should go- as well as GM Klentak- I'm thinking ownership will give both another year to right the ship, this time with free agent reinforcements.

- Thank God for Aaron Nola. He finished the season 17-6 and easily could've won 20 games with some luck, more timely hitting  and better management. He emerged as an ace and is a building block for years to come.

- Will ownership speak on Monday? What will they say? can't be happy about the second half collapse. If there are no personnel changes among the coaches, what about more emphasis on fundamentals, less focus on analytics? Who will stay and who will go, player-wise? How do the Phillies bridge the wide gap between themselves and the braves. Now, even the Nationals will finish ahead of Philly, with the Mets  not far behind.

So, the Phillies will become the first team ever in the history of baseball to be as much as 15 games over .500 into the first week of August and not finish with a winning record. only the dreadful Baltimore Orioles had a worse record than the Phillies in the second half of the season.

After today the real work begins. See you in February at spring training!

********************************************************************
Three more Phillies to evaluate this week..

- J.P. Crawford-

Hurt again this year,s till don't know if he is an everyday player. Will he stick with the team, even if Machado signs with Philadelphia? Still too young to give up on, but I can also  see the organization getting a veteran shortstop next year ( the return of Freddie Galvis?). C

- Siranthony Dominguez-

The revelation of the season. Could be the future closer if Kapler keeps him in that role and not use him as a Swiss Army Knife. Only 23 and inexperienced but when used correctly was devastating. Another future building block.

- Wilson Ramos-

Helped stabilize the catcher position. A professional hitter in the line-up. Slow and injured. If not Ramos, the Phillies could use another veteran, defensive-mined backstop next year to team with Alfaro. I wouldn't be against resigning Ramos, who is only 32.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

-Phillies' brass held a seven hour meeting Friday morning and afternoon, reviewing what went wrong this disappointing season. Hopefully owner john Middleton demanded answers.

Gabe Kapler still insisted that the team hasn't given up or quit, despite another lackluster effort Friday night at home, losing to NL East division champs Atlanta, 10-2.  The Phils struck out 14 times. They only had 4 hits. Yet the hitting coach will be back next year? And the players haven't quit?

Is Kapler that delusional or is he just trying to save his job/ GM Klentak has already said that Kapler and all of his coaches will return in 2019. The team president and owners have yet to speak.

Kapler stated after the game they simply "aren't good enough", which is true, but points the finger back to Klentak, who didn't get Kapler the players he needed to sustain their early success. The players seemed to hit a wall and quit. There is little veteran influence in the clubhouse to kick some ass when needed, and Kapler, with his sunny and positive style, isn't cracking the whip, unless it's being done behind closed doors. If it is it hasn't worked.

Kapler says he won't change next year. So, if you like his style of changing line-ups daily, coddling to the players and seeing the bright side in a 14-0 loss, then expect more.

If you want honesty and discipline, look elsewhere.

Klentak didn't get Kapler the players he needed because once again the Phillies over-rated their own prospects. Instead of getting an MVP-type young star like Christian Yelich, whom the Phillies have drooled over for years, they choose not to part with their coveted prospects and allowed Yelich to go to Milwaukee where he is leading the brewers into the playoffs.

I thought it was time to win now, not kick the can down the road?

Unless Middleton announces a news conference on Monday, after the season ends, and surprises everyone by saying he is relieving both Kapler and Klentak of their duties, why should things change> Will a free agent or two make the difference in this team next summer? What if a free agent refuses to come to this dysfunctional organization? The Phillies have geared for this particular off-season free market class for years. What incentive- other than tons of cash- do the really good free agents like Harper and Machado have to sign with Philly?

The team has lost 9 in a row heading into tonight's game with Atlanta. They are mercifully ending their worst September ever in their long, losing history. Ever. They collapsed like no team ever has before, 15 games over .500 in August, only to end up with a losing record in the end. yet, as Klentak recently stated, the team is "improved?"

I was on the Steve Trevelise radio show overnight on WIP Sports Radio. I vented and Steve graciously gave me time to vent. Frustration, disappointment, anger. At least I still care.

I'm going to the finale Sunday afternoon because it's Fan Appreciation Day and when I got the tickets the team was in first place in July. I thought the game would mean something to the Phillies. I was wrong.

I can swallow bad baseball, injuries, or just plain bad luck. I can't take a club that quits. Whomever is the GM next year needs to weed out the losers and bring leadership and dedication to the clubhouse.

I know that firing both the manager and general manager may mean starting over again, but is this team pointed in the right direction now? Is till don't see a young, emerging star, like Washington's Soto or Atlanta's Acuna Jr on the horizon. Their overall No. 1 pick of several years ago, mickey Moniak, continues to struggle in the minors instead of helping the big league club in Philadelphia.

Is there hope? Can the current front office be trusted? Even the team president, Andy MacPhail, who hired Klentak in the first place, how can the fans feel positive and have faith in him?

Significant changes- and not just with the players- needs to occur this off-season..starting on Monday..before I will start to believe again.

****************************************************************

Again, instead of rehashing another dreadful loss, let's focus on 3 more players...

-Roman Quinn-

Has shown flashes of what could be. Then last night he strikes out 3 times. He is fast and can steal bases and puts pressure on opposing pitchers. He covers a lot of ground in the outfield. But he is injury-prone. Instead of bunting, playing small ball and relying on his blazing speed, he seems to have bought in with the analytical approach of swinging too hard, swinging for home runs. The manager should bat Quin lead-off and leave him there for a season and see what happens. It's ridiculous to bat  a guy  like Quinn 5th- behind Rhys Hoskins. Quinn could be a weapon-if he stays healthy and is sued the right way in 2019. C

- Aaron Altherr-

Never came close to what he did last year. A joke to say he has "improved" as Klentak suggested. He needs to play everyday. He is athletic, has all the tools to be an everyday player. Give him a chance. f the Phillies aren't going to stick with Altherr, trade him and maybe a change of scenery would do him good as he is still young.  Unlucky with injuries.D

- Pat Neshek-

A diva. Whines and complains to umpires. refused to close or pitch back-to-back days. Not worth the drama. Mistake to re-sign him as a free agent. Disappointment in the bullpen. D

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- SEPTEMBER 29/30

Brave Hank Aaron

On September 30, 1973, the Atlanta Braves' Henry Aaron completed the 1973 season a single home run shy of Babe Ruth's all-time record. Hammerin' Hank would have to wait the entire off-season for an opportunity to dethrone "the Sultan of Swat."

NFL PREVIEW- WEEK 4

A preview of week 4 in the NFL. But first a review of last night's game..

Rams over Vikings-

LA beat Minnesota,as predicted, 38-21 in a shoot-out. The Rams move to 4-0 in their key nFC match-up while the Vikings sink to 1-2-1. They have 10 days to prepare for a rematch with the Eagles next Sundy. LA starts a three-game road trip in Seattle.

Eagles at Titans-

As detailed in the blog yesterday, I like the Birds to win a close one in Tennessee, 23-17.Sproles won't play, which will again hurt the offense, while Jeffery and Ajayi should be active.

Bengals at Falcons-

2-1 Cincinnati travels to Atlanta to play a 1-2 Falcons team that cannot lose yet another home game and fall farther behind in NFC South.

Buccaneers at Bears-

Tampa comes off their Monday night loss and travels to Chicago, never a good trend. The 2-1 Bears find themselves on top of NFC North.

Lions at Cowboys-

Detroit surprised New England last Sunday night for their first win. Can they keep the momentum going in Dallas? The Cowboys are 1-2 and need a victory.

Packers at Bills-

Buffalo pulled off the upset of the year so far, as 17 point underdogs, winning in Minnesota. The uneven Pack, now 1-1-1, stay on the road.

Texans at Colts-

Houston is winless while the Colts played a competitive gane in Philadelphia last week. The loser is cooked in AFC South.

Dolphins at Patriots-

3-0 Miami takes to the road against desparate New England, losers of two in a row.A must-win for Tom Brady

Jets at Jaguars-

Jacksonville comes off their first home , again a thome. The Jets are back on earth after a surprising crushing of Detroit to open the season. I like the Jags to cover the 7 1/2 points.

Browns at Raiders-

Cleveland is no push-over anymore. Oakland is winless and badly needs a home victory.

Seahawks at Cardinals-

Seattle tries to double down on thier first victory witha division game at Arizona, which is trying to avoid an 0-4 start.

Saints at Giants-

The Giants earned their first victory in Houston last week. They have a tough task trying to keep Drew Brees in check.

49ers at Chargers-

SF lost their QB for the season How will they react, traveling to Los Angeles to play the high-scoring Philip Rivers and the Chargers? I like the Chargers to cover the 10 point spread here.

Ravens at Steelers-

Bitter divisional rivalry. Steelers need home victory badly. Baltimore could make a major statement with a win.

Chiefs at Broncos-

Denver needs this home win to stya in touch with red-hot Kansas City.

DAILY EAGLES TRIVIA

What two Eagles are on the All-Decade team for the 2000s?

Answer: Brian Dawkins and David Akers

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES

- Manager Gabe Kapler claimed his Phillies 'showed a little fight' in their 5-3 loss to the Rockies Thursday afternoon, completing an 0-8  road trip, their worst trip since 1883. They are now 3 games under .500. They need to sweep the Braves this weekend at home just to finish with a .500 record. For the 7th straight year they will not have a winning record, although they were 15 games over .500 as late as August 5.

Yet Kapler says the team has not quit.

We have yet to hear from the team president or owners. GM Klentak flew to Colorado earlier this week and proclaimed that his manager will be back next season, and makes a case for each player on his roster having improved. Plus Kapler himself jumped the gun and announced that his entire coaching staff will return in 2019.

I have tickets for the season finale on Fan Appreciation Day this Sunday. My tickets were upgraded to the Diamond Club, which is good because of the food in there plus they may have the Eagles game on at the same time.

The Phillies are undefeated the four other games I've attended this season, so I hope they win the meaningless game against the NL East champion Braves. The great Ranger Suarez will be pitching for the Phils.

Otherwise, let them continue to lose, although since these are meaningless games, Middletons' mind should be made up by now on whether to keep Kapler, Klentak, both or neither for 2019.

To me, both need to go. It would mean starting over again, but this is a crucial time for the Phillies franchise. They have aimed for this off-season and this collection of free agents on the open market for years. I really don't trust the current front office to get anything significant done, nor do I have faith in the analytical-crazy manager, who says already he won't change next year. So, what's the point?

Making changes now would show fans that management is listening and cares and this total, historical collapse is unacceptable. But the poor talent evaluation, the poor drafting, signing of free agents and trades have been going on for a while now, not only during the last seven weeks of shitty baseball, as Kapler himself put it.

There's got to be a better blend of the old and the new. Analytics are here to stay, like it or not. But old-time baseball common sense and values should  not be thrown away  in the process.

Give the fans reason for hope. Give the fans reason to buy tickets next season.

*********************************************************************

Instead of rehashing another loss, this week I have been reviewing and previewing members of the 2018 Phillies. Here are three more:

  Tommy Hunter-

A bust free agent signing. Had a few good moments during the year, but did not pitch like he did in the past for Tampa Bay's bullpen. Not to be trusted, Kapler used him in too many key situations where Hunter failed.  D

Nick Williams-

When he played he was inconsistent so we really don't know if he can be an everyday player or not. He is an RBI-machine at times and plays decently in the outfield. But is he a building block for the future? We don't know because Kapler didn't keep the same line-up everyday and Hoskins was forced to play left field ( because of the Carlos Santana signing) which took up an outfield spot. I think he is a part of the future if given a chance to play. B

Andrew Knapp-

Proving this season he is not an everyday big league catcher. A switch-hitter, he will get a job somewhere in baseball if not with the Phillies. Poor defensively, the club can't have two weak defensive catchers on the team. He neither hits for average or consistent power and seems to have changed his minor league swing to a more analytical- uppercut swing for home runs. Maybe it's the current hitting coach? D

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY-SEPTEMBER 28

"The honor of my race, family and self is at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. i will. My whole body and soul are to be thrown recklessly about the field. Every time the ball is snapped, I will be trying to do more than my part...Fight low, with your eyes open and toward the play. Watch out for cross-blocks and reverse end runs. Be on your toes every minute if you expect to make good.'

CHIRPING BIRDS- WEEK 4- EAGLES- TITANS

When the schedule first came out in April, and I went over the potential wins and losses like we all do, I counted this upcoming game at Tennessee a loss. I thought the Birds, with or without Wentz, would go 3-0 before playing the Titans. The loss in Tampa Bay changed my views since then.

The Titans had a big win at rival Jacksonville last week. i expect a little letdown this week. The Titans' offense continues to struggle, despite QB Mariotta playing well so far.

Wentz did well in the Indianapolis victory last week. Now that the anxiety is over about how well he could play in an actual game, and more importantly, after he took a hit, I expect Wentz to play even better this Sunday.

More so, receiver Alsohn Jeffery should be back this week, with hopefully weapons Sproles and Ayaji. I submit the Eagles still could use a speed wide-out with the absence of injured Mike Wallace. I see their defense limiting the Tennessee offense. Yes, they will face a different animal in Mariotta and his ability to scramble. That will be a challenge.

Eagle fans travel well. They lost a bit of steam in Tampa . DeSean Jackson's early touchdown bomb. This week , especially with a faster start, Birds' fans will be more vocal , which should help the defense, which plays much better at home.

Just announced: Safety Rodney McLeod is out for the season with an ACL tear. Not good. let's see how the secondary adjusts.

I think it will be a tough game in Tennessee. Philly always seems to have troubles with AFC teams. But somehow I feel the Birds win a close one, preparing for a much bigger game next week with Minnesota.

The difference between 3-1 and 2-2 is huge. It's a winnable road game on a schedule where every team will be gunning for the Super Bowl champs. The road gets tougher down the road. Stockpile the wins now.

PHILLIES SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- The Phillies have quit. it's one thing to lose baseball games. The get beat historically like the Phillies are getting beat is quitting.

To  Kapler's credit, he finally got mad last night after a 14-0 blowout, saying the club is playing "shitty baseball."

Too much  has already been done to now suddenly show fake angry emotion to save his job.

Kapler announcing ahead of time that all his coaches would return next season was a mistake. Why? The team has taken a step backward, not forward. They are boring and embarrassing to watch. No one is going to the games. No one is watching the games. No one cares.

Yet, as Klentak said yesterday, flying all the way to Denver to avoid most of the Philadelphia press and encounter the soft Phillies media who travel with the team, clueless Klentak believes this has been a "competitive" year. Ridiculous, insulting comments by Klentak, who maybe flew to Colorado to try and salvage his own job. Back in the day, a general manager like Paul Owens or Dallas Green would go into the clubhouse himself and dress-down the prima-donna players. it ain't happening with this young, inexperienced and over-matched manager and general manager.

He failed big time. Drafting Mickey Moniak, who should be helping the big league club by now, as the No. 1 overall pick. By signing free agent busts Santana, Arrieta and Hunter to name but a few. For passing on Yelich, Hamels and Machado and bringing in guys like Bour, Loup and Cabera instead.

The only hope is that we haven't heard from owner John Middleton yet. He is listening to the fans/ Is he thats stupid to believe that anything will change next season under the current leadership? Will he need to drastically over-pay free agents who really don't want to come to Philly and play for a dysfunctional organization?

The fans aren't stupid. They deserve answers. They need hope and a reason to buy tickets next year. Otherwise Middleton and the other owners will be looking at  a lot of blue empty seats again next summer. He is too smart of a businessman to allow that to happen again.

Trust. Faith. Hope. A winning attitude. Honesty. Fundamentals. A commitment to win and be the best and do everything it takes to achieve greatness. All lacking in the 2018 edition of the historically bad Phillies.
Worst September ever. After being 25 games over .500 as late as August, will finish below .500 for the season. Will finish in third place, let alone first or second.

Who is accountable for this mess? They can't hit, field and their pitching wore down. They are boring and stupid to watch.

Do the right thing, John Middleton! Bring in real baseball men, lessen the analytics crap, draft wisely and sign good free agents and make smart trades.

Most of all, make the fans care again. Put your baseball team in the hands of someone you can trust. Restore sanity to the organization. Stop with all the drama. Look around you- at the Red Sox, Cubs and Braves.

You, John Middleton, have the power to make Phillies fans feel good again. Please listen to the fans and do the right thing! We have all suffered long enough.

******************************************************************

More season-ending reviews and previews..

- Jorge Alfaro-

Has raw power but swings way too hard and strikes-out way too much. Plus he is poor at best defensively. Can't the organization hire Carlos Ruiz to coach the weak defensive Phillies catchers? Alfaro is young with tons of promisea and potential. he needs to harness everything, not get lazy on defense, and have a much better approach at the place. If Ramos returns next year, will they split time?  C-

- Nick Pivetta-

Lost his 14th game of the season last night. Has the strike-out stuff but doesn't know how to pitch. Is he better suited for a spot in the bullpen or is he trade bait/ He regressed under the current pitching coach (w ho doesn't get enough flack). D

- Odubel Herrera-

Not a championship player Too streaky at the plate. Hit home runs this season but that turned out to be a bad thing. he has the potential to be a .300 hitter, with 40 doubles and 10 triples every year. Or is he what he is- a Rule 5 player all along? Plays shaky defense. Doesn't hustle all the time. Makes stupid base-running mistakes. it's time to move on from Herrera. but just like Hernandez, coming off a subpar year, don't expect the Phillies to get as much worth as last year.Still, you can't bring Herrera back and expect to win a championship someday. D

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- SEPTEMBER 26

Fore the Record

Name the first American Golfer to be ranked #1 in the world based on the scoring system implemented in 1986.

Answer: Fred Couples, 1991.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, GRITTY

- Gabe Kapler deserves to get fired immediately, if not sooner. Again, Odubel Herrera fails to run out a ground ball last night. Instead of calling him out after the game, or at least acknowledging the lack of hustle, Kapler said he "needs to watch the tape."

Bullshit. Kapler isn't honest with the fans, let alone the media. He is over-matched and too caught up with analytics. Free agents may not want to a dysfunctional, loser organization.

- Remember Christian Yelich? He went to Milwaukee and is having a MVP-type year. At one time the Phillies were hot after Yelich. In fact he was linked to Giancarlos Stanton in any deal.

Instead we got Santana. What happened/ Another Klentak blunder.

Please, John Middleton, listen to the fans. Clean house. Give the fans a reason to care again. No one is going to the games. Why should I buy tickets next season?

It's the worst September in 76 years. The Phillies are one game under .500 now. An improved record means nothing. The rebuild is over yet we still don't know if some of the younger players, like Kingery, Williams and Cozens can play.

- Rather than rehash another horrible Phillies' loss- their 6th defeat in a row- a 10-3 beating in Colorado- let's continue to review and preview 3 more players..

- Carlos Santana-

A huge free agent mistake. He hit 23 home runs and has walked over 100 times. But he can't hit for average. His defense is poorer than expected. At times he acts like he doesn't care by not hustling and going brain-dead on the bases and in the field. Ridiculous that he batted clean-up for much of the year. Forced Hoskins to play left field. Total bust and needs to be traded .F

-Hector Neris-

Was the closer, melted down- again came back from Lehigh Valley and performed well. I wouldn't trust him as a closer again. He may have a role as a set-up guy next season. C

- Rhys Hoskins-

Had a good season. He was hurt during the year, yet will still ended up with 32-plus home runs. Went cold and seemed to wear down later in the summer. Should do even better if he plays first base and stays at first base. Seems to get into funks where he chases bad balls. Young enough to get even better and be the face of the team, along with Nola. He should be the clean-up hitter. Period. B

Brilliant marketing move by the Flyers! Mixed opinions on gritty, the new Flyers' mascot, an orange fluffball . It looks like Donald Trump's hair had a lid. Anyway, Not sure how I feel about Gritty. Hey, it's entertainment. If it makes the experience of attending a flyers game more enjoyable, why not/ Plus imagine all the Gritty dolls and t-shirts they will sell.

If the response by fans, the media and the Internet indicate anything, Gritty has already been a success for the Orange and Black.

DAILY EALGES TRIVIA

Who was Andy Reid's first starting quarterback?

Answer: Doug Pederson.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- SEPTEMBER 25

Holy Cow

'Well that (Pope Paul VI passing away) kind of puts the damper on even a Yankee win."

- Phil Rizzuto ( 1978)

Phil 'The Scooter" Rizzuto was born on this date in 1918.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, NFL, FLYERS, EAGLES, NEWS

- The Phillies lost their 5th game in a row last night in Colorado, a 10-1 thrashing. Who cares/ They are now at .500. They must win 4 of their last 6 games to finish with a winning record. They still have 3 with the Rockies, and then meaningless games at home with NL East champs Atlanta.

- Zach Eflin only pitched 2 innings. Seems like he went downhill ( like the rest of the team), after the team screwed him out of $20,000 by sending him to Lehigh Valley for a week.

- The free agent signings- Arrieta, Santana, Hunter, and the pick-ups at the trade deadline- Cabrera, Loup, Bour, didn't work out. Ramos was a welcome addition but Klentak failed to get Cole Hamels, who has helped the Cubs.

Howard Eskin had a great point on the morning Show today. Top free agents are reluctant to come to Philadelphia now and play for goofy Gabe Kapler. Combined with the total meltdown, don't be surprised if both Kapler and Klentak are in trouble. Meanwhile,e owner John Middleton remains deadly silence. No endorsements. He is watching and waiting.

So instead of rehashing meaningless games the rest of the week, let's talk about players and coaches- a review and preview of their fate, with a season grade.

- Mychal Franco- Inconsistent as always. Had a decent year once he hit his stride, then tailed off in August before he got hurt. he's still young (only 25- seems like he's been around forever0, but I think the Phillies have given up on him and will try to deal him in the off-season. C

- Scott Kingery- Given a big contract before the season began. A debate whether he should start the year at Lehigh Valley or come north with the big club. never hit his stride, playing out of position, rarely playing second base, in which he is Gold Glove caliber. He went from super utility guy to shortstop to not playing much at all. He needs to play second base full time next season C

Aaron Nola- Had a Cy Young worthy great year. Became the team ace.Should be great for years to come. One of the few building blocks on the club. Imagine what he could do with a stable manager and decent pitching coach.

*********************************************************************

- Gritty is the new Flyers mascot. A big orange fluff ball. A combination of Donald Trump and Howard Eskin. He was introduced yesterday and promptly fell on his face on the ice at last night's home exhibition game. Gritty ( spelled with a  G, not a S) is already an internet sensation- for better or for worse.

It may do well with the kids, otherwise it's a joke. The eyes look crazed. Not a furry cuddly, huggable creature. Will Gritty survive or fail like Big Shot, the Sixers mascot, or the stupid rabbit, or even Swoop, the Eagles' lame mascot. I'm sure the Flyers' promotion department is already hard at work, making Gritty shirts, dolls, you name it. Gritty will be forced down our throats this season.

My condolences to the family of the great eagles' wide receiver Tommy McDonald,w ho died yesterday at age 84. My sympathies to his good friend Ray Didinger, wrote a play about his relationship with McDonald called Tommy & Me.

Thank you Mr. McDonald for your football talents and your great personality. Thank you Ray for writing the play, and letting the fans see the real Tommy. Thank you for helping Tommy finally get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after 30 years of waiting.

No player or human deserved it as much as Tommy. RIP Tommy....

All the more reason for bringing back Tommy & Me next year, for for years to come.

Pittsburgh squeezed by Tampa Bay last night on Monday Night Football. The Steelers move to 1-1-1, while the Bucs fall to 2-1, into a  tie with New Orleans and Carolina in NFC South. The Steelers, despite the win, just aren't the same team, with discourse in their locker room. Pittsburgh goes home on Sunday for a huge division rivalry game with Baltimore while the buccaneers go to Chicago to play the surprising Bears.

NFL WRAP-UP WEEK 3

My impressions of Week 3 in pro football, with the Steelers at the Buccaneers tonight...

Browns over Jets-

Jets aren't prime-time just yet, even after destroying Detroit on Monday Night Football in week 1. Browns, with QB Baker Mayfield are better and will actually be a force to reckon with in AFC North. Cleveland travels to winless Oakland next weekend while New York goes to Jacksonville.

Eagles over Colts-

See my review
elsewhere in the blog. The Birds play at the Titans next Sunday while the Colts host the winless Texans.

Saints over Falcons-

Typical Falcons- Saints shoot-out. Atlanta is so inconsistent. They play at home again next week against  Cincinnati. New Orleans goes to the meadowlands to play the Giants.

Chiefs over 49ers-

As expected,  KC crushed the Niners at Arrowhead, but the biggest news was the loss of San Francisco QB Jimmy Garofolo for the season with an ACL. Could SF be calling the Eagles for Nick Foles/ Are we looking a tAndy Reid playing the birds in the Super Bowl in February? Kansas City goes to Denver for a big AFC West match-up while the 49ers try to recover at the Chargers.

Dolphins over Raiders-

Nice to see a team finally give the Patriots some competition in AFC east. The Dolphins are 3-0 and playing at angry New England next week. Oakland hopes to get their first win at home against the Browns.

Bills over Vikings-

The biggest upset in the NFL in years. Buffalo, once a 17 point underdog, go into Minnesota and destroy the Vikes. Minnesota had to be over-confident, as now they have road games ahead vs the Rams and Eagles. Buffalo stay on the road at Green Bay next week.

Redskins over Packers-

Washington goes to 2-1 with the home win, while the Pack slip to 1-1-1. Next week the Skins have an early bye while the Pack host the Bills.

Panthers over Bengals-

Carolina stays right behind Tampa Bay as Cincy loses its first game of the season. The Bengals go to Atlanta while Carolina takes an early bye.

Titans over Jaguars-

Ina boring AFC South rivalry, Tennessee prevailed at Jacksonville, tying their division. The Titans go home and host the Eagles on Sunday, while the Jags stay home against  the jets.

Ravens over Broncos-

Baltimore is a different team at home. With the Steelers struggling, the Ravens can seize control of AFC North. They play three road games in a row, starting with a bitter game in Pittsburgh next week. Denver goes home to play the red-hot Chiefs.

Giants over Texans-

The Giants get their first win of the season against a surprisingly bad Houston squad. The G-men go home next week to face the Saints while the Texans try to avoid a 0-4 start at Indianapolis.

Rams over Chargers-

In the battle of Los Angeles, the explosive Rams out-lasted the Chargers. The Rams have a short week but stay at home Thursday Night against the reeling Vikings, while the Chargers host San Francisco.

Bears over Cardinals-

Arizona is bad, going 0-3 but they did cover at home against the Bears. Chicago are actually on top of NFC North at 2-1. Da Bears host a Tampa bay team playing tonight, while the Cards stay in the desert against Seattle.

Seahawks over Cowboys-

Seattle had to win yesterday to avoid an 0-3 start. Dallas is a bad team without weapons. Seattle goes to Arizona for a NFC West game while Dallas returns home to face the Lions.

Lions over Patriots-

Detroit looked awful in their opener against the lowly jets yet they cause the Patriots to lose two straight games since 2015. Go figure. The Lions go to the Cowboys next week while 1-2 New England prepares for a home game against division-leading Miami.

CHIRPING BIRDS- WEEK3 WRAP-UP- EAGLES VS COLTS

After the Eagles beat the Colts..

- Sign of a good team is winning even when you don't play your best. Eagles are without their weapons. Plus they have a huge bull's-eye on their back for every team wanting to knock off the defending Super Bowl champ. So, even at home, no surprise the Birds had squeaked out a win over Indianapolis.

- Carson Wentz looked elusive and impressive in his first game back. he makes everyone else look quicker and more confident. Somehow, someway, Wentz will get it done.

-Penalties hurt the Birds yesterday but they also benefited from several calls, including a key defensive holding call to keep a drive alive with a little over six minutes left in the 4th quarter. Penalties break the flow of the game. not as much fun to watch as a fan, thinking there may be a flag on every play to cancel a big gain. There's got to be a happy medium.

- Corner Jalan Mills sucked again yesterday. He's just not that good. Hopefully Sidney Jones eventually moves outside  from the slot or Rasul Douglas gets more playing time.

- Hopefully Jeffery is back this week against Tennessee. Are Ajayi and Sproles far behind? Whatever, the team can still use a DeSean Jackson-like speedy receiver .

- With San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garafalo possibly out for the season with an ACL injury, is it time to trade QB Nick Foles?

- Bad decision by coach Pederson, trying a 55-yard field goal on a rainy, wet field and giving the Colts excellent field position, which led to their game-tying score. Kicker Jake Elliot is wildly inconsistent. Even extra points are an adventure.

- Credit the fans for being so loud Sunday afternoon that it effected Indy at the end. Me and my nephew usually sit in that end zone, in section 112. It does get extremely noisy there, with crazy Birds' fans stamping their feet and screaming.

- Andrew Luck is back as the Indy QB but he's not the same. Even on the last play of the game, when the Colts needed a Hail Mary pass into the end zone, Indy substituted their stronger-armed second-string quarterback.

The sack rule and protecting quarterbacks is becoming a joke in pro football. Twice already this season Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews has been penalized on key plays for supposedly body-slamming opposing quarterbacks during sack. Like the catch rule, they are making the game too confusing, too complicated and too soft.

- The Eagles move to 2-1, tied with the Redskins on top of NFC East. Philly travels to Tennessee to take on the 2-1 Titans. Before the season  I had the Birds undefeated going into Tennessee, losing to the Titans. Now I' ll make my pick later in the week.

I did go 3-0 with my NFL picks here in the blog and on Twitter ( #WheelinGreg), winning and covering with the Chiefs, Redskins and Seahawks.

DAILY EAGLES TRIVIA

Dick Vermeil was the first of what type of assistant coach in the NFL?

Answer: Vermeil was the first special teams coach under George Allen's Rams

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

- Maybe the Phillies will lose out , embarrass the front office even more, and force John Middleton and the other Phillies owners to make drastic changes after the season. Otherwise, same old analytics story in 2019.

I was all for signing Arrieta. I was wrong. He had little left of what once made him a great pitcher Now the Phillies are stuck with him for two more years. maybe he can be a competent No. 3 or 4 starter?

Arrieta was a free agent bust signing, along with Santana (who Kapler kept insisting on batting clean-up for some reason),  Neshek and Hunter. I've seen enough of Hernandez, Santana, Franco and Herrera. Defense needs to improve and a big way to improve is to play players at their normal positions.

The team needs a closer. Dominguez may be a closer in the future. So, make him one. Don't pitch him two innings at a time, or in the 7th inning. Siranthony, if he is the closer next year, should strictly pitch in the 9th inning.

Signing Ramos should be a priority. He is not only a good hitter he is better defensively than Alfaro, who has potential with his raw power, but is awful behind the plate and strikes-out way too much.

Four games in Colorado coming up. They will have the pedal to the medal, going for the NL West crown and a wild card spot.  Next weekend could be a different story, since I'm sure the  Braves will be resting key players for the upcoming playoffs.

Finishing above .500 is so important psychologically after being in 1st place for over a month this summer. To implode and sink so low would be crushing to a fan base who don't go to the games, even when there was a pennant race.

- It has turned out to be a drizzly, rainy day here, and it looks like cool , wet conditions for the return of Carson Wentz. Hopefully that doesn't impair his footing or ability to be mobile in the pocket. Even though the Birds are down to two running backs, I think the plan is to run the ball and stick with shorter passes to the tight ends. Not that Wntz won't take shots downfield during the course of the game.

I still say Eagles 23 Colts 10

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

Gutless team. Gutless front office. Didn't want it bad enough. Hopefully the braves clinch today or Sunday so the players could watch the celebration of what could have been. The players might care. The front office? Not so much..

Lots of time to do a post-mortem on this dead team. I hope they lose out- two more in Atlanta, 4 in Colorado, 3 more against Atlanta.

John Middleton needs to make changes on October 1st, No one cares. no one is going to the games. Boring, analytic baseball. Too many strike-outs and walks. Poor fundamentals. the list goes on and on.

My ideal line-up for 2019:

1B Hoskins
2B Kingery
SS Machado
3B Franco
LF Williams
CF Quinn
RF Harper
C Ramos

Santana, Arrieta and Hunter were free agent busts who's fault was that?

Why should i buy tickets for next season?

Is this team going in the right direction under the supervision of Kapler and Klentak?

Will MacPhail and Middleton address the fans and media after the season? No excuses. Start spending money wisely. Get baseball guys in charge. Get better coaches and scouts. The farm system needs to get better.

Too much analytics. Stop already!

Did we have meaningful  baseball late in the year? yes. Was it fun scoreboard watching most of the summer/ yes. Is it disappointing now that we had a taste of first place for over a month? Yes.

I have tickets to Fan Appreciation Day next Sunday. Maybe I'll win something because who else will be a the game while the Eagles are playing?

NFL PREVIEW- WEEK 3

My thoughts on the upcoming weekend's pro football games. But first, last night..

Browns over Jets-

Cleveland wins it's first game since Christmas Eve, 2018. They are now 1-1-1. What happened to the Jets, who destroyed the Lions on Monday night Football, but have now lost two in a row and have returned to the bad Jets of old?

Colts at Eagles-

Wentz returns and the Eagles at at home. Need I say more? Eagles win 23-10

Saints at Falcons-

Both shaky 1-1 NFC South teams. Atlanta should win, being at home, leaving the Saints wondering how good-or-bad- they really are.

49ers at Chiefs-

At Arrowhead Stadium, with the Chief's home opener and already 2-0, I see them covering the 6 1/2 point spread.

Raiders at Dolphins-

Miami has a chance to go 3-0 and challenge New England early in AFC East. The Raiders fly east and need a win badly.

Bills at Vikings-

Minnesota is a huge 16 1/2 point favorites. Buffalo is awful but are they really that bad?

Packers at Redskins-

Can the Skins lose their first two home games? meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers tries to give the Pack a 2-1-1 record. I like Washington getting 3 points at home.

Bengals at Panthers-

Carolina should beat surprising 2-0 Cincy but I wouldn't be surprised if an upset occurs.

Titans at Jaguars-

Tennessee needs an early win over host Jacksonville to stay with the Jags in AFC South.

Broncos at Ravens-

Baltimore is always tough at home.Denver isn't as good as their record indicates.

Giants at Texans-

Will Houston finally get it together in their home opener? New York continues it's brutal early schedule.

Chargers at Rams-

Cross-town rivals. Chargers are a dangerous team in what should be a high-scoring shoot-out.

Bears at Cardinals-

Who are the Bears to give points on the road?  Have we seen the last of Sam Bradford if Arizona loses big again?

Cowboys at Seahawks-

Always a  tough place to play, Seattle will be even more hyped after an 0-2 start. I like the Seahawks to cover the 1 1/2 points.

Patriots at Lions-

Will new England lose two games in a row> Are the Lions that bad?

Steelers at Buccaneers-

Pittsburgh could go an unbelievable 0-2-1 to start the season if they lose Monday Night to the surprising Bucs.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- We are nearing the end of a long, slow death for the Phillies. They have no one else to blame but themselves. They lost their most important game of the season last night in Atlanta, dropping 6 1/2 games behind the Braves in NL East with 10 games to go.

Same old story. The team beat itself with poor defensive, too many strike-outs in key situations and bad relief pitching when it counted.

Why did the out-of-position Santana bat clean-up again? Why did Kapler removed starter Valasquez in the 3rd inning of a tie score, yet allow Luis Garcia in so long, getting shelled in the crucial 8th inning?

Why was the inconsistent Tommy Hunter in the game late in a must-win situation while more effective relievers like Dominguez, Neris and even Neshek languished in the bullpen?

Have we finally seen enough of Vince Valasquez as a starter? Shouldn't he be a back of the bullpen guy next season instead?

Wouldn't Cole Hamels, a big game pitcher, have looked good starting a key series last night instead of Valasquiz?

Catcher Alfaro again had problems with passed balls and wild pitches. Is Carlos Ruiz available after the season as a teacher?

Are the Phillies' dopey owners watching this implosion? Are they still big on analytics and nothing will change, as clueless GM Klentak says?

Atlanta just came off a 4-game losing streak but they play fundamental baseball, have a young superstar in AcunaJr, and a deep farm system. No matter how much they Phillies spend in the offseason to overcomes their faults, they still have a long way to go in the NL East.

Nick Pivetta goes tonight. If the Phillies have any hope at all for 2018 they must win three in a row in Atlanta now. That would take the lead down to 3 1/2 games. Then they must win at least 3 of 4 in Colorado, while the Braves lose at least 2 of 3 to the Mets. That would shrink the lead to 2 games, with 3 final games between Atlanta and Philadelphia next weekend in Philly.

Anything less and it's wait til next year and see you in Clearwater in February, 2019.

EAGLES-COLTS- WEEK 3- THE PICK

The Eagles are 1-1 and back home this week after an upset loss in Tampa last Sunday. QB Carson Wentz makes his long-awaited return and has been given the OK form the docs to play.

The Colts are also 1-1, beating the Redskins in Washington. QB Andrew Luck is back and playing well. New coach Frank Reich, ex-Eagle coach, has totally changed the team.

Philly is a 7 point favorite on Sunday. They will still be without key weapons such as Jeffery and Ajayi, maybe even Sproles. They need to use re-signed vet Matthews and rookie Goedart.

As always, turnovers will be key. I see the  Birds riding the emotion of the fans, getting an early lead and rolling with the momentum. It will either be a tight, tense duel between Wentz and Luck or the Birds will swamp the Colts- no in-between.

The Eagles, losing a game they should've won, need to stockpile the victories early, before their schedule gets tougher later. Certainly, winning this week against Indianapolis, and next week at Tennessee, will be mandatory before their huge NFC Championship Game rematch with Minnesota on October 7 ( I'll be at the Linc for the Viking game).

I can't see Philadelphia losing this home game to an inferior opponent. yes, they always have trouble with AFC teams. But not this week.  The defense will step up, put pressure on Luck, and shut down the Indy running game.

Make it Eagles 23 Colts 10

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS

- The Phillies play their most important game of the 2018 season tonight. They are all important now, as they open a 4-game series in Atlanta. The Phils are 5 1/2 games off the pace in NL East. They need to at least take 3 of 4 to still have a shot next week.

Vince Vlasquez is 0-4 against the Braes this season. He starts tonight but expect him to be on a short leash, with so many pitchers available and a must-win situation facing the team.

Now is the time for guys like Santana to step up. After a mediocre year at best needs to earn his $20 million and have a helluva series in Atlanta. Getting off to a fast start, let's say a 4 runs 1st inning, would give the team confidence and take the frenzied Atlanta crowd out of the game early. The braves could clinch this weekend. Even if they merely split  and stay 5 1/2 games ahead after Sunday night, they most assuredly have the division title.

Everyone thought the Nationals would easily take the East. Atlanta has a young club like the Phillies, only the young Braves have been better, more mature and overall played more fundamental baseball this season.

Without an Acuna Jr or Soto in the system, a young stud for years to come, the Phillies need to spend money they have been hoarding for years, and stay in contention next ya free agents. Nice start would be re-signing Ramos and inking bot Machado and Harper.

Boring, analytical baseball is one reason why no one is going to the games, even in a pennant race. Only 19,000 showed up at the ballpark last night, an embarrassment to Phillies' management. They just aren't a very entertaining team, with too many strike-outs and walks, and not enough contact and small ball (stealing, moving runners etc.) If the analytics continue next season, as geeky GM Klentak suggests, management needs to decide- do we want a front office strictly doing things by the numbers, or a more entertaining product? The Phillies are plodding alone with no purpose and bad leadership.

As for this slowly-dying first season under Gabe Kapler, let's see if this Phillies team has the heart to give this season one last fight.

- Brett Brown says guard Markelle Fultz took 150,000 shots this summer to improve his shooting technique. Who counted and how many went in?

-The Flyers won thier initial pre-seaosn game last night. Rookie goalie Carter Hart looked good. He needs to have a good camp in order to make the team and force GM Ron Hexstall to ride his young, promising goaltenders and junk the washed-up netminders he usually rides. Without a true No. 1 goalie the Flyers aren't going anywhere.

IN THE NEWS- JUSTICE DEPARTMENT URGED TO ADDRESS WEB ACCESSIBILITY

Today's article from Disability Scoop..

Citing growing litigation, a group of senators is calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to weigh in on how the Americans with Disabilities Act applies online.

In a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions this month, a half-dozen Republican senators said that the time is now for his agency to speak out.

"Right now it is not clear whether the ADA applies to websites. This leaves business and property owners unsure of what standards, if any, govern their online services," the six senators wrote.

In just the first half of this year, there were more lawsuits filed related to website accessibility than in all of last year, the senators indicated.

"The department should waste no time in resolving this uncertainty, which will no doubt increase accessibility while curbing unnecessary and abusive litigation," the letter states.

In 2010, the Justice Department said that it planned to issue rules on website accessibility, but nothing ever materialized and the proposal was ultimately withdrawn in December 2017.

At the time, the agency said it was " evaluating whether promulgating regulations about the accessibility of web information and services is necessary and appropriate."

With their correspondence, however, the senators said that the current situation is only benefiting attorneys and urged the Justice Department to "promptly' take action by filing statements of interest in pending litigation and other steps.

"Clarity in the law will encourage private investment in technology and other measures that will improve conditions for the disabled,' the senators wrote.

Justice Department spokeswoman Kelly Laco said the agency has received the letter and is reviewing it.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES

- So, the Phillies cut Atlanta's lead in NL East to 5 1/2 games. As the braves go in the tank, losing 4 in a row ( they do lead St. Louis, 5-3, this afternoon in the 7th inning), Philly continues to win one, lose one, to lowly teams like the marlins and Mets. Not good enough. The Phils need a streak, as they finish with new York tonight before venturing to Atlanta for the beginning of the long-awaited 4-game series with the Braves this weekend.

The Phillies need to sweep, or at least take 3 of 4 to have  shot. Even a slim shot. While Philadelphia goes to Colorado next week for a huge 4-game set, the Braves take on the Mets in New York. Advantage braves, before they come to Citizens Bank Park for the final weekend of the season.

The Phillies have no one to blame for where they are today but themselves. Losing key series to bad teams like Cincinnati, Miami, San Diego, among others. Losing early to Atlanta. Losses in April count as much as losses in September. Remember Opening Day in Atlanta?

To get a wild card spot is even more far-fetched. Philly is 6 1/2 out of the wild card with three teams to jump over. Ain't gonna happen!

Nola didn't get the win last night. He has two more starts left in the season- both against Atlanta. So he could finish with 18 wins, a huge year.

The more Kapler plays Santana at third base makes me believe they may trade Franco in the off-season and move Hoskins back to first base. Franco had a better year and is still young. I wish they would dump Santana and his huge salary instead.

Kapler calls the struggling Jake Arrieta a "horse.' More like a hose's ass, a free agent bust. Hey, I wanted them to sign Arrieta, so no reason to bitch at the front office. He's just not the same Arrieta anymore. With 2 more years left on his contract, he may eventually slide down to No. 3 or 4 in the rotation, depending if the team does pursue Arizona lefty Patrick Corbin after the season.

- Speaking of other baseball news, right now looks like Milwaukee and St. Louis will be the wild card clubs in the National League. The Cubs should hang on and win the division. I'm surprised the Dodgers have climbed back into 1st place in NL West, with the Diamondbacks not 6 out. I thought Arizona had the strongest team in NL West at one point.

In the American League, it's still a  Yankees-A's wild card game in New York. There are no other pennant races going.

- The Sixers will announce on Thursday that former player Elton Brand will be their new general manager. About time. Now Brett Brown can focus on coaching only. Brand should do a good job, altohugh for this year, the club looks pretty set, and not nearly as strong.

Jimmy Butler wants out of Minnesota but do you really want a disgruntled Butler with the Sixers?
They need shooters and more talent, that's for sure.

- The Eagles signed ex-Bird wide-out Jordan Matthews. Another ex- Jeremy Maclin- may be in their radar too. They need play makers, a guy who can burn and take the top off the defense, otherwise defenses will stack the box and dare Wentz to make plays.

- Speaking of Wentz, Sunday is the ideal spot for his return. A home game against a team we should beat. The big game will be October 7th vs Minnesota, a rematch of the NFC Championship Game.

The updated Las Vegas odds for winning the Super Bowl are just out. The Eagles are 12 to 1, along with Green Bay and Kansas City. The Rams are still the favorites. With Wentz back I would take the Birds at 12 to 1 to repeat as champs.

NFL WRAP-UP- WEEK 2

A total wrap-up of the NFL Week 2..

Bengals over Ravens-

Are the Bengals legit? They go 2-0. Baltimore scores 47 points in week 1 then loses to Cincy. I don't like Marvin Lewis, the Cincinnati coach, but it wold be nice to see a team give the struggling Steelers a challenge in AFC North. Bengals go to Carolina next week while the Ravens play at home against Denver.

Falcons over Panthers-

Makes sense Atlanta would bounce back from their opening night loss to the Eagles with a key home division win over Carolina. The Panthers are still going to be a tough, improved team. Atlanta stays home for the Saints, while 1-1 Carolina hosts Cincinnati before an early bye week.

Colts over Redskins-

Maybe the Colts won't be as bad with QB Andrew Luck back at the helm. New coach Frank Reich sure will be inventive. Indy comes to the Linc on Sunday to face the Eagles. Washington loses a home game and new QB Alex Smith fails, as the Skins go 1-1.Washington faces Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers at home this week before an early bye week.

Titans over Texans-

Disappointed in Houston, going 0-2 against a mediocre Tennessee team. The titans look to hang with Jacksonville in AFC South. Houston plays its first home game of the season this week against the 0-2 Giants, while the Titans are at 2-0 Jacksonville for a huge early game.

Buccaneers over Eagles-

Tampa Bay may really be better than anyone imagined. What will they do at quarterback when Winston is eligible to play? The Birds get good news with the return of Carson Wentz and home-cooking, where they have been practically unbeatable during the Doug Pederson era. Birds get Indy while the Bucs play Monday night at home against Pittsburgh. Beating the Steelers would make me a believer.

49ers over Lions-

The Lions aren't as bad as their opener vs the Jets, but they aren't very good, either. The Niners are just trying to stay with the surging Rams in NFC West. SF goes to Kansas City to take on the hot 2-0 Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium while Detroit hosts an angry New England team that rarely loses two in a row.

Rams over Cardinals-

LA were 13 point favorites and won 34-0 over Arizona. They are streaking 2-0 out of the gate. Arizona is 0-2 and may start rookie Josh Allen instead of Sam Bradford soon. The Rams stay home to face cross-town rivals Chargers while the Cards take on a 1-1 Bears team in the desert.

Cowboys over Giants-

Two bad NFC East teams. Dallas won at home but again didn't look good in doing so. New York has weapons but can't block anyone. the Cowboys, 1-1, are up against it this week at Seattle, where the Seahawks rarely lose, and they are a pissed-off team at 0-2. The G-men continue their brutal early schedule with a game at 0-2 Houston.

Chiefs over Steelers-

KC started hot last season and fizzled. They are again 2-0 and take on San Francisco this week. Pittsburgh is 0-1-1 so far, with in-fighting in the locker room between players and coaches. The Steelers must travel to Tampa to face the surprising Bucs this Monday Night.

Dolphins over Jets-

New York couldn't have been that good as week 1 when they crushed the Lions in Detroit. The Fish start 2-0 and lead the AFC  East, at least for now. The Jets hit the road the next two weeks, first to Cleveland then Jacksonville. Miami gets a chance to go 3-0 while hosting the Raiders.

Chargers over Bills-

LA flew across country and destroyed the Bills. Luckily they got a weak Buffalo squad before it got bitterly cold in upstate New York. he bills look like one of the worst teams in the league-again. LA faces the Rams this week while Buffalo , struggling at 0-2, will struggle more at Minnesota.

Vikings tie Packers-

The second tie in the NFL in as many weeks. Actually a moral win for the Vikes who went to Lambeau Field and tied the Pack. Minnesota hosts weak Buffalo this week while Green Bay goes to Washington.

Saints over Browns-

Wow! Cleveland ties Pittsburgh in week 1 then almost upsets the Saints in New Orleans. Surprised that the 9-point favored Saints struggled so much. Maybe they aren't as good as advertised? New Orleans travels to rival Atlanta this week for a big NFC South game, while the Brownies host the Jets.

Jaguars over Patriots-

The Jags finally defeat New England and start 2-0. They are not only looking for an AFC South crown, but home field advantage in the playoffs. They have the tie-breaker now against the Patriots. The Pats must avoid going 1-2 by beating the Lions in Detroit.

Broncos over Raiders-

Denver goes 2-0, but somehow I don't see them matching-up with division foes Kansas City or the Chargers. The Raiders are getting buried early. Denver has Baltimore on the road, not an easy task, while Oakland travels to Miami.

Bears over Seahawks

Chicago should be 2-0 out of the gate. They are much improved, while Seattle is already two game sin the hole to the Rams. The Bears should take care of business in Arizona this week, while the Seahawks finally go home to play Dallas.

DAILY EAGLES TRIVIA

Who won Coach of the Year 3 times in Philadelphia?

Andy Reid ( 2000, 2002 and 2010).

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

Who set the all-time record for most triples in a season by a Phillies rookie?

Answer: Juan Samuel ( 19 triples in 1984).

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES,EAGLES

- I'm really starting to dislike Kapler. I liked his positive attitude, but hate his lying. He called the frustrating, disappointing Arrieta, the $30 million pitcher who was a total bust this season, a"horse." More like horse's-ass. Arrieta, like Hunter and Santana , were free agent busts. Kapler and Klentak thinks the fans are stupid. The owners needs to clean house on October 1st.

- The Phillies have no heart. Atlanta loses 3 in a row, giving the Phils a shot to get closer before their 7 game match-ups at the end of the year, but the Phillies have proceeded to lose to lowly Miami and New York and remain 6 1/2 games behind, 5 games in the wild card.

The Phillies don't deserve the playoffs. Dropping below .500, after being in 1st place for part of the summer, may push ownership to make changes as the team imploded during the second half of the summer.

- They came back after a 4-0 deficit last night, but only scored in one inning. That's the story all year. No rallies. Play for the 3-run home run.

Better that the team loses big to Atlanta this weekend, get swept in Colorado, come home for the final weekend and limp into the off-season. Watch Klentak and Kapler lie about how the team is "improved." Meanwhile, we know nothing about the young players such as Quinn, Cozens, Altherr, Williams, Kingery and Crawford- are they everyday players/ They don't have a phenom like Acuna Jr. or Soto in their system. They have tons of money to spend on free agents, but will they sign the right free agents- and will a Machado or Harper want to play in a dysfunctional organization like the Phillies?

- After-thoughts on the Eagles..

Hated the broadcast team of Kenny Albert ( a New York guy and the dopey Barber twins- one an ex-Giant and the other an ex- Buccaneer. Why do the Super bowl champs get that kind of a broadcast team?

- Where was first pick tight end Dallas Goedart on Sunday? With the receivers hurt, I thought the Eagles were going to employ a two tight end set, with Ertz and Goedhard? Instead we got guys named Perkins and Aiken.

Speaking of receivers, the browns traded troubled wide-out Josh Gorden to New England for a 5th round draft pick. Talented but tainted by drugs and other issues, Gorden would've upgraded the shaky Bird receiving corps.

Where is Jeremy Maclain/ Could he be any worse? Even a Dez Bryant wouldn't look bad at this point.

- In a  weak NFC East the Birds are 1-1 and tied with Dallas and Washington. With Wentz coming back next week vs Indy, the team needs to go 3-1 going into the huge October 7 rematch with Minnesota.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- So, the Phillies finally won their first series in over a month, again against Miami. Not good enough. As the Braves were losing 2 0f 3 to Washington over the weekend the Phils picked up a game, but with time running out, they need to sweep every game, Thus, they remain 6 1/2 behind Atlanta.

The Braves play 3 vs St. Louis before playing 4 with the Phillies starting on Thursday. Meanwhile the Phillies have 3 with the Mets. Advantage Phillies/ Not so. The Mets always have the Phils' number.Getting the lead down to, let's say 4 1/2 before they meet at least gives Philadelphia show. Take 3 of 4 from Atlanta and suddenly the lead is down to 2 1/2 games going into the final week.

From there it doesn't get easier. $ on the road to a pennant-hungry Rockies team before the last weekend and a trio of games with the Braves. You want to get to within 3 games to make that final weekend meaningful.

Is it time to move Nick Pivetta into the bullpen next season. He strikes-out a ton, and can let loose with his fastball late in games. Maybe this is the season to mature and learn how to pitch. I remember when Hall of Famers Smoltz and Glavine had rocky beginnings before righting the ship and moving on with  stellar careers. Could Pivetta and Valasquez have the same path ahead?

Gabe Kapler never learns. Neither does Matt Klentak, who states things won't change next year regarding analytics. Kapler hits Santana clean-up again on Sunday and loses. he is not a clean-up hitter! Stop already! Hoskins should hit 4th and let him there.

I have tickets for Fan Appreciation Day on September 30, so of course I want the Phillies to offer one last challenge but realistically, I've turned the page on the 2018 edition of the Philadelphia Phillies. It should be a fascinating off-season, starting on Monday October 1.

CHIRPING BIRDS- EAGLES- BUCCANEERS REVIEW

My thoughts on the Eagle loss at Tampa Bay..

- Thank you moron Chip Kelly. Releasing DeSean Jackson in the prime of his career. He has burned the Birds ever since with big plays in Washington, then yesterday in Tampa. First play of the game, 75-yard bomb for an early touchdown. It's what D-Jax does. Why wasn't the Eagles' defense ready for the bomb?

- I have never been a big Jim Schwartz fan,. He's no Jim Johnson. Just because the Eagles won the Super Bowl one forgets all the yards the defense gave up to Tom Brady and the Patriots.

- Jalan Mills isn't as good as the Eagles or he thinks. Too soft. He got burned by Jackson then played way off the rest of the game. Mike Evans, the bigger possession-type receiver, had his way with Ronald Darby most of the game. Clearly, the Bucs wide outs were just better than the Eagle corner backs.Where is Sidney Jones?

- Fat and sassy/ Doesn't seem like the fans are so upset about the loss. Are the coaches and players feeling the same way? I'm upset because it was a winnable game on the schedule, road game or not. No Winston as quarterback, the Birds made Ryan Fitzpatrick look like Joe Montana.

- Where was the pass rush?

- Kicker Jake Elliot needs a wake-up call too? He maybe made the crucial play of last season, kicking a 61-yard game-winner against the Giants, but he continues to miss extra points and shorter field goals. His miss at the end of the first half was big and changed the complexion of the game. I'm surprised the coaches didn't have another kicker in camp as some competition for Elliot. Meanwhile, the other kicker, punter Cameron, had a big game and helped to even the playing field all afternoon.

- What was Coach Pederson thinking at the end, taking his time scoring with a little over 4 minutes left in the game, and the team needing two scores. The Eagles eventually got the ball back in the end- at the 10-yard line , with only 19 seconds left. Seems like Pederson reverted back to his Andy Reid-like clock management problems. Is the fact some of his coaches are there anymore to guide pederson reason to worry?

- Eagle fans made the trip to Florida, but in a bigger stadium, they seemed swallowed by Buc fans

- No adjustments made by Schwartz and the defense in the second half. We have been down this road before, with Schwartz and no adjustments. He doesn't think on the fly that well.

- Vitai filled in for the injured Jason Peters and again offered a lackluster effort. You gotta wonder about Peters, breaking down so often now with injuries.

- Will GM Howie Rossman get on the phone and try to get disgruntled and often-troubled Josh Gordon from the Browns? Without Jeffery this team lacks weapons. Wouldn't Jackson look good in midnight green right now? Why wasn't he signed as a free agent?

- Nick Foles had a brilliant streak during the playoffs but is showing his true colors now. Was it a mistake by Rossman not to trade Foles after the Super Bowl when his value was at it's highest? He did make a nice throw in the corner of the end zone to Agholor in the 4th quarter.

- Yes, it was the head refs first game yesterday. But stop blaming the refs for all the penalties and shoddy play. The Birds, despite their desperate comeback late, lost to an inferior team.

So, the Eagles were 1-1 after their first two games last season. This time the loss was to an NFC team, a factor in tie-breakers for home -field advantage at the end of the season. back home next week, hopefully with Carson Wentz starting, against the Indianapolis Colts ( who upset the Redskins in Washington on Sunday. Andrew Luck is back, and Colts coach Frank Reich knows the Philly offense and their QBs.

The Birds need tow in the next two weeks, go 3-1 and put themselves in good shape to face Minnesota in the NFC Championship Game rematch on October 7.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES NFL

With the 5-4 Phillies comeback win over Miami last night, and the Atlanta loss, the lead in NL East is trimmed to 6 1/2 games. Still too far away. Only saving grace- while the Braves play the Cards this week ( St. Louis is still g=fighting for a wild card spot), Philadelphia plays the Mets. Only problem is that New York has had the Phillies' number for years now.  If the Phils can somehow shave a few more games off the the lead by next weekend, it will makes things interesting.

4 with Atlanta, 4 with Colorado and 3 with Atlanta.

Having Quinn in the line-up changes the whole dynamic. Not only does he play good defense, his speed alone puts pressure on opposing pitchers. Ramos has added an extra professional bat, slow as he may be. Nice to have the athleticism of Altherr in the outfield. Of course, the Phillies ar eplaying the lowly marlins this weekend, so take the wins with a grain of salt.

My 3 NFL picks this weekend..

Eagles -3

Saints -9

Falcons -6

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

It really doesn't matter now, but the Phillies exploded last night at Citizens Bank Park, scoring 14 runs and destroying Miami. Since the braves also won, the Phils stay 7 1/2 games behind Atlanta. The problem now is, not only must the Phillies win, they need help from Washington this weekend then St. Louis next week to beat the Braves. It won't happen.

When the games mattered against the Marlins recently the Phillies came up small. It's a shame, because with 7 games remaining with Atlanta Philadelphia had a shot at winning the division. With the Phillies fading all Atlanta needs to do is basically play .500 ball to cruise into the playoffs.

Aaron Altherr had two home runs, 5 RBIs and 4 hits last night. He has always been athletic and had the talent, both on offense and defense. Too soon to give up on Altherr, who is a smoother outfielder than Herrera, and can do more things.

With the signing of Carlos Santana, Altherr became a member of a crowded outfield and lost his playing time everyday. Will the front office trade Herrera and give Altherr another shot next year?

Washington lost two in a row and should remain in third place. It will be interesting to see what happens with Bryce Harper. Regardless, the Nats will still have a good team with emerging Juan Soto and a growing farm system. Atlanta looks solid for years to come. So the Phillies may need to buy their way into contention. Could they get both Harper and Machado?

The following wouldn't be a bad everyday line-up in 2019:

1B- Hoskins
2B- Kingery
SS- Machado
3B- Franco
LF- Quinn
CF- Altherr/Williams
RF- Harper
C- Ramos

What happens to Odulbel? Santana? Hernandez? All trading chips to get a few more solid starters and a solid closer.  We will write about 2019 and beyond soon, once the season ends. For now, play Kingery at second, maybe Crawford at shortstop, play Altherr and Quinn everyday. Why not/ What do the Phillies have to lose now?

NFL PREVIEW-WEEK 2

Here's a preview of Week 2 in the NFL. But first, a wrap-up of the Thursday Night Game..

Bengals over Ravens-

Cincinnati went 2-0, with QB Andy Dalton throwing 4 touchdowns in the first half alone. Baltimore came off a 47-7 win over Buffalo, going 1-1. They look like another inconsistent team. I still don't like Marvin Lewis, the Bengal coach, but they are off to a good start. Next week, Baltimore plays host to Denver while the undefeated Bengals go on the road the next two weeks, first to Carolina then to Atlanta

Panthers at Falcons-

Carolina (1-0) in a division game against Atlanta ( 0-1). Interesting game. The Falcons can't afford to start off 0-2, losing two NFC games. The Panthers go home next week to face Cincinnati while Atlanta then hosts New Orleans. The NFC South looks to shape up quickly.I like Atlanta to rebound.

Colts at Redskins-

Andrew Luck is back, which gives the Colts a chance. They take on the "Skins at Washington before coming to Philly. The Redskins won in the desert last week, trying to go 2-0 and stay with the Eagles. They have Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay next week at home.As much as I hate to see it, I think the "Skins win their home opener.

Texans at Titans-

Two teams in need of a won to avoid going 0-2. Houston gave New England a battle last week on the road, now they play in Tennessee.I'm still not sold on Mariota and the titans so I'm picking Houston in an upset.

Eagles at Buccaneers-

Philly 31-16. Looks like DeSean Jackson will play, giving the Bucs two dangerous weapons tot terrorize the Birds'secondary. But I can't see the world champions and Foles losing to an average team like Tampa Bay, even in Florida.

Lions at 49ers-

The Lions sucked in all phases of the game on Monday Night against the Jets. now they hit the road to San Francisco to take on an 0-1 Niners squad. Detroit has the Patriots at home next week, so this may bw a must-win in order to avoid 0-3. SF goes to KC and and the Chargers after this, so I see a 49ers win.

Cardinals at Rams-

LA looks great , and not only on paper, and now they have their home opener against a lowly Arizona team. The Rams face cross-town rivals Chargers next week. It could be a let down trap game, but I don't think so. Arizona has the Bears and Seahawks at home the next two weeks, so a win in LA would be big. I see the Rams winning big.

Giants at Cowboys-

Battle of two loser on Sunday night Football. Loser falls to 0-2 and is in early trouble. I'm rooting for the Giants, as they have a  brutal early schedule, plus a home loss for Dallas is always a plus. Will the cowboys show more weapons than Elliot if New York shuts down the running game> I see the Giants winning in Texas.

Chiefs a tSteelers-

Really interesting game, as the Chiefs play their second road game, after beating the chargers in Los Angeles last week. Pittsburgh needs a win, especially after they tied with Cleveland in Week 1. I expect the Steelers tow in but it won't be easy. How will rookie KC QB react in Pittsburgh?

Dolphins at Jets-

One of these teams will be a surprising 2-0, giving New England some early competition in AFC East. Miami has Oakland in Florida next week while the Jets head to Cleveland and could be looking at a 3-0 start if they win this week.

Chargers at Bills-

LA flies across the country, and there's the time difference issue. Could be worse- not cold in Buffalo yet. Chargers don't want a repeat of last year, when they lost big early, came on late, but was too lat o make the playoffs. Tough game to call, as Buffalo is tough to beat at home.

Vikings at Packers-

A real test for Minnesota at Green Bay against Aaron Rodgers. Do the Pack still have what it takes to pull off a win?Always tough to win a tLambeau Field, but there was a reason why Green Bay got down 20-0 to Chicago last week. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Minnesota win The Vikes have the Bills at home next week before a huge two-game road trip to the Rams and the Eagles. The Pack head to Washington next week.

Browns at Saints-

Really expect the Brownies not to lose two weeks in a row? Plus New Orleans can't afford another home loss so early in the season. Saints win and cover

Patriots at Jaguars-

Rematch of AFC Championship Game. Will the Jags get revenge? I think they play well enough to win, in a low-scoring, defensive-minded game.

Raiders at Broncos-

Denver needs to win this division home game before travelling to Baltimore next weekend. The Gruden-led Raiders must avoid an 0-2 start, as they stay on the road to Miami next week.

Seahawks at Bears

Chicago looked unbeatable last Monday Night vs Green Bay before choking to Aaron Rodgers. yet another road game for Seattle before their home opener vs. Denver. Will they be 0-2 even before their home opener? I think they win in Chicago.

IN THE NEWS- FORMER 'SNL' STAR IN HOT WATER OVER DOWN SYNDROME COMMENTS

Another timely topic from Disability Scoop..

While making the rounds to promote his new show, a former "Saturday Night Live" funnyman is taking heat for using the term "Down syndrome' in a derogatory way.

Comedian Norm Macdonald appeared on "The Howard Stern Show" this week to hype his Netflix series "Norm Macdonald has a Show," which is slated to debut on the streaming service this week.

During the interview with Stern, Macdonald attempted to walk back remarks published earlier this week in The Hollywood Reporter in which he appeared to criticize the #MeToo movement. Those comments had led NBC to cancel the comedian's scheduled appearance on Tuesday's episode of "The  Tonight Show" at the last minute.

"You'd have to have Down syndrome, my new word," Macdonald told Stern.

"Down syndrome, good word," Stern interjected.

"You'd have to have Down syndrome to not feel sorry for, of course, #MeToo is what you want for your daughters. You know what I mean. You want that to be the future world, of course. I meet all kinds of women that have terrible stories of what's happened to them. I wasn't talking about the victims," Macdonald continued in an attempt to explain himself.

By interjecting "Down syndrome" into the mea culpa, however, Macdonald stirred up yet another firestorm.

"All people with Down syndrome are valued members of society and deserve to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect," said Sara Weir, president and CEO of the National Down Syndrome Society. "This type of inappropriate language sustains and perpetuates negative stereotypes and further impedes the progress made by our organization and so many others as we strive toward full in clusion of people with disabilities."

The Arc, meanwhile, noted the Macdonald comments were in especially bad taste given that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are seven times more likely than others to be victims of sexual assault.

"What is particularly disturbing about Norm Macdonald's comment is that in his attempt to explain away his insensitivity to the #MeToo movement, he chose to mock a group of people who have a much greater understanding of victimization than he does," said Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc. "So, Mr. Macdonald's comment is doubly offensive and shows his ignorance about the disability community. We welcome the opportunity to educate Mr. Macdonald about the disability rights movement and hope that in the future he will show more respect for millions of people with disabilities, their families, and all victims of sexual assault."

Macdonald has previously been known to use the term "retarded."

CHIRPING BIRDS- WEEK 2 PICK EAGLES- BUCCANEERS

Hoping to make it 21 Eagle games in a row picking the winner, here is my breakdown of Sunday's game with the Buccaneers in Tampa.

Bucs journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick can't have two great games in a row, can he? He led the Buccaneers to a stunning 48-40 victory in New Orleans over the favored Saints last weekend. Tampa has weapons in wide receivers Mike Evens and ex-Eagle DeSean Jackson, but DeJac may not play this week with a concussion. He has torched the Birds since he left the team in the past.

Tampa Bay's defense did give up 40 points to Drew Brees last week. Not a shame. It's their home opener but don't be surprised if most of the stadium is filled with Philly fans.

Nick Foles will start this week, possibly his last game before Carson Wentz returns against Indianapolis next week.

Fitzpatrick will need to deal with the Birds' defensive line, especially Fletcher Cox. Will he have time to find those many weapons?

Meanwhile, can the Eagles get their act together on offense? Jeffery won't be back. Foles needs to elan on the ground game of Ajayi and Clemente, along with tight ends Ertz and Goehard to move the ball. The return game with Sproles could also play a factor, and a defensive score would help. As always, turnovers will be key.

It will be warm and muggy in Florida. The hurricane shouldn't effect the game. Both teams are 1-0. Who needs or wants it more? This should be the easier part of the Eagles' schedule, even without Wentz. Tougher squads such as the  Vikings, Rams and the NFC East are on the horizon. A win over an average Tampa Bay team is needed so we don't regret the loss later down the road. Stockpile the wins now and earn a cushion for later in the season.

Make it Eagles 31 Buccaneers 16.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS

- - The Phillies lost their 5th game in a row last night, getting swept by Washington in the process. The nationals, once buried in 3rd place in NL East, are only 1/2 game behind Philadelphia for second place. Both clubs are hopelessly behind Atlanta in the division. In fact, the Phillies are now only 3 games over .500 and are in real danger of finishing below .500 for the season, which would be a major disappointment.

On August 5th the Phils were in 1st place, 1 1/2 games ahead the Atlanta. Since then they have imploded to the point where they are now a season-high 7 1.2 games behind. Those 7 remaining games with the braves later this month will be totally meaningless soon.

Manager Kapler finally acknowledges "problems" with the team, but also remains unrealistic about his club and their talent. One hopes the owner, John Middleton, is taking a more realistic view of the devastating collapse and will make some serious changes after September 30th.

Granted, this was due to be a bridge year til the free agency bonanza this upcoming off season, when players such as Machado, Harper and Kershaw could be on the market. When the Phillies ended up near or in 1st place for most of the eyar, it led to a  pleasant spring and a hopeful summer and beyond, especially after the Eagles' improbable success. So it was frustrating when the Phillies self-destructed so badly, not winning a single series since early August.

Give the braves credit. They beat up on the rest of the NL East, especially the weak Mets and Marlins. They recently went 6-1 on a west coast swing which included stops in Arizona and San Francisco. They have a young team like the Phillies, but their young players want it more and seem much more talented. Plus they still have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball.

Aaron Nola had his worst outing of the year against the Nats on Wednesday night, only going 5 innings. Despite an overall break-out year, he won't win the Cy Young Award. But he does give the team a true ace on which to build for years.

Miami and New York at home next, but really, who cares? then the final road trip of the season to Atlanta and Colorado before the last home stand weekend of the year against the Braves, a series which could've/should've/e been classic.

More Sixer talk now as the start oft raining camp nears.Did Markelle Fultz fix his broken shot? Is Embbid even stronger/ Does Simmons have a new girlfriend?

Embarrassing that the team doesn't have a general manager ye. Brett Brown willcrack this season under the pressure of doing both jobs as Head Coach and GM.

Flyers talk is heating up too. Singe-game tickets on sale now, so the organizations has players and front office personnel doing interviews with the media. I have tickets fort eh Saturday afternoon face-off with tough Tampa Bay on November 17.

The Flyers should have an exciting blend of young stars, older vets and fun players to watch. But without a No.1 goalie they are cooked. Hopefully Carter Hart becomes that No.1 guy in training camp.

IN THE NEWS- LIVING WITH MOM AND DAD MAY IMPEDE ACCESS TO AUTISM SERVICES

From Disability Scoop...

As more children with autism enter adulthood, new research finds that residing  with family may predict more than anything how much access they have to services.

The findings come from a study published recently in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

Researchers looked at 274 adults with autism all of whom had been diagnosed as children by clinicians at the University of North Carolina Autism Program sometime between 1969 and 2000.

Caregivers for each of the individuals were surveyed to find out how adults on the spectrum used services, what types of unmet needs they had and what obstacles they faced in accessing help within the previous two years.

Just over half of those with autism in the study lived with family members while 10 percent lived independently and the remainder resided in a group home or other type of facility.

Caregivers across the board pointed most frequently to a need for daytime activities and employment supports for adults with autism, the study found. Race and age played some role with white caregivers less likely than others to say they didn't know where to find services and those responsible for older adults reporting a greater need for services.

However, after accounting for various demographic factors, the study found that those who lived with relatives were receiving fewer services, reported a greater need for assistance and had more trouble obtaining it.

"Overall, these results indicate that adults with ASD not only need more services, but that those living outside of supported living facilities experience significant difficulties with access to care. In addition, it seems that those living at the family home are at a disadvantage  for knowing where to find services and report that services are unavailable for their adult with ASD," concluded researchers.

The researchers noted that this trend could have major implications given that an increasing number of adults with autism are living with aging caregivers.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

RIP Phillies until 2019.

Fans never really bought into the team. No ne believed in the crazy analytics of Klentak and Kapler. Even while in 1st place in July the fans still didn't come to watch boring baseball.

When the front office failed to significantly help the team stay on top, by adding Manny Machado or Cole Hamels or Daniel Murphy, they failed. The fans aren't stupid. As Clint Eastwood once said "Don't piss on me and tell me it's raining..."

We can say the current Phillies are a bunch of losers, a bad baseball team that is boring to watch, poor with fundamentals, and have no real direction. We can say the front office is all talk, out of touch, delusional and clueless.

But I worry more about the Phillies future.

There is no Soto or Acuna Jr. in their system.

Do you have hope ownership will lure a significant free agent or two to Philadelphia/ Would a Harper or Machado still want to come to such a dysfunctional organization?

Do you have faith the general manager will make the necessary trades to improve the club?

Do you believe that the manager will learn from his frequent mistakes this season, such as relying too heavily on analytics, mismanaging the bullpen and constantly shuffling his line-up?

Finally, give me a good reason to buy tickets next year?

***********************************************************************

Embarrassing week for the Phillies. First the Legend of the Blowtorch Infield fiasco. Then losing a doubleheader at home to division-rival Washington. The team falls to 6 1/2 games behind Atlanta. They are a mere 1 1/2 games ahead of third place Washington. They are now only four games above .500.  What a meltdown!

What will it take for Klentak and/or Kapler to lose their jobs? They will claim the team "improved", even though Pete Mckanin had the team playing better in the second half of 2018. They will claim it was all a process and a rebuilding year anyway.

Scary to think we still don't know if young players like Kingery, Crawford, Altherr or Williams can play everyday. Franco and Herrera remain enigmas. Only Nola and Hoskins look like stars for years to come.

Nola pitches tonight, going for win 17. The Mets and Marlins come into Philly before the two Brave series and four in Colorado.

Will Middleton do the right thing, hire real baseball people and clean house on October 1st?

Is the only answer to get this franchise out of the doldrums Mike Trout?
