THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- MARCH 17/18

Lord Stanley Tales

On March 18, 1892, Ottawa Rebels player Lord Kilcoursie read a message on behalf of the governor-General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston. It stated that the governor-general thought it would be a "good thing" if there were a challenge or tournament which should be "held every year" crowning the champion hockey team in Canada.

the message added that Lord Stanley would give a cup that should be accepted by the winning team. That cup eventually became the Stanley Cup, which has been presented annually since 1893.
