American Idol discussion post...
Last night gave us more good singers, more singers who wowed me than the weekend before. Here are my thoughts..
- Love the judges and their rapport. Katy is sexy, fun and unpredictable. Lionel is the leader and more mature and focused. He is definitely a mentor and teacher. Luke is still finding his way, but is sort f in the middle between fun-loving prankster with Katy and serious, advice-giving elder like Lionel. They are too nice to the losers, however. If Simon was there he would dispatch the pretenders and wannabes quickly, saving time and being honest and funny.
- My favorite contestant last night was the cowboy, Caleb Lee Hutchinson. I think he will go far. Great voice.
- The first challenger, the red-hair, was just OK in my opinion. Nothing special.
- Johnny White has an inspirational story. Nice how Lionel calmed him down and did an on-the-spot tutor session. But Johnny seems to cry at the drop of a hat. Nice to show emotion but enough is enough.
- The big kid who took a Greyhound to the audition in new York was good, but how far will he go? He is tall and different, and different is good.
- The twins were fun but what happens when they are split-up? I can see them becoming popular down the road as a duo, but not on American Idol alone.
- The teacher with the Down syndrome friend was touching, and i give her credit for being a champion for the "people who don't fit". I just can't see her winning. She will probably hand around for a while, but what happens when the emotional-factor of her weight and the friend wear off and it comes down to her ability to sing?
- The cowgirl yodeler was cute, but Lionel was right- who will be her audience? She may have her niche in country music, but winning a competition like Idol, where she will have to sing all types of music? I don't think she even gets out of the early rounds.
- Ricky Manning was good but seems too slick and show bizzy to me. So does the girl whose father wrote "Great Balls of Fire" and 'Yakkity Yak". She has it all- looks the voice, seems composed and mature. but there's something lacking i can't quite put my finger on yet. Still, I can see her being alive for a long time.
- The nanny who seems like "an old soul" ( she even looks older than 17) may hang around, but was she just imitating Adele? She reminds me of former contestant Crystal Bowersox, who had the voice and that "old-soul" feeling, but didn't ultimately win.
- The "Change is Gonna Come" singer near the end wasn't as good as what the judges had thought. He kind of screamed the lyrics. not impressed.
The auditions continue tonight. They are growing tiresome now. Can't wait for Hollywood Week to start soon. The best is when the live shows begin and the public voting starts.
