CHIRPING BIRDS-FREE AGENCY TALK

* This morning the Birds re-signed linebacker Nigel Bradham to a five-year deal.  GM Howie Rossman is a true genius. Bradham was the key re-signing, if my option. He played well last season, and with the dept at linebacker already shaky, it was a must to bring Bradham back.

Looks like LB Mychal Kendricks will be gone. The Birds picked up another LB yesterday when they signed Donny Nelson to a contract. Hopefully Jordan Hicks comes back strong form an injury. I also think linebacker will be a focus in the draft as well.

* Sorry to see Brent Celek go. He was the longest-tenured player in Philly sports, spending 11 years with the Eagles. Celek always played hard. He wants to still play, so we will see if he goes out on top or not.

Can't keep everyone. Trey Burton also left, inking a deal with the bears. Burton was disappointed the Birds didn't at least make him an offer. Clearly, they thought he wanted too much money. Even though he was a hell of a player in his limited playing time, Rossman had to feel they couldn't give him the kind of cash that Burton was worth on the market.

* Signing DT Haloti Ngata was big, in more ways than one. He will be good as an early-down, run-stuffer, and should stay fresh in the defensive line rotation. Joe Douglas knows him well after spending nine years with Baltimore, where Douglas was an executive.

Imagine the defensive line of Ngata, possibly Chris Long, Cox, Jurrigans, Barnett and Bennett. Gotta put fear in opposing quarterbacks.

* We will see where Vinny Curry and Jason Peters end up. We may see action after June 1 as well. Going into training camp we should also have a better idea on Carson Wentz' health and the status of Nick Foles.

It's nice to know that Foles is most likely to stay. Even if Wentz isn't ready on Opening Day, nice to know that Foles will be the QB in those key early season games.

The teams that need a starting quarterback have diminished since Arizona singed Sam Bradford. The Cardinals were a possible destination for Foles. Why Arizona signed Bradford, who knows? Bradford is one lucky guy. he was made approx. $129 million over his often-injured career.

Minnesota got their QB by inking Kirk Cousins to a big deal. Should be a really interesting  first game of the season, when the Vikings invade the Linc on Thursday Night Football in September ( supposedly). The Vikes will seek revenge for their playoff loss, while the eagles hoist their world championship banner and look to defend their title.

I always thought that Cousins was an overrated guy. When the pressure is on he turtles-up. He good but not great. I guess Minnesota had to do something, with Bradford heading to Arizona, Keesum going to Denver and Bridgewater reportedly ready to sign with the Jets. Cousins will have loads of weapons to play with, and one of the league's best defenses behind his back. But will Cousins take the next step to elite quarterback status?

More moves and news surely to come before the 4 p.m. deadline. Stay tuned.
