* I ended up watching the Oscars after all. At first I wasn't going to watch- too much politics and the films sucked this year. but here are my impressions:
- Jimmy Kimmel did a better job this year then last. He was funny and insightful yet not preachy as host. No long and boring musical numbers. He did was he was supposed to do and got off stage. I like billy Crystal as an Oscar host, but Kimmel was OK.
- No mix-ups with the envelopes. Nice touch to have Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announce Best Picture at the end, giving them a second chance after last year's fiasco.
- Kobe Bryant won an Academy Award. He wrote a short animated movie called "Dear Basketball" which won. Cool to see the celebrities in the audience taking pictures of Kobe and looking star-struck themselves.
- Not as many political comments and tirades as expected. Of course, Meryl Streep didn't get on stage.
- E! channel did their usual lousy job of covering the Red Carpet festivities. A lot of white and pale gowns on display last night. After the female movie stars wore black for most of the awards season out of protest, it was refreshing to see brightness and color.
- Jennifer Lawrence was the hottest star, at least in my opinion.
- Most of the films sucked this year.Shape of Water won Best Picture, a movie which included a woman having sex with a fish. And that's worthy of Best Picture?
- My one sure bet winner did win- Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour.
- Where were familiar faces such as Hanks, Hoffman and Nicholson? Most of the faces seen on the red carpet are new. Definitely a changing of the guard in Hollywood. And, after years of few minorities in movies, it seemed like every celebrity strolling down the red carpet last evening was a minority. Just saying....

Saw an old movie on Saturday night called Julie/Julia, starring Meryl Streep as chef Julia Child and the cute, perky Amy Adams. It was a cute movie, funny in spots, and Streep was dead-on with the Child impersonation.
The movie was written and directed by Nora Ephron, who also wrote Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry met Sally... and You've Got Mail.
It was about a woman from Brooklyn who wrote a blog for a year, doing recipes from Child's classic book, 'The Joy of French Cooking." I was disappointed that the Adams character and Child never actually met at the end, after a big build-up all during the film. The closest was Adams visiting Childs' old set at the Smithsonian Institute.
I gave the movie two stars out of four.

There's a really annoying new TV commercial around now from Xfinity , a know-it-all little girl walking into their store with her mother and suddenly breaking into a dance. Stupid, plus they are playing it to death.
