IDOL THOUGHTS-MONDAY NIGHT

Monday was the fourth night of auditions, rambling everywhere from Los Angeles to Nashville and back to New York City. The singers weren't as strong as Sunday night. There were most inspiring and heartbreaking stories, ans the usual clunkers and divas. Here are my thoughts...

* The judges are relaxing more and have a good rapport with each other. Hollywood Week and the live shows will be interesting. Luke seemed more at ease in his familiar territory of Nashville. Lionel continues to be the mentor, the leader and drops names every show. Last night it was Mariah Carey and Prince.Katy is still fun and sassy. All are too nice but are proving to be wise in looking for not just a great voice, but the "it" factor in the next American Idol.

* One of the funniest moments came when a contestant brought a dog along. Cute, anything to sway and schmooze the judges. Only problem was that while the contestant was singing ( which wasn't memorable at all)the canine took  crap and peed numerous times. Stage hands rushed on-stage afterwards, armed with Lysol and paper towels.

* A strong contestant was ironically born on the first day that Idol was ever on, and she just made the age cut -15- by one day. Destiny?

* One unlucky guy asked Luke to tune his guitar for him. Katy remarked "That will be $50,000." Needless to say, he won't be going to Hollywood.

* A real goat farmer made the cut. So did  cute singer who sang Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love."

* Something to watch in Hollywood is a friendly (?) family feud between sisters. Both sing at the Nashville airport. Older sis played guitar and wasn't supposed to audition, just accompany her younger sibling. but the judges were intrigued by her. She ended up singing and earned a Golden Ticket. The younger sis, who was supposed to be the only person singing, just barely made it as well. And she didn't look too pleased with the results.

* A touching story was near the end of a  28-year-old guy who adopted his sister's baby to keep the little boy from going into the "system" as the uncle had when he was a child. The guy ended up singing pretty well, but cried a lot, the second male overly emotional  and weepy.

* A singer-songwriter named Daniel Etheridge was one of my favorites. He is part-Korean and likes to sing country music, which is unique. He did an original song on guitar, and Lionel compared him to Jim Croce, so he might be someone to watch.

*  A couple of divas were bounced off, one a vocal coach who could sing but without much emotion. The other was another female who compared herself to Demi Lovetto and a few other contemporary artists. She was clearly full of herself, even after when she  bitterly whined to the cameras, "I don't understand why the judges didn't get me."

* One contestant won a trip to Hollywood merely by singing Happy Birthday to Katy. The judges gave her gifts in one segment, giving her puppies and balloons.

The auditions finally end next Sunday. Hollywood Week begins next Monday. Can't wait.
