More auditions last night on Idol. Here are my comments..
- No singer has completely wowed me yet over the first two nights. It seems the male vocalists are stronger so far than the female singers.
- Katy Perry is cute, sexy and fun to watch. You never know what she is going to say or do.
Lionel Richie is clearly the leader and wiser judge. He is the oldest and kind of reigns in the other two when they get off focus. Still, he is fun and seems genuine. He is into giving the contestants hugs, whether it's to congratulate or to console. I remember that Richie was the mentor of my of my favorites, Richard Marx, so being a teacher/judge is right up his alley.
Luke Bryan still hasn't carved out his niche. Is he the nice one? Critical? Harsh? He seems laid-back and plays off the others well. And maybe that's his style and plan, to counter-punch the cerebral Richie and the unpredictable Perry and go with the flow.
As the singers evolve with time, it will be interesting to also watch the how the judges grow.
- The back stories were good last night, especially the last two. One was a guy who had lost a ton of weight ( he had tried out for Idol in 2010). He got a Golden Ticket. Another was a paraplegic guy and his girlfriend, who also earned a trip to Hollywood. Their story and his performance of Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely?" brought Katy to tears.
He will be interesting to watch. Not sure if he was trying to imitate Wonder or if he just sounds like Wonder. If he gets to the phase where viewers vote, will he get the sympathy vote? I'm sure the judges will try not to let the sentimental factor swayed their judgement if he is a good singer or not.
Whatever happens, I give the guy credit. He has the guts to walk on-stage with braces and crutches. He rehabbed to the point where he didn't use a wheelchair.
- More craziness, with Katy flirting with a few guys, and yet another Ukrainian singer getting turned down.
- Next Sunday the auditions continue. It's a fun time, seeing the best and worst singers try out. The real competitions will start in a few weeks during holly wood Week, then Idol goes live when they start at 24 and work their way down.
- Ryan Seacrest is a good host, as long as he doesn't make it all about himself, which I was afraid he was doing during the opening segment last night. He quickly slunk in the background as the show went on, which is a good thing.
