PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, SIXERS, BASEBALL PLAYOFFS PENN STATE, EAGLES

* The Flyers outlasted the Edmonton Oilers yesterday afternoon, 2-1 at the Wells Fargo Center. They shut-down speedy center Connor McDavid with a tight defensive effort. The underrated Wayne Simmonds got the game winner with approx, 2 minutes left in the third period.

So, the Flyers are 4-2 in the early going, plaiyng the final game of their home stand on Tuesday vs the Anaheim Ducks.

* Meanwhile, the other occupant of the Center, the Sixers, were north of the border to play in Toronto against the Raptors. They were playing without Joel Embiid, since it was the second of back-to-back games.

In embarrassing fashion, Philly lost big time- by 34 points- to Toronto. The  76'ers open this much- anticipated season 0-3, the fourth straight year they have gotten out of the gate 0-3. This was supposed to be a different season, a playoff season, when the young talent would blossom.

When Embiid has played, he hasn't played well. Ben Simmons got his third double-double in three games. But rookie guard Markelle Fultz seems lost and injured, bricking one attempted free throw, which suggests that his shoulder is hurting.

The Sixers' medical staff has been so over-protective of Embiid and Simmons ; why not rest Fultz and let him heal/ He is obviously hurting. He is a big part of their future. Yet they are running him out there when Fultz is not at full-strength.

It doesn't get any easier, with another road game at Detroit on Monday.

The Astros returned to Houston Friday night, down 3-2 in the American League Championship Series, and swept both games over the Yankees to advance to their first World Series in 12 years.

Don't weep for New York. They are a year ahead of their rebuilding process. This season was a bonus, giving the Baby Bombers experience and a taste of winning. Young stars Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez shined brightly, Judge robbing an Astro of a home run last night by reaching over the low right field wall and pulling back a potential long ball.

The Yankees-Dodgers World Series reunion will have to wait for another year, but it's coming, sooner than later. Both vaunted franchises have young talent, both in the majors and in their farm systems.

Houston is riding on talent, a young and fun group, and emotion, from the recent floods in Houston.
After running away with AL West, the Astros earned and deserved their trip to the Fall Classic, where a rested LA Dodgers team awaits.

I think the Dodgers will win but I will be rooting for the Astros to win their first world title. They have come so close before, losing to the Phillies in 1980, the Mets in the 80s and the White Sox 12 years ago.

Game 1 in the series begins Tuesday night in Los Angeles, where temperatures are expected to reach into the mid-90s.

Penn State won a  hug game at home last night, beating Michigan in a "white-out" game, where all Nittany Lions fans were encouraged to wear white.  By crushing the Wolverines, Penn State remains No. 2 in the country and solidifies its position as a candidate in the 4-team post-season for the NCAA championship.

Also in football, the Eagles sit back ( again) and watch weekend pro football. They play at the Linc on Monday night against the Redskins.

Today the Birds will be rooting for San Francisco to beat Dallas ( a possibility, even for an 0-6 'Niners team), and for Seattle to come east and take care of the Giants.

It seems like the Eagles haven't played in years. Next week they get back to a somewhat normal schedule with a 1:00 home game vs. the 40'ers.
