PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- BASEBALL PLAYOFFS, SIXERS, EAGLES, PHILLIES

* Houston beat the Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Championship series last night, 2-1 The Astros have a good, young team, capable of beating clubs in many ways. They hit ( Houston had the highest batting average in the AL), and as evidence in Game 1, they can pitch. Overall, they are a better team than New York.

The Yanks hit home runs, but also strike out a lot. The Baby Bombers may come back to win the series ( they need to split in Houston) but realistically they are a year away from deep contention.

The Dodgers and Cubs begin their National League Championship series tonight in Los Angeles. The Dodgers are the rested team. But don't count out Chicago. They are experienced and know how to win.  LA should beat the Cubbies and move on to the World Series. I predicted that the Dodgers would be champs back in spring training and I'm sticking to it.

* The Sixers clobbered the Heat ;last night in Kansas City, wrapping up their exhibition season They open regular season play on Wednesday at Washington. The Flyers open their home season tonight against Washignton. And the Eagles next game is a week form Monday night against you guessed it, Washington.

Are we going to our our breath each time Joel Embiid falls? He took a tumble last night, stayed down for a few seconds, and every bar in the Delaware Valley had to be groaning. It will be nice when the 76'ers are finally healthy, together on the court and the fans won't have to get angina each time they see one of the players go down.

We think the worst, so geared for the disappointing negative in our sports. But things are looking up, thanks to the Eagles.

* Nice to kick back and watch football this weekend, as the Eagles have a victory in their back pocket and rest. The Redskins should beat the 49'ers and go 3-2, setting up a big showdown at the Linc on October 23. The Giants should lose in Denver and fall to 0-6. The Cowboys are 2-3 and in their bye week.

With three home games in a row ahead, the Birds have their destiny in their own hands. I said 10-6 before the season began. No reason why they can't do 12 or 13 wins now.  That road game in December at New York may not mean anything. Maybe even the Christmas night game in Philly against Oakland may not mean as much.

No letdown. The Birds needs to come out and take control of Washington next Monday night. Another division game, if they win they sweep the 'Skins and capture another tie-breaker.  San Francisco should be a victory, which will set up a big game against Denver. That Bronco game should be flexed to Sunday night.

The following game is at Dallas after a bye week. The Cowboys won't have Elliot, who will still be serving out his suspension.Still, the Cowboys will be desperate so that will be a dangerous game for Philly.

That's down the road. For now, fans should relax and bask in the glow of being one of the best teams in the NFL.

* Good to see Larry Bowa will be staying with the Phillies. Not as a bench coach, but as a senior adviser to the general manager. Bowa knows baseball and young talent.  I'll miss him not being in the dugout, but Bowa belongs with the Phillies organization.

The coaches are all free agents, which is good. The new manager will bring in his own staff. The pitching coach especially needed to go. When Pete Mackanin left, so did his staff. But the one guy I wanted to keep was Bowa. I like his loyalty and his fiery personality. Hopefully Matt Klentak listens to his advice.
