PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES.
- Big win by the Phillies last night, overcoming a 2-1 deficit going into the 9th inning and beating the Marlins 5-2. It was the first time the team came back from being behind going into the 9th inning all season. Mikail Franco hit the first walk-off home run of his career, a moonshot barely clearing the left field fence at Citizens Bank Park.
With the victory, the Phils earned their 60th win of the season, staying 1/2 game ahead of Atlanta, 5 games ahead of Washington. It's Alumni Weekend, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 2008 World Championship team. Also, Pat Gillick and the late Roy Halliday will be inducted onto the Phillies Wall of Fame. The Braves are still in New Tork, while the Nationals continue to host the Reds.
Looking ahead, while the Phils go to Arizona and San Diego next week, the Braves travel to Washington for a huge 4-game series, including a doubleheader on Tuesday. Next weekend, while the Phillies face the last-place Padres, Atlanta hosts Cincinnati while the Nats go to Wrigley Field to take on the Cubs.
- Love the Phillies' powder blue uniforms they have been wearing on home Thursdays. Along with the Eagles' Kelly green unis, hope they never fade away.
- Philly sports fans should mark down the date Sunday, October 7. The Eagles play the Vikings in an NFC Championship rematch at 4:25 (I'll be there). Game 3 of the National League Divisional Series is at 8:00. Could the Phillies be playing across the street from the Birds? I was at Eagles-Giants at 1::00 at the Linc before the Phillies faced the Yankees at Citizens Bank Park in the World Series later that night. Didn't have baseball tickets but I'll always remember the buzz and excitement that day in South Philly.
- Valasquez and Nola round-out the Miami series this weekend, with Arrieta opening the 3-game set in Arizona.
