PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES, SIXERS

- Great speech by new Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins on Saturday night, Coming on stage like The Wolverine brought back memories. Think about all the great Philly sports speeches over the years; The Chase Utley "F-Bomb" speech, the Jason Kelcie dressed as a Mummer speech on the Art Museum steps after the championship parade. And now B-Dawk's emotional, passionate speech.

- What a weekend for Philadelphia sports fans! A blend of the old and the new. From Hall of Fame and Wall of Fame ceremonies. to both the Eagles and Phillies current teams, it was a weekend to remember.

- Good thing former Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel never got a job as a Phillies broadcaster, He never shuts up, God love him. Nice guy but annoying after a while.

- With 40,000 fans in the Linc to watch the Eagles' open practice, wasn't it odd that QB Nick Foles had a "maintenance day?"
Predictably, tons of
- Nice to see Jayson Werth get a round of cheers before the game. A villain no more. I never did blame him for taking the crazy cash offered by Washington and bolting. He and his family set for the rest of their lives. Werth showed a sense of humor  by climbing on the Phantic's hot dog machine and shooting wieners into the crowd.

- Old heads Art Mahaffey and Tony Taylor joined Alumni Weekend. Interesting that Pete Mackanin was there. He got a nice hand, but not as rousing as his finale game last September.

- Good crowd for a hot and humid Sunday afternoon, around 35,000. Hopefully attendance picks up the longer the team stays in contention.

- Noticed Pat Burrell sitting behind Roy Halliday's widow Saturday night. Just saying..

- Kudos to Halliday's widow and kids for being at the ceremony and especially for her speech. Brave and beautiful woman!

- So who will go om the Phillies Wall of Fame first next summer? Utley? Howard? Rollins? Victorino? Or someone else?

- Got Street & Smith's Pro Football preview . They are picking the Rams over the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Clueless. I can see the Steelers getting there. I think the Patriots' time has come and gone. But the Rams are still too young and the Eagles are still too good. Home field advantage in the playoffs will be key. Anyway, the preview is a good read. The Birds look to be the first team since 2004 to repeat as NFC East champions. Who is going to knock them off?

- Sorry, not a fan of Mike Schmidt in the broadcast booth. He's pretty dry and without much humor. Not as insightful. I can see why he hasn't been a hitting coach or manager. Great player, poor communicator.

- Phillies sweep 4-game series for the 3rd time this season. First time that has happened since 2011. They did what they had to do- beat up on lesser teams that suck. The Phils are 15 games over .500, 1 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta in NL East. The Braves play the Nationals in a key divisional series, while the Phillies head west to face the first play Diamondbacks and the last place Padres. The Fightins' have now won 6 in a row.

- Doug Pederson and Howie Rossman earn contract extensions over the weekend. Well-deserved. Nice to know the brain-trust will be together thru 2022. Shouldn't the Phillies extend Hoskins and Nola too?

- Sixers' opening line for upcoming season: 54 1/2 wins. I'll take the under.

- Who cares about the Yankees? They got humiliated in Boston this weekend. 9 1/2 games out of first place. They should make the wild card but a one-game playoff, even in New York, is risky. Wouldn't it be great if the surprising Oakland A's beat them?

It sucks to be a New York sports fan this morning. Yanks get embarrassed to hated rival. Mets stink. Rangers and Knicks stink. Jets and Giants are awful. No hope in the Big Apple. Meanwhile in Philly..it's the best of times!!

- Carson Wentz, after starting training camp in a blaze, has not participated in 11-on-11 drills for a while. Is it a setback or are the Eagles doctors just bring cautious?

- Along with all the hoopla of festivities over the memorable weekend, the Birds quietly signed safety Corey Graham. Graham will add experience as the third safety behind Jenkins and McCloud.

- Tears of joy for Dawkins. Tears of sadness for Halliday. Meanwhile the needle points upward for all of our Philadelphia sports teams. Could Sunday, October be another special sports day in Philly. The Eagles-Vikings NFC Championship Game rematch at the Linc at 4:25 followed by Game 3 of the national League Division Series at 8:00 at Citizens Bank Park. The Flyers start their season that week, with the Sixers not far behind. Who can ask for more?
