- I was there for perhaps the biggest win of the Phillies season o far, a 7-4 lashing of the best team in baseball, the Boston Red Sox, on Wednesday night. Kudos to Justin Bour, Kingery, Ramos, Neris and others for the big win. It was much needed- it split the season series vs Boston and kept pace with winning Atlanta, still 2 games behind the Braves.
-Tons of Red Sox fans there. Attendance was a little over 35,000. Not bad, but with the Red Sox in town, on a warm August night, and the pennant race heating up, no sell-out?The Boston fans around me were pretty courteous. The yelling got really bad in the bottom of the 8th, with the Phils leading by 3 runs and the bases loaded with no outs . The "Let's Go Red Sox" chants were out-drowned by Philly fans. It was also fun to see the shell-shocked faces on the Boston fans as they couldn't believe or accept losing to the Phillies.
- With great performances by newcomers Bour and Ramos hopefully they will become regulars soon. I've seen enough of him and his $20 million contract.
- The was a media softball game before the game, between Radio/Print and TV. Radio won, with miss Philadelphia ( who played second base) winning Most Valuable Player. I didn't know many personalities, only a few WIP Sports radio guys and both Matt O'Donnell and Bob Brooks from 6ActionNews. It was PAL Night at the Phillies, so it was a worthwhile cause.
- With seasoned pros like Ramos and Bour in the line-up they didn't take as many pitches, so the game seemed faster ( even though it was over 3 hours in length). More entertaining for fans. Maybe Kapler is getting the message, a she stated after the game last night that "we didn't win on walks and home runs..we had doubles and triples.'
- The Eagles play their second pre-season game tonight at New England. More interesting than the game, will Tom Brady finally shake Nick Foles' hand after wards? Like a sore loser, he completely ignored the Super Bowl MVP and stomped to the ;locker room. Will tonight be any different?
- Key pitching match-ups this weekend vs the Mets- Nola vs Synderguard on Friday; Arrieta vs deGrome on Saturday night.Pivetta will probably go Sunday night vs New York in Williamsport.
- With the victory, the Phils now have 66 wins and 39 home wins- they exact same totals they had all of last season. Winning 90 games, usually a benchmark for a playoff spot, is still up in the air. Would a win total in the 80s be enough?
Don't look now but the Cardinals, always a dangerous team, are only a game behind Philadelphia in the wild card race.St. Louis has won 8 games in a row.
