PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

- Who would ever believe the Phillies would score more than the Eagles on the same day? Aaron Nola was brilliant Thursday afternoon, as the Phillies salvaged a game in Washington. Despite blowing two games, the Nationals only gained a game on the Phil. Atlanta keeps winning, so the Phillies stay 3 games behind the braves in NL East.

- Herrera crushed a big 2-run homer in the 7th inning against Max Scherzer, saving his season as well. Will be interesting in Toronto with the designated hitter in play. Either use Hoskins or Santana in the DH role. An outfield of Quinn, Herrera and Williams isn't bad, both offensively and defensively.

- Justin Bour is out with a muscle strain but hopefully catcher Wilson Ramos is back tonight.

- Give the team credit for not laying down vs Scherzer and keeping their hopes alive. They are 1 game behind the 3 wild card teams ahead of them- St. Louis, Colorado and Milwaukee.

- Pre-season or not, the Eagles again looked awful , especially on offense. Foles looked shaky and Vatai again stunk on the offensive line. True, their weapons are hurt ( Jeffries, Ajayi, Agholar).Smallwood looked good at RB but former Redskin Jones continues to fumble. The defense looked good in the weird 5-0 loss, although the Browns did break a few long runs early. The kicker missed a 33-yard field goal, which was his MO last season ( make a 61-yarder, miss short FGs and 4 extra points).

I'm glad Coach Pederson was angry at halftime over the way the Birds played, dropping to 0-3 in the pre-season.Unlike Kapler, Pederson shows emotion and keeps it real. He doesn't want the Eagles to live off last year, starting the season fat and sassy and unmotivated. Pederson must be frustrated and a little worried about the hunger of the club.

Wentz looked agile during pre-game warm-ups and many experts, including Ray Didinger, now feel he will start the opener against the Falcons. He must be 100% to play, especially behind that offensive line now.  My gut feeling is, especially after seeing the way Foles is playing, that Wentz plays and gives the team and fans an emotional lift on September 6.

The meaningless final pre-season game is vs the Jets next Thursday night.
