PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

- It didn't matter that the Phillies split their doubleheader with the Mets yesterday and actually gained a 1/2 game in the standings. What mattered was the embarrassing 24-4 loss to New York in Game 1. And it wasn't just the score, it was the way it happened.

First, despite 4 solo homers, the team played like dogs, committing 4 errors. Their fundamentals and defense have been poor all season. Then Manager Gabe Kapler gives up- in the 5th inning- and allows regular position players Quinn and Kingery, to pitch the final few innings. Quinn has had shoulder problems in the past yet was asked to throw 42 pitches. Kingery soft-tossed the ball to the plate, like a softball game ( only overhand) and sent his own little message- "I really don't want to do this it was humiliating to the organization and city as well as a laugihng stock to baseball. Owner John Middleton should feel shame. Giving up should be a reason to fire Kapler's ass immediately. Hopefully he is being called in the carpet today.

What message does that say to the young players?  A 10-run deficit with several innings to play has been overcome in the past. Kapler says the fans were entertained by the game. Mets fans were laughing Good thing the game wa son Facebook- not as many fans saw it.

What a disgrace!

He's not aggressive enough, sitting back and waiting for three-run homers. He's not honest enough, making lame excuses for his lazy players. He's not honest enough to admit his stupid analytic blunders. He knows his boss, clueless Klentak will back whatever he says or does.  He's not a fighter or a blue-collar guy. He's not Philadelphia

Hopefully the writers are all over Kapler's ass today. No matter what he does from now on, I'll never forgive him for giving up. I'm embarrassed to be a Phillies fan today.

Ranger Saurez is a joke too. He is the best they have in the farm system to fill in? The Mets stink and they score 30 runs in two games? They are still in the Phillies' heads. Now the club faces Syndergaard and deGrome back-to-back.

- It was only a pre-season game, but the Eagles played lousy against the Patriots last night. Foles stunk and he hurt his shoulder. Will that accelerate the return of Wentz?

Even before last night I thought the Eagles would go 11-5 this season. The schedule is tougher, other teams will be gunning for the world champion birds, and will the Eagles be full of themselves? No matter that guys like Wentz, peters and Sproles will be extra motivated, shouldn't there be a natural let-down after winning it all?

The Birds play the Browns next week in an important outing before the really meaningless last pre-season contest. Right now, the team isn't ready for Opening Night on September 6 vs the Falcons.
