PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- When the Phillies hired young Gabe Kapler I expected him to be an aggressive, dynamic manager, not an old fart Earl Weaver-type clone who sits back and waits for 3-run homers. I expected the Phillies to play like the Padres did this weekend. I'm disappointed.

- Kapler says that Santana is having "a very good year." What???? He stinks! Kapler is trying to protect his analytically clueless boss, Klentak.

- Kingery needs to be sent down, as I have blogged before. He is over-matched and needs to get his swing right before coming back in September. Instead they send down Eflin til Thursday, costing the kid $20,000. I hope Eflin doesn't forget it. The Phillies have so much friggin' money yet are still cheap. Middleton is a fraud and Klentak is clueless.

- As I predicted, Cole Hamels has helped the Cubs ( including last night- 7 innings, 1 run, 9 strike-outs). The Phillies blew it by not trading for Hamels. He would've helped this season and beyond  and brought excitement t the fans. What did they have to lose? And Chicago didn't give up much for Cole. Another bad Klentak move.

- I would've kept Freddie Galvis, if only for his defense. I'm glad it stuck it to the Phillies this weekend.  Analytics is why Galvis isn't with the Phils. He doesn't get on base enough, but his defense saves runs and he was a leader in the clubhouse. Big mistake.

- Franco got 2 hits Sunday but also didn't hustle on offense and defense. He didn't bust it out of the box on a liner off the left field wall and got thrown out at second base by a wide margin. Then defensively, he embarrassingly threw a ball away to get a Padre runner at the plate. He has stepped up his game recently but sometimes reverts back to boneheaded, lazy Franco.

- Sloppy, embarrassing game and weekend by Phillies. Mental mistakes shouldn't be happening this time of the year against last place Padres. San Diego runs wild on bases, stealing 6 bags yesterday, kicking the Phillies' ass.

- What's the sense of getting Justin Bour if you're not going to use him? He got a meaningless pinch-hit single in the 9th with two outs and the team down 6 runs. Why is Santana playing?

- Again, Santana hits clean-up and is not hitting. Hoskins hits second and is in a 1-for-27 slump. No wonder the club isn't scoring runs. No rallies, no bunts, no runners in motion, no hit-and-run, no steals. Why isn't the speed of Herrera/Quinn hitting lead-off?

-You want to believe in the Phillies. They play competitively against  good teams like the Yanks, Red Sox and Dodgers, yet lose 2 of 3 to lowly San Diego. They suck on the road because they don't play small ball. They win at home because they walk and hit homers at bandbox Citizens Bank Park.

Atlanta wins and is percentage points ahead of Philadelphia now. The Braves play a doubleheader vs Miami today as the Phillies have off and get ready to face the powerful Red Sox Tuesday and Wednesday. With pitchers like deGrome, Synderguard and Scherzer due to face the Phils soon, things won't get any easier. They had a chance to pad their lead against average Padre pitching. Instead, the Phils may have dug themselves a hole they might not be able to get out of.
