PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- The Phillies disappointed again Friday night, losing to Toronto after a big win in Washington on Thursday afternoon. They had plenty of chances to score but once again couldn't get the clutch hit they needed. If the Phils don't hit home runs they don't win. Plain and simple.

Speed kills. I would love to see Roman Quinn and Scott Kingery at the top of the line-up next season. They would put tremendous pressure on opposing pitchers. Hernandez and Herrera are solid players but are they championship players? Or is it time to shop them and see what they are worth?

The Braves finally lost last night, so Philadelphia remains 3 games back of Atlanta. Washington lost too to the Mets. They are dreading water and won't challenge for the division.

- The Phils need to win the next two Blue Jay games, which  would set them up for a big week of home games. The Nationals come in- including a Nola vs. Scherzer rematch on Tuesday night- and then the cubs ( with Cole Hamels scheduled to pitch next Sunday). The September stretch begins, a situation new to the Phillies after 7 years. Meaningful baseball is what we wanted. Hopefully the club hangs in there and makes those 7 late September games against Atlanta mean something.

- I sound like a broken record, but I'm done with Carlos Santana. My wish is the front office unloads his big contract  during the off-season. Return Hoskins to first base, rework the outfield, after you sign Bryce Harper and trade Odulbel Herrera. He has been a bust, no matter what nonsense Kapler or Klentak say. Arrieta has been average. So I wouldn't say last year's free agent signings have been successful. I would also say getting Wilson Ramos was a plus at the trade deadline, but not getting Cole Hamels was a negative. So, GM Matt Klentak, what have you done?
