PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES
- The Birds won a meaningless pre-season game last night at the Linc. How did Penn State ever win a game with Christian Hackenberg at QB?
- The OT Jordan Mailata is playing great and should make the team. Experts are saying the former Aussie rugby player will not only eventually be a starter but will be an All-Pro in time.
- Cheers to Brent Celek who is retiring. He spent all 11 seasons with the Eagles. He rarely missed a game, always played hard, and I'm glad he finally got a ring before he retired. Hopefully he stays in football. He was always involved with the community, fan-friendly and even ran a restaurant in town. Will he ever make the Eagles Wall of Fame?
- Today Coach Doug Pederson will know who starts at quarterback next week in the opener. He claims he won't announce the starter until 90 minutes before next Thursday night's game against the Falcons, but I'm sure his decision will leak sometime over the weekend. I say Wentz, who looked good again during pre-game work-outs, will start.
- My Eagles and NFL preview will be in the blog next week. I;m still going to Atlantic City tomorrow and plan on placing a wager on the Birds. Depending on the odds, I'm looking into the over/under for the season win total , odds on Philly winning the Super Bowl again ( currently at 7-1), and the Sixers' over/under win total. It's just great to have the ability to legally bet on sports now locally. Can't wait until Pennsylvania joins the action.
- The Phillies were off last night, before starting a huge weekend series against the Cubs tonight. They gained a 1/2 game in the standings as the braves lost to the visiting Cubbies. The Phils need to hang tough this weekend against Chicago, while Atlanta stays home with the Pirates. Next week the Phillies play the Marlins and Mets, while the braves face the Red Sox and Diamondbacks. Advantage Phillies, who could gain ground as their 7 games head-to-head with the Braves approaches at the end of September.
- The Yankees, too far in back of Boston now but solid in the wild card chase, acquired outfielder Andrew McCuthen from the SF Giants. McCuthen is only 31 and will fill-in until Aaron Judge returns from the DL.

IN THE NEWS- SSI MAY HAVE OVERPAID 4380 MILLION TO BENEFICIARIES
From Disability Scoop..
Social Security may have overpaid in excess of $380 million to some 77,000 people receiving Supplemental Security Income, according to a government audit.
A review from the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General estimates that the agency failed to conduct so-called redeterminations for about 1.1 million beneficiaries for longer than 10 years due to budget issues.
As a result, the audit found that many people getting SSI- which serves those with disabilities- may have received benefits they shouldn't have qualified for.
Social Security is supposed to regularly conduct redeterminations to check for changes in non-medical qualifications for SSI, including recipient's income, resources and living arrangements.
These evaluations are expected to occur annually in cases where changes are likely or once every six years otherwise, the inspector general's report said.
For the investigation, the inspector general's office sent questionnaires to a random sampling of beneficiaries whose cases had not been reviewed in at least 10 years and conducted searches to identify information about circumstances that might have changed a person's eligibility.
Investigators found cases of overpayments due to unreported income and resources, in-kind support and other factors.
As a result of the inspector general's report, Social Security's Office of Quality Review is now planning a similar evaluation of 400 beneficiaries who have not had redeterminations in at least 10 years. In addition, the agency said it will explore using a system of mailed questionnaires to help more efficiently evaluate people who have not had a redetermination in six years.
Overall, SSI paid out $51.4 billion in benefits to 8.2 million people in fiscal year 2017, according to the report. During the same period, 2.6 million redeterminations were completed.
The Social Security Administration said they expect to complete 2.9 million redeterminations during this fiscal year.

The Phillies have been no-hit twice in Los Angeles. What two Dodger pitchers no-hit the Phils in LA?
Answer: Sandy Koufax ( 1964) & Bill Singer ( 1964).
Answer: Sandy Koufax ( 1964) & Bill Singer ( 1964).
PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- The bats came alive last night at Citizens Bank Park to support a shaky Jake Arrieta, as Philadelphia won 8-6. They finally picked up ground on losing Atlanta, now 3 1/2 games behind in NL East. The victory also delays the nationals from creeping up from behind the Phils. They gain a game in the series but no more.
- Despite the grand slam I still think the organization needs to trade Carlos Santana during the off-season. He has a very quiet 20 home runs. He prefers to walk than swing. His .215 average weighs down the middle of the order. And he's not as good defensively as I imagined. Could Hoskins do any worse at first
-As long as he remains healthy, Roman Quinn needs to play everyday. He brings speed and excitement to the live-up. He can bunt and steal, yet has power as well. John Kruk was right last night. If Quinn hits lead-off, Hoskins can't hit second. Why not> because if Quinn steals, the second hitter should be someone who can bunt or move Quinn to third, without giving himself up. Hoskins is better suited batting in the middle of the order, not second.
- Hernandez continues to strike-out too damn much, especially as a No. 3 hitter. Herrera did not play against lefty Gonzalez Maybe we will see more Quinn, either in center field or left. I'm OK with Herrera in center field. Williams has been getting most of the time in right field. Now will we see more Joey Bats in right?
- Kapler over-managed the game Wednesday night like it was the 7th game of the World Series. Eight relief pitchers after Arrieta only went three innings. There is still no set closer, as Dominguez pitched in the 7th, Neshek in the 8th. Tommy Hunter pitched the last two innings and got the save. He has suddenly been good the last few games. But I don't think the team goes anywhere until they get a permanent, shut-down closer in the off-season.
Off-day today before the Phils open a big three-game weekend series with the Cubs. Nola was moved up to pitch on Sunday, while Hamels was moved back and won't go this weekend. Good news for the Phils, as he has been brilliant since returning to the National League.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- Another embarrassing loss by the Phillies last night, blowing a 3-0 lead and losing to Washington, falling 4 1/2 games behind Atlanta. Poor fundamentals did in the team again. Both mental and physical errors. We are nearing September and this team has gotten worse.
- Kapler says it doesn't do any good to yell at the players, but there is no sense of urgency. When Paul Owens took over the 1983 Wheeze Kids team, he cracked the whip and won the National League pennant. Dallas Green did the same thing with the 1980 champion Phillies. Kapler is more of a brother than father figure to these players. There is no discipline and no consequences. Analytics rule.
- Why did Valasquez even trt to move up with one out in the 8th> He already was in scoring position. Fundamentals are taught in little League how to run the bases.
- I'm tired of Santana. $20 million or not he has got to sit on the bench. Hoskins needs to move back to 1st base. Quinn needs to play everyday. Simple as that. Trade Santana during the off-season. Another brutal Klentak signing him- for three years!
- Aaron Nola pitched great again, facing max Scherzer, who left the game trailing 3-0. The bullpen blew it again, this time Tommy hunter- who pitched a brilliant 8th inning, but started the 9th with a walk to Bryce Harper. Pat Neshek gave up a go-ahead home run to Anthony Rendon.Williams and Ramos hit back-to-back doubles in the 9th inning.
- Again, Hernandez led-off. He strikes out too much.He didn't do much in the 3rd spot. Why not try him in the second spot behind Quinn? Hot Hoskins clean-up and leave him there.
- The Jose Bautista deal was finally completed. He will add a power bat on the bench. It was a no-risk move. On the other hand, the other guy the Phillies should've gotten at the trade deadline was Cole Hamels, who pitched 5 innings agains tthe mets last night, striking out 8. His ERA is down to 0.69.
- Fans are angry and frustrated. Klentak and Kapler won't change. The only hope is owner John Middleton. Hopefully he gets the fan's anger and makes changes at the end of the season. Clean house of analytics. Go back to solid, fundamental baseball with experienced baseball guys. Put players back in their normal positions. Kapler has made mistakes but he can only work with whatever GM Klentak gives him. I say fire Klentak before you go into the all-important free agent season.
- The Phils will exit August only having on one series all month. Their mistakes and bad play is finally catching up with them as time runs out. Lase season the team looked better after the ALL-Star Game, yet Pete McKanin was replaced. This year the squad looks worse after the All-Star Game. . Who will step up and take responsibility?

IN THE NEWS- TEST-MAKER SUED OVER DIVULGING STUDENTS' DISABILITIES
Another article from Disability Scoop..
A major standardized test-maker is being accused of illegally disclosing students' disabilities.
In a class action lawsuit filed this month, a group of students is accusing ACT, Inc. of sharing information about their disabilities on score reports sent to colleges as well as wrongly selling the information.
'ACT flags students' test scores, discloses their confidential information to colleges pre-admission and stigmatizes students with disabilities in the admissions process," said Rahul Ravipudi, a Los Angeles attorney representing students in the case. "Not only does this unlawful practice violate the privacy, security and confidentiality of information entrusted to ACT by the students in its care- it does so for profit, and at the expense of America's most vulnerable students who are striving to further their education.'
The suit filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California alleges violations of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act in addition to multiple California laws.
The students say that information about their disabilities and accommodations they received that was collected when they registered to the take the ACT and on test day was included on score reports sent to colleges. The same information was also sold to schools, scholarship programs and other groups that market to prospective college students, they indicate.
However, disability information is omitted from the score reports sent to students and their high schools, the suit alleges.
"I was shocked to learn that ACT was using my disability information against me and making it more difficult for me to get into college and get the money I need to go to college," said Hallie Bloom, a plaintiff in the case whose ACT score reports denoted her "learning or cognitive disability," in a statement. "I'm speaking out, because I know that someone has to stand up for all of the students who are scared about how their disabilities will be used against them."
The suit seeks a nationwide injunction to stop ACT from disclosing students' disability information in addition to damages for affected students.
Ed Colby, a spokesman for ACT, said the company does not comment on pending litigation., but indicated that they are "committed to the appropriate use of information obtained through assessments."

IN THE NEWS- INCLUSIVE WATER PARK NAMED TO 'WORLD'S GREATEST PLACES' LIST
Nice story by Disability Scoop..
Time magazine says that a first-of-its-kind water park designed to be fully accessible to people with special needs is among the top 100 places in the world for 2018.
The magazine included Morgan's Inspiration Island in San Antonio on its inaugural list of the 'World's Greatest Places." Other landmarks to make the cut include an underwater art museum, a hotel where guests stay alongside giraffes and a cruise ship featuring the longest go-kart track at sea.
Morgan's Inspiration Island, which opened in 2017, is a $17 million attraction filled with pools, geysers, jets, water cannons and a five-minute jungle-themed riverboat ride.
The park was created to be "ultra-accessible" meaning that every part of it is wheelchair-friendly. There is an area with warmer water for those sensitive to cold and special waterproof wheelchairs are available for guests, among other accommodations.
Time magazine said it solicited nominations of museums, parks, bars, restaurants, theme parks, cruises and hotels from its staff and industry experts and then evaluated destinations based on factors including "quality, originality, innovation, sustainability and influence."
The result is a list as diverse as the world it reflects, with 100 entries spanning six continents and 48 countries- highlighting everything from a Texas water park that empowers kids with disabilities to a Maldives resort that's building an undersea abode to a library in Tianjin, China, that's almost as wondrous as reading itself," the magazine said.
Morgan's Inspiration Island is situated adjacent to Morgan's Wonderland, a fully-accessible amusement park that opened in 2010.
Both parks were created by Gordon Hartman, who has a daughter with disabilities, and sought a place where she and others like her could play.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, SIXERS
- More bad fundamentals and not-so- clutch hitting last night at Citizens Bank Park as the Phillies lost the opener of their 3-game series vs Washington. With Atlanta idle, the Phils dropped to 3 1/2 games behind the Braves. their biggest deficit in NL East since late June. With 31 games remaining, with Atlanta still needing to play Boston and Arizona, and with 7 games left with Atlanta, Philadelphia is not out of the division race just yet. But they need to just win, baby. Washington is slowly creeping up on second place and if you want those Brave games in late September to matter you need to win now.
- I was glad to see Quinn play center field and lead-off. He responded with a triple. A head-scratchier was putting the struggling Cesar Hernandez in the third spot. He struck out three times last night. Ramos hit clean-up and made a terrible base running mistake to squelch a potential rally. My suggestion is to keep playing Quinn, in left if not center, play Herrera and hope he comes out of his funk, and move Hoskins back to first base. Immediately improves the defense with the speedy Quin in the outfield and adds speed to the offense. Santana sits an plays occasionally. It probably won't happen, since Santana id making $20 mil. this year.
- Pitcher Zach Eflin hasn't looked the same since he was temporarily sent to the minors. After going 5-0 in June he has declined. Have all the young pitchers hit a wall? That's why dealing for a Cole Hamels ( who pitches tonight and will not face the Phillies at CBP after all), was key and a bad mistake by clueless Klentak
- Speaking of Klentak, he held a press conference prior to the game. He feels the team is "in a good position". What is he watching/ Has he seen the team lose recent series to bad teams like the Reds, Mets Blue Jays and Padres?
- The Phillies are rumored to have claimed Jose Bautista off waivers from the Mets. Klentak needs to work out a deal with New York to complete the transaction. Bautista can play the outfield,. third and first, but he would be used primarily as a power bat off the bench. He, Bour and Santana would be potential home run threats late in games, as we know analytics- nuts Klentak and Kapler love those 3-run homers.
- There is one remaining pre-season game to be played this Thursday against the Jets, but who cares? I hate Dallas owner Jerry Jones, but I agree with his proposal of expanding the regular season to 18 games, limiting training camp, and shaving the pre-season down to two games. The players may not like it, and it would be an obvious money-maker for the owners and TV, but it does make sense, especially when teams are charging fans full price to see an exhibition game, which most fans really don't care about.
- Looks like the Sixers are going to wait to find a new General manager until next off-season. What a joke! Meanwhile, Coach and interim GM Brett Brown will have final decision over all player transactions. So far he sucks as a GM.

IN MY LIFE- COUNTRY SPIRIT WEEKEND CONCERT REVIEW
I was at the inaugural Country Spirit concerts at Ludwig's Corner over the weekend. Me and my girlfriend attended all 3 days. Here is my review:
DAY 1
Ludwig's Corner is known for it's horse shows so having a three-day country music festival on the grounds promised to be interesting. Friday was a perfectly beautiful day- brilliant blue skies, sunny and warm, no humidity, a slight breeze. Far different from the recent muggy, rainy weather which seemed to dominant the entire summer.
Reaching the event around 3:00 pm, we immediately noticed how disorganized things were. First, the parking. We had gotten preferred parking, yet we also wanted ADA parking, which would leave us closer to the grounds. Not the same area, and we had to cross the main road to get from the lot to the main grounds.
Talking to volunteers, they admitted that "Parking sucks!" and said "Nobody knows what they are doing." It was the first year of the festival, as well as the first day, so there was bound to be problems.
The crowd wasn't too large on Friday afternoon. We got our wristbands, after navigating the rough gravel paths and grassy areas, watching for potholes. The worse part was, after traveling so far over rough terrain, we encountered a pair of speed bumps before entering the actual concert area. Definitely not wheelchair friendly.
We had seats but were directed to a raised platform area, which was a nice surprise, so we could see even if the crowd stood. There was a small pit area in front of the huge main stage, plus numerous white plastic seats directly in front and at the sides of the stage. beyond us was the General Admission area, basically an open field. Fans laid on blankets or sat on lawn chairs. We saw quite a few people who were carrying back-packs and sleeping bags. Maybe they camped out all weekend?
Vendors were everywhere, especially beer vendors. It was a country music concert- what else? T-shirts and cowboys hats were flying. Each artist had their own areas to sell their merchandise, including Cd's and shirts. The food was typical festival-food and over-priced. We got a basket of fries, a burger and a small bottle of water and paid $35.
Doors opened each day at noon, and the first acts took the stage around 1:00. We noticed the acts were pretty much on time and everything was on schedule. So, after gettingthe tickets for the entire weekend last chilly march, here we were, during the dog days of August, ready to enjoy.
Cassadie Pope was good. A young singer who came to face on the reality music show, "The Voice," she impressed and got the growing crowd going. We noticed over the next 3 days that the bigger the names, the more lights and video.
Brett Young was next. He drew a younger crowd, a lot of teenybopper types. By the way, according to the act fueled the type of fans. Lots of older country fans, lots of cowboy hats, lots of college-aged kids. Lots of girls and women, most with guys, many with other girls, not too many guys with guys.
Dustin Lynch brought energy along with a younger crowd. We were there on Day 1 to see Alabama, billed "The Greatest Country Band Ever!" They played for over an hour, many of their 40 No. 1 hits, songs like "Feels So Right." "Mountain Music." 'Love In The First-Degree" and the touching "Angels Among Us." It was a great first day, but we still had a long, bumpy road back to the car in the dark.
By the way, at the end ( around 10:30 pm, it was down-right chilly. After all, we were in the middle of an open field, and once the sun set the temps dropped pretty quickly. There was a full moon hovering over the setting, which made the atmosphere even more special.
DAY 2-
We decided to try to park closer, so we asked the security guards at the main gate if we could park in the lot on the main grounds. We found out that was where the ADA parking was located. It made the trip easier.
We also talked to one of the vent's big-shots,a nice lady named Tawny, who appreciated the feedback. We told her we could deal with the rough terrain ( that was more a Ludwig Corner's problem) but the real hassles were the parking and the stupid speed bumps, which a manual wheelchair couldn't go over. The thing about country fans is- they seem to be nice people, and many offered to help us with the pushing and getting over the speed bumps, which was nice.
Anyway, Tawny listened to our concerns and said she would take them into account , if there was a next year. For now, she offered volunteers to help over the speed bumps and a chance to exit via the Loading Dock area after the show, which would make parking even closer. We happily accepted her offer.
Weather-wise it seemed a tad warmer, a little more cloudy but another beautiful evening. Crowd-wise it was noticeable how many more people were there. The General Admission field was packed, and many more fans milled around the vendors.
We arrived to catch only a few songs from country Canadian group called High Valley. There were good, from what we saw and heard. It was hotter, so already the sweat was dripping from the performers. Fans were still guzzling beer, but in the three days, i didn't see any fights or rowdy behavior. Only one incident of a girlfriend leading her noticeably drunk guy ( along with several cops) toward the exit on Saturday night.
The only clunker the whole weekend was Tyler Farr. Just wasn't my taste of country music. He was pretty red-neck and I couldn't understand a lot of his lyrics. The crowd didn't seem to like him either, especially when he started making remarks about Trump, which didn't go over too much with this crowd.
Trace Adkins was next and he was great! very rocking. That's the thing with country music these days- it's not so much country anymore than it is honky tonk rock n' roll. A few of the older acts, like Alabama, had a member of their band playing fiddle, but not many acts.
What separates Adkins from the others is his deep, deep voice, and it seemed even deeper live. He did a nice set as the sun went down Saturday night, that same full moon rising over the fields, not quite as chilly.
Toby Keith was the headliner. We only stayed for a few songs, as we had learned it was really tough to work our way around 5-10,000 people all trying to get to their cars. Keith had the lights, the videos, the American theme going. He never has been a favorite of mine, so I didn't miss him that much.
Sure enough, Tawny had worked it out that my girlfriend got the car and drove it into the Loading Dock area behind the stage. It made life so much easier than having to hike so far to the car, especially over rocky ground and still-muddy fields.
We had noticed that Toby Keith had at least 4 buses with him, as he had tons of equipment and background singers plus his band.
DAY 3
Two down and one day to go. Sunday was much hotter and more humid, with threatening sky. It never did rain, thank goodness, as everyone was not under cover. By night there was smoky, orange-colored moon above. Day 3 was probably the most fun.
Michael Ray was just starting when we arrived. He drew a younger crowd as well. Jake Owen had the most energy of the weekend, as he signed hats tossed onstage while he sang, and later hung out on stage signing more items.
During his hour-long set, he roamed the stage constantly, then finally broke free and almost did a loop around the reserved seating crowd. People were screaming and going crazy as Security followed him. To our shock he jumped onto our accessible platform and started shaking hands and sharing hugs as he continued to sing. I was literally two feet away from the guy. But for some reason he didn't go to the right of the platform where we were sitting. If we had been sitting on the left, as we were the nights before, we probably would've had a sweaty visit. I was happy that he hugged a young girl in a wheelchair near us
.Before he was done with his tour and returned to the stake, Jake had climbed up a tower that sat off the left-hand side of the stage. The fans sitting in those "rooftop" -like seats had to be totally surprised that he had more the long trek up to them.
We caught the first 7 songs of brad Paisley's 90 minute set. Immediately I was stunned by his guitar playing ( I didn't think he was so good until then) and the quality of his videos. One song flowed into the other and so did the corresponding pictures.
Interestingly enough, almost every artist over the weekend did a cover song or two. From Jake Own doing 'Stand By Me" to Paisley doing a brief snippet of Prince's "Purple Rain."
Again we left early to beat the crowd rush, which is a shame. Regardless it was a fun weekend and over too soon.
Here's hoping they keep it going and bring Country Spirit back next week. They seemed to make money for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who got some of the proceeds. It was a memorable time, and if the festival does become an annual summertime event it's cool to know we were at the very first weekend of great music and fun.
If you weren't there sometime over the weekend you gotta go next year, just to experience everything. And even though I was not a huge country fan before the weekend, I found myself playing my favorite songs from the weekend at home. The memories will last forever.
DAY 1
Ludwig's Corner is known for it's horse shows so having a three-day country music festival on the grounds promised to be interesting.
PHILLIY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
- Phillies bounced back Sunday afternoon, salvaging a game in Canada by defeating the Blue Jays. They lost 4 of 6 on the road trip. They stay 3 games behind Atlanta, who won as well. Hopefully the team hangs tough to make those final 7 games vs the Braves at the end of September meaningful.
- Homer heaven! Sunday;s game was typical Phillies. They homered 4 times. That's Kapler's game- play for the 3-run home run. Sometimes it works but often using speed, bunting, stealing, playing small ball leads to rallies. Too often this Phillies team has failed in the clutch, even to put the ball in play to score runs.
Whatever happens this year the organization must address the inconsistency of the offense. Too many strike-outs. But that's analytics.
Tonight starts a key home stand. 6 games against the nationals and Cubs, including a rematch of Nola- Scherzer Tuesday night, and the return of Cole Hamels on Sunday. He has pitched brilliantly since joining Chicago. It would've been so easy for the Phillies to bring him back to Philadelphia. A lot of people were wrong about Hamels,, thinking he had nothing left in the tank. Not me. I wrote here in the blog and on Twitter how Hamels is a big-game pitcher and would benefit the Phillies in many ways. I predicted they would regret not dealing for him, not only to give the rotation an experienced lefty, but as a mentor for the young pitchers too. Plus, keep in mind these younger pitchers like Valasquez, Pivetta and Eflin are approaching their highs for innings pitched. Having a Hamels would've helped and strengthen the bullpen as well, as Pivetta could've slid into the 'pen.
I'm actually surprised because they did get Ramos, Bour and Cabrera, which added veteran depth.
Hamels goes tonight so let's see if he continues his strong performance for the Cubbies before they invade Philly this weekend.
- The WIP Morning Show posed the question: Have the Phillies had a successful season? Incomplete. Sure the club is much better. But after being in 1st place for over a month this summer it's only natural to want more.
Surprises? Nola's season, where he has a shot for both the Cy Young Award and the MVP Award. Franco , after nearly getting traded, finally woke up with the trade murmurs and the Manny Machado rumors. Williams has had a solid season after only playing part-time and pinch-hitting early in the year. Hoskins has solidified his spot as team leader and home run/RBI leader for years to come.
Disappointments? Many, especially for a team so close to 1st place. Kingery, after another tremendous spring training and signing a huge contract, hasn't been what I expected. But of course, he has played on and off as a utility guy and out of position most of the season. Trading Hernandez and putting Kingery back to his Gold Glove caliber position should help. The Phillies have invested too much in Kingery not to put him at second base. A double-play combo of Kingery and Machado in '19 and beyond works for me.
Other disappointments: Aaron Altherr. After hitting 19 home runs in 2018, Altherr finds himself back in Lehigh Valley with an uncertain future. Granted, he didn't play everyday either all the time, as the signing of Carlos Santana slowed down the development of the younger players.
Speaking of Santana, he has to be considered a disappointment. Despite his 19 homers, his average has hovered around .215 all season. He hasn't been as good defensively as advertised. He isn't aggressive enough and prefers to walk than hit. Hopefully he can be dealt during the off-season.
Another big disappointment was J.P. Crawford. He got hurt again and when he was healthy didn't hit. Not what I expected from such a highly-thought-of prospect. I wouldn't be surprised to see him dealt in a package as well.
Catcher Alfaro sucks defensively and strikes-out too much. His potential and rocket-arm save him form being a bust.
I'm not disappointed in the bullpen as they are what they are. Early in the year Siranthony Dominguez was a pleasant surprise, but he has since slacked-off.
Finally, one has to say that Odubel Herrera is a disappointment. After getting off to a hot start he has not only been an inconsistent hitter but has at times reverted back to his old days of sleeping on the base-paths and playing inconsistent center field.
If the team makes the playoffs or even comes close to Atlanta with hopes for 2019, i can't be disappointed. But if the club continues to lose series and fades in the NL East race I have to be disappointed overall. With September almost here the Phils' fate is in their own hands, not only with the 7 remaining games against the Braves, but more games vs division rivals Miami, Washington and new York. Problem is the team needs to beat those mediocre clubs, and their track record against bad teams, like San Diego, Cincinnati and Miami, where the Phillies have lost key series this summer, is not good.
- The Eagles practice for a meaningless exhibition game against the Jets Thursday night. The Falcons are the main focus, and we should know soon if Carson Wentz will play the opener on September 6. Who will give most of the reps in practice with the first team? What about Peters, Sproles or Jeffries- will they see action against Atlanta?
I wouldn't bet money on the Birds in the opener. They may be a totally different team once the season starts, feeding off the frenzied crowd after they raise the championship banner at the Linc. For the coaches and players who want to forget last season, the Super Bowl glory and move ahead, a week from Thursday night and all of the pre-game festivities will be one last celebration for the fans to savor the magical championship season before it's back to reality and facing the challenge of trying to defend the title with the new season on hand.

"I spoke to him one day in a meeting, and I talked to him one day on the phone. The communication wasn't really there."
- Larry Bird
On this day in 2003, Indiana Pacers new team president Larry Bird fired Head Coach Isiah Thomas. The two were contentious rivals from their days of leading the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons to NBA Championships in the 1980s.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- It seems like everyday we say "That was the worst loss of this Phillies' season." But yesterday's devastating loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday was pretty bad, as the team blew a five-run lead. Pivetta, Dominguez and Arano coughed up the lead. Who can we trust in the bullpen? Dominguez seems burned out. Certainly not the same pitcher he was earlier in the season.
The bullpen collapse goes back to GM Klentak. Instead of getting a true clsoer, such as Britton, Inglesias or even former Phil Ken Giles, Klentak said he "likes his bullpen" and instead got average guys like Loup and Avilan. Once again, Phillies management didn't really go all-in this summer. They passed on Machado, Murphy and Hamels.
- The club wasted another chance to draw closer to the Braves, who have lost two in a row to Miami. Still only 3 games out, the Phillies can creep back into contention with ahot week at home, facing the Nationals for three ( including a Nola vs. Scherzer rematch on Tuesday night) and a weekedns et against the Cubs.
- Roman Quinn keeps proving why he should play everyday. Why not move Hoskins back to first base, and play Quinn, Herrera and Williams in the outfield?
- Maybe Scott Kingery is finally snapping out of his season-long funk, as he slammed a homer yesterday to center field,I don't think he ever will blossom into the player he projected to be until he returns to second base on a full-time basis,

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- The Phillies disappointed again Friday night, losing to Toronto after a big win in Washington on Thursday afternoon. They had plenty of chances to score but once again couldn't get the clutch hit they needed. If the Phils don't hit home runs they don't win. Plain and simple.
Speed kills. I would love to see Roman Quinn and Scott Kingery at the top of the line-up next season. They would put tremendous pressure on opposing pitchers. Hernandez and Herrera are solid players but are they championship players? Or is it time to shop them and see what they are worth?
The Braves finally lost last night, so Philadelphia remains 3 games back of Atlanta. Washington lost too to the Mets. They are dreading water and won't challenge for the division.
- The Phils need to win the next two Blue Jay games, which would set them up for a big week of home games. The Nationals come in- including a Nola vs. Scherzer rematch on Tuesday night- and then the cubs ( with Cole Hamels scheduled to pitch next Sunday). The September stretch begins, a situation new to the Phillies after 7 years. Meaningful baseball is what we wanted. Hopefully the club hangs in there and makes those 7 late September games against Atlanta mean something.
- I sound like a broken record, but I'm done with Carlos Santana. My wish is the front office unloads his big contract during the off-season. Return Hoskins to first base, rework the outfield, after you sign Bryce Harper and trade Odulbel Herrera. He has been a bust, no matter what nonsense Kapler or Klentak say. Arrieta has been average. So I wouldn't say last year's free agent signings have been successful. I would also say getting Wilson Ramos was a plus at the trade deadline, but not getting Cole Hamels was a negative. So, GM Matt Klentak, what have you done?

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
- Who would ever believe the Phillies would score more than the Eagles on the same day? Aaron Nola was brilliant Thursday afternoon, as the Phillies salvaged a game in Washington. Despite blowing two games, the Nationals only gained a game on the Phil. Atlanta keeps winning, so the Phillies stay 3 games behind the braves in NL East.
- Herrera crushed a big 2-run homer in the 7th inning against Max Scherzer, saving his season as well. Will be interesting in Toronto with the designated hitter in play. Either use Hoskins or Santana in the DH role. An outfield of Quinn, Herrera and Williams isn't bad, both offensively and defensively.
- Justin Bour is out with a muscle strain but hopefully catcher Wilson Ramos is back tonight.
- Give the team credit for not laying down vs Scherzer and keeping their hopes alive. They are 1 game behind the 3 wild card teams ahead of them- St. Louis, Colorado and Milwaukee.
- Pre-season or not, the Eagles again looked awful , especially on offense. Foles looked shaky and Vatai again stunk on the offensive line. True, their weapons are hurt ( Jeffries, Ajayi, Agholar).Smallwood looked good at RB but former Redskin Jones continues to fumble. The defense looked good in the weird 5-0 loss, although the Browns did break a few long runs early. The kicker missed a 33-yard field goal, which was his MO last season ( make a 61-yarder, miss short FGs and 4 extra points).
I'm glad Coach Pederson was angry at halftime over the way the Birds played, dropping to 0-3 in the pre-season.Unlike Kapler, Pederson shows emotion and keeps it real. He doesn't want the Eagles to live off last year, starting the season fat and sassy and unmotivated. Pederson must be frustrated and a little worried about the hunger of the club.
Wentz looked agile during pre-game warm-ups and many experts, including Ray Didinger, now feel he will start the opener against the Falcons. He must be 100% to play, especially behind that offensive line now. My gut feeling is, especially after seeing the way Foles is playing, that Wentz plays and gives the team and fans an emotional lift on September 6.
The meaningless final pre-season game is vs the Jets next Thursday night.

IN THE NEWS- FACEBOOK ACCUSED OF DISABILITY-RELATED DISCRIMINATION
From Disability Scoop..
Facebook is being accused of allowing advertisers to discriminate against people with disabilities and other groups in violation of federal law.
In a formal complaint from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the social networking giant is facing allegations that it "unlawfully discriminates by enabling advertisers to restrict which Facebook users receive housing-related ads."
Specifically, the federal agency notes that Facebook uses its massive trove of data to allow landlords and home sellers to choose not to show ads to those with interests in categories like "assistance dog," "mobility scooter," "accessibility" and "deaf culture," among others.
Doing so is in violation of the Fair Housing Act, which bars discrimination in housing transactions- including advertising- according to HUD.
"The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination including those who might limit or deny housing options with a click of a mouse," said Anna Maria Farias, assistant secretary for fair housing and equal opportunity at the agency. "When Facebook uses the vast amount of personal data it collects to help advertisers to discriminate, it's the same as slamming the door in some one's face."
Aside from disability, the federal housing agency contends that Facebook's ad platform enables housing providers to limit who sees their ads based on sex, race, color, religion, national origin, zip code and whether users have children or have kids of certain ages.
When the Department of Housing and Urban Development initiates a complaint, it triggers a formal fact-finding investigation that can lead to a charge of discrimination, the agency said.
The HUD complaint follows a lawsuit filed earlier this year by the National Fair Housing Alliance against Facebook outlining similar housing discrimination claims. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York filed a statement of interest in that case last week.
Facebook said it plans to respond in court to the statement of interest and will work with HUD to address the agency's concerns.
"There is no place for discrimination on Facebook; it's strictly prohibited in our policies,' Facebook said. "Over the past year we've strengthened our systems to further protect against misuse."

IN MY LIFE- REVIEW- CONKIN COMEDY NIGHT AT PARX CASINO- WILLIE TYLER & LESTER
It was my first time at Parx casino in Bensalem. Couldn't wait to see Joe Conklin again. I love him in the mornings on WIP with the great Angelo Cataldi. And I've seen Joe a few times with Big Daddy graham in their "Two Funny Philly Guys" show.
So I was disappointed to find out that Joe wasn't there last night. He's on vacation, which is cool but there was no prior indication that he wasn't going to appear. In fact, his Twitter account sent a tweet about the show that afternoon.
Whatever, as I was there to see Conklin, but more so his special guest at his weekly comedy show- the legendary Willie Tyler & Lester.
Willie is 77 now. He has been a master ventriloquist since his initial appearance on TV way back in the ;late 60s on Laugh-in.I grew up with Willie Tyler & Lester. In the opening brief montage before they took the stage, it made me appreciate them even more, realizing they had been on The Jeffersons and numerous variety and talk shows for so many years. When I heard they were coming to Parx I was happily surprised as I had lost track of them over the years.
First, my impressions of Parx. The staff, from the valet guys to the waitresses ( gorgeous in Phillies jerseys and shorts) and even the security guards at the front entrance were all extremely nice. I loved the open space where the complex is located. I had been to the site in the past a long time ago. Keystone racetrack and Philadelphia Park were located on the grounds. They still have racing there certain times of the year.
Anyway, the casino is spacious and clean and has numerous machines and table games. There was a handicapped-accessible blackjack table. Since it was a midweek evening in summer it wasn't crowded at all.
Me and my girlfriend ate at Chickie & Petes and enjoyed cheese steaks and crab fries. The lay-out is nice as all the restaurants and entertainment venues- the Event Center for the bigger shows, and the 360 Lounge where we were heading, are on the same floor as the casino. Very convenient and well-planned.
We played a little Joker Poker before the show. We lost but it was fun. As usual, not enough jokers appeared.
We headed to the small venue around 7:30 for the 8:00 show, as tickets were all general admission so we wanted to get a good spot so we could see the stage.
A really nice guy introduced himself when we went up the ramp, a burly fellow named Mike Baldini. He said he ran the show and the club and worked for the casino. He got us a table near the front.
For a $20 ticket, a free drink was included so it was a good deal for a fun night of entertainment and to be so close.
We met one of the comics to perform before the show, a female comic named Maureen from New York City. She was nice and wanted to warn me that some of her material included jokes about the disabled and specifically about the late Stephen Hawking and the fact he left his wife a tone time. I reassured her that no offense was intended. We gotta laugh, especially in these tough times.
So, Mike warmed up the gathering crowd, the audience mostly older. There was a group there from WHAT-AM and an afternoon talks how host did a not-too-funny few minutes on stage. I don't listen to WHAT so I really didn't know who the hell he was or didn't care.
The first comic was a guy form King of Prussia who looked like Ben Stiller. He was good. Right away i could tell that the crowd wasn't into it. Maybe many were disappointed that Conklin wasn't there. In fact one guy near the stage looked sour and told the MC Baldini that he was disappointed . Baldini said he would "take care" of the disgruntled guy, with a "gift card and a broad."
Maureen came on next and frankly, tanked. She got a few laughs but a lot of silence too. She did her Stephen Hawking joke she had warned me about and he was received with lukewarm response. It probably wasn't worth the drive down from New York.
Then came the iconic Willie Tyler & Lester. Willie may not be a spring chicken anymore, but he looked good, all dapperin a navy blue pin-striped suit. When he arrived before the show, checking out the stage area, he brought a bright yellow suitcase with him. Had to be Lester in there.
The gags were cute and corny, but there was something refreshing in hearing clean jokes instead of the garbage out nowadays. After a few moments I was transfixed on Lester. Willie is so good a throwing his voice, I thought Lester was really talking ( he had his own mic). Lester's gestures were cool too, from his arm-raising to turning his head completely around like in "The Exorcist."
Four songs were included in the roughly 20-minute act, and Willie has a powerful voice for his age, both as himself and as Lester. Of course, he did a few routines which showed off his peculiar skills, and it was hard to tell if he was moving his lips at all. I kept watching his throat to be honest, still amazed.
The cutest part of the show was when Willie called a girl up on stage to be Lester's arms and hands ( by putting her arms inside Lester's jacket- which he said he bought at Costco). That was a lot of fun.
Overall, it was a fun night of entertainment. Yes, I was disappointed no Conklin but I would go back if another interesting headliner was on the bill.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, 2019 BASEBALL SCHEDULE
- The Phillies say it's no time to panic and they are OK.. But it was a brutal loss last night to Washington How many times this season have we said "Wow, that was a brutal loss!". One strike away from winning 7-6. Dominguez ( who looks tired and may have been used too much early in the season), gives up a double and a walk-off homer to blow the game. ThePhillies lose their 4th game in a row ( all to NL East division rivals) and fall to 3 games behind suddenly streaking Atlanta.
- Let's be real ( which Kapler and the rest of the Phillies front office is not)- the organization really didn't go full-in to win this season. Didn' get Machado. Didn't get Hamels ( who, as I predicted, is brilliant for the Cubs). Didn't get a real closer. The results are showing now as the team fades, not only from the NL East but from wild card contention too. They now have 3 teams ahead of them for the 2 wild card spots. Not going to get any easier.
But why should we be surprised? This team is better- record-wise- but poorly constructed and over-evaluated. They have 3 first basemen, and their first baseman of the future plays in left field. Their second baseman of the future, who they gave tins of money to before the season began, plays out of position and is used sparingly now. Their defense is horrible, not only because guys are playing out of position, but because of poor fundamentals, which we saw way back in spring training. Kapler was so into analytics and positive thinking that he forgot to work on the fundamentals like bunting and catching the ball.
They rarely use their speed or move runners. Their live-up is in disorder, as Santana hit clean-up most of the season yet his average is hovering around .215. Hernandez is not a true lead-off hitter. They strike-out way too much, when simply putting the ball in play could score runs. Their starting pitching which has carried the club all year, is wearing down. Their bullpen, overrated by Kapler and Klentak in my opinion, is showing it's true colors when the chips are down. Too many inconsistent guys like Neris, Neris, Garcia and Arano.
The Phillies gave us meaningful baseball late into the season. It's not too late to get close again and make September important. Don't waste the good feelings you've built all seasonwith bad baseball now. But this time of year separates the pretenders from the contenders. Maybe the Phillies just aren't hat good, or aren't ready yet to take the next step?
- If there ever was a must-win game, it's this afternoon. Nola takes the mound against Scherzer, in a classic pitchers' duel. Nola needs help form the offense to snap the bleeding before heading to Toronto for the weekend. We get another shot at Washington next week at home. Don't allow them to sweep and make up 3 games in the pennant race.
- Pre-season game #3 for the Eagles tonight at Clleveland. Game 3 is always the key one, as most of the starters should play at least a half. Foles needs to lead a drive and score. It would give fans confidence that he was just rusty last week against New England. Two bad performances may start to plant seeds of doubt, pre-season or not.
It would also be nice to see some injured players return, but guys like Wentz, Sproles and Peters may not go until at least Opening Night on September 6. Hungry Birds is what I want to see tonight- desire and hustle, not fat and sassy Eagles, like Vitai admitted he was last week.
- The 2019 Baseball schedule is out. Here are some Phillies' highlights and league highlights to look forward to:
Home and home series with the Red Sox. AL Central- Royals, Indians, Tigers on road. Twins, White Sox and Tigers at home. Home & Season Opener in March vs Atlanta. Season ends at home against Miami. Labor Day ( vs Braves) is only home game on a holiday.
Yanks and Bosox play two games in London ( Red Sox home games). A's and Mariners open season in Japan. Mike Trout plays first ever game in St. Louis, the only city he has never played in. Yankees make rare visit to Dodger Stadium in August. All-Star Game in Cleveland for record 6th time. Cubs and Pirates play in Williamsport.Rangers play their last game in old ballpark in late September before moving into new stadium in 2020.
- Well, it will be all-Eagles all the time soon unless our baseball team gets it's act together. It may be anyway, with Opening Night fast approaching on September 6. Bad timing for Phillies to go in the tank. Hard enough to compete with the birds on the sports pages. With Flyers and Sixers training camps not far off the Phils are in danger of being forgotten until spring training next February unless they wake up soon.

Death of an Angel: Lyman Bostock, 1978
'It was horrific. I mean, who expects to go on the air having to announce that one of your ballplayers, someone that everyone cares about is dead suddenly/ I mean, you came on the air and you started with. 'Webegin today's broadcast telecast with terrible news,' and then just bluntly saying, 'Lyman Bostock was murdered last night in Gary, Indiana.' We are not trained to handle a tragedy like that, are we? You think in all of baseball history how many times has that happened? Where a ballplayer plays one day and the next day he's expected to appear, but he's gone."
- Dick Enberg, announcing the Angels at White Sox the day after Bostock's death.

IN THE NEWS- MORE AMERICANS HAVE DISABILITIES, SURVEY FINDS
The following is from The Morning Call..
One in 4 Americans lives with a disability, ranging from difficulty walking or climbing stairs, to trouble concentrating and making decisions, to visual and hearing problems, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey released this month.
The percentage of adults with disabilities is on the rise as poverty grows, according to the CDC.
Mobility problems are the most common disability, affecting 1 in 7 Americans. Cognition issues affect 1 in 10 Americans, followed by problems running errands, hearing, vision and difficulty dressing or bathing.
"At some point in their lives, most people will either have a disability or know someone who has one," Coleen Boyle, director of CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, said in a statement. "Learning more about people with disabilities in the United States can help us better understand and meet their health needs."
The survey marks the first time the agency reported the percentage of adults across six disability types: mobility, cognition, hearing, vision, independent living and self-care.
Woman, American Indians, lower-income people and those living in the South have higher rates of disability, according to the data.
Difficulty with mobility is five times more common for adults ages 45 to 64 living under the poverty level than those with incomes at twice the poverty level.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- Same old story for the Phillies last night in the first game of a key three-game series in Washington. Poor defense, little offense. It didn't help that Manager Gabe Kapler curiously had newcomers Ramos and Bour sitting on the bench. Hernandez led off again. Santana hit clean-up again. Is it any wonder the offense struggled?
- After an hour and 42 minute rain delay, starter Vince Valasquez returned and pitched two more innings of perfect ball. Only down 1-0 in the 5th inning, he was taken out of the game for pinch-hitter Scott Kingery. Why? The bullpen proceeded to blow the 4-1 lead they built, losing 10-4.
With the loss the Phils have now lost 3 games in a row and are two full games behind Atlanta. Even though the Nationals seemingly raised the white flag by trading Daniel Murphy to the Cubs and Matt Adams to the Cards, they still have enough firepower to make things interesting in NL East. The Phils are face Strasberg and Scherzer and cannot get swept.
- I get it. It seems like the Phillies need to learn how to win. The front office has not gone all in on winning this year. Ramos and Bour help ( when they play). Loup is just another guy in the bullpen. Hamells would've helped the rotation. They are not ready to win yet. They are focus on 2019 when they hopefully sign Machado and/or Harper. What sign has Washington given to Bryce Harper by starting to trade key players like Murphy?
Still, it's been a fun season. Maybe the team isn't as entertaining a sit can be. Too much analytics, not enough fundamentals stressed. The club has speed in Quinn, Kingery and Hernandez but they don't use that speed nearly enough. But win or lose, it's fun to scoreboard watch again, fun to know meaningful baseball games are being played daily at the end of August, fun to have hope. Frustrating at times? Yes! But at least we care and are not totally focused on the new Eagles season just yet.
- Road woes continue for the Phillies, and with 19 of the final 37 games away from home the team needs to figure it out quickly. At home, it's more than having their fans support. It's playing in a smaller ballpark so Kapler's style of playing for 3-run homers pays off. Also, woes against NL East rivals continue. Only 10 games remain against opponents outside the East. Of course, the 7 games left with Atlanta at the end of September are huge- but staying close until then also means beating teams like the Marlins, Mets and Nats.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
- The Braves beat the Pirates in Pittsburgh last night, 1-0, snapping their losing streak and moving a full game ahead of the idle Phillies in National League East. The Phils start a three-game series in Washington tonight vs the struggling Nats. For the Nationals, it's the beginning of a do-or-die stretch. Everyone thinks they have a run in them and will magically win the division. But we are nearing the end of August and Washington has two teams to jump over. They at least have to take 4 of the next 6 games against the Phillies coming up. Splitting does them no good.
- The bottom line is, the Phillies will live or die by analytics. From the line-up to defensive shifts to the bullpen and key match-ups, everything will continue to be based on analytics, like it or not.
- I'm glad manager Kapler seemed frustrated over his teams' inability to make up ground this weekend, losing 3 of 5 to the lowly Mets while the Braves lost 4 straight at home to Colorado. I know he wants to remain positive with his young club, but they are in a pennant race. It should be a good learning experience for all, whether they make the playoffs or not. It's time to play the players who are producing, and if that means sitting Herrera or Santana for Quinn or Bour then so be it.
Building for the future is great, but what if the future is now? Will the team be only a game out of 1st place next August 21st? Certainly adding a Machado or Harper ( or both) will help for 2019 and beyond, but you never know if injuries, bad luck or other up-and-coming teams if you will be in the same position.
To me, the teams should make the post-season, although , even for a wild card spot, teams like Milwaukee, LA, Colorado and St. Louis will contend. I think the Cubs end up winning the NL Central, and Arizona survives in NL West. Don't forget, the Phillies must play four games in Colorado against the Rockies in late September, sandwiched between the Atlanta showdowns.
Philadelphia still has too many holes to go far. Their starting pitching will keep them competitive. Imagine their rotation with Cole Hamels, who is 4-0 since joining Chicago with an ERA under .200. Their hitting remains inconsistent. Their defense is often poor. And I would feel better about their bullpen if they had gotten proven closer, such as Britton or Inglesas. Look what the A's are doing in Oakland since they revamped their 'pen with Familia and Rodney.
- Thursday afternoon at 1:05 will be a classic pitchers' duel between Cy Young candidates Aaron Nola and Max Scherzer. Jacob deGrome may win the award. He's pitched great plus don't forget all of the New York attention he will be getting. Hopefully Kapler plays small ball on Thursday to scratch out any runs he can, as getting to Scherzer early will be key. Regardless, look for high strike out totals, as always, against a strike-out pitcher like Scherzer.
- The Eagles are getting ready to play the Browns Thursday night in Cleveland in a key pre-season game. Yes, it's an exhibition, but most of the starters will be playing 3 quarters since everyone will have a week off next week vs the Jets. Hoping Foles plays better vs the Browns, as Wentz does 11-on-11 practices again.
Injuries should be the main concern. Will Jerrigans even play this season and when? What about Jefferies? Sidney Jones and Darren Sproles seem fine. Of course, Wentz is a key question a swell. I still like the Eagles on paper but everything seemed to break well for the squad last season.
Hopefully the Vitai lackluster play was an individual concern last week and not a team issue. I hope the team isn't fat and sassy after winning the Super Bowl. Chris Long was right when he said he doesn't want to talk about last season. This year will be tough enough, with the Birds being the hunted and no longer the underdogs.
Getting off to a fast start over the Falcons on September 6 will be big, as they have winnable games after that against Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Tennessee.
- I'm going to Atlantic City over the labor Day weekend. I intend to check-out sports betting down the shore, and, depending on the odds, am seriously looking at placing wagers on both the Eagles and Sixers overall win totals. I'm going under in both cases. No way the Sixers win over 54 1/2 games. And I think the Birds will 11 games, which puts them under as well. Of course, I'll be cheering for the Eagles to win every game, but realistically, I see 11-5.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
-So, the Phillies lose 2 of 3 to lowly San Diego, split with Boston, then lose 3 of 5 to the Mets...is this a playoff team? They are lucky the braves have lost 4 in a row over the weekend at home to Colorado and remain a 1/2 game back in NL East. Now it's on to Washington for a do-or-die series for the Nationals.
- It sounds like I'm beating a dead horse but why isn't Jusitn Bour playing more? Despite Santana's meaningless home run last night when the Phils were down 7-0, Bour showed last week why he should be playing more. Santana's average still lingers around .215. He leads all first basemen in errors. yet he plays because he makes $20 million and GM Klentak doesn't want to admit that signing Santana was a mistake.
Meanwhile, Herrera plays in center field, even though he struggles at the plate and continues to make mental mistakes in CF and on the bases. Why not play Quinn more and hit him lead-off? Hernandez is not a pure lead-off hitter.
Is it any wonder why the Phillies have trouble scoring runs? It's stretch time. Figure out the money after the season. Right now, play the guys who are playing well. They wasted a golden chance of over-taking Atlanta over the weekend. As the Phillies travel to Washington and Toronto, the Braves are also on the road to Pittsburgh and Miami.
- Williamsport was a great setting for a game. Next year the Pirates and Cubs will be there. The smaller field, the players mingling with the little leaguers, the intimacy of the event was awesome.
- The Phillies keep playing inconsistently and allow mediocre pitchers to dominant them. Losing series to Cincinnati, the Padres and the Mets . It's obvious the Klentak is involved with the line-up. Klentak also once said that Michael Saunders can "carry a club for a month." Similar rumblings are being said about Odubel. But isn't it time to focus on winning the division now?
- 5-9 against the Mets, who have have their number for years now, along with problems beating bad teams like the Marlins, may cost the Phillies the playoffs. Serves them right. Not beating teams you need to clobber means you don't deserve to be in the post-season.
- Eagles' offensive tackle H. Vitai played awful against the Patriots. His lazy, lackadaisical play led to QB Nick Foles getting hurt. Now Vitai says he "wasn't ready" to play, "didn't listen to the coaches", and "needs to forget about winning the Super Bowl." How many more Birds are fat and sassy like Vitai? Are the Eagles their own worst enemy?
The Birds have a good team, better on paper than last year's championship team, but with a tougher schedule, the bulleye's on their back from hungrier teams, the Eagles can't afford to be full of themselves. No wonder other squads have problems after winning a Super Bowl. It's natural to have a bit of a let-down, even though guys like Wentz, Peters and Sproles, injured last season, should keep the team aggressive and motivated.
- Is the Sixers' Markelle Fultz going to be the Phillies' Mickey Moniak? A pair of No. 1 overall picks who are busts?

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- No shame in losing to Jacob deGrome. The Mets' righty is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He shut down the Phillies on Saturday afternoon, 3-1, as New York tied the series, 2 games to 2. Game 5 is tonight in Williamsport before the Phils hit the road for 3 in Washington, starting on Tuesday night, and 3 next weekend in Toronto.
Luckily the Braves lost their third straight home game to Colorado, so Philly remains only 1/2 game behind in NL East. The Nationals stay 7 games out.
- Of more concern is the continued declining play of Odubel Herrera. He's hit around .200 since June, has played shaky defense and yesterday made a key, rally-killing base-running blunder.
He's got so much talent yet goes brain-dead at times. Once or twice a year is forgivable but with Odubel, it's becoming more frequent- and it's costing games in a tight pennant race.
Roman Quinn should be getting more playing time. With his speed he would be an ideal lead-off hitter. He covers the same ground in center field as Herrera and is more aggressive and faster on the bases.
It will be interesting if Quinn gets more time what will happen to Herrera next season. Is he trade bait? What would he be worth on the market?
- Even though newly-acquired Justin Bour has hit deGrome well in the past, Santana got the start at first base. Kapler describe it "for defense",but it makes no sense. For an analytical guy who has gone by the numbers all season, it didn't make sense. Santana is only trade chip after the season, to open first base and unload his huge contract.
- I also don't get why Cesar Hernandez continues to bay lead-ff. His average is hovering around .260. He strikes-out too much, doesn't bunt enough or utilize his speed. He's more of a No. 2 hitter.
- Finally, I wrote here that the Phillies would regret not bringing back Cole Hamels. He continues to pitch well for the Cubs. Will be interesting to see if he faces Philly when Chicago visits Citizens Bank Park in two weeks.
- Those amazing Oakland A's are tied in AL West with the defending world champion Houston Astros. Seattle is only 3 1/2 games behind. It's so hard to repeat as champs ( take note, Eagles!). If not the division, surely one or both will be wild card teams if the Yankees falter.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- I still don't agree with the embarrassment of the 24-4 surrender the other night to the Mets, but kudos to the team for bouncing back and winning the next two games. The Phils are now 1/2 game behind Atlanta for 1st place. The nationals move to 7 back and play the Phillies 6 times in the next two weeks. If the Phillies even split those games that will hold off any Washington surge.
- The club stole 5 bases last night. Bad throwing catcher on the Mets, plus pitcher Noah Syndergaard is very slow to the plate. I like this exciting kind of baseball. It moves runners and puts pressure on the defense. But don't expect this to become commonplace. Analytics do not promote things like stealing, bunts or giving away outs to move runners. That's not Kapler's way. but when the situation is right it's nice to see the Phils use their speed.
- Aaron Nola went 14-3 , striking out 11 in 7 innings. He is a true ace and remains dominant. Up to Arrieta to win tonight vs deGrome. Sunday night is on ESPN in Williamsport.
- I still want Bour to play more than Santana, Ramos to catch more than Alfaro, and Hernandez not to hit lead-ff.
- Good luck to my pal, Steve Trevelise, on his upcoming heart procedure! rest and get well on your vacation!

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
- It didn't matter that the Phillies split their doubleheader with the Mets yesterday and actually gained a 1/2 game in the standings. What mattered was the embarrassing 24-4 loss to New York in Game 1. And it wasn't just the score, it was the way it happened.
First, despite 4 solo homers, the team played like dogs, committing 4 errors. Their fundamentals and defense have been poor all season. Then Manager Gabe Kapler gives up- in the 5th inning- and allows regular position players Quinn and Kingery, to pitch the final few innings. Quinn has had shoulder problems in the past yet was asked to throw 42 pitches. Kingery soft-tossed the ball to the plate, like a softball game ( only overhand) and sent his own little message- "I really don't want to do this it was humiliating to the organization and city as well as a laugihng stock to baseball. Owner John Middleton should feel shame. Giving up should be a reason to fire Kapler's ass immediately. Hopefully he is being called in the carpet today.
What message does that say to the young players? A 10-run deficit with several innings to play has been overcome in the past. Kapler says the fans were entertained by the game. Mets fans were laughing Good thing the game wa son Facebook- not as many fans saw it.
What a disgrace!
He's not aggressive enough, sitting back and waiting for three-run homers. He's not honest enough, making lame excuses for his lazy players. He's not honest enough to admit his stupid analytic blunders. He knows his boss, clueless Klentak will back whatever he says or does. He's not a fighter or a blue-collar guy. He's not Philadelphia
Hopefully the writers are all over Kapler's ass today. No matter what he does from now on, I'll never forgive him for giving up. I'm embarrassed to be a Phillies fan today.
Ranger Saurez is a joke too. He is the best they have in the farm system to fill in? The Mets stink and they score 30 runs in two games? They are still in the Phillies' heads. Now the club faces Syndergaard and deGrome back-to-back.
- It was only a pre-season game, but the Eagles played lousy against the Patriots last night. Foles stunk and he hurt his shoulder. Will that accelerate the return of Wentz?
Even before last night I thought the Eagles would go 11-5 this season. The schedule is tougher, other teams will be gunning for the world champion birds, and will the Eagles be full of themselves? No matter that guys like Wentz, peters and Sproles will be extra motivated, shouldn't there be a natural let-down after winning it all?
The Birds play the Browns next week in an important outing before the really meaningless last pre-season contest. Right now, the team isn't ready for Opening Night on September 6 vs the Falcons.

PHILLIES SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES
- I was there for perhaps the biggest win of the Phillies season o far, a 7-4 lashing of the best team in baseball, the Boston Red Sox, on Wednesday night. Kudos to Justin Bour, Kingery, Ramos, Neris and others for the big win. It was much needed- it split the season series vs Boston and kept pace with winning Atlanta, still 2 games behind the Braves.
-Tons of Red Sox fans there. Attendance was a little over 35,000. Not bad, but with the Red Sox in town, on a warm August night, and the pennant race heating up, no sell-out?The Boston fans around me were pretty courteous. The yelling got really bad in the bottom of the 8th, with the Phils leading by 3 runs and the bases loaded with no outs . The "Let's Go Red Sox" chants were out-drowned by Philly fans. It was also fun to see the shell-shocked faces on the Boston fans as they couldn't believe or accept losing to the Phillies.
- With great performances by newcomers Bour and Ramos hopefully they will become regulars soon. I've seen enough of him and his $20 million contract.
- The was a media softball game before the game, between Radio/Print and TV. Radio won, with miss Philadelphia ( who played second base) winning Most Valuable Player. I didn't know many personalities, only a few WIP Sports radio guys and both Matt O'Donnell and Bob Brooks from 6ActionNews. It was PAL Night at the Phillies, so it was a worthwhile cause.
- With seasoned pros like Ramos and Bour in the line-up they didn't take as many pitches, so the game seemed faster ( even though it was over 3 hours in length). More entertaining for fans. Maybe Kapler is getting the message, a she stated after the game last night that "we didn't win on walks and home runs..we had doubles and triples.'
- The Eagles play their second pre-season game tonight at New England. More interesting than the game, will Tom Brady finally shake Nick Foles' hand after wards? Like a sore loser, he completely ignored the Super Bowl MVP and stomped to the ;locker room. Will tonight be any different?
- Key pitching match-ups this weekend vs the Mets- Nola vs Synderguard on Friday; Arrieta vs deGrome on Saturday night.Pivetta will probably go Sunday night vs New York in Williamsport.
- With the victory, the Phils now have 66 wins and 39 home wins- they exact same totals they had all of last season. Winning 90 games, usually a benchmark for a playoff spot, is still up in the air. Would a win total in the 80s be enough?
Don't look now but the Cardinals, always a dangerous team, are only a game behind Philadelphia in the wild card race.St. Louis has won 8 games in a row.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, and the fact the Phillies played the Red Sox tough last night doesn't cut any ice. They lost and are now 2 games behind the streaking Braves. The sinking Phils need to get their act together fast before they fade away, with big games upcoming against Washington and challenges against deGrome and Synderguardon tap later this week.
- I've said this before- I hate Tommy Hunter. A free agent bust, for sure. At this point I'd rather see the dreadful Hector Neris in the game late.
I've also said that Santana is a bust. I really don't care how much he walks. his average is hovering around .215. It's time to play Justin Bour. Why get Bour if you're not going to use him?
I get it- Klentak doesn't want to admit the $20 million a year Santana was a mistake. But let's sort that all out after the season. Let's try to win games now!
- 5 reasons why Phillies fans aren't going to the games:
1. No Machado ( he would've brought excitement and wins)
2. No Hamels ( he would've brought a solid, experienced lefty to the rotation, another mentor for the young staff, and fun for the fans who remember him).
3. Guys like Tommy Hunter ( too many of them on the club).
4. Santana ( enough said)
5. Boring, analytic baseball ( too many strike-outs, too many walks, no action or contact)
- Kapler says this morning with Angelo ( great interview, Angelo!) that struggling Kingery is a great weapon off the bench and he would rather keep him on the big club then sending him down to LehighValley to get his swing straightened out and clear his head. Great! A $24 million dollar developing young kid sittingon the bench to pinch-run? The Phillies so-called brain-trust is screwed up.
- The key series of the year was the embarrassing weekend in San Diego. Losing 2 out of 3 to the lowly Padres was a killer. Eflin, and Arrieta lost to rookies. Phillies have everything to play for. Padres have no pressure and stole nine bases in the series. Now the Phillies need wins but are up against better teams and better pitchers.
- Kapler said this morning that "one game" could decide the division. Does he remember Opening Day? He over-managed and screwed-up, taking Nola out with a 4-0 lead after only 6 innings-against the braves! Losing that game was a two-game swing! Could it be that the first game of the long 162 game season will come back to bite the Phillies in the ass?
- I've got tickets to the game tonight. Thank God my seats are behind the Phillies' dugout and not on the third base side. Embarrassing to see Red Sox Nation take over. But why not? 51 games over .500? Still, if they get too far out of hand, we can just remind them "41-33..Eagles win the Super Bowl." That should shut them up!

The Australian Norman became the second player in history to lose playoffs in all four major championships. Fort Azinger, it was his first major championship.

IN THE NEWS- ADVOCATES PUSH FOR GREATER AIRLINE ACCESSIBILITY
From Disability Scoop..
A lawsuit is seeking to force the nation's airlines to make big changes in order to better accommodate travelers with disabilities.
The suit filed this month against the U.S. Department of Transportation accuses the agency of unlawfully delaying rules aimed at adding accessible restrooms to single-aisle airliners.
In 2016, Congress directed the Transportation Department to release rules on airplane restroom accessibility, among other issues, by July 15, 2017.
However, to date, the agency has not released a rule on lavatory wheelchair access on single-aisle aircraft and the issue was recently moved to the Transportation Department's long-term agenda, according to the suit filed by the Democracy Forward Foundation on behalf of Paralyzed Veterans of America in the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
"Accessing a restroom on an airplane is something that most Americans take for granted," said David Zurfluh, president of Paralyzed veterans of America. "We simply want DOT to move forward with the rulemaking process as Congress required. We have waited long enough."
The veterans group said that the Air Carrier Access Act bars airlines from discriminating against travelers with disabilities, but that the Transportation Department has skirted rulemaking on lavatory accessibility on single-aisle aircraft since at least 1990.
Without accessible restrooms on most domestic flights, individuals with disabilities are often left uncomfortable or forced to resort to dehydration and other measures in order to travel long distances, the group said. At present, accessible lavatories are only required on planes with more than one aisle.
The suit asks the court to compel the Transportation Department to take action.
For its part, the Transportation Department said it could not comment on pending litigation. But, a spokeswoman indicated that the issue of accessible lavatories on single-aisle aircraft is on the agency's long-term agenda though there is no scheduled timeline for rulemaking.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES, BASEBALL ROUND-UP
- Today is the Eagles' last day at training camp. They fly to New England tomorrow to take on the Patriots on Thursday night. Questions still persist about Carson Wentz and his health for September 6, opening night against the Falcons. Alshon Jeffries is also questionable for the opener. Rumors persist that the Birds may put Jeffries on the unable to perform list, which means he would be out the first six weeks of the season. He may miss Game 1 but I don't think the Eagles will put him on the shelf for six weeks.
If he is unable to play, the Birds have depth at wide receiver with Wallace, Agholor and another pass catcher in tight end Dallas Goehart. Add Darrin Sproles into the mix and the Eagles should have plenty of offense.
- The Phillies were off on Monday. Meanwhile Atlanta won a doubleheader over Miami, moving a full game ahead of Philadelphia. Odd to see the Phils drop into second place after being on top for over a month. Things may not get any better soon, as the Phillies face the mighty Red Sox ( who are an amazing 50 games over .500) the next two nights at Citizens Bank Park. The Mets play the Phils for five games later in the week, but remember that New York always give the Phillies problems. The Braves stay home this weekend to play the Colorado Rockies.
- A huge Klentak blunder as Boston invades town: for $2 million more a year the Phillies could've and should've signed J.D. Martinez instead of Carlos Santana instead. Consider the stats:
Martinez: .333 average 37 home runs 104 RBIs
Santana: .215 average 16 home runs 66 RBIs.
Plus Hoskins could've stayed at first base....
- Baseball round-up around the league:
In NL East, despite the fact that Harper, Murphy and Zimmerman have finally come alive in Washington, the nationals have fallen seven games back. Plenty of games left, including a home-and-home series with the Phillies next week, but I think the Nats are done. The Mets and Marlins are after-thoughts, battling for last place.
The Cubs, who have the best record in the National League, have extended their lead in NL Central to three games over Milwaukee. Never count out St. Louis and they have battled back to five games back. Pittsburgh, despite trading for pitcher Chris Archer in July, remain a long shot at eight games behind.
NL West is maybe the most competitive division, with Arizona up a game on bot the Dodgers and the Rockies. Don't discount the Giants, only five out but with three teams to jump over.
Of course Boston is on a record-setting season. 116 win in the regular season by Seattle remains the benchmark. Right now the Red Sox are only 31 wins away in mid August. They have buried the Yankees, who are 10 games in second place.
As expected, the Indians have cruised in AL Central, now 12 1/2 games up on the Twins.
AL West remains tight with the surprising Oakland A's a mere two games in back of the defending world champion Astros. Seattle still have a shot, 4 1/2 games out.
Regarding the wild card races, in the NL, the Phillies and Brewers right now have the two spots, with a slight advantage for the home game to Philly. The Cardinals, Rockies and Dodgers are within shouting distance for the wild card.
In the AL, it's the Yanks and A's in the wild card game, with the Mariners only 2 1/2 games behind. No other team in the American League is even close for a playoff berth.

Wheaties Box History
The first athlete to appear on a Wheaties box was Lou Gehrig in 1934 ( he appeared on the back, not on the front). Wheaties would eventually make the shift to featuring sports players on the front with decathlon gold medalist Bob Richards in 1958, Bruce Jenner appeared on the box in 1977 and was one of the first official Wheaties spokespeople. Jenner won the decathlon in 1976 at the Montreal Olympics. Michael Jordan has appeared on the box more than any other athlete.

IN MY LIFE- REVIEW- TOMMY & ME
- I saw Ray Didnger's wonderful play Tommy & Me last summer.I saw it again Sunday afternoon at the Media Theater, a larger venue. I had front row seats The spacious theater was nearly full. The audience was mostly older and almost everyone was wearing some sort of Eagles gear.
The play itself didn't differ much from last summer. It still brought back great memories and seemed even more special and sentimental as Eagle fans continue to ride the wave of their Super Bowl championship.
Directed by the great Joe Canuso, the play flows and the 70 minutes flies by quickly. There are 4 actors- a young and older Ray and a young and older Tommy McDonald.
What makes the play work is the personal story of famed sports writer Ray Didnger meeting the legendary Eagle receiver Tommy McDonald's at training camp every summer, becoming friends and even carrying his helmet after practice. They meet again later in life and Ray helps Tommy get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, along-overdo honor.
The special part of the story is life going in circles- the football player giving the adoring kid so much then the sportswriter giving back in return. It makes one smile, laugh and cry. It shamelessly tugs at the heartstrings, but in this world we live in now, don't we need more stories like Tommy & Me?
I'm not sure if the play will ever go beyond the Philly area. It deserves to be seen by a larger audience but there is a unique bond between the Eagles and the area. Maybe Didnger will write a screenplay for a movie someday. instead of the older Ray talking about his childhood memories with McDonald he could show those memories. Maybe he could incorporate somehow the Birds finally winning the Super Bowl?
I know Tommy's health has not been good. I wish him the best and hope the play makes him smile. It sure has made me happy the two times I've seen it.
Note: Special guests at the matinee performance Sunday afternoon were two players who were on the 1980 Philadelphia Eagles first Super Bowl appearance- linebacker Bill Bergey and tight end Keith Krepfle. They joined Didnger and Canuso for a brief Q & A session after the show. Bergey was funny, still huge. He recently had a knee replacement and hobbled slightly to and from the stage. Krepfle was OK but was a little long winded. Both praised their coach, Dick vermeil, like he was a saint.
Each performance has a special guest or host. Also in attendance yesterday were former Eagles ticket manager Leo Carlin and Ava Graham, Big Daddy's daughter and a member of the WIP Morning Team.
The play runs thru August 26. Tickets still remain. Go see it!

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- When the Phillies hired young Gabe Kapler I expected him to be an aggressive, dynamic manager, not an old fart Earl Weaver-type clone who sits back and waits for 3-run homers. I expected the Phillies to play like the Padres did this weekend. I'm disappointed.
- Kapler says that Santana is having "a very good year." What???? He stinks! Kapler is trying to protect his analytically clueless boss, Klentak.
- Kingery needs to be sent down, as I have blogged before. He is over-matched and needs to get his swing right before coming back in September. Instead they send down Eflin til Thursday, costing the kid $20,000. I hope Eflin doesn't forget it. The Phillies have so much friggin' money yet are still cheap. Middleton is a fraud and Klentak is clueless.
- As I predicted, Cole Hamels has helped the Cubs ( including last night- 7 innings, 1 run, 9 strike-outs). The Phillies blew it by not trading for Hamels. He would've helped this season and beyond and brought excitement t the fans. What did they have to lose? And Chicago didn't give up much for Cole. Another bad Klentak move.
- I would've kept Freddie Galvis, if only for his defense. I'm glad it stuck it to the Phillies this weekend. Analytics is why Galvis isn't with the Phils. He doesn't get on base enough, but his defense saves runs and he was a leader in the clubhouse. Big mistake.
- Franco got 2 hits Sunday but also didn't hustle on offense and defense. He didn't bust it out of the box on a liner off the left field wall and got thrown out at second base by a wide margin. Then defensively, he embarrassingly threw a ball away to get a Padre runner at the plate. He has stepped up his game recently but sometimes reverts back to boneheaded, lazy Franco.
- Sloppy, embarrassing game and weekend by Phillies. Mental mistakes shouldn't be happening this time of the year against last place Padres. San Diego runs wild on bases, stealing 6 bags yesterday, kicking the Phillies' ass.
- What's the sense of getting Justin Bour if you're not going to use him? He got a meaningless pinch-hit single in the 9th with two outs and the team down 6 runs. Why is Santana playing?
- Again, Santana hits clean-up and is not hitting. Hoskins hits second and is in a 1-for-27 slump. No wonder the club isn't scoring runs. No rallies, no bunts, no runners in motion, no hit-and-run, no steals. Why isn't the speed of Herrera/Quinn hitting lead-off?
-You want to believe in the Phillies. They play competitively against good teams like the Yanks, Red Sox and Dodgers, yet lose 2 of 3 to lowly San Diego. They suck on the road because they don't play small ball. They win at home because they walk and hit homers at bandbox Citizens Bank Park.
Atlanta wins and is percentage points ahead of Philadelphia now. The Braves play a doubleheader vs Miami today as the Phillies have off and get ready to face the powerful Red Sox Tuesday and Wednesday. With pitchers like deGrome, Synderguard and Scherzer due to face the Phils soon, things won't get any easier. They had a chance to pad their lead against average Padre pitching. Instead, the Phils may have dug themselves a hole they might not be able to get out of.

MOVIE REVIEW- DOG DAYS
** out of four.
Dog Days is a cute, sweet, romantic, syrupy, often cheesy and hokie summer family film. It's harmless and touches the heart of all dog lovers out there. It easily could've been a Hallmark movie.
Too many stories try to entwine together, some funny, some touching, with predictable results and dialog. It's almost like a "Love, American Style" type of vignettes/ It tries hard to be a wacky, screwball comedy like 'There's Something About Mary" yet also tender and serious, dealing with adoption, both of children and \animals, and even the passing of our pet loved ones.
It's a millennial film made by millennials, set in LA. It will soon pass to cable TV and be another relic like "Must Like Dogs" or "Love, Actually.' It got a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.
There was only one family in the theater with us during the Saturday afternoon matinee in King of Prussia. As we waited to go into the theater two older ladies came out. So the movie may not get a big audience, but it is what it is. It's not a summer blockbuster, super hero or animated feature, or even gross comedy. It's pretty nameless cast ( often than Eva Longoria, who played on Desperate Housewives and was married to basketball star Tony Parker) does a good, if not memorable, job.
I've seen better movies recently ( "Leave No Trace" for instance) but for a few hours of smiles and canine sweetness, Dog Days won't disappoint.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES
- Nice bounce back by the Phillies last night, beating San Diego and going a game up on losing Atlanta in NL East. A win today over the Padres behind Arrieta would give the team a 3-3 road trip before returning home Tuesday to face the mighty Red Sox.
- Aaron Nola earned his 13th win of the season, pitching six shut-out innings. With better run support Nola easily could have 15 or 16 victories and continues to be a strong contender for the Cy Young Award.
- Newcomer Justin Bour is now with the club but did not play last night. He is a Braves-killer and will be a big part of the stretch drive when Philadelphia and Atlanta meet for seven crucial games in late September.
- I feel bad for pitcher Zach Eflin. He has a 8-4 record this season and . for the most part, has been a stud. But he was sent back to Lehigh Valley yesterday to open a spot for Bour on the roster. Eflin will be back on Thursday when he pitches one of the doubleheader games against the Mets. Eflin loses ten days of major league services and pay for the sake of the team. Obviously the organization doesn't want to demoted both Kingery or Crawford, so they will demote pitchers until the September 1 call-ups.
- The Phillies' outfield only has 11 assists so far this season, the lowest in the majors. Weak outfield arms, poor defense. Amazing that the tam is in 1st place on August 12.
- After today the Phils only leave the Eastern Time Zone one time for a four-game set in Colorado late in September.
- I get it that the wildly inconsistent Santana, making $20 million this season, won't sit on the bench in favor of Bour. But Bour should play first base at least two times a week. Santana hasn't gotten the job done and the stretch-run for the playoffs is coming. It would be ideal to unload Santana and his hefty contract in the off-season, so that Bour/ Hoskins can man first base.
- Catcher Wilson Ramos played his first rehab game in Clearwater on Saturday. He will be a major upgrade, both offensively and defensively, over the catching combo of Alfaro/ Knapp. Resigning him in the off-season and allowing Alfaro learn from the experienced, All-Star should be a priority for GM Klentak.
- Picking up one more pitcher for the bullpen would completed the upgrade for the division title. Because the team is in first place it won't be easy to claim an available reliever on waivers.
