THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- MARCH 4

Brotherly Love

On this day in 1990, Hank Gathers of Loyola Marymount was pronounced dead less than two hours after collapsing during a West Coast Conference tournament basketball game. Tragically, the WCC's all-time scoring leader at the time had succumbed to a massive heart attack.

Bo Kimble, Gathers' Philadelphia boyhood friend and LMU Lion teammate, led an emotional NCAA tournament run dedicated to Gathers into the West Regional final. In victories over new Mexico State, Michigan and Alabama, Kimble shot his free throws left-handed, for Hank.
