THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- MARCH 14

Dancing with Cinderella

The NCAA tournament began seeding teams in 1979. In 1985, the first year of the expanded 64-team field, a top seed was shown an early exit when David Robinson carried #13 seed Navy over #4 seed LSU, 78-55, to begin the playoff.

The following year two #14 seeds bracketed squads upset #3 seeds in the tourney's opening round: Cleveland State and Arkansas-Little Rock ousted big-timers Indiana and Notre Dame respectively.

At the onset of the 1991 tournament, the Richmond Spiders became the first team with a #15 seed to take down a #2 seed when they stunned Syracuse, 73-69.
