THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- MARCH 11

Clair Bee

The innovative Clair Bee coached Long Island University to two NIT titles. His first came in 1939 and gained the (24-0) Blackbirds a share of Oregon's championship claim.

Coach Bee authored the fictional "Chip Hilton" sports books for kids, and gave basketball the 1-3-1 zone defense. He was also an influential advocate of the 3-second rule and the NBA's 24-second clock.
