CONCERT REVIEW- DAVID ARCHULETA

** 1/2 out of **** stars.

We saw ex- American Idol runner-up David Archuleta last night at Sellersville Theater. He's back on tour after leaving music behind for several years as he went on a mission for his church to South America. He talked about that mission and the aftermath often during the 90-minute plus concert.

Interesting crowd in the not-so-sold-out audience. An odd combination of millennial girls (20s-30s), older women ( 50-plus) and gay men.David's fans seem nice, and many knew each other from other shows, his fan club and even his convention. Still, I had an uneasy feeling watching older. mature woman actually squeal for a 28-year-old  guy. Then again, older women squealed for The Beatles back in the day.

I remember seeing David on Idol 11 years ago and appreciating his voice and talent. He probably should've won over David Cook ( where is he?). But other than his first since ("Crush") I didn't really following his career so the songs last night were unfamiliar. His music is straight pop, Aviana Grande/ Taylor Swift-type of pop. I'm not really into the current music scene, but Archuleta's music was pleasing.

He seems like a nice kid, sincere and shy, but I kind of got tired of his message and the many songs form his album "Postcards in the Sky." I wanted to hear something I knew, and I really didn't get there until the end.It was actually somewhat of a downer, hearing how he almost quit music and show biz.

It was reported by fans who met David in a pre-show Meet and Greet that he was sick, a congested  thing where he only answered in whispers to save his voice. Sick or not, his voice was clear and strong, maybe riding on adrenaline. His back-up band  ( three other guys) was tight.

I was disappointed that he didn't do John Lennon's "Imagine", a song which took him far on Idol. Maybe because he wasn't feeling well?

A nice treat was a song called "Paralyzed" from a new, upcoming album, and a brief snippet of the Oscar-winning song by Lady Gaga called "Shallow."

"Crush" ended the lively, often introspective set. For the first time seeing Archuleta live, it was a fun show. I just wish he would've did more familiar material.
