- Bryce Harper continues to make news and he hasn't even played an inning of baseball yet for the Phillies. His first Grapefruit League game is scheduled for Friday vs Toronto in Clearwater. Harper stated that when Mike Trout becomes a free agent after the 2020 season ( that's if the Angels don't sign him to a contract extension before that) he will call Trout and do everything possible to encourage him to come to Philadelphia.
Chances are pretty good that Trout, being a local kid from Millville, New Jersey, and an Eagles season ticket holder, will sign with the Phillies anyway. but it doesn't hurt that a fellow young superstar is asking you to join him to reek destruction on the national League for the next ten years or so.
The problem is that Harper is tampering, and the Anaheim Angels have contacted major league Baseball about the situation. Harper may get a warning, or even a fine, which he can easily afford to pay. The invitation is out there, and apparently Harper and Trout already are friends and have been texting each other during the off-season about the virtues of playing in Philly.
If Harper can make $330 million over 13 years and generate the jersey and ticket sales that are going on now, one can only imagine what Trout will do. Trout, playing on the West Coast, is more of a mystery. We all know he is great but how often do we get to see Trout play? Whereas, Harper we saw at least 19 times a year.
The dream of Harper and Trout ( along with Rhys Hoskins) batting back-to-back is chilling. Each will get great pitches to hit. Pick your poison. Both should easily be future hall of Fame players just entering their prime.
I'm going to enjoy this summer and next, but the summer of 2021 is really the season to go wild, as Harper and Trout may be together for the first time.Philadelphia will always be a football town, with the Eagles No. 1. but with Harper, Trout, Hoskins and Nola leading the Phils, baseball and the Phillies will be pressing the birds and Citizens Bank Park will be the place to be seen.
- So, as we near the NFL free agency period, the Eagles resign Brandon Graham ( a good move0 and restructure Lane Johnson's contract. Looks like they will part ways with Tim Jurnigans. The jury is still out on Jason Peters,Michael Bennett, Darren Sproles and Howie Long. Nick Foles looks like he will sign with Jacksonville.
The Birds are reportedly interested in Cleveland running back and punt returner Duke Johnson. giving up a 5th round draft pick for the speedy Johnson may not be a bad move. The Birds should also invest a high pick on a young running back in the upcoming draft.
With the schedule being released in a month, and the draft occurring at the end of April, it's a fun time to be a football fan, even though the first meaningful game is still six months away.
- The Sixers won again last night, their sixth game in a row with injured Joel Embiid, beating the Magic in South Philly. They hit the road starting tonight, playing the bulls in Chicago tonight and the Rockets in Houston on Friday.
