The old 60's rock.blues group, the Yardbirds, returned to the beautiful Colonial Theater in Phoenixville last night. They played to a good crowd, not quite a sell-out on a weeknight. Drummer Jim McCarty is the only original member of the legendary band still around. The Yardbirds once boosted the likes of guitar gods Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Robert Plant in their band. Their current members may not be as iconic but the new Yardbirds are a tight ground with really good musicians.
Of course they did their more recognizable hits such as the opener "Heart Full Of Soul," "For Your Love," and other psychedelic pop/rock classics. Their 90-minute or so set consisted of long guitar riffs and solo spots form each member, especially an extended drum solo by the energetic McCarty.
A lot of old heads were there, baring silver long hair in ponytails and 60s type garb. The younger kids who were there, millennial age or younger, hopefully appreciated the band. The great video clips running behind the band on the Colonial's movie screen only enhanced the experience. At times i was mesmerized by the wonderful videos of the Yardbirds through the 60s.
The Colonial has great acoustics, being an older theater, so, other then one song being somewhat murky in the sound system, the music sounded great.
It's the second time in two years we have seen the Yardbirds in town. Hopefully they continue to return and keep the music alive.
The opening act was Greg Sover, doing a 30-minute guitar acoustic set with fellow band mate Greg Lee. Sover did one blues song but the rest was pure pop/rock. Sover ( who announced he will be appearing at Steel City Coffeehouse in mid-April) was enjoyable, friendly and funny.
