CONCERT REVIEW- DAVID ARCHULETA

** 1/2 out of **** stars.

We saw ex- American Idol runner-up David Archuleta last night at Sellersville Theater. He's back on tour after leaving music behind for several years as he went on a mission for his church to South America. He talked about that mission and the aftermath often during the 90-minute plus concert.

Interesting crowd in the not-so-sold-out audience. An odd combination of millennial girls (20s-30s), older women ( 50-plus) and gay men.David's fans seem nice, and many knew each other from other shows, his fan club and even his convention. Still, I had an uneasy feeling watching older. mature woman actually squeal for a 28-year-old  guy. Then again, older women squealed for The Beatles back in the day.

I remember seeing David on Idol 11 years ago and appreciating his voice and talent. He probably should've won over David Cook ( where is he?). But other than his first since ("Crush") I didn't really following his career so the songs last night were unfamiliar. His music is straight pop, Aviana Grande/ Taylor Swift-type of pop. I'm not really into the current music scene, but Archuleta's music was pleasing.

He seems like a nice kid, sincere and shy, but I kind of got tired of his message and the many songs form his album "Postcards in the Sky." I wanted to hear something I knew, and I really didn't get there until the end.It was actually somewhat of a downer, hearing how he almost quit music and show biz.

It was reported by fans who met David in a pre-show Meet and Greet that he was sick, a congested  thing where he only answered in whispers to save his voice. Sick or not, his voice was clear and strong, maybe riding on adrenaline. His back-up band  ( three other guys) was tight.

I was disappointed that he didn't do John Lennon's "Imagine", a song which took him far on Idol. Maybe because he wasn't feeling well?

A nice treat was a song called "Paralyzed" from a new, upcoming album, and a brief snippet of the Oscar-winning song by Lady Gaga called "Shallow."

"Crush" ended the lively, often introspective set. For the first time seeing Archuleta live, it was a fun show. I just wish he would've did more familiar material.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS

- I got a feeling the Phillies will never be out of a game this season. Last season, if the team got behind you could pretty much count them out. This early season you know they will socre..and score a lot!

The Phils are 2-0 for the first time since 2011 ( when they won over 100 games) after a thrilling comeback win on Saturday over Atlanta. The Phils are exciting to watch as they crushed three more home runs, including Bryce Harper's first Phillie homer. Harper's shot landed into the right field upper deck, an estimated 465 feet.

Starter Nick Pivetta had a shaky outing. The young guys who make up the back-end of the rotation- namely Pivetta, Eflin and Valasquez- must step up. The hitting should keep the starters in games longer and erase some mistakes.

I didn't mind two Phillies getting thrown out  early in the game. Jean Segura was thrown out trying to move up to third base on a sacrifice fly to left field- a stupid move. He was a;ready in scoring position. Never make the  last out at third. But I do like the aggressiveness on the basepaths. I want to see the club steal and move runners along the bases, rather then wait for three-run homers.

Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that Franco wasn't traded to San Diego after all. He is off to a hot start, smashing a pair of homers and driving in five runs Hernandez is chipping in with key hits already. And catcher Realmuto is proving to be a major upgrade both offensively and defensively.  It will take time for the pitcihng to solidify. The Phillies are 2-0 already and one has a feeling the best is yet to come.

Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN for the first time at Citizens Bank Park since 2011. Jake Arrieta goes tonight against another Braves rookie. A sweep would be nice before the team heads to Washington for a quick two-game series against the Nationals.

- The Sixers won in Minnesota on Saturday night. Joel Embiid sat out and will be out the rest of this road trip. Games this week at the Bulls and at the Hawks should be winnable, but with Embiid, the 76ers were shocked recently in Atlana by the lowly Hawks. I need them to somehow lose two more games to win a pre-season wager.

- The Flyers were offically elinimated from playoff contention with their road loss in Carolina. Should the squad finally trade Claude Giroux and start looking to the future?

PEDIATRICIANS URGED TO COORDINATE THERAPY FOR KIDS WITH DISABILITIES

Disability Scoops offers the following article..

Doctors are being told to do more to ensure that children with disabilities have access to needed therapies while steering clear of unproven treatments.

Ina report out recently from the American Academy of Pediatrics, physicians are being encouraged to coordinate care with physical, occupational and speech therapists so that kids with disabilities can gain or recover important skills.

"The goals we have for children with disabilities are the same goals we have for all children- for them to be happy, healthy and able to participate fully in life," said Dr. Amy J. Houtrow, lead author of the report. "Physical, occupational and speech therapy can help children reach these goals by developing new skills, regain lost skills and accommodate for skills that may not be developed or regained."

The pediatrcians' group indicates that doctors should be as clear as possible when writing prescriptions for therapy. Nonetheless, the guidance acknowledges that determining the appropriate frequency and duration of therapy sessions "remains elusive and largely subjective."

"Strong collaboration between the family, the treating therapists, specialists and the pediatric medical home provider helps identify the best dosing strategies that consider the child's health, current functional status, goals, readiness for therapy, response to intervention and cessation of services, if warranted," the report states.

The guidance notes that an increasing number of children have neurodevelopmental conditions. While the report focuses on physical, occupational and speech therapy, it highlights that applied behavior analysis is often used for those with autism, but refers providers to a previously issued document with details about facilitating that treatment.

In addition to making sure that kids with disabilities have access to appropriate therapies, the guidance is also warning physicians against prescribing unproven approaches. One such treatment that the group is calling out is the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for cerebral palsy. This treatment has not be validated and could have harmful effects, the pediatricians' group said.

"Treatment success that is only supported by case reports or anecdotal data and not by carefully designed research studies warrants further investigation and discussion before prescribing," the guidance states.

REVIEW- THE YARDBIRDS CONCERT AT THE COLONIAL THEATER

The old 60's rock.blues group, the Yardbirds, returned to the beautiful  Colonial Theater in Phoenixville last night. They played to a good crowd, not quite a sell-out on a weeknight.  Drummer Jim McCarty is the only original member of the legendary band still around. The Yardbirds once boosted the likes of guitar gods  Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and  Robert Plant in their band. Their current members may not  be as iconic but the new Yardbirds are a tight ground with really good musicians.

Of course they did their more recognizable hits such as the opener "Heart Full Of Soul," "For Your Love," and other psychedelic pop/rock classics. Their 90-minute or so set consisted of long guitar riffs and solo spots form each member, especially an extended drum solo by the energetic McCarty.

A lot of old heads were there, baring silver long hair in ponytails and 60s type garb. The younger kids who were there, millennial age or younger, hopefully appreciated the band. The great video clips running behind the band on the Colonial's movie screen only enhanced the experience. At times i was mesmerized by the wonderful videos of the Yardbirds through the 60s.

The Colonial has great acoustics, being an older theater, so, other then one song being somewhat murky in the sound system, the music sounded great.

It's the second time in two years we have seen the Yardbirds in town. Hopefully they continue to return and keep the music alive.

The opening act was Greg Sover, doing a 30-minute guitar acoustic set with fellow band mate Greg Lee. Sover did one blues song but the rest was pure pop/rock. Sover ( who announced he will be appearing at Steel City Coffeehouse in mid-April) was enjoyable, friendly and funny.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, SIXERS

- You couldn't ask for a better Opening Day for the Phillies. Great , spring weather, a sell-out, excited crowd, and the debut of superstar Bryce Harper in Philadelphia. The defending National League East champion Atlanta Braves were the evil opponent. Ace Aaron Nola was on the mound for the good guys. Who could ask for more?

The first Phillie up in the first game hit a home run. Andrew McCuthen may be the biggest surprise this season. We pretty much know what Harper will do but if McCuthen can come anywhere near what he accomplished in Pittsburgh for so many years the Phillies truly will be a dangerous team.

There is no end to the line-up. McCuthen leads off and can supply power as he did yesterday. He could also walk and steal a base. The options are unlimited with Cuth.

Segura will hit .300 and do the little things needed to win. If teams pitch around Harper there is Hoskins hitting behind him, capable of bashing grand slams as he did in the opener. Realmuto should crank 20 or more home runs and hit around .300. Herrera, Hernandez and Franco lurk near the bottom of the order, providing no break for an enemy hurler, all able to hit with power.

Last year, two outs in an inning meant wait til next inning to score. Not anymore. The team is like a DeSean Jackson a football field- able to score anywhere, anytime.

I don't expect the Phils to score 10 runs every game. But they will be exciting. If one guy is slumping there are plenty of bats to pick up the slack. They sent a message to the Braves, and to the rest of the National league. I can't wait until they face the Mets with deGrom and Synderguard. Classic power pitchers vs classic power hitters.

Most of all, Opening Day was just a taste of things to come in South Philly. Times have changed, as the Phillies actually won on Opening Day. They play Saturday afternoon against Atlanta then close out the season Sunday night on ESPN before heading to Washington for Harpers' first visit back to his old stomping grounds.

- Eagles GM Howie Rossman did it again. He stole a good running back to fill the void in the Birds' backfield, trading for Jordan Howard from the Bears for a 6th or possibly 5th round draft pick in 2020. Howard tailed-off a bitlast year, and he's not the pass catcher the Eagles like in their backs, but he is a solid runner and he's only 24. This is his last year on his rookie deal. It's a low-risk situation for Philly. If he performs well this fall, Rossman can re-sign him. Mys ense is that the Eagles still draft a  young back next month, possibly in the 4th round, where they have twp selections.

- The Sixers bounced back Thursday night win a home victory against Brooklyn. As always, Joel Embiid led the way, scoring 39 points and collecting 13 rebounds. They need to win 6 of their last 8 games to total 54 wins, more than last season, as they enter the playoffs.

IN THE NEWS- DeVOS UNDER FIRE FOR PLAN TO DEFUND SPECIAL OLYMPICS

From Disability Scoop..

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is defending her agency's plan to end federal funding for a program that benefits children with disabilities.

DeVos stood behind a proposal to cut all $17.6 million in federal funding for Special Olympics. Her comments came in response to questions from lawmakers during a House of Representatives committee hearing on President Donald Trump's budget proposal for the next fiscal year, which begins in October.

"I just have to say, madam secretary, you have zeroed out special Olympics once again  I still can't understand  why you would go after disabled children in your budget. you zero that out. It's appalling," Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., told DeVos during the hearing.

Subsequently, Rep. Mark Pocan., D-Wis., sought answers from Devos about the plan.

'Do you know how many kids are going to be affected by that cut?" Pocan asked.

'We had to make some difficult decisions  with this budget," Devos said before acknowledging that she did not know the number.

"It's 272,000 kids that are affected," Pocan informed her.

"I think that Special Olympics is an awesome organization, one that is well supported by the philanthropic sector as well,' DeVos added.

This is not the first time that Trump's budget proposal has eliminated funding for Special Olympics. Congress has rejected previous calls from the administration to defund the program.

DeVos noted that the Education Department budget request includes level funding for grants under the individuals with Disabilities Education Act at $13.2 billion within a spending plan that reflects a 10 percent reduction overall. However, advocates have warned in the past that maintaining funding does not necessarily yield the same services since It does not account for inflation.

The education secretary has been supportive of Special Olympics in other ways, having donated a portion of her salary to the nonprofit last year.

In a statement recently, Devos sought to further clarify her position. She highlighted that Special Olympics is a private organization- not a federal program- that raises over $100 million annually.

"I love its work, and I have personally supported its mission," Devos said. "There are dozens of worthy nonprofits that support students and adults with disabilities that don't get a dime of federal grant money. But given our current budget realities, the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations.'

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS, EAGLES

- Opening Day! Nothing like it in sports. The weather is warming up, just in time for baseball. The Phillies open their season at home this afternoon when Aaron Nola faces the defending National League East champion Atlanta Braves. Buy a program or save your ticket stub as it will be Bryce Harper's  first game in a Phillies uniform.

Important to get off to a fast start, especially against the Braves. Important for Harper to continue his love affair with the Philadelphia fans. Important for the team to shine in front of a sell-out Opening Day crowd.

Fundamentals..the club needs to execute. Too often last season the players failed to do the basics such as catching the baseball. They couldn't bunt or move runners or hit sacrifice flies. Scoring runs was a challenge.

Offense should not be a problem in 2019. Sure, there will be the normal ups and downs in any season. But generally, the team should hit. Manager Gabe Kapler will manage even more like he's in the American League by allowing Harper and the other power hitters in his new and improved line-up to hit three-run homers.

Guys like Quinn, Kingery, McCuthen and Herrera will bring speed. Harper and Hoskins will primarily bring the power.Williams and Altherr will bring pop and flexibility off the bench.

Beyond Nola, the starters need to step up. With the deep bullpen the starters such as Arrieta, Valasquez, Eflin and Pivetta need to give the team six or seven solid innings consistently. The bullpen will take it from there.

Kapler can't get crazy with line-up changes, yanking starters too early, his relievers not having regular roles, and general analytics nonsense. Kapler will be on the hot seat if he doesn't win. The owners didn't invest tons of money to see the manger screw it up.

Per Las Vegas, the over/under on the Phillies' win total is 89. Would you go higher or lower? The Phils won 80 games in 2018. 90 or above wins should get the Phillies into the playoffs.

I would go over and also go over on Harper's home run total ( 33 or over).

I would also bet on the Phillies winning the NL East. The World Series? I think they get there, play Houston and lose. But being National League champs ain't bad.

Today, let's make it a Phillies victory, 5-2 over Atlanta.

My first Phillies game this season is a week from Sunday vs Minnesota.

- The Flyers' slight playoff hopes stayed alive last night with a 5-4 shoot-out win over the Maple Leafs. meanwhile the Sixers play yet another big game tonight in South Philly against Brooklyn. After two lackluster losses on the road this week, to weaklings Atlanta and Orlando, it's key for the 76ers to rebound tonight in front of their home crowd and make a playoff push. With nine games remaining in the regular season the Sixers don't want to limp into the post-season. Hot teams usually do well in the playoffs. Plus they do want to rest some players, including Joel Embiid, as the long season winds down and the hectic  playoff crunch begins.

- I was at the magnificent Eagles Pro Shop in Lancaster yesterday. Jason was a terrific sales guy as I went old school and got a new kelly green Eagles' shirt and cap- plus a huge Eagle-head magnet to stick on the dishwasher. No need for fans in the suburbs to drive all the way to Lincoln Financial Field to meet their Bird needs. Check out the store in Lancaster!

PHILLIES PHODDER- BASEBALL PREVIEW

- This promises to be an exciting baseball season, which starts later this week, not only in Philadelphia, but elsewhere. Here are some highlights to look forward to:

* Arch-rivals Yankees and Red Sox play a pair of games in London, England in August.
* The Yankees and Dodgers play each other at Dodger Stadium this summer.
* The All-Star Game will be in Cleveland for a record 6th time.
* The season opens in Tokyo, Japan this week when the A;s face the Mariners.
* Fresh off his record-setting new contract, Mike Trout will play for the first time in St. Louis, the only Major League city he has yet to play in.
* The San Francisco Giants have a scheduled doubleheader against Arizona in June.
* The Pirates and Cubs play in  this summers' Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa. in August.

Here are my predictions and comments..

National League East

1. Phillies
2. Nationals
3. Braves
4. Mets
5. Marlins

Phillies: Needless to say, after getting Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Andrew McCuthen, Jean Segura  and David Robertson during the off-season, the Phils will be expected to contend. Add these stars to a team that spent a good deal of the 2018 summer in 1st place. Aaron Nola will lead the rotation which must step up. Expect the Phillies to make deals in July before the trade deadline. Ownership didn't spend the money they did to not upgrade. Manager Gabe Kapler needs to get off to a fast start or else his job may be in jeopardy.

Nationals: Without Harper the Nats are still good, with Soto in the outfield and a great starting rotation of Schurzer, Strasberg and Corbin. But somehow Washington always seems to choke. They couldn't get into the playoffs with Harper. Why should they suddenly make the post-season without him?

Braves: Can the young Braves repeat in the East? Their starting pitching already is battling injuries out of spring training. Atlanta will contend because they have an endless pipeline to their great farm system and they have solid vets like Freddie Freeman.

Mets: With the duo of deGrom and Synderguuard, the Mets should avoid long losing streaks. Robinson Cano bolsters the lineup. But in stacked NL East are they good enough?

Marlins: Will easily lose 100 games or more. How soon will ex-Phillie phenom Sixto Sanchez make it to Miami?

National League Central

1. Cardinals
2. Brewers
3. Cubs
4, Pirates
5. Reds

Cardinals: I'm picking the Cards to win the NL Central. They traded for and extended 1st baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Andrew Miller is in their bullpen now. Like Atlanta, they have an open pipeline to their farm system.

Brewers: Still strong, with reigning MVP Christian Yelich. I think they make the playoffs as a wild card.

Cubs: Still good but the rest of the central is improving. Will Cole Hamels help the rotation? Will they eventually extend or trade Kris Bryant?

Pirates: The Buccos are slowly building a young, talented team. Theyv'e had to take one step back to go forward. They play in a tough division and won't contend seriously this summer.

Reds: An up and coming team. Losing 2nd baseman Scooter Ginnette to a groin strain for 2-3 months hurts. Will be interesting how ex-Dodgers Kemp and Puig do in Cincinnati.Still has Joey Votto so they will compete.

National League West

1. Dodgers
2. Rockies
3. Giants
4. Diamondbacks
5. Padres

Dodgers; I would love to pick against Los Angeles for once, but who will beat them? They still have a strong club, and they get Corey Seager back.

Rockies; Solid team, but do they have enough to overtake L.A.?

Giants: Will they deal Madison Baumgartner to the Phils this summer if they aren't contending?

D-Backs: Greinke may be the next to go. After coming close in NL West, Arizona is retooling.

Padres: Manny Machado era begins. Will the excellent San Diego prospects start to pay off?

Wild Cards: Brewers, Nationals

National League Champions: Phillies

American League East

1. Yankees
2. Red Sox
3. Rays
4. Blue Jays
5. Orioles

Yankees: It's New York's turn to overtake Boston in a fierce battle all summer long.  How many homers will Stanton and Judge combine to hit? 100?

Red Sox: No reason to think they will not win again. but everything went right for the Bosox last year.Chris Sale vs Stanton/Judge is classic.

Rays: Won 90 games in 2018 in the same division with NY and Bos,. plus small payroll team. Good, young team

Blue Jays: Can't win in the AL East. Waiting for Val Guererro Jr. to arrive.

Orioles: May lose 115 games?

American League Central

1. Indians
2. Twins
3. White Sox
4. Tigers
5. Royals

Indians: No problems winning the Central again. Can they reach the World Series with the Red Sox, Yankees and Astros around?

Twins: Another young squad with an eye to the future or a wild card spot.

White Sox: Building but missed out on Harper and Machado, which slows down process

Tigers; Still have Cabrera to stay somewhat competitive
Royals: Remember a few years ago when Kansas City seemed to be in the Series every year?

American League West

1. Astros
2. Angels
3. Rangers
4. Mariners
5. A's

Astros: Will win the West again. They are strong enough to reach the Series again.

Angels: Trout celebrates new contract by leading Halos to wild card spot.

Rangers; Young talent creeps closer.

Mariners: Played well last season but will miss Cano

A's: Young and building again.

Wild cards: Angels, Red Sox

American League Champs: Astros

World Series: Astros over Phillies

IDOL CHATTER- HOLLYWOOD WEEK, PART 2

More American Idol and Hollywood Week last night. More solo performances. More drama as the cut down to 40 contestants was made.

During promos it showed Katie Perry crying a tone point. Right away I thought something bad had happened, especially regarding the kid who was 'rushed" to the hospital.

As it turned out the kid was fine, returning the same night. But he still couldn't sing and he ended up getting the ax. Katie was crying because one of the contestants got engaged ( she also made it through to the next round).

This season if you forget the words ( always a cardinal sin) you may get the boot or may stay. Several more Idol-wannabes forgot the lyrics, or changed their song choice at the last minute. Most were shown the door, but one kid, a heavy-set guy with high, greasy hair, not only messed up "California Dreaming" on Sunday night, but he screwed up the words again Monday night, yet he made it into the top 40.

My favorite from the auditions, Ashley Hess, did make it to the next round, but strangely, her performance wasn't shown. She's a beautiful girl with a great voice and yet they Idol producers choose to focus on a nerdy guy like Eddie Island ( who also made it through).

Juan Pablo, the Mexican crooner, was cut. Too cheesy and gimmicky. Whereas Alejandro, the hot greatest auditioner that the judges ever seen, predictably went on. I think he makes it to the Top 10, but beyond that?

The legally blind singer named Shayy made it through. She admitted to being "really nervous" but was successful in making the next round. I hope she sticks around.

No real rock n' roller this season like last season. Not as many country artists. And what originally looked like a strong female singing  base has flipped to the guys having the stronger voices.

Idol continues next Sunday in Hawaii. The competition pares down from 40 to 20, then to 14. The first live show will air on April 14.

PHILLIES PHODDER- 2019 PREVIEW

- The Phillies went 80-82 last season, despite an epic and historic meltdown in August and September. With the additions of stars Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Andrew McCuthen, David Robertson and Jean Segura, the team should be  significantly better. After spending most of the summer in first place last season, anything less than being a contender for National League East will be disappointing.

Either way, it should be an exciting season at improved Citizens Bank Park. I'll be there nine times this spring and summer with an additional game in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.

Here are my thoughts on the roster and the upcoming season:

Manager-

Gabe Kapler will be on the hot seat, starting with Opening Day on Thursday. Ownership has spent too much money to have wacky moves by the manager, such as odd use of the bullpen, quick pitching changes of the starters, questionable shift moves on defense, numerous lineup changes, and stupid analytical decisions through out the year ruin what could be a playoff season and beyond.

Kapler needs to get off to a fast start or else questions will arise as we move toward Memorial Day.  This is the second year of a three-year contract for Kapler. He could earn an extension with a good year or get fired somewhere during the season.

Catcher-

J.T. Realmuto is a huge upgrade at catcher over Jorge Alfaro in all waysboth offensively and defensively. Realmuto will probably hit fifth in the lineup[ and should have a big year hitting in CBP, as he hit better on the road last season than in spacious Miami.

Andrew Knapp will be the backup and will probably start once a week. He's a switch-hitter and will give the club punch off the bench.

Signing Realmuto to a long term contract should be a priority for Phillies management, especially since there really isn't a catching prospect in the minors right now.

Infield-

Rhys Hoskins should also have a huge year. He is hitting behind Bryce Harper so he should see more fastballs. He is back at first base where he belongs, which should ease his mind both in the field and at the plate.  Hoskins should hit at least 30 home runs again.

Cesar Hernandez will open the season at second base. He is a free agent after the season. The team will let him walk so they can play Scott Kingery at his natural position, especially after giving Kingery a $24 million contract ( a mistake?). Hernandez is a switch-hitter and can hit lead-off, as he did in 2018, but I like McCuthen hitting first, so Cesar will probably hit lower in the order. defensively he is solid. He can run but doesn't use his speed enough. Cesar is a good bunter and will get his share of infield hits, as well as hit between 10-15 home runs.

At shortstop, another huge upgrade in All-Star Jean Segura. He will probably hit second, at least to start-off the season. Segura is an athletic shortstop, and, compared to J.P. Crawford, is worlds ahead of him in all ways.

Maikel Franco sort of won third base by default. Since the Phillies didn't sign Manny Machado or another free agent, Franco gets another shot at being the Phillies' everyday third sacker. Franco is still only 26. He can hit 20-25 homers, play solid third base and doesn't have to carry the lineup now.

Scott Kingery will be the infield reserve. Kingery can also play center field. It's a big year for "Jet-pack." He needs to show his potential when he does play. Granted, he won't get the regular at-bats he should. But Kingery needs to make contact, use his speed and show the front office it's OK to allow Hernandez to walk after the season, or even attempt to trade him in July for pitching.

Outfield-

Of course, Bryce Harper will patrol right field this summer and for 12 more summers after that. He is the name to sell tickets, jerseys and bring excitement back to the Phillies, as well as hit 40-50 home runs. He should hit third in the batting order and influence the order just by his presence. Harper needs to stay healthy. He is entering his prime at 26, and has a desire to reach the playoffs, play in the World Series and win a championship, things he never got to do in Washington. Hopefully the fans won't get down on Harper if/when he slumps. Getting off to a fast start not only helps the club in the standings ( especially since so many April games are against NL East foes), but rallies the already excited fans to his side.

Odubel Herrera needs to step it up as well or else a healthy Roman Quinn or someone else ( Altherr, Kingery Heasley) will replace him in center field. He can't be lazy anymore, not running out ground balls or sleeping on the basepaths. He needs to stay focused. With his unorthodox style (leg kick) at the plate, it's easy for Herrera to get into slumps by losing his timing. With all the veteran hitters now in the lineup hopefully Herrera's slumps won't last as long.

Andrew McCuthen will bring a professionalism to the Phils, both on the field and in the clubhouse. The former MVP will hit lead-off. He takes walks, can still hit home runs and has speed on the bases. McCuthen will play left field but has played right field and even center field in a pinch.

Nick Williams and Aaron Altherr are the outfield reserves. Williams won't get the at-bats he wants but he should be  the main pinch-hitter off the bench, a role he excelled at in 2018 when he wasn't playing regularly. Williams could also be traded for pitching in July. Altherr could also play everyday in the outfield, but after having a disappointing 2018 he needs to show management that he is more than a bench player. He could also be trade bait down the road.

Starting Pitching-

Aaron Nola is the ace and should be even better after his contract was extended. Winning 20 games isn't out of the question. Beyond Nola there are question marks. Can Nick Pivetta finally have a break-out season as the # 2 starter? Will Jake Arrieta bounce back after a shaky 2018 and an equally shaky spring training, or is he on the decline? Can Zack Eflin improve upon his good season last year? What about Vince Valasquez, who continues to strike hitters out and struggle with control, location and high pitch-counts. Is Valasquez destined for the bullpen as a long-man or closer?

Bullpen-

Will Kapler finally give his relief pitchers a role or will he do as he did last season and mix-and-match? Siranthony Dinguez or David Robertson should close, but knowing Kapler, you may see them get key outs anywhere from the sixth inning on. Adam Morgan is back as the left-handed option. Pat Neshek is the seventh inning guy who can't pitch back-to-back games. I don't trust Hector Neris after watching him implode in Los Angeles and Washington in the past.

Overall, the Phillies seem to have it all- youth ( many of their core players are just entering together into their prime) and veteran leadership; power and speed. their defense should be much improved. Pitching will be the key to the Phillies success. The front office can't be afraid to upgrade the roster during the season, and maybe most importantly of all, the manager can't blow games by making dumb decisions in the name of analytics.

There's no reason why Philadelphia can't win the East, make the playoffs and take their chances this season. Time to start winning. The rebuild is finally over. The long-suffering fans can start enjoying their team winning again.  No more will visiting fans take over the park. Sell-outs will prevail and get even more frequent as the summer rolls along and wins increase. Plus we may finally have a pennant race in September.

My Major league Preview will be on the blog tomorrow, including my predictions ( I had the Indians winning it all last season-I was wrong). Please check it out!

IDOL CHATTER- HOLLYWOOD WEEK

- Interesting and entertaining episode of American Idol last night. Hollywood Week can be interesting as we follow our favorites form the auditions.  The two hours on Sunday night flew by quickly as they got through solo performances and group songs with more to come tonight. Hopefully the final cuts are made to 24.

Last season Hollywood  Week seem to drag on endlessly for weeks, so maybe the producers got the message and will save more time for the live shows. Back in the Simon-Randy-Paula days, the final 24 would sing live, 12 contestants per show and the group was then sliced down to 14 and ultimately the Top Ten.

My favorite, Ashley Hess, the dental hygienist, made it through but was only mentioned once, not a good sign. The guy who sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" by "Betty Midler" really butchered the song but somehow made it to the next level. He sang it to his ailing mom, who was having surgery the following day.

There were a few instances of singers forgeting the lyrics. As Simon used to lecture, that's the cardinal sin of Idol, forgetting the words. It's one thing to be nervous, but you have all day to practice and learn the words, there should be no excuse.

Rightfully so, a female contestant was given the ax for forgetting her lyrics, whereas another guy singer made it through, even though he completely messed up The Mamas and Papas  "California Dreamin'", which he claimed he had never heard before.  If you are gonna sing the song in such an important competition, why not Google it and listen to it?

Juan Pablo, the Mexican diva, is proving to be a drama queen. Georgies, an openly-gay singer, got the boot. The young widow, who's story was touching, got nervous and choked. The young kid with Cystic Fibrosis, the same kid Luke Bryan sang with and gave his guitar to, was sent packing.

Katie had a cold and was sneezing everywhere, but after some initial drama, the judges pretty much were seriously about their work of more auditions and scaling down the singers to 98.

There was the usual suspense of a contestant being taken to the hospital by ambulance ( supposedly form the flu, although I believe some of these kids can't cut it as singers and may try to gracefully ease out of the competition by claiming they are "sick."

The favorites such as Alejandro again shined brightly  last night. He's a really good musician/guitarist, but as a singer? Not sure I would buy a CD of his. Shayy, the blind female singer, was just OK, but her group helped he quite a bit, as she was having a hard time learning the words to her songs because she can't read the lyrics. She made it, but she is limited in what she can do.

Can't wait for tonight. Hopefully things keep moving along and we don't get bogged down like last season.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS, EAGLES. NCAA BASKETBALL

- Today is the final day of spring training, as the Phillies close out their Grapefruit League schedule with a game against the Rays. The team will be flying back to Philadelphia tonight, preparing for their opener on Thursday vs Atlanta. My Phillies 2019 preview can be found elsewhere on my blog.

Rhys Hoskins is nursing a sore shoulder but should be ready for Opening Day. Aaron Nola will be pitching against the Braves. Getting off to a fast start will be important for the Phils, not only in National League East, but for the sake of Manager Gabe Kapler.  Coming out of April with a losing record may not bode well for Kapler. I'm sure GM Matt Klentak will want to give Kapler some slack but after spending tons of money this off-season, especially $330 million for superstar Bryce Harper, Phillies' ownership won't stand for mediocrity. if Kapler makes wacky decisions with his pitching staff, his shifting, his lineups and analytics, is Dusty Warthen far behind as interim manager?

- After reeling off six straight wins and taking hold of the # 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Sixers lost in Atlanta Friday night against a lowly Hawks club. Good news for me, as I have a bet riding that the 76ers won win 54 games this season ( they need to win 7 of their final 9 games.

The Sixers could go far in the playoffs. Witness their recent thrilling victories over Milwaukee and Boston. Last year they finished the season winning 16 game sin a row. That won't happen this year. Inconsistency has to also be a concern. So does Coach Brett Brown and his strategy in close games.

They play tonight in Orlando against the Magic.

- The Flyers lost two key games over the weekend. Saturday they lost their third consecutive home game, this time to the Islanders. On Sunday afternoon they got swept by defending Stanley Cup champion Washington. The Flyers are now eight points out of a playoff spot with only six games to play in the season.

Jacob Voracek said the squad "choked"  whenever they got close to securing a playoff spot.  Tough talk but I like his honesty.

The team is stocked with young, upcoming players and vets. Obviously they need an overhaul as they are going nowhere with their current roster.

Will there be a new permanent coach? Yes. Is rookie goalie Carter Hart the guy to build around/ Yes. I don't like Brian Elliot as a back-up. Remaking the Orange and black will be interesting this summer.

- The NFL Owners meeting occurs this week. League rule changes, Eagles owner Jeff Lurie will speak, more free agency moves... things to look forward to this week. the draft is only a month away while the entire NFL will be released in a few weeks.

Patriots' tight end Rob Kronkowski unexpectedly retired over the weekend, which can't help New England. Ex-Eagle wide receiver Jeremy Maclin also retired.

It will be interesting if the league fines or otherwise  punishes Patriots' owner Robert Kraft for his prostitution charges. He's a billionaire but he should be no different form the players and coaches when it comes to league rules and discipline.

- I'm not into the NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament, but i will say it was nice to see Villanova get destroyed by Purdue. They have another amazing recruiting class next year so expect the Wildcats to be back. But poor Jay Wright can't win the national championship every year. Nice to see Nova Nation get a little humbled.

Meanwhile the fallout continues for St. Joseph's after they fired head coach Phil Martelli. Several recruits, including to City player Hakeem Hart from Roman Catholic, have de-committed to the Hawks. Rumors are that former St. Joe's stand-out Jameer Nelson may become the next coach. His son has been recruited to play for the Hawks next season. Nelson would bring youth and a name to the program, but it won't take away the bitter aftermath of the Martelli axing. St. Joseph's is public enemy # 1 in the Big Five now, even worse than Villanova.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- MARCH 22

Wolfpack top Bruins

In 1974, North Carolina State, behind the scoring of David Thompson, ended UCLA's run of seven consecutive NCAA championships- as well as the Bruins' 38-game NCAA tournament winning streak with a classic double-overtime victory in the NCAA semifinals.

UCLA's early departure in the NCAA tournament almost came against Dayton in the regional semifinals, when the bruins needed three overtimes to beat the Flyers. Coach Norm Sloan would win the first of the Wolfpack's two national titles two nights later by defeating Marquette University, 76-64.

North Carolina State 80. UCLA 77, Greensboro, North Carolina

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, ST JOE'S , EAGLES, FLYERS, BOSTON

- Bryce Harper smashes his first two home runs of the spring, leading the team to a 13--run uprising yesterday in Clearwater. The Phils hit six homers and gave the fans a taste of things to come. All of this with Rhys Hoskins out of the lineup with a sore shoulder.

Opening Day is less than a week away. I can't wait for the reaction to Harper at Citizens Bank Park. Thursday is supposed to be a nice spring day. A sell-out crowd should be boisterous in South Philly. Plus let's not forget it's against the defending National League East winners, the Atlanta Braves. At least taking two of three from Atlanta would get the Phils off to a fast start.

Andrew McCuthen cracked a long home run and almost had another, a drive that was halted by a strong Florida breeze.

Vince Valasquez went three-plus innings and had another uneven outing. Vince struck out nine yet struggled all afternoon. Valasquez will probably start the year in the bullpen since the team won't need a fifth starter until mid-April.

Final cuts are happening. One of the sole remaining questions will be the last bench spot. Looks like either Aaron Altherr or Sean Rodriguez will stick with the team. Altherr can play all three outfield positions, adds power to the bench and speed. Rodriguez can play all positions but catcher and brings a certain fight to the roster.

- Backlash continues over the firing of former St Joseph's head basketball coach Phil Martelli, especially after his tearful interview on WIP-Sports Radio this morning. Many agree that it had to be done, since the Hawks had three straight losing season while their arch-rival, Villanova, not only made the NCAA tournament but won the National Championship two out of three seasons. It was the cold, calculated way Martelli's firing was handled by the bitchy athletic director and St Joe administration.

The alumni may have won the battle, getting Martelli fired, but did they lose the war? The area is very anti-St Joe's now. If you are a recruit, with all the turmoil, no coach on board, no loyalty, would you go to St Joseph's now?

They need to hire a new guy ASAP to start turning the page. It would be nice if the university president said something too. Otherwise, their motto "The Hawk will never die" will ring hollow as it feels like "the" Hawk himself indeed die in the last few days.

- The Eagles resigned defensive end Vinny Curry to a one-year deal. A good move by GM Howie Rossman but the team isn't getting any younger ( the Birds are the eigthth older squad in the NFL). They still need to address running back and linebacker, either in free agency or in the upcoming draft.

I'm OK with older guys like Curry coming back on short term deals, just let them but supplemental players. Keep the core young. The draft will be huge in April, as the Eagles need speed and youth, two things they lack.

- The Flyers won last night in Chicago over the Blackhawks to move to four points from a wild card spot in the playoffs, with only eight games remaining. It seems like they have been desperately climbing out of a hole all season. Even if they manage to  get into the playoffs, will they have enough left to survive a round or two?

- It's so much fun having a rivalry with Boston again. Wednesday night was great, finally beating the Celtics at home. If the Sixers and Celts meet in the NBA playoffs it will be a classic series.

Is till recall the days of Dr. J. and Moses vs Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. Fans talk about Boston- Los Angeles, but it's always been Philly-Boston.

Boston has won it's share of championships, from the Red Sox to the Patriots, to the Celtics and Bruins.Boston has always been the real evil empire, not New York. How many championships has New York won lately?

The Bosox are great now but, led by Harper, the Phillies should be good as well for many years. The Sixers are young and have the best player in Joel Embiid in any Sixer-Celtic match up. After Tom Brady is gone will the Patriots still dominate?

Boston may be the title city now but Philadelphia is the future. And the passion flows whenever a Boston team comes to town. The Red Sox will be back in town this September. The Patriots visit the Eagles sometime in the fall. I've missed the rivalry and hopefully it's back.

World Series

Which team was swept in the World Series the most times?

A. Cubs
B. Yankees
C. Cardinals
D. A's

Answer: B.

The Yankees were swept by the Gaints in 1922, by the Dodgers in 1963, and by the Reds in 1976. On the other hand, the Yankees swept their World Series opponent eight times.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-SIXERS, PHILLIES

The Sixers won a big game last night, finally beating Boston 118-115. Joel Embiid sparkled with 37 points and 22 rebounds, while Jimmy Butler hit the shot that sealed the game.

Rather than rehash the game, I want to write about Embiid and the Philadelphia-Boston rivalry.

Embiid is not only the face of the 76ers, he is the face of{Philadelphia sports right now. He can do it all on the basketball court. Embiid can score, hit 3-point shots, rebound, block shots and more. He is fun and entertaining to watch. He is young and wants to win. His only downside is his health. I Embiid stays healthy he can be one of the greatest Sixers ever.

Wilt Chamberlain was immortal. but he couldn't make his free throws let alone shoot a jumper.  Allen Iverson was perhaps the best little guy ever, but, as a guard, he couldn't rebound  or block shots. Charles Barkley was fantastic but he didn't have the overall game  of Embiid.

It's no coincidence that the Sixers were floundering when Jojo was out with a sore knee after the All-Star break. Since he returned the team is 4-0, including big wins over Milwaukee and now the Celtics. The 76ers will go as far as Embiid takes them. I give them a good shot in every playoff series they play just because of Embiid. In every series the Sixers should have the best player (Embiid) on the court.

Philly needs to lock him up to a contract extension. Yes, his injuries are concerning and you hate to give away a boatload of guaranteed money to a guy who has had so many injuries over the years. But when he is right he is tremendous. Embiid may be right when he states "I'm the most unstoppable player in the league." Who would you rather have?

Nice to know that Embiid will be around a while. Like Bryce Harper with the Phillies visions of championships and victory parades are on the horizon.

- One week to go until Opening Day when the Phillies host the Atlanta Braves. Bryce Harper got his first hit of the spring yesterday in Florida vs the Tigers, lining a sharp single up the middle. Aaron Nola will pitch. Important for the Phils to get off to a fast start.Manager Gabe Kapler can't afford to have another shaky April. He is expected to win.

Looks like pitcher Tommy Hunter and speedy outfielder Roman Quinn will both begin the season on the DL. I don't care for Hunter but I am concerned about Quinn. He is a talented player when he is on the field. He seems like he is always hurt. When do the Phillies  give up on Quinn?

Quinn and Aaron Altherr are out of options. So soon it will be fish or cut bait. Will Nick Williams, an extra outfield with potential ( one of the reported players in the Fortnight scandal)be traded for starting pitching?

Nick Pivetta will start Game 2 of the Braves' series, with Jake Arrieta pitching Game 3, the ESPN Sunday Night opener. Zach Eflin will be the fourth starter as the Phils won't need a fifth starter until the middle of April. Look for Vince Valasquez to go to the bullpen until then.

I'll have my Phillies predictions and Baseball Preview next Monday on the blog. Please check it out then.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-MIKE TROUT, BG 5 BASKETBALL, SIXERS, FLYERS

- I'm not sure how I feel about Mike Trout this morning. In a way I get it. Trout would be stupid to refuse almost a half of a billion dollars, money guaranteed. What if he gets hurt? He is set for life and he's only 27-years-old.

In another way I'm disappointed. Trout is practically a hometown kid, his hometown being Millville, New Jersey. He has never said that he wanted to play for the Phillies even though he grew up a  Phillies fan. Trout is an Eagles season ticket holder. He is visible at the games, sitting in the first row in the end zone area.

So maybe we fans assumed too much, that just because Trout is a local guy he not only wanted to live in Millville for the rest of  his life, he also wanted to play in Philadelphia forever.

Maybe he felt the pressure would be too great. Trout can remain relatively unknown in Anaheim and still come home after the season. He could've waited another two years and still made the same money. The Phils not only set themselves up to afford Trout but Bryce Harper was openly campaigning for Trout to come to Philly in two years, to the point of almost tampering.

Still it wasn't enough to stop Trout from signing a record $430 million, 12-year contract with the Angels.

Maybe the Angels will do everything it takes to win now. They now have the seventh best farm system in baseball. They still have money to spend on future free agents. And a new stadium, or a renovation to Angels Stadium is on the way. Maybe Anaheim will finally get into the playoffs and actually win a game or a series.

Regardless, the Angels will always be second-class near Los Angeles. It's all Dodgers out west. They have the team, the money, the history and the tradition.

I would think it would be the exact opposite regarding pressure. Harper would take some of the slack  off Trout. But maybe Trout wanted to be the face of the franchise and didn't want to share the limelight with Harper?

It would've been worse if Trout did get to free agency and decided to sign with the Yankees, Mets or another Phillies rival.  Either way the Phils don't have Trout. The fans are feeling similar rejection and dejection as Washington fans felt recently when Bryce Harper choose the Phillies rather than the Nationals.

Mike could've owned Philly. Imagine the jerseys sold and the ticket sales. Harper went crazy with merchandise- imagine double that amount. Now it will be interesting if Eagle fans boo Trout at the football games.

Let's hope the Phillies and Harper someday meet the Angels and Trout in a World Series or two.East Coast Trout playing ot west; West Coast Harper plaiyng in the East. Classic!

He will always be a celebrity around the area. He may end up being the greatest baseball player ever. He could've been a Phillie for a dozen years or so. Trout made the choice He went for the money, the  California sun and the low-key life in Anaheim.  Now he has to live with that decision, especially when he comes home.

- As predicted, there's much emotional fall-out form the firing of long-time St. Joseph's basketball coach Phil Martelli. Maybe the university could've done a better job in letting Martelli go. Their statement was cold and even arch-rival Villanova's coach Jay Wright was more emotional when he learned of the firing. The St, Joe athletic director came off as all-business and not very caring. Perception is everything and the St. Joe administration looked cold and calculated in their decision.

But, in the end, it's was the right thing to do. Martelli spent 24 years as head coach. He had a losing record the last three years while Villanova won not one but two national championships. Their famed Holy war battles are not even competitive anymore. Martelli only took the hawks to March Madness two out of the last eleven years. He had to go.

St Joe's needs a fresh perspective. They need better recruiting to contend with Villanova. Temple is also starting off on a new foot with their coach Fran Dunphy retiring. Penn won the City Series this season and LaSalle is still trying to find its way. So it's a good time for the Hawks to make a new start.

Being a lifelong Hawk fan, I understood and support the decision to hire a new basketball coach. I'm sick of losing to the Wildcats every year and missing out on the NCAA tournament every year. I want the Hawks to be great again. I just didn't like the way Martelli was let go, a nice guy with a lot of class who deserved a better fate.

He just didn't win enough, and in this day of instant gratification and what have you done for me lately attitude, I;m actually surprised that Martelli lasted this long.

- Big game for the Sixers tonight, trying to finally beat the Celtics, again in South Philadelphia. They won without a resting Joel Embiid last nigh tin Charlotte. Bad news for me, who has the 76ers winning less than 54 games this season. They currently have 46 victories. It will be a close call but if they make their playoff push they should break the 54-win mark and break my hear tin doing so.

Tonight is big, not only to further cement their #3 seed in the East, but physocially, they Sixers need to prove that they can beat bosotn. As they did last Sunday in Milwaukee the Sixers can send a message with a win tonight.

- The Flyers lost at home on Tuesday night, Montreal beating them 3-1. The Flyers are still six points out of a playoff spot with only nine games left to play in the season. It doesn't look good for the Orange and Black, especially since they are not playing good hockey right now.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- BASEBALL, BIG 5 BASKETBALL

- ESPN reports this morning that Mike Trout and the Angels are close to finalizing a record contract extension- 12 years at $430 million.

I'm a little surprised that Trout is saying no to free agency and the Phillies. This extension will keep him in Anaheim for the remainder of his career. He is the best player in baseball, a sure Hall of Famer and one of the greatest players ever. So, I'm not surprised by the Angels wanting to lock up their superstar.

I guess Trout, despite being an Eagles season ticket holder and a Phillies fan while growing up in Millville, New Jersey, didn't want the pressure of playing for his hometown team. He has the best of both lives now- the glitz and beautiful weather of California, yet he can come back home every winter, with the snow and cold, and attend Eagle games and still be relatively faceless in the area.

The Angels are reportedly seeking either a new stadium or major renovations to Angel Stadium, so they must have big plans in order to shell out the biggest contract in sports history. Trout deserves it, as he is just entering his prime. When he can no longer cover the outfield Trout can be Anaheim's DH.

It's a win-win situation for Trout and the Angels. It's a loss for the Phillies, who made sure they still had plenty of money and flexibility left after signing Bryce Harper to a $330 million deal on March 1.

It will be interesting to see the reaction to Trout from now on in our area.

- St. Joseph's head basketball coach Phil Martelli was fired this morning atfer serving 24 years at the school. It's about time. Once again the Hawks underachieved this season. Martelli is a good guy but he was overrated as a coach and recruiter.

St. Joe's can do so much better ( see Villanova). The Hawks haven't been competitive in the city for years. They occasionally won Atlantic 10 tourneys but didn't go that far in the Big Dance. Martelli had a No. 1, undefeated squad in 2004 ( led by Jameer Nelson) and came within one lucky shot of making it to the Final Four.

The Hawks need a fresh face, a young coach who will bring new ideas and more blue-chip recruits to Hawk Hill. St. Joe hasn't been Villanova's rival for a long time. The Holy War hasn't mattered in a long time.

Maybe this is the unofficial death of the old Big 5 ( Temple's Fran Dunphy is retiring after the NCAA tournament). To me the Big 5 died a long time ago when City Series games stopped being played at the Palestra.

I'm sure Martelli was get his share of accolades in the next few days, but the bottom line is still winning, and for whatever reasons, Martelli just didn't win enough to keep his job.

IDOL CHATTER END OF AUDITIONS

- Auditions ended last night on American Idol. It was a fun few weeks where we met a good abundance of quality singers, witness numerous human interest stories, and brought us even closer to the judges.

I still think we have already seen the next Idol ( Ashley Hess?) but there were more good singers on Monday night. I'm surprised they didn't make more of the Philadelphia auditions, as they seemed to focus more on New York City, Los Angeles and even Idaho.

I'm glad the annoying Catie Turner, who stopped by the Philly auditions to say hello, didn't try out again. Caleb also dropped in to support a friend ( who didn't make it) and Idol winner last season, Maddie Poppie, was disguised as a Goth horror-chick and surprised all by singing "The Rainbow Connection," her trademark song so far.

Katie Perry swooned over a young male singer who will probably go far just on looks alone. There have been plenty of 16-year-old teenage girls on this season, it was time to add a heartthrob on the scene for young girls.

The judges seemed more fair and honest this time around. Luke seems more at ease along with Katie, while Lionel takes his role as older mentor. Although i still miss Simon Cowell I have to admit that this set of judges work well together and seem to like each other.

Another Sunday/Monday duo of shows next weekend, starting the infamous Hollywood Week. Hopefully they keep this part to a few shows and not drag it out like lase season, to the point that the live shows seemed rushed. Pare it down to the Top Ten then go week by week as in the old days

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- ESPN reported that ex-Phillie Carlos Santana  smashed a TV in the clubhouse last September with a bat because unnamed players were playing video games during baseball games.

Apparently a few of the 2018 Phils- reportedly Nick Williams and J.P. Crawford- not only were obsessed with Fortnight, but left the dugout during baseball games, sneaking back into the clubhouse to play video games. Since the manager and front office were either blind to this or unwilling to do anything about it, Santana took it into his own hands.

First, this is Manager Gabe Kapler's fault. If he didn't know what was going on, he is guilty of having his head up his ass. If he did know and still let it happen, he is guilty of being a puppet to the younger players and having absolutely no control of his team.

The video gaming apparently happened all season but came to a nasty head during the team's ugly nine-game losing streak during the final home stand of the season.

Why didn't General Manager Matt Klentak do anything? It's ridiculous to think certain players were so obsessed they couldn't break away from Fortnight for three hours a day? They are getting paid big bucks to play a game and cheer their teammates on in the dugout.

What's more, the Phillies billed Santana for the pulverized TV. To me, Santana is a hero. Ironically, he is gone, playing for the Indians now. After a disappointing season from Santana, his actions in the clubhouse may be the most valuable thing he ever did with the team.

How did the subject come up with ESPN? Why didn't the local media have this story 6 months ago?

Crawford was traded to the Mariners during the off-season. Williams remains with the club, be it as a part-time player since the arrival of Andrew McCuthen and Bryce Harper in the outfield.

Kapler promises tighter rules this season. Somebody needs to be running the show. Ironic that Kapler preaches to his players about eating right, working-out and getting plenty of rest, yet guys are playing video games during games and perhaps at home and in hotels late at night.

This morning it was reported that Kapler told his players behind closed doors to keep it quiet. Kapler is so on the hot seat this spring. After the historical collapse last summer, the alleged sexual assault issues with the Dodgers and now this hotel mess, if Kapler doesn't get off to a fast start he may not see the light of day far into the season. Management didn't pay all this money for guys like Harper only to see the season screwed by a manager who already was shaky with his analytical attitude.

IDOL CHATTER

- Another strong night of American Idol, including the possible winner of the competition..

- Ashley Hess. Remember the name. I have a funny feeling about her. She may win American Idol this season. I feel about her as I did when I first saw Carrie Underwood.

Ashley is 27, a pretty blond who was a dental hygienist. She sings like she talks. Her voice is clear, not strained. She plays effortlessly at the piano. She seems modest and awestruck, not slick and show biz. Natural. I think she can win.

-Another gorgeous contestant ( there are more hot girls this season than in other years) is named Evelyn. High-cheek bones, silky-smooth voice. Evelyn is the total packet as well. The girl who has two moms- her "egg donor" mom and her real mother. She can sing!

The 19-year-old sexy girl who seems older. Luke faked fainting by her. She won't win but she does possess a certain quality. The girl who has "tight curls" and sings erratically  but has something about her. The Country kid who's mom walked away when he was nine- very raw, unploished voice, yet has potential. The heavyset male nurse who sounds like the lead singer from Rascal Flatts won't win.

Very interesting contestants Sunday night. Plus they showed more bad auditions than ever this season.

More Idol tonight, yes Monday night! The last of the auditions, including Philadelphia. The annoying Caty Turner stops by. Hopefully the judges don't talk her into auditioning again.

Next week starts Hollywood Week. Let's hope it's shorter this time, with more live episodes down the road. Hollywood should be interesting as I can think of at least five legitimate singers who can win. Less gimmicky singers this year. Same human interest, sappy stories, but good, quality talent.

The last touching story on Sunday night was real- the young ( 27) widow who tearfully sang for her late young husband. she can go far.

As always, people get to Hollywood then fizzle-out. Maybe nerves get to them, or they just weren't good enough to begin with, but Hollywood seems to separate the talent from the wannabes.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, FLYERS

- Big win for the Sixers Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee. By beating the best team in the NBA, on their home court, the 76ers showed they can play with the better teams. They have won four game sin a row, all after Joel Embiid came back from a knee injury. Philly will only go as far as Jojo takes them. Johnny Butler has stepped it up lately, but the Sixers will live and die with Embiid.

By beating the bucks, despite the Greek Freak's 52 points, the Sixers solidify their #3 seed in the East with only 12 games left to play in the regular season.

- Bryce Harper played against the Yankees on Sunday. He is still hitless for the spring, but I'm not worried. He started late and now has a minor setback with the ankle. I would be more worried about the starting pitching.

I wonder how much longer Vince Valasquez will keep his spot in the rotation. Both Drew Anderson and Jarod Eichoff have pitched better this spring. I can see Valasquz in the bullpen, either as a long reliever or a Swiss Army Knife guy, coming in wherever needed to get a key strikeout.

Opening Day is only 10 days away. Hard to believe its the last full week of spring training.

- The Flyers, on thin ice to make the playoffs, pulled out a miracle win in Pittsburgh yesterday, scoring to tie the game with 17 seconds left, then winning in overtime. They are now 6 points in back of a playoff spot.

In 1 13-year period from 1974 through 1986, the three-time MVP led the Senior Circuit in home runs eight times and in slugging percentage five times. Schmidt's Peak came in 1980, when he belted 48 homers. Not only did he lead in home runs and slugging that season, but in the world Series he hit two homers, drove in seven, and batted .381 to carry Philadelphia to a six-game win over Kansas City.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, SIXERS, FLYERS

- Looks like the Phillies dodged a bullet with Bryce Harper. All x-rays are negative on Harper's sore ankle. He will probably miss a few days. His status is day-to-day. With only
less than two weeks until Opening Day Harper will need his at-bats. In the scheme of things, the Phils got lucky.

Jake Arrieta had another shaky outing. He and Vince Valasquez seem to be the weak links in the starting rotation during spring training. I still don't think the team will do anything with the rotation until the trade deadline in July. Arrieta is experienced another to pitch his way out of a funk, while Valasquez can always be moved to the bullpen if needed.

- The Eagles resigned corner back Ronald Darby. Good move by the Birds as Darby, who tore an ACL last season, is only 25 and a good back when healthy. He signed a one-year deal as he will be a free agent after the 2019 season. The Birds need to add depth overall and focus on running back, another corner or safety, and add to the offensive line in the draft. Seeking another linebacker to replace Jordan Hicks, who signed with Arizona.

- The Sixers finally beat the Sacremento Kings last night to again jump into the No.3 seed in the Eastern Conference. Big game on Sunday afternoon against the conference-leading Milwaukee Bucks. Could this be a preview of the conference championship?

- The Flyers blew a big game on Friday night. Up 5-2 in Toronto, the Orange and Black surrendered five straight goals and lost 7-6, They dropped to seven points behind for a playoff spot.

IN THE NEWS- BILL WOULD PROTECT SSI BENEFITS FOR COUPLES WHO MARRY

This is from The Citizen/TNS..

U.S. Rep. John Katko, R-N.Y., unveiled a proposal this month he says will eliminate barriers to marriage for people with disabilities.

Katko sponsored a bill that would protect Supplemental Security Income benefits for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.  Currently, when two people who rely on SSI marry, their benefits can be at risk because they must jointly report their income.

SSI is provided to people with disabilities who lack income. The assistance helps cover basic expenses, such as clothing, food and housing.

An issue paper published by the Social Security Administration in 203 details how SSI benefits are affected by marriage. If two people who receive SSI benefits marry, they would receive 25 percent less than they would if they lived together but didn't marry.

"People with intellectual and developmental disabilities should not have to choose between marriage and their disability benefits," Katko said.

Katko's bill, which is co-sponsored by Rep. Bill Keating, D-Mass.,  would ensure SSI benefits aren't affected by marital status. To calculate SSI benefits for an individual with developmental or intellectual disabilities,  only their income and other financial information will be reviewed. Their spouse's earnings won't be a factor.

The bill also provides access to Medicaid for those with developmental or intellectual disabilities if they qualify for SSI benefits.

Kandi Pickard, senior vice president of the National Down Syndrome Society, urged other members of congress to support the bill introduced by Katko and Keating.

"Marriage is a basic civil right," Pickard said. "Individuals with disabilities deserve the freedom to secure the legal protections of marriage to build loving families and pursue the opportunities that come with the institution of marriage."

The NCAA tournament began seeding teams in 1979. In 1985, the first year of the expanded 64-team field, a top seed was shown an early exit when David Robinson carried #13 seed Navy over #4 seed LSU, 78-55, to begin the playoff.

The following year two #14 seeds bracketed squads upset #3 seeds in the tourney's opening round: Cleveland State and Arkansas-Little Rock ousted big-timers Indiana and Notre Dame respectively.

At the onset of the 1991 tournament, the Richmond Spiders became the first team with a #15 seed to take down a #2 seed when they stunned Syracuse, 73-69.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, SIXERS

- NFL free agency started on Monday, and, as expected, the Eagles were active. Most notably, they resigned wide receiver DeSean Jackson to a three-year contract.

Even though D-Jax has been a problem off the field in the past I like the move. The Birds needed a wide out who is fast and can stretch the field. Jackson will keep opposing defenses honest with his blazing speed. Defenses won't be able to play eight men in the box He gives the Eagles numerous weapons now, with Jeffery, Agholor and Ertz. Carson Wentz has lacked a home run hitter, someone who can score from anywhere on the field. Torrey Smith was that guy in 2017, Mike Wallace was supposed to be that guy last year until he got hurt.

Linebacker Jordan Hicks reportedly will sign a four-year deal with Arizona. Hicks is a good player but is often-injured. I can't blame the Eagles for not wanting to pay big money for Hicks. But now depth at linebacker is an issue.

Jason Peters resigned for another year. I guess GM Howie Rossman and Coach Doug Pederson must feel that one of their young offensive linemen aren't yet ready to take over for Peters at left tackle. Even at 37 Peters can still play but he must stay healthy.

Antonio Brown went to Oakland. Le'Vione Bell will end up with the jets. But the biggest surprise was the Giants trading wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland for a first round pick, a third rounder, and an established corner back from the browns.

So, the Giants allow Landon Collins to walk to Washington, they trade 23-year-old Beckham Jr, yet they keep 38-year old Eli Manning?

Good news for Philly. They won't have to game-plan for Beckham Jr. two times a season. He is out of their division, even out of the National Conference. What is New York thinking? I guess they had enough of his immature antics yet they trade away a  young superstar?

Meanwhile, receiver  Cole Beasley leaves Dallas for Buffalo. The Cowboys remain strangely quiet and inactive on the free agent front.

The Eagles still need to address their running back situation, either via the upcoming draft, free agency or both. Signing an experienced backup quarterback, like a Ryan Fitzpatrick, wouldn't be a bad idea either, especially with Wentz' past history of getting hurt.

The next few days and weeks should be interesting.

- The Sixers barely escaped losing to the dreadful Cleveland Cavaliers in South Philly last night, with guard Jimmy butler taking the night off. Too many turnover again was the Sixer story, as the team committed an unacceptable 21 turnovers. Will this team kick it into a higher gear by playoff time, or are they what they are?

IN THE NEWS- TRUMP PROPOSES CUTS TO MEDICAID, OTHER DISABILITY PROGRAMS

From Disability Scoop..

With his latest budget proposal, the president  is calling for significant changes to Medicaid that advocates say would have big consequences for people with disabilities.

President Donald Trump released a $4.75 trillion plan this week to fund the federal government for the next fiscal year. The proposal features broad cuts to domestic spending, an increase in funding for defense and money for a wall along the border with Mexico.

Within the budget request is a plan to "give states additional flexibility over their medicaid programs" through per capita cap or block grant systems.

Essentially, rather than send matching grants to states to cover whatever services are provided to beneficiaries no matter the cost. Trump's plan would see the federal government provide a fixed amount of money to states each year for Medicaid services.

The approach has been pushed by Republicans several times in recent years as a way to rein in spending on the entitlement program. It is broadly opposed by disability advocates who say that limiting federal spending would squeeze states and jeopardize their ability to fund services that people with disabilities rely on/

In a statement this week, The Arc said Trump's budget request "would put the lives of people with disabilities at risk."

"The proposal includes deep cuts to Medicaid, the core program providing access to health care and home and community-based services for people with disabilities," the group said.

Aside from Medicaid, the budget request calls for cuts to numerous programs including state councils on disabilities, independent living programs and respite care efforts while slashing funds altogether for Special Olympics' education programs and doing away with a $51 million initiative to address autism and other developmental disorders.

One area spared from cuts is special education, with Trump proposing level funding for grants under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act at $13.2 billion.

"Tough decisions were made, but we made sure that this budget protects our most vulnerable students by requesting level funding for Title I and IDEA," said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

Advocates have warned over the years, however, that maintaining the same amount of funding year after year does not yield the same level of services since it does not account for inflation.

The budget request serves as a blueprint of the president's priorities, but it's up to Congress to decide how to allocate federal dollars.

"The good news is that Congress will write the annual appropriations bills and it has been supportive of most annual funding programs that support people with autism," said Kim Musheno, vice president of public policy at the Autism Society of America.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, FLYERS, PHILLIES

- Free agency has officially begun in the NFL and, like usual, the Eagles dove right in with big news.

To me, the biggest was the reports that former Eagle wide receiver DeSean Jackson would be returning to Philly from Tampa Bay. D-Jax wore out his welcome with the Buccaneers and wanted to return to the Eagles. Sounds like he got his wish.

The Birds need speed in their receiving corps to spread the field and open up spaces for guys like Alshon Jeffery, Zach Ertz and Nelson Agholor. Jackson still has the elite speed to keep defenses honest so they don't put eight men in the box against the Eagles.

Carson Wentz should have fun throwing bombs to Jackson, although Nick Foles was probably the better long-ball tosser. It's nice to know the Eagles have that home run threat back, someone able to score from anywhere on the field.

Will D-Jax return punts too? Philadelphia  needs improvement in its' special teams return game. Darren Sproles gave the team that home run hitter weapon after Jackson was cut by Chip Kelly and ended up in Washington. But since then, either on kickoffs or punt returns, the Birds have been weak.

Nice weapons now with Jackson, the pair of tight ends and Agholor.  They still need a speedy running back, but it's a start.

I was a little surprised GM Howie Rossman brought back often-injured Jason Peters. He is one of Owner Jeffery Lurie's favorite players. Still, Peters could hardly stay on the gridiron last season.  Eagles' management must feel their young offensive linemen just aren't ready to start yet.

Always confused about how they treated Stefan Wisnewski. They cut him yesterday.Football experts claim he played well for the time he was on the line for Philly.

More action to come as the week progresses on.

As expected, QB Nick Foles signed a nice deal with Jacksonville. Foles gets his chance to play and lead a team. Nate Sudfeld is now Wentz' backup. I would expect Rossman may draft a young quarterback late in the draft.

- I gave up on the Flyers too soon. With their 3-2 comeback win over Ottawa last night the Orange and Black move to within three points of a playoff spot. Hopefully they still have something left to get them over the playoff hump.

- Bryce Harper played right field on Monday afternoon in Clearwater. Harper walked and struck out in his two plate appearances.

I'm not worried about Aaron Nola getting hit around on Sunday against the Orioles but I am worried about another poor outing by inconsistent Vince Valasquez. He is getting pounded in Florida already. Up north for the past few seasons, Valasquez is a real roller coaster, from one good outing to not able to go past five innings.  It's time for him to step up or else go to the bullpen ( where he probably belongs, anyway). Drew Amderson, who has pitched well in Clearwater this spring, is right there waiting to take a rotation spot if Valasquez continues to falter.

The Phils are off today but play Wednesday night in Tampa against the Yankees. Harper will play. Their annual St. Patrick's Day game is on Sunday vs the Yanks in Clearwater. The Phillies will be wearing green.

REVIEW- JOHN & YOKO DOCUMENTARY

I'm a huge Beatles fan so when I heard that A&E was showing a documentary on Monday night called "John & Yoko: Above Us Only Sky" I was excited.  I know the film was going to focus on the period when John recorded the "Imagine" album, early 1972. Turns out I was a little disappointed.

It was like watching two hours of home movies ( and who really wants to watch anyones' home movies for that long?). Some of it was interesting, especially the segments in the recording studio. It has always fascinated me how an artist like John Lennon creates his songs. Watching John work out the lyrics, melodies and arrangements for "Imagine" and the other songs on the album were pretty cool. He truly was a creative genius.

Also interesting was reliving the clothing, hairstyles and overall vibe of those days. Everyone seemed to have long hair and facial hair. Clothes were baggy and wild. Everyone was smoking, either cigarettes or weed.  Of course these were musicians so I didn't expect anything less.

Viewing John's personal recording studio and the inside of his mansion outside of London was fun. It was like the documentary lifted the viewer out of their living room and plopped them right smack in the 70s.  I've heard of Phil Spector, but actually seeing him and hearing him speak was eye-opening ( he was a strange guy on many levels).

Along with the studio pieces they mixed on in some background footage. not much of the Beatles. More so on Yoko Ono. And that's what I probably disliked about the project to begin with- too much Yoko.

I'm not a big Yoko fan, so maybe I'm biased a little. They surviving band members or photographs or whomever else attended those sessions pretty much praised Yoko to extremes, going out of their way to suggest she was the real creative force behind the music and the inspiration for one of the greatest songs ever written of that era- "Imagine" ( Yoko has since claimed to be a co-writer of the song, which will make her even wealthier than he estimated $800 million.

True, John did admit that the words for "Imagine" were already in Yoko's book called " Grapefruit." But it took John to think of the concept and make it into a song. Plus, it seemed like John deferred automatically to Yoko on most subjects, so he would give her credit, right or wrong.

Maybe the really old survivors ( it was kind of shocking in a way to see all of these guys so young and now so ancient) wanted to stay in Yoko's good graces, as she had to be watching the documentary. She is 86-years-old now, living in New York City.

More fun was seeing Yoko now, in limited clips. She is still trying to stay chic and stylish, despite her age. Seeing Julian Lennon was a treat too.

I never could get Yoko's contribution to John's work, from her paintings and weird art pieces to her screaming rants on record or on concert stages. To me she was just weird.

It was like no one had the guts to speak the truth, either then or now, that Yoko really did help to break up the Beatles, for one thing. John loved her for some reason, and that's fine, but don't deny the truth. Yoko was a money-grabber who leeched onto John for her own purposes. She may have loved John, but Yoko knew what she was doing and was ( and still is) a smart businesswoman.

Only one person interviewed back then called her "Grapefruit" book "rubbish.' Everyone else described it- and her- as "different" or other words meaning "garbage" without coming out and saying it.

Anyway, I'm not looking forward to the upcoming film about John & Yoko's relationship, which is to be produced and directed by Peter Jackson. Yoko is involved, so how honest can it be?

What I did like about the documentary was the overall feel of the era- memories of the Vietnam War, the protests in the streets, the overall simple yet complex of times which I lived through but had forgotten.

I like John and his music, but I like The Beatles better. Still, I thought parts of this film were noteworthy, and despite the overall "pro-Yoko" theme, it was worthwhile sitting thru. Would I watch it again? Probably not, as it didn't shed any new little on his music or their relationship.

Like I originally stated, it was almost like watching two hours of home movies. Only the subject of the movies ( and it's a good thing they still exist) is one of the most famous people in the world at that time- John Lennon.

If you're not a Beatles or Lennon fan, you are probably not going to care. I give it ** out of four for the historical footage and glimpses into the inter sanctum of the recording studio and the process with the musicians.
