THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- APRIL 15

Patriot's Day Tradition

In 1897, New Yorker John McDermott wins the first running of the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon with a time of 2 hours and 55 minutes 10 seconds.

The nation's first event of its kind began as a local Patriot's Day event and has been run annually every year but 1918.

On the day of the marathon the Boston Red Sox play a home game at Fenway Park starting at 11:05 a.m. When the game ends, the crowd empties the bleachers and stream onto Kenmore Square to cheer home runners that are nearing the 25-mile mark.

Forty years ago, Joan Benoit entered her first Boston Marathon, set an American women's record with a time of 2:35:15. and won the traditional Patriot's Day race in Boston, Massachusetts.
