MY LIFE WITH BRITTLE BONES

Back in 2003 I wrote a book called Those Are The Breaks. It was about my life with Osteogenisus Imperfecti- brittle bones, a very rare condition. It was also about my life up til then, the ups and downs of love, school, family, work, you name it. I hoped it would be inspiring to others and say to everyone that a disability didn't matter as long you try.

I've thought about updating the book and refining it. I think every writer wishes they could do stuff differently. Luckily, I have the blog as a forum, so I plan to reprint the book with changes and variations. The first part should basically be the same as the original story, again, with a few changes. The second part will be new. Much has happened since 2003, especially with my health. Interesting how tongs come full cycle.

Since O.I. is so rare there aren't many accounts of what happens to someone with O.I. when they age and get older. Frankly, most survivors of O.I. to my degree are gone by now. So, just as I recounted what it was like to cope with the condition as a kid and beyond, I think it's important to share with those interested what it's like now to have O.I., now that I'm 62.

So please follow my story and let me know what you think. This time I hope to focus more on the fascinating aspects of the condition and how it may relate to others with O.I, or anyone living with a disability or certain challenge in life. We all may have different challenges in life but we all have something in common and can learn from each other how to deal with those challenges.

I realize this is going to be a lot of work, like writing the book all over again, but I have the time, and I think it's important to leave a true legacy, especially for others  with brittle bones, to let them know what to expect in time and also encourage them to keep trying.

So even if you are one of the few who read Those Are The Breaks way back when, please check out the new edition. I hope you find it fun, enjoyable, thought-provoking and interesting. I hope it touches you and inspires you to never give up, no matter what your circumstances may be in life.

Look for new entries in the blog, titled My Life With Brittle Bones.
