- The Phillies are now 5-1 after their 10-4 win on a cold, rainy Friday night in South Philly. It was a disgrace to play in such conditions. At any moment I fared they would stop the game and put the tarp on the field. but they didn't. They played thru the showers and the crisp mist. I guess they didn't want to play a doubleheader today.
The offense again showed up. There is no soft spot in the lineup. Even on an off night by Bryce Harper the team scored 10 runs.
I look for Cesar Hernandez to get a day off. Mentally he didn't seem there last night. Scott Kingery needs some time at second base. Aaron Altherr, who may be released if/when outfielder Roman Quinn returns, clubbed a pinch-hit double down the left field line to tack on a run late. I would hate to see Altherr go. He is an excellent defensive outfielder, can run like a gazelle, and has power.
Too bad Scott Kingery, who is over-matched at the big league level so far, can't be sent down to triple A. He adds speed to his role as super utility man off the bench. The team needs Kingery plus they would look foolish to send him down to the farm after giving Kingery so much money last spring. By rights, Kinegry should be the one demoted, not Altherr.
It's still early but I thought Nick Pivetta would've looked better by now. He has so much potential, according to scouts and his coaches, but he continues to struggle, despite picking up the win last night. I worry about the starting pitchers. Is till think Aaron Nola is hurt. Vince Valasquez starts for the first time this Monday vs Washington. Zach Eflin pitched brilliantly in his first start. Let's see if he can follow-up on the great performance he showed Tuesday night vs the Nationals when he out-dueled Max Scherzer.
The Phils play the Twins again this afternoon at 2:05, then the series finale is Sunday afternoon. I'll be there on Sunday, watching Eflin go for two in a row.
- The Sixers play Chicago tonight and need to win at least two of their last three games to solidify their No. 3 seed in the playoffs. After losing three games in a row the team needs to go into the post-season on a high note. Right now they are limping into the playoffs, playing no defense. Not a good start to a championship run.
- The Flyers; season ends today with a meaningless game against the hurricanes. They quit. The squad needs an overhaul, both in coaching and personnel. If only Ed Snider were alive, he would clean house. He didn't have time for this mediocre bull. He wanted to win.
