IDOL CHATTER-AMERICAN IDOL- LIVE SHOWS

- The Top 14 sang for their lives last night as the live shows began on American Idol. A fast-paced two hours of performances. Most sang well, so it would be easier to single out the bad performances, as four contestants must be eliminated tonight and move eon to the Top 10. Here are my impressions:

- Eddie Island is a total joke. He embarrassed himself by trying to dress outrageously like early Elton John, while croaking "Bennie and the Jets." He couldn't sing before when he somehow made it this far. Last night was a train wreak, both visually and musically.  If the judges save him tonight ( America voes for seven, and the three judges each have a vote) it will be a disgrace. He can't sing and this year's competition is too strong to have a buffoon make it and a legitimate singer get left out.

I liked Ashley Hess from the start but I worry about her tonight. She did OK with her piano ballad last night but it wasn't spectacular like some of the performances. Still, she's a good singer and is pretty, so maybe America will vote for her.

Demitrius may go. He has kind of skated through all year and his performance on Sunday night was good but not outstanding. The judges liked Alyssa Raghu but her song was boring, in my opinion, Evenlyn is a beautiful girl and she gave us a frisky number, one which her sultry, low voice really wasn't suited for, but she turned in a sexy, upbeat job.

The clear highlights were Jeremiah, who looks like the favorite to win it all; Uche, who will have some sort of career after Idol, no matter what; and the Texas teen Riley, who is gorgeous and can sing and is a future Country star.

Alejandro will make it, even if his performance wasn't as good as the past. Wade will make it even though he doesn't "look" the Idol type and I hate his gravelly voice. Madison will make it because she belted out another strong showing. Walker went old-fashioned with his Broadway show choice of "Climb Every Mountain." Laine is too slick for me with his fake, greasy Elvis wannabe shtick, but he will survive another week.

So,who goes? Certainly Eddie. Evelyn may go just because of song choice and her voice didn't quite jive with that particular song. Demetrius because he really hasn't defined himself in the competition yet. And in an upset I say Walker goes.

Too bad Idol gets so rushed near the end. I wish it was like the old days when only one person was eliminated each week, not in bunches. Because they are so good, it makes weeding out the bad much more difficult. Someone good actually has to go. But that will make it more interesting.

Final note; these judges continue to be much too nice. For the money they are getting paid i expect them to be more honest and say when a performance sucked, like Simon used to do. instead, they are cheerleaders, even standing after or during most songs. I need a judge not a cheerleader in that position.
